Absolutely loved our visit to Affare! The food is amazing. Such creativity and thought were put into each bite. We tried their Tasting menu tonight and enjoyed every course. The atmosphere is intimate yet casual enough that you don't feel stuffy. The staff was warm and inviting from the moment we walked in the door. They have a great selection of wine and cocktails. The Bison Ribeye with the celery root and blueberry gastrique was a total hit. Cooked to perfection and very flavorful. We can't wait to come back and try something else.
This restaurant was an incredible experience. My wife and I enjoyed spending our ninth wedding anniversary here and could not have ask for a better dining experience. The wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was edible art that never left us wanting more. We also got to meet one of the owner and she was very enjoyable to talk with as well. We learned her husband and two of her four children work in the kitchen making this restaurant a true family affair. 10 out of 10 will recommend to all our friends and family!
This German restaurant hit all the good points! The setting is a little atypical but very comfortable, not noisy, and not crowded. The service was excellent and dishes in the tasting menu were properly spaced. The food was excellent! We will go again.
Best German restaurant in all Kansas and Missouri!!!! The quality of the food and the flavors will blow your mind. The steak was our favorite but everything was fantastic and the wine was just the perfect pair!!! Definitely not our last time, we will bring more friends because this place is worth to be share with others. Is a must when you come to Kansas and specifically to downtown!!!! Thank you
I walked in without a reservation on a Saturday afternoon, and they were able to accommodate me. And I'm so glad that they did! The ambiance in the place is great, low lighting, decor looks good, and just a nice feel overall. For my entrée I had the Jager Schnitzel, and the portion itself was very good size. The Spätzle was fresh and went well with the mushroom sauce...that mushroom sauce was truly amazing and the star of the dish! For the schnitzel itself, it was big and tender. In my opinion it could have use just a bit more salt to take it to a whole new level, but amazing dish nonetheless. For dessert I had the Pavlova. What's not to like about meringue? it was good, crunchy outside and soft on the inside. The sorbet and the fresh berries, as well as the berry sauce helped to balance the sweetness in the meringue really well. Now the chocolate, I might be a little bias because I don't care about chocolate too much but I thought it was overpowering and a little too sweet at times. That is just my personal opinion that doesn't take away from a well done dish. Overall, 10/10 experience. Fast, friendly and professional service paired with a great menu and beautiful execution of it. I would absolutely recommend this place for any occasion, but specially to make a special occasion memorable.
Service, menu and ambiance - all 5 stars. I had wanted to eat here for a while now and wish I had gone sooner. Everything was great. Had the Lobster Poutine (because why would you not?), the risotto (scallops, shrimp & OCTOPUS BACON!) and then the venison steak. Absolutely everything was cooked perfectly (the fries in the poutine were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft inside, the risotto was velvety and the steak was not over done). All of this culminated with the best apple strudel dessert I have ever put in my face. I cried. The space is really well done and open with your usual “Crossroads-industrial” vibe going on. Service is great with everyone being helpful and absolutely no rush to get you out of there. I enjoy that kind of thing and have no issues with taking dinner one course at a time. I want to have many more courses here and apologize to the folks at Affäre for not visiting sooner!
Don't tell my wife but I'm going to have an affair with Affäre. It was absolutely amazing. I had the venison steak and she had the wild boar. They were flawless, honestly one of the best meals I've ever had. Dessert was fantastic we had the cheese cake and the black forest cake. I'm definitely coming back here, I don't care how much it cost, shut up and take my money.
The restaurant is quaint with an edge. Service was stellar from the moment we walked and the food exceeded expectations. I'm gluten free due to allergy and there's plenty of choices. The menu is filled with interesting and delicious options. The cocktails were amazing as well. #Affare is worth checking out.
I would give this restaurant 100 stars. The food is excellent. The Jager Schnitzel was crispy and the meat was tender. The duck breast was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend the morels and white asparagus. On top of truly wonderful cuisine, the service was outstanding.
