Historic restaurant. Great for pre/post theatre. Real classic vibe. Great menu. The monkfish curry was on point! And the roasted lobster was amazing. The staff were incredible - really attentive, kind and helpful. Great place.
I've enjoyed quite a few excellent meals in my life. Probably not enough but more than a few. Having just enjoyed an excellent lunch at J Sheekey I now have a new entrant in the top ten. Maybe not number one but really all of my dining experiences at this level were fantastic. For starters the atmosphere at J Sheekey has that nice balance of being a bit special but also welcoming and friendly. The staff played a huge part in this and without exception they were all helpful, accommodating and on hand at all times. It took quite a while to pick our dishes, because the whole menu is uniformly attractive, but it was worth the wait. My starter scallops were large, juicy and perfectly cooked. Then came the Cornish fish stew which featured generous cuts of fish and just the right quantity of shellfish. Finally I went for the apple pie, because I'm an optimist, and the result was most excellent. Now lunchtime drinking is always hazardous but we went for the recommended Chablis and it was a fine choice. Robust and rich it paired nicely with all of our dishes. Really that's a good description for our whole dining experience and rarely have 2.5 hours passed so pleasingly.
J Sheekey was a wonderful surprise for a fine seafood dinner during our trip to London. The wine sommelier was very knowledgeable, helpful, and enjoyable to visit with.
Wow, what can I say, an incredible all round meal. I can’t remember the last time I had a meal where all three courses were as good as the ones I had at J. Sheekey. The staff were incredibly attentive and even brought out a ‘Happy birthday’ dessert for my partner which he loved. For starters we had the dressed Portland crab and the cheddar soufflé, the soufflé was so light and fluffy with just the right amount of cheese. I then ordered the monkfish and tiger prawn masala, and wow, it was great. The monkfish itself was so soft and the prawns really let out a chargrill flavour. My partner ordered the ray wing which he thoroughly enjoyed. Finally, the desserts, my partner ordered the honeycomb ice cream with hot chocolate sauce and he won’t stop talking about it! Something so simple, but so great, a generous portion too. I had the raspberry and pistachio cake which was so light, and fluffy, and the sharpness of the raspberries really complimented the pistachio cake. Overall, an incredible meal, with great staff in a great location. I’ll be coming back.
2024 Felt the need to update this old review as I had yet another fantastic experience here. Had a wonderful weeknight dinner with friends. We had multiple serious allergies at our table and were impressed that the restaurant took them seriously. The manager came to take our order personally and she knew the entire menu inside out and was able to advise on suitable dishes. The seafood was exceeding fresh and expertly prepared and we all enjoyed every bite. The portions were very generous and good value for money. Service was excellent and quick even though it was very busy with pre-theatre diners. 2020 Fresh and skilfully prepared seafood. Was taken here for a Sunday brunch on my birthday. I was very impressed. Service was really good too.
Great atmosphere, solid food, great service from the staff. Lots of famous people in the restaurant and very warm feeling overall. Food was good especially the lobster thermidor! Will return
A great choice for a 4pm glass of the best English Sparkling wine and oysters. The service and the way you were looked after was superb. Great atmosphere and great location
My recent visit to J Sheekey in London was nothing short of exceptional. Nestled in a narrow street that evoked a sense of old London, the atmosphere felt as though I had stepped back in time to a historic era. The surrounding pedestrian traffic was dense, adding to the lively and classic London charm, while inside, the ambiance was calm and inviting. From the moment I sat down, the service was fantastic. A young waiter, in particular, stood out. His attention to detail was impeccable; he anticipated everything we needed, and we never had to call him over – he was always ready and present. This level of care and professionalism greatly enhanced our experience. We indulged in the best fruits de mer I’ve had since Paris. The quality of the seafood was incredibly high, making for an unforgettable meal. Every bite reflected the freshness and careful preparation of the ingredients. J Sheekey has certainly set the bar for excellence in seafood. On top of the outstanding food and service, there was also a sense of warm hospitality that made the evening feel special. The entire experience at J Sheekey was a perfect blend of tradition, high-quality cuisine, and attentive service. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a true taste of classic London dining.
