From my understanding they're under new ownership and they are now open for lunch. At first site I was rather confused at the entrance because no one is there to greet you and there are 2 huge gray doors that don't exactly communicate "come in". However, I am so glad I peeked in because I was greeted by very friendly people and a beautiful atmosphere / ambiance, where you can have a conversation, and the music isn't overpowering nor are other people's conversations. Good for a couple or groups. They have more than enough seating. We ordered as an appetizer Jajeek (see pic). We've never had it before but dang it was very good. For the main course we ordered the lamb shank and the mixed beef plate (see pics). Delicious doesn't begin to describe what we were eating.. All the different spices, textures and flavors were a thrill ride for the taste buds. I drank a Diet Coke (my go to) and Omar had an iced tea (see pic) which wasn't even on the menu but the waitress, Rowa (awesome), made it from what she had available and Omar says it was delicious. There was a LOT of food. So we had to take some home but that was just to make room for dessert...kunafa (see pic)...yummers!!! Are we coming back? HECK YA and you might want to give it a try too. Reasonably priced for these days of inflationary pressures.

We came out for Ladies Night at Charcoal House in San Diego and had the best time! The food was beyond good — everything from the appetizers to the main course was packed with flavor. The live entertainment made the night even more fun, with great vibes all around. Huge shoutout to Krystel — she was incredibly kind, welcoming, and truly made us feel like VIPs. The place is newly remodeled, and so happy that they kept the best waitress they had (Mary Jane). The Cognac Filet is to die for. The cognac sauce is tasty with lots of mushrooms, I highly recommend this entree.

I ordered the ribeye steak and it was very good! I also got to taste the lamb chops which were very tasty as well. Definitely recommend eating here. :)

Had an office party there. It was great. All the bartenders were nice. The servers were nice and not too. Mention beautiful, kind, and courteous.

This was my first time visiting Charcoal House and boy was I pleasantly surprised. The place was spacious, clean with outstanding decor and soft music notes playing in the background adding to the already serene ambience of this beautiful restaurant. I was served by Rowa, who was outstanding and explained the menu options in detail. Based on her expert recommendation I went with the Mixed Grilled plate and it was absolutely delicious. The fillet mignon was bursting full of flavor and the beef tikka was tender and juicy. I have been to quite a few Mediterranean restaurant and the quality of the food and service here was the best I’ve ever received by a mile. I would highly recommend and would most certainly be returning.

One of my Favorite restaurants! During the pandemic they have used the time to do some renovations while they were closed but they are scheduled to reopen in late January 2022. This place is awesome and I look forward to going back and supporting their business as soon as the open up again. :) Incredible food, incredible atmosphere!

Great mid century ambiance, attentive and speedy waitress. Early Bird menu prices were also mid century, I swear! Quality ingredients, beautifully prepared. This place got so much better with the new owner. Food is actually really good, we used to eat before going there, but now we cannot wait to go there to eat. Drinks are reasonably priced and the hookah master they got there knows what he is doing. Tip, 1.make reservations if you plan to come Friday night or on the weekend. It is usually a full house. 2. I planned a surprise 30th birthday event here for my fiance, and it was wonderful! The manager of the restaurant, Rami, made sure to accommodate my party of about 25 people as best he could. The night included amazing food and hookah, a lovely belly dancer, and overall great service. Our waitress was the best. We can't wait to go back!

I went to this very cute restaurant for the first time, and the service is unmatched and the food tastes like the cook made it with love! I absolutely adore this place and will 10/10 recommend this food spot to anyone looking for a great vibe and incredible food and service.

This place has amazing ambiance, food, service (Mary Jane) rocks! Their happy hour menu portions were over filling amazingness. Had the Prime Rib, it was delectable. Creamy horseradish sauce! 🤪 Yum! Sourdough dinner rolls. Ribeye! Can't wait to go again. Definitely on my dinner list! Excellent drink and beer selection too!

Such a shame. After taking over this iconic steak house the new owners have turned this eatery in to a ghost town. My steak was perfect and the bartender Amy was a delight. Maybe tow truck owners should stick to towing cars. Experienced management needed badly. Good luck..