10 star meal and one of the best I've ever had in my life. I got the tasting menu and put myself in the chef's hands. 1000% recommended. Katie (sorry if I'm wrong) made me feel like I was the only person she was concerned with, even while being very busy otherwise. Great service, phenomenal food and an extensive drink menu I didn't explore. Their inside seating was beautiful, they had a space for bigger parties and the nicest looking patio. Come and let them spoil you.
A nice, updated take on the typical schnitzel and sausage fare you typically find in German restaurants. The brat trio was delicately flavored and nicely sauced. Preferable to the seafood risotto dish, which was competently executed, but nothing beyond what you’d find in another good local restaurant. The Painted Table dessert was remarkable in sweet flavors and in flame-illuminated presentation. Truly unique.
We love this place every time we go. The tasting menu is such a fun way to eat seasonal flavors and always has a great wine pairing to go with. But in truth: we get the Lobster Poutine nearly EVERY visit. It's just too good! Tonight, we got the tasting menu but with a "side" brat platter (3 flavors of housemate bratwurst + white and purple sauerkraut) 🤤🤤 In the summer, no place in KC beats their oasis courtyard patio. ❤️ We love this spot!
My wife and I haven't eaten here in several years. I have to say I kind of forgot about the place. It's going to definitely be back on our regular rotation. The food was excellent, great ambiance with plenty of space and our server was awesome. I had the bacon-wrapped trout and it was one of the best things I've had this year. Our server really knew the menu and gave us great recommendations.
Amazing food! This was my first time trying white asparagus and it was amazing! The black forest cake is a must try! Seared foie gras and duck breast were amazing as well!
Located in the heart of the crossroads district in downtown Kansas City this German restaurant offers fantastic cocktails, a great atmosphere, and top notch service. We tried 4 cocktails and they were all excellent.
This is a quaint, upscale street-side restaurant at the Crossroads in downtown KC. It serves German faire mostly, with some other popular items like the Nebraska Wagyu steak, New Zealand Venison, and a healthy seafood menu. Its not a lot to look at from the outside and is entirely an interior restaurant, but it is well made. Atmosphere: I love the seating options with tables, benches, and couches all available. They take privacy and the ability to hear one another seriously. The tables are not close together and there's a very soothing and conversational ambiance. It does have that rustic downtown setting but with a sleek and professional interior design. Service: The staff did wonderful. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and pitched the product well He took the time to explain the dishes, named in German, and gave us good insight. Great service at the bar as well. Food: the appetizers were great and off the chartuterie board I had the best blue cheese I've ever tasted. A very extensive wine and beer list for those wanting to partake. They are known for their fantastic German reislings. As for the main dish, I was a bit disappointed. The venison steak was good and enjoyable, but not outstanding enough to make the whole dish spectacular. To that end, the sides did the restaurant an injustice. Presented very well, but there wasn't much too special about the "bread pudding", the sauced half-pear, or the broccoli. At that, those dishes range in the 30s and 40s. The Venison steak dish was 44. The Wagyu steak was 75. If we had stopped there, it might drag it down to a 4 star review, but the desserts were amazing. Very well done and delicious. All around a positive experience and barely makes a 5 star in my book based on the whole everything together, but not a full 5 stars in the space it was competing with. I really like the things they did well though, and would be open to giving it another shot.
We were here for my partner's birthday. His response to the meal was the best, "While I enjoy good food, I've never had something take my breath away and make me close my eyes to completely immerse in the experience". Well done, and thanks to the team at Affäre.
We went here for a dinner date during KC restaurant week and did not disappoint. First off the service was top notch. Everyone who greeted us and attended us were so polite and felt as if we knew them already. I highly recommend the Pekin Duck breast and Orange Cardamom cake for dessert. Also, my other favorite was the Pear Celery Root Soup, so perfectly salty and sweet. We did not do the wine pairing because my husband likes his beers and I wanted to try the Gluhwein, which is a warm spiced mulled wine traditional during holiday season. I highly recommend it in a cold day like when we went. We also got some blood suasages to go so we can have for breakfast the next morning. Overall, A++++. Great place, and amazing atmosphere. They gained lifelong customers!