All round excellent. Went pretty all out on the food as it was a celebratory meal but could have been cheaper if selected differently. It's expensive but for a premium fish and seafood experience in classic ambience with great service it's worth it. The cheesecake to share for dessert and banana Carre cocktail really impressed. Service warm and efficient.
This place was awesome. The chili jalapeño prawns were yummy. Also the cheese soufflé was the dish of the night ! The picture doesn’t do it justice - delicate with an amazing cheese sauce Loved the fish and chips - specifically the mushy peas were better than most places. The fish pie is creamy and comforting The basque cheesecake with cherry was perfect !
This was our first time at J Sheekey and we came here for our wedding anniversary lunch. The interior decoration is very modern and the atmosphere very nice. The service and staff were really nice as well. We shared a lovely seafood bisque and the mushroom risotto was very creamy and delicious. We shared a cold and hot seafood platter. Both were good and very filling. Highly recommend.
Fantastic selection of foods from the sea, but don’t miss the exceptional starters. The Dover Sole was better than the bass and cooked with a butter crème sauce that brought it to life. Have fun with this spot!
I had an amazing experience at this restaurant! The food was simply outstanding, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, which made the whole experience even better. The restaurant's decor is designed to look like a train, and it's simply beautiful inside. The oysters were some of the best I've ever had, and the seafood platter was absolutely delicious. The desserts were also amazing - not only did they look beautiful, but they tasted incredible. As a seafood lover, I highly recommend this restaurant. We went there to celebrate Father's Day, and it was the perfect choice. While the prices are on the expensive side, it's definitely worth it for the quality of food and service you receive. I would definitely go back again in the future!
Been on the list for years. It did not disappoint. Absolutely superb meal. And excellent value for a set 3 course meal with a free bottle of rose (which was also fab). Defo get to this place!
Wonderful food and superb service. One of the best dining experiences of my life! We were treated beautifully.
Another restaurant I had to give a terrible time crunch to on this trip and they handled it expertly. Our flight got moved up (my fault) but I had always planned to go here on my trip to London so we got in at doors and literally had only an hour before we had to run to the airport. They helped watch our luggage and got us in and out quickly, which was a shame because it’s a wonderful place. I knew we needed two things, The fish and chips and the fish pie as I had heard great things about both. I am pleased to say they both lived up To the hype. The Fish Pie I have to state was one of the best dishes I had on my entire trip to London, perfect crust, creamy mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked pieces of multiple! types of fish, I think 4! The fish and chips were perfectly flakey and crispy as well. I would have loved to have more items but sadly it was not the time, but I’m sure I will return on my next trip and ensure better planning on my end 😂
J Sheekey was great! The portions are huge and absolutely worth it. We ordered both the cold and hot seafood platters, and they were delicious—super fresh and beautifully done. We sat at the counter bar, which was a fun spot to watch everything happening. Our server was excellent and stayed professional and attentive, even though it looked like there might have been some behind-the-scenes staff drama. Overall, a really good experience. I’d definitely come back—especially for seafood that fresh! 🦞✨
My absolute favourite restaurant in London! 🌟I am big fan of the seafood so this restaurant is the best! Whether I want to go for dinner with someone or simply treat myself, this is always my first choice. I love walking in, sitting down, and enjoying my favourite oysters (J Sheekey style!). I’m also obsessed with their main dishes the salmon, cod, and scallops are fantastic. Honestly, every dish is exceptional, and their seafood platter is unbelievably good! 🦀 I’m also in love with the atmosphere and the staff. It’s the perfect place to visit when I want to unwind and enjoy truly delicious food. At the desk there’s Raya (or Riya), who is always incredibly welcoming and positive 🧡 In general, the whole team is wonderfully friendly and experienced 🌟 Overall, this is my favourite spot in London perfect both for a dinner with friends and for those moments when I just want to relax and enjoy excellent dishes 👌 P.S. Counter seating is almost always available without a booking, but if you prefer a table, keep in mind that you’ll need to book in advance
Excellent ‘old school’ restaurant, with a justified reputation for seafood. We went for my son’s birthday and were seated in a really nice booth by the window. There is also seating at the bar which creates a nice atmosphere. The food was very good. I had Halibut (fish of the day) and it was cooked beautifully. My son had the Shellfish platter and really enjoyed it. It’s not the cheapest place but certainly worth a visit !
