I don’t know what’s with the bad reviews about the staff they were lovely to me and constantly checking in. Food was on point and the foo foo drinks are delicious. Iconic for a reason. I can’t wait to come back and try some more food. I had the triple mu shu and loved it.
Best Chinese food in Los Angeles period! The 4.2 stars is absolutely ridiculous! This is easily a 5 Star rating! The food is superb and everyone is so friendly and accommodating! Been going here for 4 years and it never ever disappoints! I grew up in NY and this is just as good as New York,if not better! 👍👍
First I had doubt about this place, because the dishes looked too” American “ to me. We ordered BBQ ribs, stir fried noodles, spicy lamb, they all tasted surprisingly delicious. Even though they are not authentic Chinese Chinese food, I still enjoyed them a lot.
We came here to celebrate my grandmother’s birthday over the weekend and had an absolutely fantastic time. The service was great, the food was stellar. The eggplant and spicy chow fun were especially excellent. We were a large party with a severe peanut allergy and other dietary restrictions in the midst and they accommodated the food allergy extremely well and had plenty of options for vegetarian and pescatarian diets. The decor was so much fun and our server was incredibly kind and patient. I typically don’t care for Chinese food but this changed that.
Stunning space for delicious Chinese food! Can’t wait to go back! We came to celebrate a friends birthday and although they had not yet gotten their liquor license we still had a blast drinking Chinese beer and trying all their delicious food! Queens chicken was my personal favorite as well as the string beans. Honestly there wasn’t a bad bit to be had, thus why I only snapped a pic of the beans because we ate everything else up so fast! This is an excellent setting for a birthday or celebration - you really feel like you’re in another world with all the decor. Staff was friendly and very attentive to our large group which was so appreciative.
My fiancé and I went in for dinner tonight and sat at the bar since we didn’t make a reso beforehand. The food was great and so were the drinks. I really wanna shout out our bartenders. They were really nice, good conversation and just a pleasure to chat with while we dined. I didn’t actually catch their names even though we were chatting a bunch but it was 2 guys. Thanks for the great service! Good luck with the new venue and good luck with hosting more shows! We will be back next time we were in town!
Rarely when a restaurant loses it space and has to reopen in a brand new one is the result an improvement. So pleased to say the team behind Genghis Cohen, like the Dodgers, have hit more than a home run. They’ve won the World Series with this reopening. The space itself is beautiful, the lighting the atmosphere the seats, even the bathrooms. And the bar with the aquarium - fantastic. How did they make the 40 year-old menu the same and yet better? Such a great experience can’t wait to go back. The volcano chicken, the crackerjack shrimp, and the simple wonton soup, oilfield, fresher, and improved, and the Szechuan beef got just the right spice level was.
Such a wonderful meal. Great ambiance and amazing service! This is a new, temporary location until they find a permanent space so the space is a lot smaller than their former location on La Brea! Our waiter was so helpful and the staff there made sure everything was perfect! The food was good and the restaurant wasn't too packed so it was a nice evening with friends. They do not have live music at the temporary location.
❤️❤️❤️Before visiting, I already fell in love with this place just from searching online — the vibe completely drew me in. Dining out isn’t only about the food; sometimes the atmosphere makes all the difference, and many local spots tend to miss that part. But this place captures it perfectly — a small yet richly designed interior with a sophisticated, almost cinematic Chinese mood (honestly, maybe even cooler than what you’d find in China itself!). A floating dragon in the center and glowing round red lamps make the space feel unique and full of personality. We came as a party of two, and the tables are pretty close together, so I gave up sitting on the inside seat — I was afraid my clothes might brush against someone else’s food, haha. The service was amazing — there was even a staff member dedicated just to refilling water, so we never felt unattended. One dish with pork had a bit of a strong aroma for my taste, but overall, the food was delicious and satisfying. There are a couple of big round tables that look perfect for families, and the booth seats seem great for groups too. Prices are on the higher side, but totally worth it for the experience. Definitely make a reservation — it’s often fully booked. I was lucky to get a walk-in spot thanks to someone’s no-show! It’s a bit dim inside, which makes it an ideal date spot. After dinner, we took a walk to The Grove, which is right nearby. Parking-wise, there’s valet, but I just parked along a nearby residential street. The whole area has lots of cool, trendy places to explore — it’s the perfect slice of LA nightlife. If you’re in town, check out this New York–style Chinese restaurant — it’s absolutely worth the visit.😘
I had the most incredible time here. let me start by saying I love the decor of this place and how it's set up. It reminds me of old school restaurants and it just colorful and fun. Huge shout out to the staff here and JP. The service was outstanding. Everyone who touched the table elevated the experience. But the food??? Oh my gosh. It was so good. Everything we had was delicious. My favorite items were the Szechuan Queen Chicken Wings, shrimp toast, and the Pineapple Fried rice with pork. Seriously cannot wait to come back here. Thank you so much.