Try their charcuterie! It will not disappoint! This time we had the wagyu beef, jaeger schnitzel, braised beef, duck and venison...10/10! To our server.. didn't catch your name but you're tops, young man! My daughter-in-law was nursing and they provided her with a quiet place just for that. We absolutely love this place! Still our top pick for KC fine dining! Older review: Made online reservations. Next day called to see what tables were available and a sweet young lady sent me photos and let me choose my table for the evening. Arrived and it was a very nice place with a warm atmosphere. Server was very nice. I had been a little under the weather and very thirsty and he stood there filling up my glass while I waited on my husband to run back to the vehicle for something her forgot. The water was very nice, lol not just because I was feeling dehydrated but it taste like soft, filtered water, which I love! We were served fresh made pretzels with their house relish, house made pickles and, the house made pickled butternut squash, which I'm a HUGE fan of! The menu was great! It was one page of, what seemed, very well picked main dishes like house made brats, Snitzels, venison, rabbit, duck and halibut (I know there was more). It's just that you don't see many places offering venison, duck & rabbit! I chose the rabbit and my husband ordered the Jaeger Snitzel. It was beautiful, the smell was wonderful, the Jaeger Snitzel....A PROPERLY MADE JAEGER SNITZEL!!! (WARNING: Don't make the mistake of getting a properly made Jaeger snitzel from Affäre then going to Grunauers and expect anything close! You've been warned!) My rabbit was prepared three different ways with fried squash blossoms and a butternut squash puree. It was beautiful! We had never eaten at Affäres before and I'm not sure if another German restaurant could ever meet our expectations now! Lol! Going to make it hard! I'm looking forward to going back and trying the venison, halibut or maybe that Jaeger snitzel my husband ordered! Not sure but I'm certain it will be cooked perfectly! If you want authentic German cuisine have it cooked by a German Chef! Oh! Their pastry chef makes desserts that tops the meal off perfectly! And yes! 5 stars only because I couldn't give them more! At the end of our very fine meal all we could do was reflect on how magnificent the whole experience was! MY HUSBAND AND I RANKING AFFÄRE #1 GERMAN CUISINE IN KCMO!
Had dinner at Affäre this past weekend and ... WOW! Everything was amazing. We started at their new Wine Bar for a wine flight (Katrin the owner was so sweet and talked to us about each tasting) and some cocktails then moved onto dinner. Our server was attentive and informative and especially reassuring to one "not so adventurous diner in our group". We had the Sea Platter to start and one person loved it so much, they ordered it again for their dinner. It was by far the best scallops and octopus I've ever eaten and I've had them sea-side in greece. My husband ordered the Jäger Schnitzel (and I couldn't stop taking bites off his plate). I had the herb-crusted venison which was perfectly cooked and had not a hint of gaminess. Everything was perfection and it was a breath of fresh air to try new things you don't see on every menu in town. We were completely stuffed but will certainly be back and leave room for the dessert table experience!
Treat that special someone to a unique European treat in the Midwest. Affare is a best kept secret in Downtown KC. First off, I recommend making a reservation because we watched them turn away several groups of people because they were fully booked at 5pm! This restaurant is for the eclectic palate who loves exploring delicacies. We started off with a delicious shrimp scampi that I sopped up with toast and a smoked salmon appetizer! Our waiter, Tony, was the best!! He made the best selections that catered to our taste buds. My quail dinner was perfectly crisp with a tender filling sitting on a bed of buttery kale. My partner had a medium rare KC Wagyu that was perfectly seared. I asked for a hot chocolate and even though they didn't have it on the menu, they whipped something up for me that was a chocolate ganache over cream. Tasty! We closed out our meal with warm Apple Streudel topped with ice cream and of course chocolate cake. The funny part of our meal was when my partner asked "are you going to say mmmm the whole time?" yes...everything was that good!
Food was phenomenal! The service impeccable I highly recommend this restaurant. We had the tuna tartare and smoked spinach salad to start. They were both so good. I can’t pick which one I liked better. For dinner I had the veal schnitzel with fries. It was to die for. I’m not a big seafood person, but my partner had the seafood risotto with shrimp, scallops, octopus and smoked farm egg. He absolutely loved it. I tried a bite of his risotto and it was so tasty.
