We came here for roll with friends and everything was absolutely delicious. The staff took great care of us, answered all our questions patiently, and even surprised us with a complimentary dessert 😅 The service was warm and attentive. We had a wonderful experience and will definitely come back!

Although it doesn’t look fancy on the outside, this restaurant was such a lucky find for me and my family. Not only was there service incredibly fast, but the quality of their food blew me away too. My family loved their sushi and teriyaki sticks, saying that the meat was very tender. I’m vegetarian and their fake beef still makes my mouth water as I type this review. The servers were also very courteous and gave us complimentary ice cream at the end. Will definitely be back!

Sushi is legit! Staff is super friendly and attentive. I forgot the name of the roll I ordered but it’s the picture below. It was really tasty. The tempura veggies were delicious too. No boats though, but that doesn't matter to me. I didn't come for the boats. I don't eat boats- I eat sushi.

I really enjoyed Sumo sushi. Very fresh and tasty fish, complimentary appetizer and dessert, and the sushi boats! What could be better? Agedashi tofu was tender and flavorful, hamachi avocado - refreshing, and the rolls and the nigiri just right. I shall be back!

This place is like heaven! One of the only sushi I prefer in the whole bag area. The service is amazing. I enjoy everything about this place from the second we walk in we’re filled with pleasant greetings and great energy. The food is superb, the atmosphere is brilliant, I even love the music they play here! This restaurant comes highly recommended!!!

Clean facility, fast service and TASTY sushi 🍣!!! I stopped there for a lunch without exceptions. I had a rainbow roll and new york roll. Both were amazing. Lunch combo is served with hot miso soup and green salad. They also offer complimentary tea. I’ll be back for sure.

Good sushi and the man who helped us (I am assuming the owner) was very friendly. They don't always have the sushi on the boats in the early afternoon, but this was fun to see. I would recommend going here.

I've been coming here for years and this restaurant still serves up a great combination of food, ambience and friendliness in Los Altos. A great family sushi restaurant that is a favorite amongst locals. The rotating sushi boat always has a good range of choices while the a la carte menu will satisfy most who seek an alternative to sushi fare, such as Udon soup or Teriyaki. John and his team keep our family coming back time and again with their warm hospitality.

I like this place a lot since there's not many people, so no waiting line at most times, and the food is fair enough. It's not a great great sushi restaurant, but the atmosphere itself makes the price worthy !

My new favorite sushi place. Staff is friendly, the atmosphere is fun, but most importantly the food is fantastic. I've been here twice now, once doing the sushi boats thing with a gaggle of kids, and once at a table on a date. Both were wonderful times. I highly recommend this place.

This has become my go-to Sushi place in Los Altos. The owners are on point with their Sushi and do an amazing job of making custom rolls and dishes as well. While I haven't had the pleasure to dine inside yet since discovering this place early in 2020, I've been consistently ordering take out or eating outside where they have a couple of tables on the street. I'd consider this place better than most of the other sushi places in the area consistent in freshness, flavor, and service.

P
Petra Zalar

Love it. The atmosphere is vibrant, and the staff is incredibly welcoming. It's a fantastic place for families looking for a great dining experience without breaking the bank. Can't wait to come back!

Great food, FANTASTIC service I have never been in a restaurant more hospitable and friendly than Sumo Sushi Boat. The boat bar is top notch and the available items change all the time so you don't get tired of coming back! It's priced very fairly and the rolls are delicious. Classical chefs would sneer at the unconventional sushi rolls available here, like the ribeye roll and avocado with candied walnuts, but I am excited about new combinations. It will take a few visits before you even think about being bored of their menu (and also, there are items on the sushi boats not listed in the menu!)

S
Sally Ivester

My boyfriend and I come here all the time and know the owner by name! They always greet us when we come in, and know exactly what we want :) We always sit at the sushi bar and it's a great place. They give you free tea, free ice cream at the end, and they also give you hot hand towels when you walk in! Great sushi, affordable prices, and great people. Fast service as well!