We went just before Christmas 25 ,the oysters, lobster and plaice were all fresh and beautifully cooked. The service was top class smiling faces, no empty glasses. The tables are cozy and the atmosphere marvelous. The wine was lovely , also the lovely people who sat beside us. All in all the best experience.
Outstanding food. Sophisticated, cozy and comfortable restaurant with friendly staff. I've eaten here several times over the last 7 years and I have never been dissapointed with the food or the service. My first and only negative is the outside area, it used to be open so there was an air flow, there were heaters and blankets, a smoking option, I used to love sitting here, more recently this outside area has been closed in with plastic which I personally find tacky. Putting the outside area to one side... I highly recommend this restaurant 👌
J Sheekey is one of our favourite London restaurants and a wonderful spot for dinner. We enjoyed the Tempura prawns, fish stew and fish pie. The ambience, service and food was outstanding and we will return soon.
We went for a celebratory meal after getting many recommendations as the best fish restaurant in town and it didn’t disappoint. A beautiful setting in old worldly London, with amazing seafood & fish. Samrita was our very attentive waitress & Katarina on reception made sure we got a great table and service
keep coming whenever we want a bite of seafood since 2014. oysters and shellfish are fat and tasty. nice staff and wonderful service
Great oysters and slip soles. Regulation dry martini served first. Good selection of wines.
Amazing atmosphere with beautiful classic décor. The food is excellent but definitely on the pricey side. Great spot for special occasions.
Love their fish and chips. Went there before the theatre show. Thin batter and tender fillet. Worth a visit!
Amazing service and the staff are being very accommodative and considerate - they advised us to order 3 people instead of 6 people for the seafood platter. Very honest and excellent advice. The seafood from crab to whelk and oysters are so fresh and delicious. Very impressive.
A delightful pre-theatre indulgence that struck all the right notes. The seafood stew was rich and satisfying, but it was the desserts that truly stole the show — both light, summery, and meringue-based, offering a perfect balance of texture and sweetness. Elegant, refreshing, and utterly moreish. Despite the early evening bustle, the service remained flawless — polished, attentive, and wonderfully unhurried. A thoroughly enjoyable experience, and one I’d be pleased to repeat!
One of my favourite places for sure in London. Food and service is just stunning. Reception team, thank you so much Gulshan and Ria for welcoming us.
all dishes excellent! freshness of oyster was also excellent. all server are very kind. especially server Richard always took care of us well and super kind. we can use here every ocasion like business ,friends, familiy etc.
From the moment you walk in till the moment you leave you are treated like nothing but the best. The sea food is simply some of the best you are going to get, you nearly the hear the sea from London. Highly recommend.
We celebrated my mum’s birthday at J Sheekey, and it was a truly memorable evening. The ambiance is timeless — elegant and full of character, reflecting the restaurant’s 130+ years of tradition. It feels like stepping into a piece of London’s culinary history. We started with a fantastic selection of seafood: rich and flavourful shellfish bisque, fresh oysters, beautifully presented Portland crab, and a delicate yellowfin tuna tartare. For mains, the famous fish pie lived up to its reputation — hearty and comforting. The monkfish and prawn curry with rice was fragrant and well-balanced, and the Dover sole was perfectly cooked. The roasted lobster was the only slight let-down, being a bit on the dry side, but still enjoyable. To finish, we shared pavlova, chocolate truffles, and a selection of refreshing sorbets — all beautifully presented and a lovely end to the meal. Service was attentive and warm, and the overall atmosphere made it a perfect setting for a special occasion. A great experience overall — highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy a classic British seafood dinner in the heart of London.
