We went to the Silver Star about 9:30 pm Thursday night, 1/24/19. There was hardly anyone there and we sat at the bar. The gentlemen behind the bar were very friendly and we had an entertaining conversation about their homemade baklava, a fish from Hawaii called opa, the NYC fish market, etc. We ate great sandwiches and bought a takeout of baklava, which they wrapped up securely so I could take it on the plane the next day in my purse. Last night when we returned home after a long travel day, we ate the baklava for dessert. It was delicious! Next time we return to NYC we will go back to the Silver Star because it was a wonderful experience. Having their baklava for dessert at home was a great reminder of our very short but enjoyable trip to NYC.
The absolute best breakfast sandwiches! Super nice establishment. Tommy runs a great place. Order with confidence either delivery or in-person!
I have been coming here for years. Good food and large portions. I stick with the basics, burgers, fries, soup. For breakfast, Pancakes or eggs with all the sides included. I live across the street and delivery is within 5 minutes usually.
My husband's favorite breakfast place when we are in the city. Try the avocado toast.
Terrific NYC "coffee shop" that I've been having breakfast at for years. I can speak for cheese omelet and side of bacon. Very good. Service sort of designed by Woody Allen
amazing food and service. I loved my cheese burger and the portions were massive.
The food is great and the service was good. It's a bit pricey but the portions are big. I had the breakfast burrito with home fries. I had to take the rest home for later. Other dishes like steak sandwich and burgers are good as well. It's a diner with a twist. Very large menu items. Try it.
Did I got out for tacos or a cruise to Mexico. Vibes with the for to match. Definitely get you some!
Ate dinner at the diner the night of the big storm in mid November. It was very quiet because of the weather. The waiter was great and the food was very good. We should have split a dinner as the portions were very generous. We will probably go back the next time we visit the city.
The waiters are so sweet and the food is yummy. My boyfriend and I come here every couple weeks, and they have such delicious cakes. Really good burgers and lamb chops, and huge menu to pick from
Very convenient location, near both MSK and HSS. This a great diner! Lovely pancakes that my husband and I shared as a breakfast dessert. For mains I had the Spinach and Feta omelets w sliced tomatoes on the side instead of potatoes. My husband had the Eggs w Cornbeef Hash. The portions were generous and the staff was attentive and very courteous. We brought half of the food home. My husband is still talking about the pancakes.
I shared an omelet with a friend although I forget the exact kind it was very good. They have a lot of variety. I also shared an order of Oreo pancakes with my friend and they were scrumptious I loved it! They have breakfast lunch and dinner food types that you can eat at anytime of the day.
The food was wonderful freshly prepared and large portions complimented with free (and tasty) soup and chalah bread and yummy deserts.Friendly staff who checked on us regularly. This our new favorite restaurant.
Diners are surprisingly hard to come by here in the city that never sleeps. What's even harder, is finding a Good diner at a good Cali. Silver Star does just that. The food was delicious, the service was quick and pleasant. Me and my friend are diner people and this really fulfilled that scratch for a good diner.
I've been coming here from way back in the 90's and have always enjoyed the food and good service.
Love this old diner. Brought my mother here who used to be a regular 30 years ago. While the menu has changed, everything we got was delish and the waitress was so friendly and helpful.
Great food and service...big place plenty of seating.
I stopped by here for an early dinner after an appointment in the area. The food was good quality diner fare; I had broiled scallops which i thought were excellent. I thought the service was outstanding - relaxed but attentive, good recommendations, made sure we had what we wanted as soon as we needed it. It didn't hurt that the server reminded me of a genial movie star, but I'd have given the same ratings even without that. Not quite sure how to rate atmosphere for a diner, but it was perfectly pleasant.
Leonidas is the best server! Good food at an affordable price.
On Monday, 6/3/24 I stopped in here, after a test at MSKcC. I was greeted and seated immediately. The burger and fries that I ordered came quickly, and was hot, tasty and plentiful. The price/cost was very reasonable and the service was cordial. :)
This is a old school diner that I hold dear to my heart because I come here sometimes during the weekend with my family. This place is literally part of my childhood when growing up in this neighborhood. Their cakes are delicious! Especially their seven layer cake which is my go to birthday cake every year! Their eggs Benedict, chicken quesadilla, omelets and breakfast menu is great! Love their chicken parm as well. I noticed that they also revenue and changed a couple of things in the restaurant which is nice! Service is always good as well!
Silver Star is a gem. So thankful for all the years they have been here.