T
Tejan Timblo

Great rolls selection and the conveyor sushi items are always interesting just for you to keep staring before picking on something that tickles your fancy. If not you can place an a la carte order with the chef. Wonderful family owned business that’s family friendly and it’s often frequent by patrons of all ages. A+

A

We are regulars here. We've been coming since the kids were little and now they are teens. It's family run and they treat you like friends whenever you come in. We love all the sushi but favorites are the Walnut Prawn, the Johnny's Special, Sumo California roll, and about 7-9 Gyozi plates for my oldest son. A little on the pricier side, but we always come back. Just not as often as we might because of price. Not out of the realm of reasonableness for price.

M
Max Morawski

Great sushi! My go-to place. Once when ordering online, I wrote in a note that my partner was having a bad and asked them to let me buy a side of miso soup even thought it wasn't on their menu. They sent me four containers of it for free. It made both our days, and I've remembered that ever since :)

I have to preface this review that the food isn't to my particular tastes, but that said, the amount you get, the quality and the excellent service make this a great place. My kids really appreciate that they can get steamed gyoza instead of fried. They have a lot of sushi options on the boats, even at lunch.

We came here and were immediately greeted and treated very nicely. The train with sushi was a nice gimmick, very fun and creative. The food was really nice! Overall a really fun dining experience.

We had three very different rolls, and each was five stars: slightly crunchy on the outside, and many surprising, tasty flavors and textures on the inside. My favorite had a little fresh mango. The hot house saki was above average: great on a cold night. And the decor was warm and welcoming. The seats around the Sushi island aren’t cramped at all, plenty of space, and still close enough to neighbors to have a conversation. No loud music to talk over. Lighting just right: not too bright, not to dark. Five stars all around!

We’ve been going here for years, and they recently brought back the sushi train. It was a such a great experience coming back here. The atmosphere was great with nice music and vibe. We recommend the seafood salad and we loved the friend wonton crisps at the beginning of the meal.

P

We are visiting in California from Switzerland and we come here three or four times a year for the last 20 years. This place is absolutely fantastic and used to have a boat but now for hygiene reasons has an actual train running around with sushi. This is a phenomenal experience for folks who like sushi and/or Trains. The food was great. The service is awesome and the atmosphere is fantastic because it’s a small family owned restaurant. You really should go here if you’re in Los Altos, and particularly if you like red bean paste mochi. And bonus points for this place for the longest time having said Irasshaimasei in Japanese for all entering customers. I love this place.

Our new favorite sushi restaurant! As people who try a lot of sushi restaurants, we were blown away by our experience at Sumo. We ordered many items, but there were two standouts that were truly unique and unlike anything I’ve had anywhere else: • Agedashi Tofu: The texture was incredible—perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining silky and light on the inside. It’s a must-order! • Tropical Mango Roll: This was a total showstopper. The combination of fresh mango with the savory elements of the roll (maguro and sake) was so refreshing and creative. It’s a flavor profile I haven’t found at other spots in the area. Beyond the food, the hospitality and service were so kind and welcoming. You can tell they really care about their guests. The ambience is also fantastic—it has such a vibrant, high-end feel that makes for an incredible dining experience. If you’re in Los Altos, don't miss this gem. We will definitely be back!

Our family has been to Sumo many times because it's a family favorite. Our kids love the kids meals (rice, miso soup, and salmon or chicken teriyaki) and the sushi train, where we usually pick a few rolls and mochi for dessert. We love the variety of the menu and freshness of the food most of the time. Depending on the day, the texture of the rice can be improved and sometimes the offerings on the sushi train are limited, but the excellent service more than makes up for it. The restaurant is full of regulars that the staff remembers. A few favorites from the menu include the tempura ramen, all of the rolls, the agedashi tofu and the mochi ice cream. Highly recommended as a family friendly establishment that serves above average food, a quiet and fun ambiance, and great service.

My husband and I dined at the Sumo Japanese Restaurant in downtown Los Altos on a Thursday evening. It was the perfect way to wait for a tow truck to arrive due to my car’s flat tire! We ate indoors but there are a few outdoor tables. Spacious yet cozy we ate near the window as the hostess promptly served us tea. I ordered the Unagi Donburi (broiled eel with sauce, rice on the bottom and two slices of Takuan (pickled yellow radish) served in a traditional lacquered Unaju box & lid. The unagi was a bit mushy for my taste. My husband ordered a sashimi plate that was presented in a lovely glass bowl filled with ice. He said the sashimi was very fresh and delicate in flavor. Downtown Los Altos has many restaurants to choose from and it was pleasant to be greeted with hot green tea and smiles.