We came here for my husband's birthday dinner. I loved the atmosphere of the restaurant, interior design, all the portraits of actors and old ambiance of the place. I loved the welcome of the staff and how they asked us immediately if we are going to a show after the dinner( we were going to a show afterwards). We loved our waiter, he made our evening enjoyable and made us smile countless times. Everything we ate was delicious. I had the fish of the day, it was halibut, it was so good!!! The sauce, the puree, the cook of the fish, how it was moist and delicious... such a good dish. My husband had fish stew and we had burrata and shrimps for starters. My husband had the peach melba mille feuille and they brought us salted caramel truffle balls. Please whatever you do, you must try these truffles with coffee. They were so good together. Perfect ending to a perfect dinner at a perfect, classic, west end restaurant😍 recommend, recommend, recommend. ( for the restaurant: if you can thank our waiter for us again, we would be grateful, reservation was under my name, Dogan)
Our lunch here was exquisite. A place to go if you’re feeling a bit flush and want a real treat. The variety of choices on the menu meant we took a while to decide! We sat at the bar, the atmosphere seemed slightly livelier elsewhere (hence not 5 stars here). Would definitely recommend. Great location, too.
The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a perfect mix of comfort and style. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome the moment we walked in. The food was the real standout every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. Highly recommended and will be coming back!
Absolutely outstanding from start to finish! From the moment we walked through the door me and my wife were greeted warmly and felt instantly at ease in the elegant, yet relaxed atmosphere. The décor strikes the perfect balance between classic seafood‐charm and modern comfort. We began with the fish soup which arrived perfectly hot, rich in flavour and beautifully seasoned. Followed by the turbot special, cooked to perfection and served with crisp, vibrant vegetables—each bite a revelation. The staff were incredibly attentive without being overbearing, offering expert recommendations and always checking in on us. What really stood out was their commitment to freshness and quality: you could tell the fish had a story, and the accompanying sides and sauces were every bit as thoughtful as the main dish. The dessert of warm pudding with a hint of citrus set the sweet finish. All in all, it was an unforgettable evening: impeccable service, superb food and a real sense of occasion. We will absolutely be returning!! Five stars — 10/10
J Sheekey is simply exceptional. From the moment you walk in the atmosphere feels effortlessly classic and welcoming. Proper London dining at its best. The seafood is outstanding. Impeccably fresh perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The service really elevates the experience. Attentive knowledgeable and warm without ever feeling overbearing. The staff clearly take pride in what they do and are happy to guide you through the menu and wine pairings. Whether it is a special occasion or simply a love of great seafood J Sheekey delivers every time. Consistently high standards timeless elegance and food that genuinely impresses. One of London’s true dining institutions and highly recommended.
From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel genuinely welcome. The greeting team was warm, friendly, and attentive, setting the tone for a great experience. A special mention goes to the lady in the pink suit, she stood out with her bright, welcoming energy and made us feel instantly at ease. Every member of staff we interacted with was kind, professional, and truly looked after us throughout our visit. Nothing felt rushed, and they went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and enjoying ourselves. That level of care made a big difference and really stood out. We left feeling valued as guests and would happily return.
Last night (21/01/2026) I had the pleasure of dining at J Sheekey and was thoroughly impressed. The food was exceptional and the service was outstanding. Chris, our server was brilliant and made sure we were well looked after! From the warm welcome at reception to being escorted to our table by the most beautiful and charming hostess, everything was top-notch. The atmosphere was lively and inviting, and the food service was absolutely brilliant. I have been many times, and it is clear that J Sheekey is a restaurant that consistently delivers on both food and service. I cannot recommend it enough! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I will be back soon.
Nice place. Well greeted. Service very good. Starter (cheese souffle) very good. Main (salmon) very raw in the middle ( I know its cooked like this and most people probably like it like that) I prefer mine to be cooked through. But all in all very good and recommended. Wine selection excellent.. all rather pricey (total bill 850 for 6 people) but its in London and its a nice place
Another terrific meal in this charming art-deco-ish restaurant. They brought the wrong wine, I glanced at it, said Yes, then noticed while taking a photograph, after the bottle was opened, that it was not what I had ordered. Some restaurants might have quibbled at this point - not Sheekey. Replaced graciously without fuss or cost. That's how to win and retain customers for life. Plus the always deliciously reliable food of course. It's expensive, but actually, not that expensive considering the quality, style, location and pitch perfect old world service. Bravo.