Hadn't been here since preCovid. It's still just as good as I remember. I had omlette, hubby had a burger 🍔 and both were fantastic. Also, definitely try the Waffle Sundae🧇 🍨, I thought it would be a waffle cup, no it's a while fluffy Belgian Waffle.
Old time NYC diner. Not the best for decor but the service was classic NYC top notch. Had the Greek food and it was very fresh and well presented. Probably the most tender chicken gyro I have tasted. Wait staff was right out of a old movie and very attentive. Will definitely go again .
The food is always delicious in this place and the service are wonderful. It's always been great since I've been a little kid in the '80s. But you are playing the higher price for the higher neighborhood if any higher service. But otherwise you can't complain.
We walked in for the first time few days ago. The diner looks very old school - in the cool way! The food was inexpensive and yummy. The sweetest Polish lady - Maria served us. She was very sweet and friendly and the service was fast. We'll be definitely going back!
It's exactly like what you imagine the ideal Upper East Side restaurant would be.
The diner served exceptional food with generous portions. The service was friendly, and prompt with a welcoming atmosphere. Steak with mashed potatoes and cajun chicken panini were delicious, overall great experience!
Just saw that you got a 5 star from my wife, also. (Pam Rintala). We'll be back (from Ohio) in 2 weeks with grandson! Wouldn't miss it. One high point of our trips!!
Recommended by a friend and now we are going to be regulars. We were happy with the helpful servers, the varied menu and the food was freshly prepared and very good.
Stopped by for a quick breakfast. The service, food, and price range were awesome! Great local spot.
I live in Atlanta, Georgia and was able to work with Jimmy to do two fabulous breakfasts in New York City when I was there for a trial. The food was fabulous, everyone loved it. Jimmy was so helpful and kind. The delivery person was efficient and professional. Thanks for all your delicious help!
If you're looking for a place where there's no pretense and everything on the menu delivers exactly what you'd expect, this is it. The motto, "What you see is what you get," couldn’t be more fitting. From the moment you walk in, there’s an honesty to the decor—simple, clean, and comfortable, with no unnecessary frills. The menu reflects the same straightforwardness. The dishes don’t try to be anything they’re not, but the flavors speak for themselves. Every dish arrives exactly as described, without the over-promising you find at some places. I had the classic burger, and it was just that—a well-cooked, juicy burger with fresh toppings. No fancy sauces or gimmicky ingredients, just quality basics done right. The fries were crisp, well-seasoned, and hot—just the way they should be. Service was friendly, prompt, and attentive without being overbearing. What I appreciated most was that there were no surprises, just good food served in a no-nonsense atmosphere. It’s not a place that’s trying to win you over with flair, but if you're in the mood for a reliable meal where "what you see is what you get," this is definitely the spot. A solid, dependable dining experience.
⸻ Silver Star Restaurant is the ultimate breakfast and lunch spot in NYC. As a foodie, fresh ingredients matter to me—and this place absolutely delivers. We had breakfast here, and it was one of the best I’ve ever had. The pancakes were large and fluffy, served with real maple syrup. The scrambled eggs were truly fresh, and the potatoes—made from real potatoes —were crispy on the outside and smooth, creamy perfection on the inside. They were so good I couldn’t stop eating them. The almond milk latte, finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon, was delightful. Portions are generous, everything arrives piping hot, and the service is friendly and attentive. This restaurant is definitely going on my permanent must-visit list.
The restaurant looked very empty. They should put more lights on the outside to see it’s open. I was not aware it was open. The food was OK. Definitely love the nachos that Mercedes recommended enjoy her service and definitely left her a good tip. I will come back only because of her.
Been coming here for years and the food always hits the spot! The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere feels like an old school diner.
Thanksgiving dinner at Silver Star was an unexpected delight from arrival to departure. Food was outstanding; hospitality was excellent; atmosphere was perfect. Thank you for the memorable Thanksgiving!
Have wanted to come here for a while and I’m so glad I finally made it . From the chef to the delivery guy everyone here is personable ,kind and efficient . Very clean and lots and lots of food options . Be sure to check out their dessert fridge too . Loved sitting at the bar and hearing the guy who answers the phone be so patient with people ordering over the phone . Everyone that came in seems to know the owners and I love that . This will be my new go to diner for sure . Thank you for a great experience Silver Star . See you soon
Food is always very good. Have had sandwiches and hot meat dishes. Service is iffy. Today, lunch was quiet but waiters were not attentive; asked 3 times for half n half for my coffee. Had to get up to catch his attention.
I was unable to eat dir to the fact I had a surgery scheduled later that day. The food my mom ordered was cooked to her liking. The service provider was exceedingly attentive.