I attended an event last night at this great restaurant and I could see the high level of attention from the owners and managers of this great restaurant. Great service A+, great hookah, the food was very delicious I took some home with me for my lunch next day and the teast was delicious. Great job to the owners.and managers.

First time here. Was expecting steaks and such. Interesting place. It's got a cigar and hookah lounge. That was the downside cuz I hate smoke and it is present. Not in the restaurant part we were in. Quite a varied menu selection. Everyone was p look eased with their choices. Will go back again.

Very comfortimg with a warm environment and customer service is excellent. Before I eat my meal I'll visit the bar for a drink or two and whoever is tending bar is always very attentive and social. This is my new spot to go to and recommend this spot to my friends and family.

This is a gorgeous place you would not want to miss. It is beautifully decorated and sumptuous. I was first struck by the most silky and delicious hummus appetizer I've ever consumed. Then comes a beautiful entree generously portioned and mouth watering. Prices are moderate. Service is friendly and impeccable. You gotta stop reading this and go there!

Excellent food and good service. The only issue I had were the portions, I ordered a walful and the size was medium. Other restaurants have larger walful for a lower price. I would go back again.

We take advantage of their early bird dinners but prices have gone up at least $3. Rib eye now $20 for 14 oz, not bad :)

Beautiful, love the hookah and the karaoke. Food was amazing, but I wish I could eat it outside. For what ever reason they won't let you eat outside where you can hookah.

The food is really good. Our waitress was Amy and she is always awesome because there are usually 13+ she is serving. She is super helpful and has a great attitude. They're remodeling....again....it seems like they always are, for the past 5 yrs, i think. But anyway there outside lounge looks awesome with all the couches and than there hooka area looks nice. Looks like they have a karaoke area too? They had before. Maybe?? Overrall nice place.

We were on the prowl for late night dining recently and ended up at Charcoal House at about 10:45 pm. They're open until 2 am. There were a couple of people at the bar but no one in the restaurant. It didn't matter as they let us have our pick of tables (we chose a booth). This place is different since the menu isn't really focused on one type of food. Charcoal house implies grilled food but the menu is large and varied with a Mediterranean flare. It's also a hookah lounge, which was apparent when we walked in due to the lingering vapor and sweet smell in the air. Our server was friendly and very attentive. We ordered the appetizer sampler with hummus, baba ganoush, jajik and tabbouleh with fresh, warm pita bread. It was a lot of food so we decided to split the chicken tikka plate with rice and a Ceasar salad for dinner. Our server split everything for us, which was very nice and not typical. We didn't have to ask, she offered. The food was really good and there was a ton of it. We will try the shawarma next time. This would be a great place to come and share small plates since their appetizer menu has so many options. It seemed like the place was starting to fill up a bit by the time we were leaving with a second round of bar goers. Very happy to have found an awesome option for late night dining. Come here!

Great place for Karaoke, gets really busy in friday and saturday. Great late night place, where it gets elbow to elbow. If you catch a full moon you can find the right type of crowd and man.

PRICEY! Drinks too expensive, food too expensive- but good. Karaoke time has too many young kids for the bar scene.

Today, 11/11, we experienced the worst visit here. The hookah was burnt (they changed it twice), the beer is warm, they are extremely short staffed and most importantly I found plastic in the beef shawarma….. The staff tried to make it up to us by bringing us beef tikkah and it was so salty that I couldn’t swallow it. I don’t recommend this place for entertainment at all! I’ll keep going to other places or stay home before I think of coming here ever again.

The food was really nice,and the hookah qas a lovely experience. But the service we received was pretty subpar. the blonde waitress with glasses was very apathetic and even condescending with us at times. The wait times between orders was unnecessarily long. Which wouldnt normally be an issue if the waitress wasnt rude.

Really disappointed. The place was empty on a Sunday evening at 7:00? The server was clueless about the wine list and the lights were at full lumen and tje music was so loud and from the 1950's all Frank Sinatra circa Las Vegas. The food was average. Very reminiscent of Black Angus in the 1980's.

Well... If you go to the bar be prepared to get a show. Moving couches, boxes everywhere and employees yelling at each other. A real back room feel that I neither asked for or wanted. This place needs a little work.