Went there for a birthday party over the weekend. I was not impressed with the service as this place was considered as a 5 star-typed restaurant. Food: The choices are good with different options. Service: bad. The waitress serving us was looking like she doesn't understand our order and we have to keep repeating our order a few times. On the drinks side, we've put in our order once we were seated as we know what we want to drink. However 15 minutes later, there were still no drinks on sight. We've to ask about where are our drinks. Another point was the seating, the table that we're placed was small, cramp and in a traffic flow area were waiters snd waitresses walk passed you ALL THE TIME! While we saw a couple was place in a corner with a bigger table where more people can sit around. Not very clever in their seating plan. We've made reservation in advance, surely you would have thought the restaurant would have a better seating plan. Atmosphere: it was spolit by the cramped seating table, with lots of waitering traffic flow around our table.
It was my second time visit J Sheekey seafood restaurant in Covent Garden. It seems like they would serve quicker for those pre-theater guests. We were waited for sometime. Underwhelmed by the food which was pricy. ▪︎Pumpkin risotto was good ▪︎Crab burger was okay ▪︎Fish curry was ordinary ▪︎Mixed Oysters can be better ▪︎Parmesan fried Courgette was good ▪︎Roasted Chorizo was good ▪︎Atlantic Prawns not worth to try Service was pleasant, friendly staff . Total bill : £192.
Food is five stars, but service was a letdown. We ordered the fish and chips, a seafood stew/bisque, tempura shrimp, salmon tartar, and oysters. All were very good, especially the fry on the fish. Perfectly crispy while being moist and flaky inside. Service however was a big miss. Multiple times we’d had to remind our server, even for things like water. An otherwise very nice restaurant to dine.
I really enjoyed the food here! Husband LOVED his 3 courses - galician octopus, lobster and honeycomb ice cream. I could not stop yapping about just how good the bisque was. The fish pie was pretty tasty but not mindblowing, but the green apple and basil sorbet was off the chain good! I would go back and order like 10 scoops! Best sorbet ever I need a recipe! A little bit busy but still nice and tranquil and GREAT service!
Food wise overall was not bad, the mixed grill seafood platter was the best we had. Appetizers are just so so. Service wise was acceptable neither friendly nor helpful, but quite efficient as most of the restaurant guests have a show to catch. Price wise is quite tourist priced.
Very nice restaurant, but not cheap. Appreciate paying for quality and location but felt VERY rushed. Literally 1 minute between starters being cleared and main course arriving. Then hovering to clear main plates. At these prices one expects to at least have time to digest one's food. Also a 13.5% service charge is added automatically. Why? If they were confident in service levels they would trust the customer. They clearly aren't, and I understand why. Food very very good.
Nice atmosphere and recommend for a special occasion. The ambience is formal so recommendation tip wear clean and fancy clothes. Service was good. Check the bill at the end there’s a tip charged previously included of about 13% of the final amount so considerate it if you go with limited budget. Lobster was a great choice, well cooked and really tasty.
Terrible service. Had a seafood platter for 2 put in front of us, and after a few minutes taken away and replaced with one for 1 for my partner. On top of the lack of professionalism, this was given to another table which makes me question the food safety of this restaurant. To make matters worse, my partner was still hungry after a £60 platter which arrived cold and didn’t taste fresh. For the cost, I expected a high-quality meal if the portion wasn’t large. In this case, it was cold, the portions were small, and it didn’t taste fresh. Poor coordination between servers (was asked if I was ready to order 3x by 3 different servers) and some were rude and made faces at us. Really disappointed: my partner and I felt disrespected and we will not be returning. This is the first time I had to make a restaurant complaint. The desserts that we requested had also ran out. By far one of the most disappointing “high rated” restaurants I’ve been to. Complete contrast to the restaurant I went to for lunch earlier in Valentine’s Day. UPDATE: Manager was really professional and understanding and provided a remedy. Couldn’t be happier, we wish everyone had the same professionalism and service quality as him. We strongly recommend that the restaurant improve server coordination and food safety handling.