Good selection of items on sushi boats, friendly, helpful and fast service. The food was good, we combined some sushi from the boats with a few items from the menu. We were there for dinner and they included complimentary scoop of Icecream. Overall good dinner experience!

This place has been in Los Altos for a long time. I was there for late lunch and the boat is already closed. However, I can still order any sushi. I opt for a single item bento which include miso soup and salad. It's good for the price. Very friendly staffs and people walking in seems to be the usual. They all greet each other by name. Definitely has a bunch of usuals. Food quality is ok relative ti the price. You can get better sushi but it is also more expensive at other places.

S

We went to this place because online it said they still had the sushi boats apparently they don't and they haven't had them for quite some time we still ate there but it was a very expensive 120 bucks for two people

S

It was Ok. Thin slices of fish on th sushi. Not a big selection on th boats, but u can order off th menu. I ordered th eel don, which didn't hv too much teriyaki sauce (a good thing) n a good size piece of eel but not enough rice (for me, at least).

W
Waleed Kadous

Cool sushi boat type place with helpful staff. There are three issues though: 1. It's expensive. Easy for it to go to $40 per person. For example $20 for one Lion King roll. 2. Not a lot of variety on the sushi boat. 3. Stuff stays on the sushi boat for a very long time and occasionally you'll get one item that doesn't taste so fresh. On the other hand, free ice cream for dessert!

A

As it turns out, I end up eating here once a year during Lent. Each time, it is a pleasant experience. The fish is fresh, the saba shioyaki is well cooked, and the staff is friendly. I find myself here for lunch, being in the area in mid-day. I couldn't say what it's like during the dinner rush. But the food was good and the staff was friendly when I was there. Thanks!

My kids love sushi boats, so this place hit the mark . It's on the pricey side, so we only go on special occasions. Very kid friendly though, as they also give you free ice cream scoops for dessert.

I honestly did like the sushi train experience, it was very cute and all the families with kids loved it. But we had an allergen experience that really soured the dinner. If you have nut allergies be careful of the sushi train!! They don’t mark or label anything that has nuts in it, or have any warning signs that their sushi may contain nuts. Our server didn’t ask about allergens, nor did we think a sushi place would be where we’d worry about nuts in the rolls. My husband is allergic to nuts, and picked a plate that looked very similar to their caterpillar roll with avocado on top and eel in the middle. As soon as he bit into it he had a feeling so he immediately spit it out. When we brought this up to our server, he admonished my husband for not knowing better. He said “it’s clearly listed in the menu that we have walnut shrimp rolls and didn’t you feel it crunch when you bit into it?” We get that it’s on the menu, hence why we didn’t order it. But none of the train plates are labeled nor is there a sign that says to look out for rolls on the train that may contain nuts. Beyond that, they comped the walnut train plate (the one my husband bit and spit out) and offered to pay for Benadryl from the Costco. For us, this could’ve landed us in the hospital since no allergens are labeled or warned about. And the response from staff shows that they are not allergen conscious. So unfortunately, we won’t be coming back.

My veggie udon was a bit bland compared to others I've tried, there was just nothing impressive for the $12 plus tax and tip price. Service was friendly, but they must have been understaffed for the holiday rush because we waited a long time. It was ok.

Bland food for high prices. The selection is good, but you get to pick slightly above average food for substantial prices. It's not terrible per se, but nothing to write home about. You can find a better deal for the same price range elsewhere.

The sushi available on train was not very fresh and comparatively expensive, but of course kids love snatching plates from fast moving train. The custom ordered sushi from the menu was much better and well plated.

Ended up stopping over here while I was walking in downtown. I didnt know that sushi boats are still a thing. Always had a doubt when it came to the freshness but still braved my way inside. I ended up ordering the dragon roll, but unfortunately the prawn tempura in the roll was not fresh... quite the opposite as it was chewy and soggy. Would not be going again .

Foods are too salty overall. The meat in Katsu Don was tough even though it's pork. The beef ramen was like an udon with ramen noodle. Only rolls were just okay. Sub-par experience considering the price range.

I ordered Chirashi Don, and the fish was small and thinly sliced. Very disappointing. It's not worth the $33.99 price.