Great neighborhood diner - coffee comes quickly (as does a glass of water for the hangover) and breakfast plates are great standby faves. Not epic dining, but hey you've got to take a break from Daniel and Jojo every so often, right?
The only knock on this place is that it's expensive. You can eat at a "nicer" restaurant for the same price. However, as diners go the food is quite good, the portions huge, waiters friendly and the dining area quite expansive and with lots of big comfy booths.
I had just came out from Memorial Sloan Kattering & I was very hungry since I had no lunch today. Silver Star Dinner happen to be on my way to the bus stop. Went in had me a veggie burger was pretty good and a side order of onion rings which happen to be very thin I believe they were the frozen kind. But they were ok since I had no lunch today. The place is clean and they were courteous. But not a place I would go often.
A quality-diner serving breakfast classics the same way they have for decades. Exactly what you would expect from a diner. Coffee fill-ups are free and waiters are extremely accommodating.
The Mexican omelet is very good and always fresh coffee. My wife had the multi grain French toast with fresh berries and she loved it. The service is always good and friendly.
Moms & Teens Friday outing - we wanted a close place that allowed a variety of choices, a diner of course. SS is a great space. Friendly staff. Clean, brightly lit, busy but not swamped. Server was great, helpful, and treated us respectfully. Didn't have to wait long. Food was good. Our table had a mixture, variety of foods you expect of a good diner. Pancakes excellent. Meat lasagna was daily special and good. Burgers excellent, cooked how we requested. Fresh tasty salad. Fries hot and perfect. Chicken fingers were all right season-wise but cooked well and hot. We got dessert to go because it all looked but we were stuffed. Excellent meal. Would visit again.
Decent local diner. We got a gyro that was pretty good. I wish i knew it didn't come with fries but i was luckily able to take some from someone that got a platter. I should have looked at the menu more carefully. The kids pasta was a good size. The sauce a bit sour for me but my kid still ate a decent amount
The service here is super attentive, friendly, accommodating. The food is pretty average. I had a Cobb salad, and it was no big deal. I will say that they do serve lovely slices of warm challah with your meal if you want it. I don't eat grains...so it was lost on me. The prices here are indicative of the neighborhood...unreasonable and unimpressive. The place was pretty empty at a relatively reasonable dinner time, and the place is quite large. This would explain the high costs of the food, as overhead must be really overwhelming. If I felt like eating in that neighborhood again, I might come back...but not likely.
Typical old style New York, Greek run diner. Great fresh breakfast in gold style diner that are going extinct
The staff was SUPER friendly and they were also very generous by letting me stay in my booth to work on a project for basically the entire morning (it honestly would have been reasonable if they’d kicked me out after so long, so I really appreciate that they let me stick around)
There’s a lot of diners in the UES. This is certainly among the higher end quality and price wise. I met my roommate here for a late breakfast one afternoon and we regaled ourselves on societies foibles and the disgusting nature of dating in NYC. Humans of NY should be ashamed of themselves, but not the Silver Star, you’re alright,
Siver Star is an old-school diner; the menu is endless; it has everything from a morning sandwich to steaks and desserts. We went there for brunch; the service was fast and professional. The portions are large and satisfying. We had no expectations for gourmet food, so we were not disappointed. In a conclusion it's a nice diner for a quick brunch or lunch at fair prices.
Service was great, food came out very quickly. Besides that, my Greek salad was pretty bland, overpriced, and didn't even come with Greek dressing. It's a pretty standard diner.
The french fries are to die for but they're too pricey as a side dish. And if you take them home and reheat, just forget about it. I would prefer friendlier service, and to not feel rushed.
Place had only one waiter who was very polite. I ordered an omelet it was great. My friend ordered the special Mousaka didn't care for it much. Typical diner but atmosphere can use some sprucing up.
Good service, but breakfast was mediocre. The scrambled eggs were not quite done, and the hash browns were tasteless. The ham and cheese omelette was just ok. The coffee was good. We will try other restaurants for breakfast next time.
I've been here a few times. It's alright. Average food - standard diner stuff, but a little bit more expensive than other diners in this area. There are 1 or 2 staff here who are incredibly rude. So yeah, it's very average, but unfortunately there are some very rude staff members.
On a cold morning, happened to be starving and I walked pass this place. Figure, why not! Overall, ok food and friendly service. Coffee is strong enough to wake me up. Alaskan Benedict is average, good portion. Nothing more nothing less. So so at best!