My salmon was good, I found it weird and crazy you have to walk through the hookah lounge to use the restroom. That part is absolutely awful:(

Two stars for false advertising. Their website offers a 32 ounce, Cowboy Ribeye for $19.99. NOT!! - they informed that they really don't serve that - it's just a come on. We had steaks and they were decent and reasonably priced - very friendly and competent waitress. BUT - we hate bait and switch advertising.

The servers are kind and attentive. That's the only reason for the stars. The food is bland or too tough to eat. The bread is even bad. I'd not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Save your money.

Leaves much to be desired: this was my first time visiting Charcoal House since the remodel. The decor and fire pits give it a luxurious feel, and the menu items and prices also lead you to believe it's higher end. Unfortunately that's not the experience we had. I ordered the philly steak sandwich which was a skimpy portion with dried & chewy over cooked meat, served with heavily salted stale fries. Regarding ambiance: not sure why ownership or management chooses to play GANGSTER RAP music with all the expletive laden language at a near nightclub volume?!? We found ourselves yelling to talk to each other at a lounge. The rap music gets old due to no variety of genres. We were there for a few hours trying to enjoy a meal & decent hookah and never heard Arabic music or any variety of genres even after we requested it twice! Keep in mind, this was on a slow weekday night during a "cold winter night" so for having less than 20 people there, the food service took 45 mins, & had to ask for utensils, & salt/pepper. Also, it's tacky to charge for bottled water without notifying the customer prior to adding that to an already overpriced food menu($11 basic cucumber salad) & average hookah. I'll vote with my dollars and take them elsewhere.

This is the second time I am here I was extremely disappointed.. I had a baba ganoog plate and it was for 8 dollars which is expensive but it's okay then I wanted bread to eat it with they put a 2 dollars charge then they added 20% charge to the bill.. This is the last time I come to a RIP off place.. I always hear about this place and I say yea yea yea another hookah place but seriously I like this place.. very cool nice not lout place u can talk to other ppl without being disturbed.. I had really good time and the servers are not that pushy at all very good service.. they serve alcohol which i dont like personally.

Horrible experience. We walked in and they said we don't allow people with shorts cause my friend was wearing a pair of shorts. Also to mention there was 3 people in there with shorts. We asked them why are they're in there when they're wearing shorts they responded with "their special people."

It’s really a shame, I asked for tickets 3 weeks ago and they said it’s private and I know people they got ticket same day when I asked for ticket they said it’s private party only. After that I found out that they sold tickets only for preferred customers. What a shame

Remodeling looks great. Glad they cleaned it up. Bar is so lame now and it's basically a hooka hang out now. Place use to rock for music and dancing in EC. Wont be back again.

I love this place and their food I went to eat and I ordered shawarma sandwich Waited over 35 minutes and after I said cancel my order, the waitress brought the sandwich after another 10 min, it took me 45 min to wait for my sandwich, I love this place but I would never over food there again

Disappointed management has done such a poor job. Apparently he's decided hooka is more valuable than a dinner house in our neighborhood. Won't go back as menu keeps getting smaller and smaller. Obvious for some time they don't care.

So the reason for my 1 star ratings is this: They posted on social media that DJ Aseel is coming to San Diego. The event was held at Parq club and restaurant in downtown. I got a VIP ticket because I'm a big fan of DJ Aseel. However, today Charcoal House posted that DJ Aseel is having another party at their place and that the tickets are sold out. When they didn't even promote the tickets or where to buy them. So I'm really upset and this kind of thing is not acceptable. I hope they'll consider informing their regular clients about these kinda events not just selective people.

The worst customer service I’ve ever seen, They did had A DJ Aseel tonight but the tickets were only for preferred customers what a shame. We asked them 3 weeks ago since they started to handed tickets they said no we don’t have any event on February 9th 2023

Worst service ever! First, when we sat down they didnt even ask us what we wanted to drink! They also gave us three different menus, which really confused us! They also had three different waiters come because no one understood the medditeranean menu. Next, they didnt give us a knife with our bread and butter! How are we supposed to spread the butter, with our hands?!?! Next, their chicken tikka plate only came with rice and only one skewer of chicken. $17 for rice and 5 pieces of chicken? No thanks! Not to mention the rice had no flavor! And after telling them 10 times we wanted the CHICKEN shawarma plate, they gave us BEEF shawarma. And there wasnt even alot of people so how could they get confused? We will NEVER come back!!