Honestly don’t know how this place got current ratings. I ordered takoyaki, tempura udon and Katsu donburi. Takoyaki portion is small but it was okay. Donburi was ridiculous. Katsu was hard, rice was dry. Sauce was too sweet. Seems like they are using frozen stuffs. Udon same thing just market selling udon base with hot water I guess and undercooked noodle? Tempura is below average as well. Paper Thin sliced ingredient. Shrimp is almost pasta thin. I don’t think they know what the dish should be like or don’t care bc of the main customers are white who has no idea about Japanese cuisine. Staffs are friendly tho.

I don't know what's going on with this place. The sign on the outside and the printed menus say "Tonoshi Sushi" and the only reference to Sumo Sushi is a sign in the front to "pick up Sumo Sushi takout orders in the back." (P.S. The actual Sushi Boat is gone - sorry, folks.) Everything here for in-person dining is now a la carte. No bento box, no combinations outside of the chef's sushi platters. For the price of a fully loaded chicken teri bento elsewhere, here you just get the chicken teri, and not very much at that. I tried the Chicken Karaage, and when it came the chicken was barely warm but had been fried to well done chewiness. The mustard sauce that came with it was basically Thousand Island dressing with some mustard powder. We did our best to share and split plates, but each couple in our group spent $100 for the evening. Ouch.

I used to be a regular here, but this was my first visit in many years. (And probably my last). It started with odd service. We were seated and a waitress immediately asked if we were ready to order. We requested a few minutes. As she left, a waiter came to the table and asked to take our order. We told him we needed a few minutes but we did ask him for edamame. He then asked us if we wanted water (which was an odd question because we already had water on the table in front of us.). A few minutes later, we ordered our food. By now, 5 or 10 minutes had passed and still no edamame. I asked our waiter about the edamame. He repeated my request, but couldn’t pronounce the word edamame??? That was odd. He then said there was a mistake, but it will be out soon. It finally came out about the same time as our meals (delivered by a third and fourth person to come to our table. The soy sauce on the table was the low-sodium version (with the green lid). I asked if he could bring us the regular soy sauce (with the red lid). Again, he looked thoroughly confused. Next, a fifth person came to our table and asked us about the soy sauce we were requested. We repeated our request and she seemed confused too. She said she’ll see what she can do. Five minutes later she came to our table with a bottle of regular soy sauce (clearly from the restaurant kitchen). The bottle was covered with fingerprints (probably used for prepping food in the kitchen). It was also cold, right out of the refrigerator. Anyway, we started eating. . . The food was ok (at best) but the wasabi had absolutely no taste. It was odd. It was just a green flavorless paste. Then, while we were still eating, a sixth person started bussing the table and we had to stop him from taking food that we were still eating. Overall it was a lousy experience and certainly not worth going through again. Disappointed.

For the price we paid for the food, the quality and the taste were quite bad. We ordered bunch of appetizers and some sushi rolls, and was surprised to find out that all the dishes were sub par. The grilled short rib came out cold and tasteless. The Ebi tempura had the thickest crumb with the tiniest shrimp. The chicken teriyaki tasted like rubber. The sushi roll was also quite bland. To be fair, the service was great but the food was disappointing.

Ordered a california roll through a doordash today. There was a sharp brown glass chip in the ginger about 0.2" by 0.2". Had to spit it out. Not sure if a smaller piece went in. This is my first time probably the last. Really disappointed. I was not sure if to make my first google review post. But since it is only 1 small chip in my order, others might also find in their ginger if they actually eat the ginger.

This is the WORST sushi I've ever had in my life (and that includes a different place where I got food poisoning). Terrible dry cold rice, mayonaise-soaked crab filling, and bland tasteless fish. I will never go back there.

Un-authentic tourist trap for rich Los Altos denizens who don't know better. Everything my group ordered (a huge izakaya spread) from the 2 specialty sushi rolls, tempura, short ribs, chicken teriyaki, and gyoza were mediocre. The price we paid was barely justified by the tacky decor and non japanese chefs. Save your money and get whole foods sushi.

Rice was cold and looks like plastic. The fish was clearly not fresh and had weird coloring. If you are looking for authentic sushi, this is not the place. Low quality food and sushi was oversauced. They don’t even have boats anymore so no reason to come here.