Spectacular!! The food was incredible!! Highly recommend the rouladen!! The service was impeccable including wine pairing suggestions and a very home-like feeling!! The atmosphere was perfect including the background music and the black and white movies playing on TV.
This was my second time at Affare and it is really good German food. A little pricey, but great atmosphere, service and top notch food. Das Essen ist köstlich!
I was beyond pleasantly surprised with this fantastic restaurant! We had the lobster poutine fries, a smoked salad, shrimp and scallop risotto that had the most exquisite cheese, bacon wrapped trout, and the painted table for dessert! The flavors were amazing! The suggestions from our server were spot on. The dinner lasted a few hours and drink suggestions were perfect! I felt like I was regular there and it was my first time. It’s a warm and inviting space. I cannot give this restaurant enough stars! I wish I took more pictures, but I was too busy enjoying the experience!
What a delightful surprise this spot was! Sat at the bar for a solo dinner, had a pair of fantastic mocktails by the bartender Chase. The mushrooms soup and vegetarian entree were near perfectly seasoned, and I was impressed the cream sauce wasn’t too heavy or too sweet. The fact they had Humphrey Bogart’s The Maltese Falcon playing on the TVs was just a bonus. I regret not getting dessert!!
Affäre is one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Kansas City. I went several times for their chef’s tasting menu, which is offered most weekends (highly recommend joining their email list to stay in the loop). It’s a multi-course meal with option of adding thoughtful pairings of wine or beer (we always do both). Every dish I had, from swordfish to lamb to handmade pastas, was seasonal, creative, and beautifully executed. The atmosphere is relaxed yet refined, and the service was always excellent. Bonus tip: they also sell their sausages to take home and cook yourself, they’re amazing and absolutely worth picking up. Affäre is the kind of place that makes any evening feel like a special occasion.
Loved this place, food & service was excellent. Also loved their wine pairings. If you like German food, thos is the place for you. Shout-out to Abby in the kitchen!
Very classy atmosphere and delicious food. The cocktails were spot on. Pretzels, salad, garlic shrimp toast, risotto, venison, barramundi, and Apple strudel were all excellent!
Affäre is an exceptional dining experience! The twist on classic German cuisine is both innovative and delicious, with each dish offering fantastic flavors and excellent presentation. The vibe is laid-back, perfect for a relaxed meal. The service is attentive and friendly, making you feel right at home. The lovely back patio is a great spot to enjoy your meal. Highly recommend Affäre for a unique and delightful culinary experience!
Food was amazing. Wonderful portion on appetizers and the food choices were incredible and topnotch. The cocktails also didn't disappoint. A Great atmosphere, and although we made reservations for the Courtyard, we chose to sit at the Bar. What a great choice for us. It was our first time visiting and we definitely will be returning.
We made reservations for seven to celebrate family birthdays. When we got there, We realized we accidentally made the reservationr for two. The staff said no problem and did everything to accommodate and deliver a wonderful dining experience. From the service to the food to the painted table dessert everything was top notch!
Best birthday dinner in a long time, and best German food restaurant, hands down. Service was prompt, server regularly checked on us, felt well treated. Highly recommend!
Amazing food and service from start to finish. Our server Will was great! Educated us on several of the dishes and gave great recommendations
I ate here as part of a pre-arranged professional/private business dinner and had a great experience. Katrin, our main contact, was professional and very flexible with our last minute changes and constrictions. I love how they have a wide selection of NA beverages that aren’t just sugary sodas. The servers were also all very attentive. The atmosphere is beautiful within the restaurant and the food is delicious as well, particularly the apple strudel, grilled veggies, and the schnitzel. Pork was a little dry but everything else about the meal more than made up for it. It’s also very affordable for the quality.
The food was excellent. We ordered from that tasting menu, which changed each week, so we could try a variety of dishes. We also chose the beer pairing option. Ther server explained each dish when it was brought to our table. The restaurant has a nice romantic atmosphere.
