Great food open late and has some amazing seating locations next to the river. The food portions were large and the menu will satisfy even the most picky of children you might have the luxury of taking to the restaurant. The staff was amazing and a lot of fun to talk with, we really enjoyed this location.
Arrived near closing time for dinner with the family and I have to say they were very accommodating. Our meals were great. The Black Bear Burger is a beast of a burger. You have to try if visiting. Likewise you won't be disappointed with the portion size on other entrees. Cuz you're going home with leftovers. Thanks Black Bear for the experience.
The food and atmosphere alone can sell the place, but the guy who we assume has to be the owner was SO FUN, we literally didn't want to leave. I left him like a 40% tip and regretting leaving more as soon as we left. It was such a perfect experience. Will forever come back here every time we're in Lake Placid.
They treated us very good and gave us such beautiful food and service definitely would come back again
Blackbear Restaurant has phenomenal food! The rib-eye steaks are tender, good quality meat. The fried cod is simply delicious and the chicken parmigiano was exceptional. The portions are very generous and I could barely finish my 16oz rib-eye! The staff are attentive and professional. My family and I loved our experience there and will definitely be back when we visit Lake Placid again.
Good service. Got seated fast (and on the balcony) even though they were packed. Fast service. Our waitress was superb and the bussers were quick to remove dishes. Food was tasty. The crab cakes were stellar! Meals were just as good. Only criticism is to check your salt and pepper shakers, ours was too hard to shake out. Minor in my book. Still 5 stars.
Visiting lake placid for a holiday and enjoyed 2 excellent meals here ! The food was first rate and service exceptional! The owners went out of their way to serve us meals of our choice . The seafood and chicken dishes were amazing ! Highly recommend this restaurant
Amazing restaurant!!! We walked on Monday night on the main street and decided to walk in, the place was full according the covid situation. We waited like 10 min and we got a great table! The server was really friendly and took good care of us. We had nice montenegro wine and delicious baked trout with vegetables, very nice dining experience. For dessert we went for tiramisu. Hope to come soon back in Lake Placid and to go to this restaurant!!!
So so cozy and lovely to dine there! The food was tasty and the staff were just delightful! Would highly recommend!
Food was amazing, service was great. Portion sizes were big. The Blackbear steak, 14oz prime rib steak with cheese, onion, mushroom topping was delicious. Meal also came with a large side of fries and a salad.
Okay, this is a must whenever in Lake Placid. They have the best calamari I ever had. The seafood pasta plate with vodka sauce was out of this world!Super fresh scallops and shrimp, with home made vodka sauce. They also served a fresh garden salad that was super fresh and yummy, not to mention their home made bread. My husbands burger was amazing too.The size of their portions are amazing! The atmosphere and the stuff is top notch. Loved everything about and will see you next year!
I was really craving for a grilled whole fish, and I saw rainbow trout on their menu so I went there. We arrived around 3pm, but fish is only on dinner menu. Luckily our waitress was able to order for me! And yes it tastes really good. It also comes with a generous amount of veggie sauté. Will come back again if I’m around in the future.
Service was excellent, professional. Restaurant is clean, food is high quality. We will definitely come back
I love this place owners and stuff makes you be part of family… food delicious… lake view amazing
For starters, my wife said the salad was “light and delicious” and the Italian dressing was very good. For entrees I got the chicken parm and it was top tier. Not too heavy not too light. Very generous chicken portion and fair pasta portion too. As a chicken parm connoisseur I can say this was excellent. Half the battle with good chicken parm or any Italian food for that matter is good sauce, almost as good as Nonno’s homemade sauce. My wife got the spaghetti’ and meatballs and gave it a review of “very delicious” again, the sauce is excellent.
It was a week night and right before closing time. The manager/bartender was very nice and allowed us to sit and have dinner. The food was delicious!! We had Chicken Marsala and Fettuccine Carbanara for entrees and a Caprese salad, too. Overall, it's a great place, and I would highly recommend dinner!
We stopped at Black Bear while in Lake Placid and were greeted by a beautiful view of Mirror Lake and some great food! Restaurant wasn’t too busy on Tuesday for a late lunch, so we were seated on the deck (try to get a spot there if possible)! I really enjoyed my blue cheese burger, and was happy I chose the sweet potato fries as they were delicious - the regular fries seemed like nothing special. Would go back!!