I had a fun time... We went around 3pm. Food came fast and hot. Some reviews said the food was cold, I don't know what they were talking about egg rolls burnt my tongue, the butterfly shrimp was super hot as well, I had to wait for them to cool down before eating. The Catfish held its heat well and was still steaming well into dinner. My go to dish and benchmark, is always the Honey walnut shrimp. Theirs was excellent. I live in the neighborhood and drove by here all the time but never dropped in I was not disappointed. My guest use to come here 20yrs ago and she loved it.
Enjoyed the food and everything I ordered from Walnut Shrimp to Mongolian Beef and Orange Chicken. Chicken Fried rice with extra chicken was amazing! ordered takeout and received it hot. the 4 stars is because I feel the quality of the ingredients could be up a notch to match the exquisite flavor
It announces itself in red, walls, light, energy, pulling you into a version of Chinese American dining that feels nostalgic and cinematic. Transportive in the way good restaurants often are. You sit down in Los Angeles and suddenly you feel somewhere else entirely. The wonton soup arrives steaming and deeply soothing. Bok choy adds freshness, turkey wontons are delicate, and the broth does exactly what it’s meant to do: comfort. Vegetable dumplings follow, solid and dependable, carried by an excellent dumpling sauce. The kung pao chicken is aromatic and warming, though restrained on spice, while the shrimp fried rice is well prepared. Then comes the black pepper beef. Juicy slices of beef coated in a peppery sauce. The garlic bok choy is cooked to that spot where the stems retain a crunch while the leaves soften into the sauce. It is aggressively garlicky, as it should be. Some dishes shine brighter than others, but that’s the trade-off with a menu this expansive. Genghis Cohen is about delivering the hearty, semi-greasy Chinese American food you came here for. On that front, it succeeds.
I have visited twice while visiting in Los Angeles. My first visit was Christmas Eve of 2024, in the old location. Service and food were not 5 star worthy, but not terrible. My second visit was on Nov 23, 2025 before heading to the airport to fly home. I could not have been more disappointed. We had a reservation for 5:00, and were seated beside another party at a two top. There were several empty booths, so we requested the change, but were told no. These booths were NEVER occupied during our entire visit. Second, we really didn’t have a waitress. While I was away from the table, our waitress brought drinks and never returned until she brought the bill. Another waitress took our order and we never saw her again. Someone different brought our food. My son had to get up and go to the bar to refill his own drink. Total disregard for customers, but sure had no issues sticking the phone in my face to request a tip. The only positive was the amazing 70s playlist. So disappointed. Will never be back.
Disappointed after receiving a completely wrong order and getting no help or reply from either Uber Eats or the restaurant themselves. Attached the screenshot of the order vs the receipt of what I received. Edit: they responded to my messages here, and on instagram directly. I am satisfied with the level of service now and revised the review.