The hookah is super expensive, $30, and they try to put you a cheap hookah with synthetic coals, the place is more beautiful than before but the services do not correspond to the prices. Not recommended.

The atmosphere is awesome! I’ve been here a few times. However, my last visit wasn’t as great! They took forever, and hookah wasn’t good.

Menu has been slashed. Dining room being changed to “banquet room”. All owners care about is Hookah and that clientele. So sad to see a landmark La Mesa turned into this. Staff that have been there forever are awesome but with this change they’ve lost our business.

Bad costumer service. My first visit was ok, but the last time was awful. The place is nice but it took them forever to deliver the hookah, and it wasn’t even good. They did change it for me and charge for a refill but it was still bad!

No way to go back to this place! Bad bad badddd! The service is so badddddd! We sit for over 30min no one asked us what we want to drink or eat! Then every time we ordered something, it takes them over 30min to bring it! Trust me even the water bottles! I had to put at least one star to write this review!

No restaurant seating anymore. Only bar, and (bar food) and hookah. No more prime rib, no world-famous Cognac filet. This makes me sad. The Cognac filet was to-die-for. Sizzling on the hot skillet, that rich, delicious sauce and perfectly cooked filet. You have lost two good customers, and really I hope Mary Jane (best waitress ever) is doing well, and looking for work elsewhere. As that is where we will be dining tonight. I no longer recommend Charcoal House😔

I love this place. The food and vibes are great. I am giving 1 star for this reason only When I called to ask about the DJ Aseel Party, the manger said they don’t know about it, but after that I found out the same manager sold tickets to people 3 weeks ago. They should treat all their customers the same. I know this place is professional, but this time it was not. Still love this place.

Extremely unprofessional staffs. Reserved a table but there was a party going on and we couldn't enter. Noor helped us reserve and she was totally unaware of the party, which was very unprofessional. Noor completely misinformed us, and we were hosting guests from Texas. It was so embarrassing for my family. One of the staffs was a big liar, initially he said that he knew Noor and the later when my family came in to see what was going on, he was lying on my face.

Service is absolutely a joke. They refused me service because i was wearing shorts. Every other person (male and female) in front of us had on shorts. From what i gathered this is their entry rule. "If you let our sleezy security and enterance staff hit on you and creep on you, your allowed in. Or if your a guy and the security knows you. Modern day sexism. This place shouldnt be around. SHAME on them. Dont waste your time on this shady establishment. Go to any other hookah lounge where they will feel the need to trest you like a human. Not like a animal... New ownership should be ashamed. This place used to be awesome. Now TRASH.

Closed the steak house. Menu reduced to no more filet or prime rib, which was in most of their great dishes, like the bistro prime rib sandwich. Indifferent staff when asked why the bar was 82°, while looking for a cool drink. Veteran staff members are still awesome, but a little handcuffed by new owners. Sad to see it go for the locals who grew up there.

Put a star because it doesn't let you put any! Service really sucks in here! Came with a friend and order 2 hookahs first they take forever to bring them and we were pretty much the only onces outside and inside was almost empty! When they finally bring them both had way more water than what they should, we let the server know and he just throw the water right there in front of us! We ask for ice coffee and they didn't have! Ask for a coffee and a cup of ice on the side instead 😒😒😒 I worked as a server and sometimes with a little bit of effort you can make costumers happy! I guess they don't care anyways they still get paid! NEVER COMING BACK!!!

Slow service. One in family waited extra 15 minutes to get food after all rest were served. Chicken tasted as though it was cooked from frozen and over cooked. Steaks were over cooked, vegetables were way undercooked. Not a good experience for us.

I let off the gas, flashed my brake lights, and he stayed on my tail, even when I was down to 10 MPH! He finally passed me ON THE RIGHT. The road is one lane. I saw when he caught up to the traffic ahead he sat right on their tail also. And as I thought about this later, I remember that he has done this to me before. You better fire him before he causes an accident. "Law brothers?" If any of you order take out, because of this reckless driving, your food might not get delivered!

On Valentine's Day, we went and I was very disappointed with the service. The appetizers were only one of each dish, when there should have been two, and the dinner was small for 11 of us. There was also a delay in serving the drinks.