My husband and I were just hungry and strolled into this place. I didn’t expect the delish meal we had from start to finish. Everything was amazing. The staff was beyond attentive and nice. We had the perfect seat on the deck.
Always our favorite place to go for a nice "fancy dinner" when we're in Lake Placid. The food is always delicious and you'll never find a friendlier, harder working family running the whole show. The restaurant is usually bustling, but you'll always be treated like first priority. Times are not easy and help is scarce, but they never fail to keep customers happy!
An excellent dinner right and a great view of the lake. For a dinner of 2, it's a little pricey depending on what's considered pricey. To give an example of what we had. 2 glasses of wine, bread, side salads, an appetizer of seafood, and 2 seafood entrees came to about $55 a person. All very much worth it. Might consider a reservation ahead of time.
Great service and friendly staff. We didn’t have any problems the other reviewers encountered. We arrived at 6:15 with a party of 8. Seated right away, the waiter came and took our drink order within 5 minutes. Probably got our food within 20 - 25mins after placing the order. I ordered the Delmonico Steak med rare, but it came out med well. I mentioned to the waiter and he immediately ordered me a replacement. Once again no complaints at all. We did find out that they are shorted staff like everyone else. Normally a staff of 16, now down to 11. Never would have notice the night we were there. Also great view from their balcony outdoor seating.
It's in a nice location at the end (or start) of the main strip. If you can get a spot on the patio the you'll have a great view of Mirror Lake. I just popped in for lunch and had a Turkey Reuben and it was very satisfying. Not too heavy or filling. Staff were friendly and attentive.
Family owned restaurant, makes you feel that you are part of the family. The home made bread is the best home town touch. New York Strip steak was cooked to perfection. Recommend it to anyone visiting Lake Placid. A must see.
Took our visiting friends here for dinner. Being a local I know where the good places are, but I had not tried here. After reading other reviews we decided to try it. We were not disappointed. We were able to get a table for six right away. Very friendly staff and management. Dinner prices were comparative to other places in the area. The food was outstanding. Many choices on the menu and list of specials. We all had something different and zero complaints. Large portions of very tasty food. I had the hot Chicken Caesar salad and brought half home. Chicken grilled perfectly. Lots of take home boxes. We all had water, but there was an extensive beverage menu.
The best and most unusual escargot appetizer I have ever had. Don’t let my photo fool you, I took the picture after I had eaten most of the “snails”. And there were still plenty left. This should be a meal and not an appetizer. So filling it was impossible to finish their special of the night Filet minion and lobster tail. Which was also VERY good. FAST and friendly service. This place is a GEM. I will come back and order the escargot with a salad.
I come to Lake Placid 3 times a year. I am remembered and greeted like family when I come to this restaurant!! Coming here is something I look forward to for that reason! Service is always awesome and the food is great for a quick lunch and even an appetizer and a cocktail mid-day. When you are appreciated and welcomed, even by sight, it makes you want to come back over and over!
This is a very beautiful restaurant right on mirror lake, our favorite lake in the Adirondacks! The service was very good. The food was delicious. The staff were all authentic Italians and very nice, very accommodating! We will definitely go back next time we're in town. Inside and outside dining available.
So glad we ate here last evening. Beautiful outdoor seating overlooking the lake. Service was better than any restaurant I've ever been to! Lovely dinner, big portions. Flavors really shined through in the chicken roma that I had. My partner said it was the best meal he ever had (surf and turf). We will absolutely return soon!

Great place to eat! It's a little pricier if your with your family, but we knew that going in. We would highly recommend the Lake Placid steak or the Fried Fish platter.
Family of 10 just ate at this restaurant. Everyone loved their meals from fried haddock to tuna. Clean, great service, great bread, great service and terrific hot meals. You can’t go wrong.

Food was fabulous, the atmosphere was exceptional, and the service amazing! I never order seafood outside Maine. So glad I did.
Amazing food. Parmeggiana Veal and Chicken were incredible. Fettucini Alfredo with shrimp…and they have ESPRESSO ! price very reasonable vs others restaurants.

This is a little price but the food was good and it's a nice place to treat yourself. It's got a nice decor and the wait staff were very attentive and helpful. Enjoyed our meals and would recommend.
