Marukai Market in West LA is a great Japanese grocery store with a wide variety of products. They sell fresh sashimi and sushi inside the store, and everything looked very fresh and well prepared. There are also many kinds of ramen, baked goods, and ready-to-eat meals. I was pleasantly surprised to see Korean products as well, including Bibigo dumplings and Korean instant ramen. It’s nice to find both Japanese and Korean food in one place. Overall, it’s a clean and well-organized market, and a great spot if you’re looking for Asian groceries in the area.
If you just returned from Japan on vacation & you just didn't get all you wanted to bring home.... Japan is right here in WLA... Don Quiote😆😂🤣 & all those special foods you tried...
It was my first time here at Marukais, honestly. The food here is superb. From the prepaid meal kits, to the sushi(Korean and Japanese), to poke, to the Asian beers and sake. Prices were better than the leading super markets, and parking was readily available. Very glad I found this place, which is not obvious, since I've been going to the Taco Bell next door for years. You should absolutely give this place a try. They also have produce, snacks, drinks, nick nacs, and more.
Great selection of prepared meals, lovely choices on Japanese ingredients for cooking, and lots of available Don Quijote stuff. Meats are especially cheap here compared to supermarkets or even 99 ranch markets! Selections are almost exclusively Japanese stuff though. Plenty of parking in the back, and the security guy was very nice.
Marukai Market West LA is one of the coolest stores I have ever visited. Everything is so cute!!! Everything is Japanese related, love looking at the Hello Kitty items and every item as well. Love the Claw Machines, always want me to play more to win the cutest toys :)
I love this store!!! They have a Wonderful selection of Japanese items to choose from. Their sushi assortment is Awesome too!! They have a Teriyaki Yellowtail that you can take and bake at home that’s scrumptious. 😋 I look forward to shopping again!!! 😃
I love this market! Ive been focusing on a healthier diet lately and this place has become my essential stop for a lot of ingredients. I visited on a Tuesday and loved how quiet and calm the atmosphere was. Everything is well-organized. When I couldn't locate an item, a staff member was immediately available, incredibly nice, and knew exactly where it was. I really appreciate that most products are in English, which is a huge help when exploring new ingredients. Using the selection here for my meal prepping has been a game-changer. By focusing on the fresh fish and Asian vegetables (like baby bok choy and green peas), I've been able to maintain a calorie deficit and have personally lost over 25 lbs. This market makes finding essential, high-quality, and flavorful items for a healthy diet easy and exciting. I love using AI to research new ingredients or cooking methods I find here to make sure I'm using them traditionally and getting the most flavor. Since I bike here, I avoid most of the local congestion, but car drivers should be aware of the heavy traffic in the area (near Santa Monica College). Overall it’s a calm, well-stocked, and essential market for anyone interested in Japanese food, whether you're a seasoned chef or on a health and fitness journey like me. I always find something new and exciting to try.
My favorite old store! It has everything I need—from food to daily supplies. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The self-checkout is super convenient (just note you can’t buy alcohol at self checkout). The bentos are tasty as always, though they’re getting a bit pricier lately. Still, it’s one of my go-to spots in West LA!
My favorite Japanese supermarket in West LA. Marukai is where I get my shabu shabu meat, my hot pot bases, my tea, and mostly everything Japanese I need for my kitchen. I think the prices are more reasonable than Mitsuwa or Nijiya, but I go to those places for different reasons. I end up shopping at Marukai the most and then eating at the food court at Mitsuwa. Pro tip: after 7pm, the bentos and prepared foods at Marukai go on discount if you ever want a cheap but hearty Japanese dinner!
Marukai Market is a paradise for anyone who loves Asian groceries and specialty foods. The store has a wide selection of fresh produce, seafood, snacks, and unique Japanese products that are hard to find elsewhere. The layout is clean and organized, making it easy to find everything you need. The staff is friendly and helpful, and prices are reasonable for the quality and variety offered. Whether you’re looking for ingredients to cook authentic Japanese meals or just want to explore new snacks and treats, Marukai Market is a must-visit! ✨ Overall: Great selection, fresh products, and a fun shopping experience for food lovers.
