Hidden gem operated by a friendly family. My new favorite spot for fish n chips! Beautifully breaded fish with fries that have the perfect amount of crispiness. And the calamari was great, so I'm sure everything on the menu would be. The interior is remarkably clean for the type of hole in the wall it is, but could use a little updating. You'll be glad you tried this place and will be thinking about when you can come back.
The food is very crispy. Undeniably crispy and good if it's busy there's a 30 aplus 45 minute wait but honestly after eating it didn't bother me waiting that long The fish and calamari were my favorites... I I would say this is a hole in a wall type of locations
Fresh food, great service , and peaceful environment thank you to the chef and his family
They have the BEST fish and chips I’ve ever had, no exaggeration. It’s a bit pricy, and the food doesn’t come out quick, but that’s because every piece of fish is prepared and cooked by Chef John, himself! Also, the portions are huge! My family and I are never disappointed with whatever we order.
Really love this place; I think its the best fish and chips in San Diego. The fish is so crispy. It's a little pricier than you would expect but everything is cooked fresh. I also wish they didn't charge extra for two condiments. I always eat my fish and chips with tartar sauce and vinegar; vinegar should be included.
The food was worth the wait. It took awhile but they were busy. About a 40 minute wait time. The fry and crispy batter was one of thr best ive had. The crunch on the bite was satisfying. I will definitely make the drive and come here again and agian.
Crazy expensive. The batter used here would make your shoes taste good - excellent. Great onion rings. Great haddock.
Atmosphere not the greatest but ignore that fact because the food is excellent. My family enjoyed and I would recommend that you give it a try. We will definitely return!
First time here and very impressed with the quality and freshness of the food! My husband and I shared a two piece of fish and chips plate, 6 hush puppies and 6 lumpia. Paid $50, more than I expected to pay, but I understand you’re paying for quality. And it was worth it. Definitely would come back. Very polite and friendly staff. Very clean looking inside. Probably the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The fish wasn’t greasy, nice and crispy batter. Nothing was greasy at all. Very impressed. Can’t wait to have it again.
Close to public transportation. The portions are large and very well prepared, however, the prices are moderately expensive. They offer a fish and chips and other fried seafood items. Open Monday through Saturday closed Sundays and holidays.
The food was fantastic. I got the fish and chips (French fries). Fish was fried perfect. A little crunchy and not greasy. It does take awhile to get your food because they are making it fresh. But, the wait is worth it.
Hidden gem. Food comes out piping hot, their batter is crispy and delicious. I recommend dining-in for the best experience. This is not fast food so it is a 15 min+ wait but so worth it for the made to order freshness. They don't have huge portions and it is on the pricier side but I've never left feeling unsatisfied. I recommend the Fish and Oyster with fries.
Delicious! This is definitely a gem spot for that famous fish and chips! This was my very first time eating at this local food spot and i can say it was worth every penny! Food was made fresh to order so taking my first bite of everything was perfectly battered and hot! if you have not been here do yourself a favor and just come by! You will not leave disappointed but you surely will feel nice and full! i will be back for more!
If you are looking for good fish and chips, this is a place for you. And the fried zucchini is excellent too. The service is good and I'm assuming the couple there are the owners, they were very gracious when I goofed and dropped my glass of water on the table and floor. It's a small place, but it is definitely worth a try. Just remember this is not health food, it's excellent fried food.
Our meals were great. We had individual combos. I had fish and shrimp. My wife had fish and clam strips. The fish was tasty, light and flaky. The portions were very generous as we had plenty left to take home and enjoy later. The shrimp were very good also as were the tatar sauce and cocktail sauce. We both had fries which were very good although we could have substituted zucchini, onion rings, hush puppies or cole slaw. This was our first visit based on our neighbor’s strong recommendation. Chef John’s met and exceeded our expectations. We definitely plan to come back.
I have had many fish and chip dishes in my lifetime, but I have to say, this is one of the best! I was missing that good ole British fry and tucked in the middle of Lemon Grove, San Diego there you will find Chef John's fish and chips restaurant. Order up a plate of that delicious crispy fried cod and seasoned fries and wow. Crispy and tasty fish fried to perfection. So fresh without that fishy smell. I am a malted vinegar person but his fresh tartar sauce is amazingly creamy with that touch of pickle in it! He offers other plates of seafood, shrimp, calamari or if you are not a seafood person, chicken tenders fried the same way! This is one of my favorite places to go for fish and chips! Go try it!