This restaurant offers a great view of mirror lake. I was here for lunch on a weekday so the restaurant was quiet and peaceful. Food was good and priced fairly. My issue was that the waiter kept calling me lady which I personally found insulting but to be fair I never corrected him.
This is a cute but well put together little restaurant. The views of the lake are nice. At the time we went, our waitress seemed, well kind of blah but not rude. Who knows maybe she was having a bad day. However that did not effect our meal. We had the Chicken Scarpello and the Rainbow Trout. The Chicken Scarpello was good but a bit watery the Trout was very good. A lot of things on the menu looked good to try so we will probably be back.
The food was great - the service was great - I loved the ambiance of the restaurant BUT they list a non cash adjustment 3% on the bill ONLY - it was not posted anywhere else that I could see - I didn't see it on the menu - I do not believe that they are in compliance with the requirements to do this.
Black Bear offers a satisfying dining experience in Lake Placid, pairing good, well-prepared food with charming old-style décor that gives the place a classic, cozy feel. The atmosphere leans traditional and comfortable, making it a nice spot to settle in and take your time.
Lovely spot. The food was lovely. The owner/bartender went out of his way to serve us something not quite on the menu. Folks were super friendly. Definitely recommend if you are in town
Pretty happy with this place. I arrived with my family a little concerned because we are Muslim and have dietary restrictions and they accommodated all that (according to one of the servers he said he would take care of it all). The fact that they were so accommodating was awesome! The food was pretty good some stuff was bland I think because they accommodated us so they couldn’t add or mix the usual ingredients but overall it was good.
The food was very fresh and tasty, so were the drinks. Service very kind. I think that the table set up could be nicer as only the seats by the windows offer good views, the rest of the restaurant is dark.
First time at Lake Placid. Me and two friends and I stopped at the black bear to have lunch after a hike. The food was really good. The service, however, wasn't that great. Our waitress kind of had an attitude. We chose that restaurant because it's on the water which was very nice and also because they had some vegetarian option.
I wasn’t sure what to make of it when I first walked in. It’s a restaurant that wants to be too many things with a dinner menu that spans American, French, Italian with a sprinkle of other countries - but it’s not a fusion restaurant so you wind up with a lot of options. We ordered a few appetizers for the table (we were 12) - be prepared for large portions that are generally hard to distinguish because there’s so much going on each plate. I can’t help but think what Gordon Ramsey would think walking into this place. They have about 10 different versions of steaks and we ordered NY strips and filet mignon’s, they were generally under seasoned but on point in terms of temperature which was a disappointment. Every dish you order gives large portions on big plates so you will spend a good amount of time shuffling things around on the table to make room for more food , especially with a large party. The location and views are obviously great and the restaurant is always busy as a result.
Our first time in lake placid and we came here after a long hike, our family of 5 we asked to be seated outside and they were happy to accommodate us. Our server was very kind that my kids started cleaning the plates and helping clear the table to make it easier for him! Food was good, the fish and chips actually was great it was well seasoned not oily and very nice.
You'll want to add this restaurant to your itinerary. Great views. We enjoyed our meal from the kitchen-side. Delicious. We were however bummed to be seated near a loud, unaware group of Buffalo parents. They allowed their three kids to be out of control. One party next to us wanted to move outside to avoid the commotion. They were asked to quiet down but it did not register. They even mentioned how aware they were of their early actions with other parents -- but yet they were CLUELESS at a dinner table. Amazing. I bet you'll miss this problem. Go enjoy, a great on Lake Placid.
Have to go off of our two visits. I love this place and always go here. First day I did the ADK Burger and side salad. I have to say it was awesome. The second day I tried the Haddock with side salad and fries. The one side of the haddock was hard and chewy. Just the end. I did not complain or say anything as the rest of it was excellent. I ate it all and I will continue to go here. Obviously we hit up this restaurant two out of the two days we were in town 😂. My wife got the Turkey club sandwich and said it was very good. So good ordered it for both times we went there.