The rice looked like plastic and the Sushi tasted a week old. Please get fresh fish or don’t serve to people. After eating the sushi, i had a stomach ache and was nauseous for a whole day. I’m just glad i didn’t end up at the hospital.

Absolutely disappointing! I’ve never had worse Japanese food than this….the donburi was so sweet, pork overbooked, udon was just soy sauce water….i wouldn’t know they call this Japanese cuisine…even instant udon is better than this…

Actually, the service and atmosphere are good. But the taste of sushi is not good. I like sushi very much and I have eaten a lot of high-quality sushi. This place is not worth of money. When I eat sushi it’s like plain rice and raw fish. zero tastes.

Was not from the local area. Saw the rating, decided to give it a try, but was later shocked by the food quality. The fish was not fresh, at all. One piece was even a little bitter. Tried to tell the waiter but it seems they didn't care. Later I had a lot of fun reading the reviews, especially the recent ones. Guess I was not the only one who "enjoyed" it.

IF YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT TO YOURSELF READ THIS COMMENT BEFORE GOING THIS PLACE! This was the worst experience in my LIFE. Yes in my LIFE! We did our reservation from google for this restaurant and went there before our reservation. But the host was so pretty boy and he showed us a table. We were 3. Mom who is coming from abroad to visit us, and 6yo daughter and this should have been a happy dinner for us. Then the lady (later we learnt she is boss’s wife) came to our table with her terrible loudly and angry voice, weird body language yelled us that she cleaned that table now and we can’t sit overhere. Everybody looked at us and I shocked and didn’t understand what was she talking about. I tought this was her table and she was a customer too but a problem customer. Then I realised that she is a staff over there! What? Is that the way to tell this to us? Am I your staff? How can you shout to us while I am there with my family especially with a kid? Couldn’t believe what I have heard! Then I called the manager. She yelled I am the manager! She was like crazy, her eyes, hair, manners.. Then boss came to our table and he told that we are right, sorry sorry. While we were talking the lady came again and yelled again like we were her enemies! I believe that if we were outside or if there was noone there she would try to hurt me. She started to talk with her own language. How can I know that what she told? She was passing our tables with the voice like snake tsss and rolling her eyes. She was exactly making a tsss sound like a snake. She showed us with her hands to other customers and talked about who knows what. The boss was apologizing desperately but she was yelling just behind him. She was acting like we were insects. My daughter was so scared because of her behaviors and my mom also shocked! They made me very ashamed towards my family. Then I arrenged other restaurant( Yoshi Sushi) which had better atmosphere. We had our dinner peacefully. If you know what respect is to your own, you shouldn’t go this impolite restaurant.

Way overpriced for not-at-all good quality sushi

Low quality fish/ingredients, eerily dark green wasabi. The fish tasted like it had been sitting out for multiple days. The rice used in the rolls tasted more like steamed rice and not at all like sushi rice. It's easy to tell this place isn't authentic, and my group was the only East Asians who were there despite the restaurant being reasonably packed. This place has rebranded multiple times from Sumo Sushi Boat to Tanoshi Sushi to Sumo Sushi. Not sure why this place is rated so highly. Oh and the owner/waiter signed for me when I paid. That also felt really off.

Very poor quality food while also being extremely overpriced. Only redeeming quality is that they have really friendly service. Unfortunately, like the others, we gave this place a shot based on high overall rating, but should have read recent reviews more closely. The bill came out to be as expensive as a fancy steakhouse while the food came out feeling like it was either microwaved appetizers or they screwed up sushi rice or was using old soggy tempura. I'm not sure how this place is rated so highly (must have been older reviews and maybe it recently changed chefs or owners?). The server was very friendly and the place had a very local business feel to it, which was definitely something I'd love to support, but ultimately the food has to be good and/or worth the price paid!

The fish was flavorless and didn’t taste fresh. Shrimp tempura was soggy, and the rice wasn’t proper Japanese sushi rice. The Katsu Curry Don had a very stingy portion of pork (~3oz for a $22.95 bowl). We came here because of decent reviews and the nice location, but the food was far below expectations. Won’t be returning. Possibly the worst sushi restaurant in the peninsula area.