Oh. My. God. I read the reviews and I thought it couldn't really be as good as everyone says it is. IT. IS. Nothing special about the store itself. But it's CLEAN. The food may take a few more minutes to prepare than the average fast food place, but well worth the wait. I had the fish and shrimp combo. BEST FRIED FISH I ever had. GREAT SHRIMP too. And the fries have just a little seasoning on them, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. PERFECT! Definitely going back there again and again!
Great food pricey but good $57 all together
I always enjoy trying new places to eat. This was surprisingly very good. My fish and chips were very tasty, and crunchy like I like it. We placed our order, but then, I forgot to order the onion rings. Took too long to get up to the one cashier, so I decided I didn’t need it that bad. Especially after I saw the price for them. Great food, but on the pricey sides! The wait was kind of long for our order to be done. Not sure if we’ll go back?
It's an old place, for sure. No bells and whistles. The 3 of us spent about $70 together. The meals about about $20 each, not including drink. We had to wait about 30 minutes for our food, which she did tell us about. It was worth it, I'd probably take our next time though.
The food was good but not worth the 1hr wait, it was a pretty long wait....they run out of fish too quick....they definitely know how busy they are, they should be more ready/prepared. Hard when you come from far with hungry kids. Was our first time. Again food is good but not sure we'll be back due to the long wait and running out of fish, sorry😔
I tried Chef John’s Fish & Chips and the food itself was pretty solid, crispy, flavorful, and definitely hit the spot. The only thing that stood out on the downside was the price. For what you get, it felt a bit on the expensive side, which takes away from the overall value. Still, if you’re craving good fish and chips and don’t mind paying a little extra, it’s worth checking out.
Fish was pretty good. Tasted fresh and was freshly prepared. The tarter sauce was a little sweeter than I prefer but that is a me thing. The fish pieces were big one piece was more then enough. The onion rings are good made with the same or very similar batter to the fish. The restaurant itself is on the older side, felt like it was from a different time. Bathroom floors were a little grimy but I think it may be an age of the building kind of thing. Toilet and sink were clean. Music selection brought back some nostalgia, late 90's early 2000 Christian soft rock, felt like I was back at bible camp. I would eat here again if I was in Lemon Grove but I would not go out of my way for another visit. We split a 2 fish plate and asked for onion rings instead of French fries and both got the smaller drinks it was about 15 per person.
Due to Covid-19, this is strictly a To Go restaurant with no out door seating. Since this was our first visit to this Korean Mom & Pop restaurant, we ordered the somewhat pricey Seafood Sampler Platter of fish, scallops, shrimp, clams, and fries. The scallops and fish were our favorites. Both were a fair size and the tastes were very good. The shrimp were good, but the clams and fries were unremarkable. They accept credit cards, but not American Express.
$25.99 for 2 fried fish & fried onion rings and $25.99 for 8 fried shrimps & fried zucchini, wait time was 40-45 minutes. I think it's overly priced. (Prices need to be updated, I almost walked out when I saw their prices! Ridiculous!) There's no nutritional information for any of their food. I would love to know how many calories I ate. We tried it, no need to try it again.
Counter service made-to-order fried seafood. The fish fillets are huge. One is probably enough for a meal. The fish is flaky and fried to perfection, making it crispy, light and not greasy. The fries are good. There is an assortment of dipping sauces in addition to tartar sauce. They also have different kinds of fried veggies. Staff is friendly. The wait was a bit longer than expected but not bad. The ambience is very casual, fast food ish, but it's clean and bright. If you're looking for a kick back spot to satisfy your fish-n-chips craving, this place will do.
Don't know what I was thinking but ordered the fish and chicken combo for $35. Fish was amazing but literally only a 10oz portion of whitefish. The chicken was from a frozen bag and tasted like cardboard. Again $35. The fish is the only thing worth the trip to LG and seriously the Harp OB $22 fish and chips shows who's doing it right!
Very disappointed! Oredered a family meal to go but had other errands to run so I figured we’ll let me at least eat my fish fresh and crispy so I don’t eat it until I get home and it’s soggy. Well don’t!! You are not allowed! It is their policy that if you order to go well, YOU GO! I was definitely shocked and it’s unfortunate because I have nerves! Been anywhere where that is policy. Things change and I figured what’s wrong right? Well it’s wrong period because that is their policy order to go so go! I don’t see it on their menu so if that is how you run your business make sure you emphasize that. Should always make sure to mention that when people order to go over the phone, I have been going to this place ever since they opened. Unfortunate to say never again.