We had a very nice meal here last Saturday night. The place was pretty crowded, but we were sat right away. Our server greeted us quickly and took our drink orders. Our meals were delivered fairly quickly, the food was prepared correctly, served hot, and were large portions. I had the short ribs with pasta and it was excellent. My wife had the local Adirondack trout which was nicely prepared but a little plain. It took a little too long for us to get our check but all in all it was a great meal.

Food was alright. Really felt like the only reason to eat here was to eat on the lake. The food had OK flavor that I could get pretty much anywhere
Right on the end of main street in Lake Placid. Seating available on the deck with great views of Mirror Lake. Our server was terrific. Very friendly and efficient. The mozzarella sticks were very good and served with plenty of marinara sauce. My BLT was not great. The bread was too toasted (maybe stale too) and the bacon was tiny strips and super thin and way too crispy. Not enough mayo either. The fries were pretty good though. My wife has the Philly cheese steak and is was ok in her opinion. Nothing special. Bottle beer was $6. If we do every go back we'd def try something else on the menu. Try it if you'd like but there are lots of options on main street in Lake Placid.
I ordered a steak medium rare. Came out medium well and way to salty with nasty veggies and baked potatoe that looked like it had been 3x baked. Salad was good, French Onion was ok.
We came here for dinner around 6 on a weeknight. The wait was short and the host was able to allow us to leave and come back rather than wait on site. The waiter was quick to bring us menus bread, water and our drinks and we both ordered the special. Here is where things dropped a few stars. The food was lackluster lacking flavor and seemed to be re heated. While portions where good the lack of flavor really turned us both away from the food.
My family and I dined here as a group of ten (along with some squabbling babies in tow), and the staff was incredible accommodating. Getting a table at the far side of the restaurant, with perfect views of the lake, felt like winning the lottery. The menu has a diner-like variety and the food is decent. The burgers were the clear favorite. It was ordered by most of our party, and it's pretty stacked with veggies, bacon, AND two sausage slices (a random topping, but who's going to complain about more processed protein? Not me!). Anyone who ordered fries at the table had to endure sharing with those who didn't because they arrived irresistibly hot and fresh. A few things fell just a little flat. The mozzarella wrap was a little plain and bland, and someone who ordered the French onion soup ended up scraping most of the cheese layer off, pronouncing it to be just 'a little too much'. But throughout our meal, service was polite and responsive, making it a great spot to grab a bite in spite of the few meal falls. The views are likely the best part of dining here, especially if you're lucky enough to snag a spot closest to the waterfront views. We were too large a group to take advantage, but if you're a smaller party and the weather's favorable, I'd definitely ask about getting a seat up on the second floor patio where I'd bet the view of Mirror Lake would be even more stunning.
Stunning views of Mirror lake. Service was slow but it was packed. Food was good and prices were reasonable. We were lucky to find a place to serve us. Everything was packed. Ordered spiedini, lol …

We sat outside on deck, view of Mirror Lake was stunning. Food was average, not really that great, but okay. Service was good.
This place was so overpriced… almost 200 dollars for 4 people. It was for sure not worth the price. The atmosphere was horrible, everywhere was crowded. Our waitress was quick and nice but her kindness does not make up for the horrible alfredo I had. Chunky pieces of garlic and my sauce separated from the pasta so I couldn’t even taste it. I would not come back here. I’d rather pick a chain restaurant than this “tourist restaurant”.
We came for lunch with a large party which was split into 3 different tables. (No reservation so can't complain) But the food was just terrible and expensive.
First timer for early dinner. We arrived at 4pm which is when they put out the dinner menu. Greeter seemed both perplexed and apathetic to our arrival. When our waitress came around she was even more disinterested. I'm not looking to make a friend, but I do expect some common courtesy. The bread came out fast and it wasn't bad, but for homemade bread I expected it fresh from the oven and tastier. The salads were tiny, but good. The entree was terrible. The veggies were nearly cold, the potato could have used ten more. minutes in the oven and all that came with it was a pre-packaged sour cream. No butter nor did our waitress ask us if we needed anything. The $30 steak was lukewarm and mostly fat. The mushrooms were very good. Our waitress NEVER came and asked how our food was until we had finished the meal. Save yourself the disappointment and eat elsewhere!
Food was nothing special. Chicken Piccata had little flavor. Veal piccata was tough. All dishes including soup contain tons of broccoli. Would not recommend.