Fast service in bringing out our dishes although our waiter disappeared for a while when we needed him. The food is solid dishes, especially the omlettes but overpriced for a diner! An omelette dish and chicken salad cost us $40 before tax and tip not including any drinks. The chicken salad portion was ok but not enough to justify $20! Would only go if there are no other options around otherwise skip it!
My first and last experience at this restaurant was not what I expected. While checking out my food, there was a roach crawling on the counter. I was modified, while the cashier just simply took a napkin and killed it. I would never eat at this establishment again.
Food is decent. Bacon is thin. Home fries are the most bland I’ve ever had.
Waiters are nice. Atmosphere is pretty much that of a diner. I know the area can be pricey, but the food was mediocre given the cost. My alcoholic beverage tasted like 99% juice and 1% alcohol. A drink that cost me $15 alone. Our party of 4 ended up paying $160 for diner quality food that should not have cost more than $80 maximum. I wouldn't blame the cooks, just the prices are too high for average diner food.
First-time visit. Recommended by AP at Julia Richman High School. We had the brunch. Usually brunches have unlimited drinks but not here. The omelets were bland. Needed seasoning.Too much butter on the toast.
Waiters were nice with the everyday stuff, but being a tourist and not understanding how payment and tipping works, they seemed to lose themselves. So i had to wait at least 5 minutes to pay, they were more or less rude, plus the pancakes weren't good at all. It's how boredom probably tastes.
The Silver Star LOOKS like a diner. Until you see the right side of the menu. At these prices, the place should be named "Golden Star," and have starched linen tablecloths and silk napkins. May be the city's only expense-account diner. Food is... well, diner quality. Quite generous portions, but the smallest wine glasses I've seen in decades.
I've lived next door for seven years and eat out regularly. I've eaten here twice. What I experienced and later confirmed was depressing ambiance, poor service, and high price for food my overly polite guest described as "adequate".
$15.45 Macaroni that comes with a side of soup. A VERY small side. I'll forgive them because the macaroni was fire. But the staff was old and 'inflexible'. Couldn't clearly communicate that Alfredo Pasta was not on the menu without pointing at things. And being very, very stiff. Verging on impolite but not quite. The atmosphere is.. acceptable but I wouldn't say comforting or warm. I'm still unhappy their 'dinner' wasn't a full meal. I don't think I'll come back.
Where do I even start? I went here for the first time and never again. The food was terrible! Their Reuben sandwich with pastrami was like eating a rubber boot. It was all fat, covered with a pound of cheese and the sauerkraut was definitely old. I took a bite of it and almost ran to the bathroom. They serve it with a side of pickles (were soggy and it felt like I was eating chemicals) and coleslaw (which was fine). The side salad was wilted and seemed like it was in the fridge pre made for more than a few days. I give this place a 2 stars because the waiter was nice taking off the Reuben from my bill. Lastly, this place is filthy! There was a dead roach next to my chair. Obviously they have a roach problem if there is one underneath my table. Never again! Absolutely horrendous.
Wait staff was competent and attentive if not very friendly. Prices were terrible for what you get. We got two orders of pancakes with fruit and one soda and it came to about $30. And that was one of the cheapest meals on the menu. Atmosphere is alright. Fairly typical Manhattan diner.
This place is not kid friendly at all. They wouldn’t accommodate us with our 1 year old needing a high chair as we needed to sit at a booth for back issues. The host was unfriendly as soon as he saw we had kids with us. The manager never stepped in as we argued back and forth with the host. The manager didn’t say a word until I asked him to step in and still he said he didn’t know what was happening. He was useless! The hate kids and are mean to people with disabilities disgusting place and staff!
Liver and onions came in grey broth rather than grilled or fried. Tasted bitter. Lemon meringue pie had a somewhat chemical after taste. I live nearby and should have known better than try this place again.
Super expensive and not worth it at all. They give you a basket of plain non toasted loaf bread with butter packets and sesame sticks when you first sit down, nice gesture but im not sure what im supposed to do with that. I ordered a 19 DOLLAR PANINI that was supposed to be spicy cajun chicken and it was not the least bit spicy or seasoned at all for that matter. Highly disappointed.
Service is awful. On the menu they state that they can refuse you service for not buying over 11$ worth of food. So if you want to order coffee and a cake , there is a chance they will kick you out. This is odd considering they call themselves cafe in addition to being a restaurant. The menu also states that if you share one dish with the person you came with, they will charge you an additional 5$ just for splitting a dish. When we arrived my wife and I were seated in a comfortable booth . We ordered a milkshake, cappuccino and marble pound cake. Upon taking our order the waiter changed our seat to a less than comfortable one. The pound cake they brought us was wrapped in its plastic wrap . The cappuccino and milkshake were just ok. In conclusion, I would not come here again . Very bad service and the owner manager is quite stingy.
