This place is delicious!!! We the appetizer sampler w/ fried green tomatoes, fried mushrooms, fried onion rings, and homemade ranch. Then we split the world’s best chicken fried steak, w/ back-eyed peas, and fried okra it was excellent and so was the service!
No lie, world's best chicken fried steak, and a lot of it!
Great food and service! Sweet iced tea, chicken fried steak that was bigger than my head, and delicious mashed potatoes. The apple cobbler was also very good, just really sweet.
I had the small chicken fried steak, green beans, mashed potatoes and it was all so good! The chicken fried steak was large, green beans fresh with ham and bacon, and real mashed potatoes. Since my dog was with me, I ordered a hamburger patty for her and it was good and flavorful. (I tested it, 😆). Will have to return for a hamburger. The staff was friendly and accommodating. Don't pass it up!
We eat at this place frequently, mostly for breakfast. We have come to know the staff and love them like family! It's like coming home when we eat here! I'll try to remember to take pics next time.
Chicken Fried Steak is a solid choice. We ordered the small and it was more than plenty. Prices are reasonable and there are lots on menu choices. They serve breakfast all day but check hours because some days they close before dinner. Service was very good
AMAZING IM TELLING YOU SPLENDID the service was impeccable and the food oh my lord I’ve never had something so good in my entire existence. The first serving the okra was a bit slimy so I told my waiter, 5 minutes later the chef came out with a fresh perfectly cooked, seasoned okra 5 stars best in my life heavily recommended
Cfs, was tender and gravy was plentiful and good. Black eye peas were really tasty, great flavor. Waitress was quick, pleasant, always return to check on us. Loved the atmosphere, count look, bar on other side and lots of seating g. Easy to get to. First time and the other 2 drivers thought the same. We cross the country delivery cars and trucks and we eat everywhere and everything. This food was really enjoyable, we will be back Brent
Food is great. Have been stopping by here for years on our way through Johnson City, every once in a while we make the trip from Elgin just to eat here. Husband says it's THE BEST Chicken Fried Steak he's ever had. Service is always great. The Buttermilk pie is top notch, definitely reccomend!
This place gave me “Ole Fashion Diner” vibes. It was a nice nostalgic atmosphere. The staff is very nice and welcoming. The location is perfect, you can’t miss it. Has wonderful merchandise, decor, and beautiful dessert. We ordered the Quick Breakfast and the Omelet with Pancakes. We completely devoured the food. A food coma was in our near future. If you’re looking for a place to have a Classic Hill Country Breakfast, then make your way to Hill Country Cupboard. You will not be disappointed.
Much older place, but they have a good selection of food. All day breakfast, good prices, and good taste. We are here Christmas Eve on the way home, and very few places are open, but this place was a good stop. Initially service was good, and food came out quickly... But we had to wait for a while to get the check. All in all, if we are in the area again, I would stop here again to try other things.
Down home country cooking like Grandma used to make! We enjoyed our brunch and some true southern hospitality from our server! It did take a bit to get our meal - but on this day - we weee in the slow mode and ready to just enjoy our time there! Highly recommend the lavender lemonade! My daughter loved the fancy chocolate milk too!
Don't let the exterior fool you we almost didn't walk in. Since I love to try new places I'm glad we did. We were greeted and sat at a table quickly. The young man who waited on us was super polite and helpful. Now I only post my experiences and I can honestly say the food was delicious! My Rooster sandwich was so good I saved the 2nd half to eat at home. My husband loved the country fried steak plate. Tea could be better but at least it was a perfect half and half combo. Thank you for a delicious late lunch!
Stopped here this morning for breakfast. Very nicely decorated establishment. Service was great! Had two young gentlemen take care of 5 of us and they did a great job! My hubby and I had the same entree: pick three. Eggs were cooked well. Biscuits were warm and moist and the honey was really good. The country fried potatoes were excellent! Definitely recommend!
We stopped for lunch and it was a lovely treat! April was our server and she was a delight! We ordered the blackberry cobbler a la mode for our appetizer and it did not disappoint! We ordered water and one half & half tea and one peach tea and drinks were flavorful! We ordered the chicken fried steak sandwich and meal. The sandwich came with one side and we country fried potatoes (lunch potatoes ) and the meal came with two sides so we ordered mashed potatoes and fried okra. The sandwich came with fresh lettuce, pickles and onion. The Texas toast was amazing so I asked for an extra side of their creamy gravy!
Visited on a Thursday evening with two friends. The restaurant was not busy. We were promptly seated. Our drink orders were taken at seating. My Coke came in a room temperature can, so when it was poured, it became watered down and flat. Had it been cold, this could have been avoided. We ordered the fried mushrooms as an appetizer. They were huge, and a highlight of the meal. The generous portion could easily make a meal for those with a smaller appetite. Next visit I will try the sampler appetizer with the fried green tomatoes. My friends shared a chicken fried steak, a garden salad, and the fried okra. The steak was generous and was well prepared. The sides were nicely prepared. I ordered the fried pork chop, which includes two chops. They were tender and juicy. I ordered the black eyed peas. They were good, but the serving was more of the juice than peas, and they had a hint of a (vinegary?) tang which tasted a bit "off". My country fried potatoes were great, with crispy edges and creamy centers. Could have used a bit more onion, but that is a personal preference. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was homey. Will visit again and plan to sample dessert and a bar offering. Overall, a very pleasant experience.
We stopped in about 30 minutes before the lunch rush. Stood in the doorway for a couple of minutes waiting to be seated, which was fine, but no one was manning a host stand even though there were two or three wait staff on the floor. Once we sat down, drinks came out in about five minutes, and we were ready to order. I asked our waiter if the chicken fried steak was really as good as advertised, and he said, “I don’t like chicken fried steak, so I’m not the person to ask.” We had a good laugh and both ordered it anyway. When the food came out, it looked good, but that’s where it peaked. The chicken fried steak had zero seasoning. The crust was nice, but we had to douse it in salt just to give it any flavor. And the gravy? I know Ken’s gravy when I see it. I didn’t ask, but based on the Google reviews, I expected everything to be homemade. That gravy was not homemade. I don’t know who’s been calling this the world’s best chicken fried steak, but I feel sorry for them if they think that’s as good as it gets. The black-eyed peas had an odd taste I couldn’t place. The country potatoes, though, were genuinely great. Flavorful, well-seasoned, could’ve been cooked a touch longer to crisp up, but easily the best thing on the plate. Overall, I’d give it a 3 out of 5. I travel a lot and this is the first time I’ve left a negative review anywhere. But if you’re going to claim you have the world’s best chicken fried steak, you better at least come close.
My wife and I went there for an anniversary breakfast and we've passed this place a thousand times , even seen it on TV food show. I am sorry to say we left very disappointed, food came out cold I had the so called award winning chicken fried steak and my wife had biscuits and gravy. The food cooled down so much the gravy already started to get that skin on it. We also only had 1 cup of coffee never got a refill. Place gets busy but still you have to take care of the customer. We were so hungry we ate as much as we can stand looked at each other with disappointed looks on our faces and left. We did pay which was stupid on our behalf but wasn't going let that ruin our weekend. Maybe 1 day we will go back and give it another try.