Plastic, plastic, plastic! Plates and coffee mugs were served in plastic which doesn’t sit right by me for hot items. The only thing they are missing now, is the plastic silverware. The food was good and the service did take a little longer. But it was busy so I understand the struggle.
The service was not that good. I paid tips without wanting to. They never refilled the water, they gave to the table who came after us bread & butter but they didn’t give us anything. Had to wait for a while to come and ask if we need anything or to ask for the bill. The staff were sitting on the table behind us 3 of them were eating? The food was fine, nothing special about it. Probably won’t come again as there’s nothing special about this place.
I'm not familiar with US dinner prices but it seems pricey to me and the portion is smaller than the average american portion. I got the grilled swordfish. It comes with a small salad which doesn't look fresh. As for the main course the accessories are good but the fish itself is small, a bit hard and tasted fishy. The baked haddock was the same, the fish was kinda dry although the portion is more generous. The black Bear Burger was small and meat was more cooked than requested. We're really not impressed and will not go back!
I was disappointed with my experience at the restaurant because the service felt like a car stuck in traffic, barely moving forward. Even though we had a reservation for 6:30 p.m., we were not seated until 7:00 p.m., which was frustrating. The staff seemed unorganized, with employees juggling multiple roles like a group of performers without a director, which made the restaurant feel chaotic. Because of this, the service was extremely slow throughout the meal. While the food itself was great and well prepared, the sluggish service took away from what could have been an enjoyable dining experience.

Went for dinner last night, yes they were busy our wait was only 30 minutes. We ordered calamari and we were told they were sold out. So we ordered something else. My dinner came and it wasn't hot. My French fries were cold - obviously my food sat before being served. On our way out we walked by the table of two people who were just served their appetizer - of calamari!!! I thought they sold out???? I won't be back not impressed.
Pretty empty except at window seating. Salad inedible with two huge plain onion rings & scant dressing. Mashed potatoes made ahead then broiled. No salt. Trout overcooked with an unpleasant lemon pepper powder in a pool of water. Veggies were soggy broccoli, ever present red peppers in all their dishes. Overpriced cheap wine.
After looking at the menu on their website our party of nine people decided to visit this restaurant. We were shocked when we opened the menus and the prices were nearly doubled, for example the $16 hamburger was now $26, etc. When we asked our server what the deal was she said the menu online was for lunch. We double checked thinking we made a mistake but there is no indication that what you're looking at is the lunch menu. Basically bait and switch. We stayed anyways and everything was meh. Inside is loud and cramped. Server did the bare minimum. Very unfriendly. Two of the dinners were good, all the others were average at best. Tiny portion of the haddock dinner - like half of a fillet for $30. Outrageous prices for what you get. The view is the only good thing about this restaurant.
the burger was supposed to be without cheese, the other burger was supposed to have no bun, the escargot was a big piece of bread, the chicken Mario came with no salad, and they completely forgot our last order. 6 dishes and not one of them was correct. Needless to say this was a really bad takeout experience. they charged a non-negotiable 20% gratuity for a child to take our order and give us a lot of sass. I don’t think I would ever recommend anyone to go eat here. Stewart’s has better service and better quality food for the price you pay. Cheers.
This food was overpriced and awful. I ordered the surf and turf (NY strip and scallops) and the scallops were SO salty they were inedible. The NY strip was chewy and could nearly be cut with a normal knife. I ordered it medium rare but got more of a rare. My boyfriend got one of the "specials" which was beef short rib on pappardelle with gravy. It was also terrible tasting and chewy.
Our service was great. I give our waiter 5 stars. The food however, for the prices you pay- you can tell it’s frozen , fried cod, onion rings and even the tarter dipping sauce was packaged. I think the calamari was even frozen. Salad had slimy wilted ends. Not impressed for this town. They did comp the fish dinner, however .
Amazing food but awful service, took 20 minutes to get us water even when it wasn’t busy. Forced us to tip 20% even though they didn’t deserve it. Won’t be going back. Wish we could have tipped the chefs not the waitress.
We had one of the worst meals we have had in a long time. Bill was $220 with tip for garbage food. And it was my son’s birthday, I was so upset to have such a horrible meal for him and us. The service was ok- very little attention to our table and somewhat rushed. So disappointed!!!