I got salmonella from a burger here. When I told my siblings it was from here (we used to eat here quite a bit) they told me they no longer go here because they had seen a rat inside the restaurant and cockroaches on two separate instances. They have a bad attitude and clearly don’t care enough to maintain basic sanitary conditions. Salmonella is awful. Avoid this place.
This restaurant has over 25 violations. Their letter grade is a C but they have not posted that outside the restaurant (they have posted "grade pending.") Look on NYC Eats for the violations. Includes not washing hands, touching food with bare hands, food not kept at correct temperatures.
Manager can kiss it where the sun don't shine. Twice been there and told him his cook can't make a medium rare burger. First time manager came and took the overcooked burger in his hands and tore the burger apart to see if was true. He then had his cook to remake it. Today the nasty manager had to repeat another burger. And said don't come back here. Don't waste your time and money here... I don't know why they are still open. ...
This diner is the biggest ripoff. I ordered an egg white omelette with a side salad and it was $27.00. The side salad had three pieces of lettuce. When I asked the staff how the omelette could be so expensive they said it was for ordering mushrooms… seriously the biggest rip off. I could have made this at home for $5.00. BEWARE of this place.
Disappointed with today's visit. We ordered, saw something gross and we got up and left. They know what I'm talking about. The First time, great food and we enjoyed it and came back to NYC today for a 2nd visit and it will be last visit at this establishment.
Couple weeks ago we came here and it was one of the worst food I ever eaten around this area. Meat wasn’t cooked probably, broccoli taste like it was only splashed with warm water and the rest of the food was in a similar line . Only ok thing about this was the waiter who was very attentive and friendly.
We ordered take out: Crunchy chicken in a wrap. It wasn’t really crunchy, flavor was flat. 1/5 White fish with mashed potato and green beans. Fish was cooked with butter, salt & pepper. Green beans was boiled w/o any flavor at all. The mashed potato was below par. 1/5 Service was fast.3/5 Overall, it wasn’t worth the price!1/5 I will not spend money with these kind of foods. Foods in the hospital were better.
The service was very bad. The waiter managed to mess up everything we asked for. The food was pretty bad. The French onion soup was the worst I've ever seen. The onions were chopped as thick as 2 fingers in width. I've never seen it so bad. The same problem with the turkey sandwich, super thick cuts, made it very dry and impossible to chew. Overall, bad service and bad food.
There were hairs in both of our meals.
This was hands down one of the most frustrating delivery experiences I’ve ever had. I left clear, detailed delivery instructions — and somehow the driver “didn’t see them.” That’s not my problem. If you can’t read or follow basic directions, you shouldn’t be handling deliveries. It’s really that simple. When I called the store to fix the issue, the owner was just as incompetent. Instead of listening or taking accountability, he talked over me and refused to actually understand what went wrong. Zero problem-solving skills. Zero professionalism. Zero customer service. It’s unbelievable how both the driver and the owner failed at the most basic part of their job — reading instructions and delivering food correctly. Save your money and order from somewhere that actually values its customers. This was hands down one of the most frustrating delivery experiences I’ve ever had.
We went there for hot coffee because it was cold and wanted something hot, but the guy served us only lukewarm coffee. He was very rushed to give us the bill, even though it wasn’t that busy. 👎🏻👎🏻 felt judged
I’ve been ordering from Silver Stat for decades, and it has been generally very good. Something has changed recently. A few weeks ago I ordered a grilled cheese and it was delivered with a soaking bun (oil? Water?) Today I ordered a cheeseburger and it came with another soaking bun. What gives? Who is in charge of this kitchen?
We came here for lunch on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, around 2:30pm, and there were hardly any people there. I would like to give this place a reward for being the worst restaurant in America. I have been in states like Arkansas or New Mexico where I had mediocre food but this place beats them all. We ordered egg benedict with potatoes, couple of soups, and chicken salad sandwich. Everybody has different tastes, I get it. My guess is that this place uses the lowest quality ingredients possible. The fried potatoes looked like they sat in storage for 10 years before they decided to cook them. I don’t want to describe the taste. The size of the small soup is slightly bigger than the dish you use to dip your sushi. Chicken salad tasted sour, I could not figure out if it was a Mao or some other unknown white sauce. We ordered a lemonade that was so sour that you could chase tequila with it. Overall, it is a terrible place, and I don’t know how they stay in business in NYC.