I am beyond disappointed and honestly disturbed by the treatment we received from our server, Connie. Our reservation was for 9:15 PM. We arrived on time and upon being seated, the host informed us that the kitchen would be closing at 9:30 PM. That was completely fine — we understood and were prepared to order quickly. We were seated for less than a minute when Connie walked up and immediately asked if we wanted drinks. We politely let her know we just needed a few seconds to look over the menu. She walked away and did not return for about 10 minutes. When she came back, she took our food order and once again informed us that the kitchen was closing at 9:30 PM and that this would be the final order for food — the second time we had been told this. We promptly placed our food order. She then left us with the drink menus and disappeared for 15 minutes. She was gone so long that our food actually arrived before she ever came back to take our drink order. She never checked on us, never asked if we needed anything, and never even asked how the food was tasting. After waiting over 20 minutes total without being able to order drinks, we had to ask two bussers to please find her. When she finally returned, she had a condescending attitude and stated that the bar was closed and that she had “already explained that earlier.” She absolutely did not. Both the host and Connie specifically said the kitchen was closing — not the bar. If we had been clearly told the bar was closing, we would have ordered immediately. To make matters worse, two other tables were allowed to order drinks after this supposed “last call.” When we questioned it and asked for a manager, the manager apologized and said she would send Connie back and take care of a round of drinks for the inconvenience. Connie returned with even more attitude and stated that the other table was “the owner,” which is why they could still order. That explanation only made things worse. She then took our drink order abruptly and walked away. Shortly after, she dropped off the check — before we were even finished — and smugly informed us that a 20% gratuity had been included. We are a party of three. Everyone knows gratuity is typically added for large parties (6 or more) or bottle service — not a small table. The way she said it, with a smirk, felt like she assumed we wouldn’t tip, so she added it herself. When we asked about it, she said gratuity is included for “some” tables. We immediately asked for the manager and asked her what determines “some,” she said she would get the manager and literally walked away mid-conversation with another smirk on her face. At that point, it was impossible to ignore how targeted this felt. We are Black patrons, and I have worked in this industry. I know the protocols. None of this was standard service, and none of it felt coincidental. The manager came back and admitted gratuity should never have been added to a party of three and said she would remove it plus comp the round of drinks — even though she had already previously stated she would handle it. While attempting to rectify the situation, she appeared extremely apologetic. However, moments later, we overheard the manager standing at the well apologizing to Connie. Connie then loudly responded that she “doesn’t care” and that she only feels bad for the bartenders. That interaction completely undermined the apology we were given. It made it very clear that the manager allowed Connie to place the open gratuity on the check in the first place, and the apology suddenly felt performative and for show. To witness a manager apologizing to the server after we had just been disrespected — and to hear the server openly state she “doesn’t care” — shows a serious lack of accountability and leadership. This was clear and blatant racism. We were treated differently, rushed, dismissed, and financially targeted in a way that other tables were not. I truly hope something is actually done about this because no guest should ever be made to feel this way. We will absolutely never return.
Food is terrible! I wish the people in Los Angeles would stop focusing on decor/ ambiance and focus on skill! It's a thing here. As a New Yorker, living in La, I was told that this is the closest thing to NY Chinese food. That was a lie! I've tried only 2 other Chinese restraints here, and they were both better than this place! The prices alone, indicates that it's nothing like New York! If you can't get anything else cheap in New York, you can always get Chinese! I've never been to a Chinese restaurant that doesn't even offer a side of white steamed rice with their mains! I ordered veggie lomein. I got home and my lomein had so many chunks of chicken and beef pieces in it! I was pissed because, I don't eat meat! So, they messed up there! The lomein had ZERO flavor! It tasted like butter! I've never seen lomein cooked in butter, I don't know if that's what they did but, that's what it tasted like! I ordered the gold shrimp, the shrimp had flavor, but it wasn't good. It was just OK! And the shrimp were tiny! Especially for the price! My wife ordered beef fried rice, the rice was barely fried- still had white- as if soy sauce didn't touch it, and she literally tasted it and then heated up food from the night before! People have over hyped this place just like they do everything else here! It's trash! Also, the girl at the front, not the nicest! She wasn't totally rude, but she definitely doesn't like her job!
Came here with my girlfriend on Christmas and was shocked to encounter the rudest staff ever. Hostess super rude and nasty to my gf for no reason. They had 3 stool seats next to the bar available for whoever. One stool seat wasn’t being used so my gf sat in it and look at menu. Rachel, one of the employees there, came over cussing and yelling saying she couldn’t sit there. Meanwhile no one around standing wanted the seat. Rachel continue to be rude and nasty for absolutely no reason. THEY NEED TO TRAIN THEIR STAFF!!! Absolutely ridiculous to talk and treat customers poorly, especially if it is completely avoidable. The food here isn’t the same as it used to be. The crispy beef was all skin. No meat. Prices way too high. Go to the many other Chinese restaurants in the area. Hoy’s Wok, Hui Tou Xiang, and Liu’s Cafe all great choices for real Chinese food.