Affäre offers a modern, upscale take on German-inspired cuisine with creative dishes, bold flavors, and beautiful presentation. The ambiance is stylish yet relaxed, and the staff is warm, attentive, and knowledgeable. Cocktails are inventive, ingredients feel fresh, and the overall experience blends sophistication with comfort, making it a standout spot for a memorable meal.
The food first off is amazing. They really spend time figuring out the right ingredients and combinations to make it a great tasting experience, not just a place to eat. The service is wonderful! They are attentive, explain the menu well and are quick to get you anything you may want. Bonus points for this business because it was my wife's birthday and I special ordered a cake on short notice. They made it for me and I was able to pick it up for her birthday. It was very special and I greatly appreciated it. If you haven't tried this restaurant, you're definitely missing out and you need to change that ASAP.
Affäre has an immaculate atmosphere and service. Our waiter, Tony, blew our expectations out of the water and made the experience worthwhile. Most of food was incredible, although I wouldn’t recommend the fish in tasting menu or the puy lentil salad. The venison, risotto, and lobster poutine were especially delicious and I would recommend to anyone. The Glühwein was also amazing. If you’re looking for a place with an intimate ambience, great food, and impeccable service, Affäre is the place.
I've been twice now. Food is pretty good but service has been slow both times, I feel having 1 more server for a full house would help, unsure if it's also a back of the house problem. Lovely date dark vibe though otherwise. Get the seafood platter and the venison. The duck was underwhelming to me.
The service was excellent and the staff was really awesome and attentive. We thought the tasting menu itself was pretty average for the price. Everything tasted fresh but kind of lackluster, especially the apps and dessert and the Black Forest cake didn’t really have the layer of cherries like it’s supposed to. Still happy to try the place out with my hubby for my birthday dinner. We spent around $150 and left very full and satisfied.
The place was amazing. Nothing overly goddy, the decoration, but still sets the mood for a German-style restaurant I would say the food would be traditional German fair done, fine dining with a tinge of American flavor. our server was friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines. The lobster poutine was a standout, though I’m sure it’s not German :)
The service here was excellent and our waitress was very knowledgeable. Came here for restaurant week and thoroughly enjoyed the food. My only complaint and reason I couldn't give 5 stars was that the swordfish on top of the risotto was cotton- dry. Everything else was cooked to perfection, but I had to envelope the swordfish in the risotto just to choke it down. In hindsight, I should have pushed it to the side and not eaten it...
A lovely little gem in KC, serving German food. I was particularly impressed with their smorgasbord of house-cured meats. Service was very good, eager to please. Even though the pastry chef was not available to paint our desserts on the table, the server improvised by sprinkling cinnamon in the flame of the birthday candle to make it sparkle. Four stars instead of five because a couple elements (i.e. a cookie soil on one of the desserts) tasted "off". I'm not usually overly picky out of respect for the cooks who work so hard to serve delicious food, but I do notice when things taste a touch rancid.
We went to Affäre for my husband's birthday dinner and loved the atmosphere and the menu. Service was prompt and friendly and the German food was mostly good and authentic, especially the Spätzle! We also appreciated the wine and beer selection. As a note to the chef: Please go easy on the Maggi! While this is still a staple in some restaurants in Germany, it is not exactly fine cuisine and did nothing to enhance the Jägerschnitzel. The sauce tasted like pure Maggi and was almost inedible.
The tartar was very yummy though a bit too salty. The veal schnitzel was dry, overdone, and a bit bland and the condiments and cucumber salad too sour. The beef roulade was like fancy meat loaf and tasted okay. The cabbage was delicious, but, again, a bit on the sour side considering it took up the majority of the plate. The drinks, vibe, and service were fantastic. I would have rated this a 4/5 but one of our party had stomach issues after eating the beef roulade and cabbage. I may give this place another try, but probably not for a while.