One of the best products with smile of all kind of background employees. I recommend eggs. Some Japanese dishes use raw eggs, and they are fresh from free-range chickens, free of harmful bacteria. This is what egg yolks used to look and taste like. Reasonable!
Usually, I go to one of the locations in Little Tokyo since I live closer to those locations, but decided to stop by this location since it is on the way to work in Palisades. My onigiri and okonomiyaki cravings were finally satisfied after several years lol! I live close to Little Tokyo but don't always have time to stop over that way, plus parking can be a nightmare in that area. It's great if you don't have a car to worry about, and I used to go there a lot when I didn't have one. Here at West LA parking is free and plentiful, albeit a little cramped. If you can't find surface parking (located behind the store), you can still find more parking in the underground lot, there are signs that will point you in the right direction. I was able to get parking in the back lot, so didn't need to venture underground on this haul. Anyway, the store is clean and cozy and the staff are also friendly. I'll def be back by again soon for more goodies. Also, shopping here is like getting a small taste of the famed Don Quijote in Japan since Marukai is owned by Don Quijote! The reusable grocery bag I received has the Don Quijote Penguin character on it! So cute! Btw, I leave for Japan in less than 4 months! So exciting! ☺️☺️⛩️🌸🇯🇵
I was looking for a certain brand of Japanese shampoo, and Marukai has an outstanding selection of personal care, cosmetics, household, and cooking items. This is in addition to a wide range of Asian foods, fish, sushi, and bento box fresh meals prepared daily (in the refrigerator section). Love that I can find most of my Asian grocery needs in WLA, without having to drive downtown to Little Tokyo or Chinatown.
I just came back from Japan and was excited to see this place while visiting Santa Monica. Pretty reasonable prices for imported goods, saw lots of stuff I haven’t seen at smaller Japanese markets in SF Bay where I live. However, the egg sandwich is inedible. If you’re hoping for a sandwich like 7-11/Lawsons, etc, skip this. I love eggs everything and was disappointed.
Great parking. Parking is free, they have upper and lower level parking. This is a great place to get Japanese specialty food and snacks. Sushi is made from rice in Japan. They have ice cream from Japan. Service is awesome & so is security. . They also have a makeup section & kitchen ware. You can get alcoholic beverages. . They have a self service checkout.
This market is great for finding Japanese specialties. There are customers that walk out of this store with multiple bags. So many items appeal to me that I sorta got lost in the moment. You’ll find everything that you need for your Japanese cooking. You’ll also find snacks and noodles, which is my personal favorite. There are more than just that, and the prices on most items here are pretty affordable.
Delicious Japanese market. I go here to get sushi and saki and all kinds of sweets and yummies for gifts. It's a great Japanese market. If you're in LA - it's worth a stop. It's great to come here, p…
My go to Japanese Hawaiian combo market. This one is satellite one. Mothership is in Gardena, super awesome
Great place to find authentic Japanese food and groceries. Easy to access everything. Prices seem fair. If you're looking for authentic Japanese items definitely a place to go.
Simply very professional, helpful and courteous staff and provide a very diverse range of selection related to the kitchen. Including utensils, dishware appliances, fresh and frozen food products to ready made Japanese meals. For a medium size space, I'm impressed. Peace on earth
Great market for Asian specialty foods. They offer a very nice selection of sushi, sashimi, and bento boxes for lunch every day from 11:30 am.
The store doesn't take EBT currently, I was really surprised because it's a pretty big grocery store and not a small business, I haven't seen that yet and I go out shopping a lot. I was told that they're in the process of applying again and we're denied prior and that the application wasn't accepted. Besides that inconvenience there's so much good stuff there that you don't see anywhere else from Ramen to seafood, candy even some toy's. They do have a self checkout as well, fresh produce and ice. The prices are really good on a lot of things which I really liked. There's plenty of parking and the staff is very nice and helpful. I really enjoyed my time shopping there and browsing through the aisles there. I will definitely be coming back. And looking forward for the EBT to be accepted. I understand that the application wasn't accepted the first time and that they're doing it over so people can use EBT at their stores.
Love this market! Ready to go food always tastes delicious! My fave is the seared salmon sushi, yellowtail jalapeño sushi, and takoyaki!! \n\nLots of great variety of stuff in this small store. All s…