I partook a four-course menu with a date on Valentine’s Day. The overall experience left both of us more to be desired, especially for the price that I paid. We went in a bit early and were seated a bit after 3:40PM. The restaurant was almost empty at the time. After the second course (pasta), we asked for bread to mop up the sauce because the flavor was pretty good but the serving size was small. The bread service took more than 10 minutes to come to our table, but the bread was only a bit lukewarm and came with hard butter, not softened or seasoned, so I was a bit perplexed why it took that long. (Also the bread service was not included and cost $12 extra for 4 half slices of bread and two soft pretzel sticks. Make that what you will.) After the bread service, and the pasta plates were removed, we waited for more than 30 minutes for the venison to be served. The venison felt barely lukewarm, while the potato gratin was hot as expected, making me suspect something wrong happened to the kitchen. My date was not impressed by the venison, either, commenting on the lack of flavor without the blueberry gastrique sauce. The dessert was not impressive, either. I didn’t like the dollop of the whipped cream as it contributed no flavor to the cake, and that the ice cream was more of a sorbet with large ice crystals and sloppy consistency. Finally, we finished the 4 courses after exactly 2 hours, after paying $98 per person (as priced, excluding everything else like beverage and a la carte). My date didn’t find the meal worthwhile for the price and felt sorry for me. Ugh.
Highly mediocre. The atmosphere is great, service is pretty damn good, but the food is just mediocre. We had the poutine, which was super flavorful, and tasted great, but even the fries not covered in gravy were super soggy. If the fries were crispy, 11/10, as is 7/10. I had the wild boar, awful. So over cooked it was like sawdust, and lacked any flavor. Best part of the dish was the spatzel, which is…just spatzel. Overall, a super mediocre night out for $200. I’ve heard nothing but great reviews of Affäre, and left highly disappointed.
Made reservations three weeks prior. Showed up an around 7:00 for reservation and wasn’t seated until 7:40. Server didn’t know anything about the wines and we couldn’t hear what she was saying. We did the restaurant week tasting and wine pairing. The menu items were bland and tiny portions. Two of the dish’s were basically the same except one was “wild boar paste” and the main course was “Pheasant paste”. The server only seemed concerned with filling up waters. The pieces of fish in the picture I took were a little bigger than a quarter. The lobster foam didn’t have a single hint of lobster flavor.
I don't know if the chefs just had a bad night but my entree was atrocious. At a cost of $180 for me and my wife (one appetizer, one canned herbal water, two entrees, and two desserts), I've never felt more ripped off by a restaurant. Our server was kind, funny, and attentive. It took maybe 45 minutes to an hour to get our entrees after we ordered them. The lobster poutine truffle fries were good. I don't think it necessarily tasted like lobster and it needed a bit more salt, but overall the flavors were well balanced which is notable considering truffle is often over utilized. After a lot of deliberation, I chose the boar chops. The two chops were small, like lamb lollipop small. They were overcooked with one being the toughest, driest pieces of meat I have ever had the displeasure of ingesting in my life. It's like they dropped it under the grill grate and forgot about it. They were burnt. No, they were not just "charred," they were burnt with crusty, thick, bitter patches of char. They were probably unseasoned. Not underseasoned. Unseasoned. What wasn't burnt tasted faintly of pork and nothing else. The herb spätzle was so flavorless that I doubt it was prepared in a room that even smelled of spices or had visible herbs. If it wasn't for the faintest of flavor of eggy dough, it would have tasted of nothing. I almost couldn't tell it was in my mouth while I was chewing it. The two pieces of asparagus were, again, unseasoned. They were also inedibly burnt. The intense bitterness of the lack of proper temperature control was the only flavor. The roasted carrots were mostly fine other than being burnt on the ends. The mushroom demi-glace was decent because it was salty, but it did not taste like anything beyond a gravy any competent cook would make at home. Unfortunately this was not enough to save the dish. This was my first time trying pavlova so I don't know what it's supposed to be like, but it seemed fine. Nothing about it was particularly delicious, but I ate all of it. My overall impression is that I never want to eat here again and if I wasn't there for a friend's birthday, I would have sent back my plate and asked for a refund.
