Main Street Bistro is a popular spot known for its diverse menu, friendly staff (especially Christina, Aj, and Tim), and delicious breakfast/brunch options. The Salmon Benedict Hash and Trailblazer are highly recommended. Some reviewers mention a decline in quality and atmosphere after the change in ownership.

I don't experiment much as it's rare I get to come here, but when I do it's always the bistro slam with cintron walnut French toast. Loaded tater tots were good as well and hubs burger looked perfect.
Excellent Breakfast (all day) Best Eggs Benedict ever. the Bistro Slam was scrumptious ❣️ Great service, great team work, cozy atmosphere, and very reasonably priced 👌
Nice little place to have breakfast. Extensive menu! The only disappointing thing was the brownies that we had after breakfast. They would dry and tasted old.
The *perfect* diner, in every way. Friendly staff, great menu w a vast but not intimidating selection, specials every day, and the food is outlandishly good. Round that out w a staff that is attentive and kind, never thrown off by substitutions, always ready to help w suggestions, and you've got a little slice of heaven. Seating is tight and the place fills up fast, but your first bite of literally anything on their menu will make that a distant memory.
This is, by far the best breakfast and lunch place in 2 counties! They offer healthy, gluten free options, but most importantly they offer interesting and creative Wraps, Sandwiches, breakfast combos. Like French toast with Citron and Walnut bread. Avocado options on almost everything. It's a long menu and this place bustles! It can be loud and fast, but it is worth every minute! You'll know by the long lines out front most mornings! It's part of the Shawangunk experience for sure.
Great staff, delicious food, fast service, affordable prices and the best coffee in the Hudson Valley. Highly recommend. Go there as much as I can!!!
Food was great and tasted fresh. Waitress was super sweet and great help
Loved it awesome all the time. They're usually been packed with many guests but they are fairly worth all the wait ✋️ Iv always been starving mode when comes nxt time I'll try to come to take video pictures lol I simply get too happy for eating each time I forgotten about pics 😆 🤣
Food and atmosphere was amazing. Can't wait to visit again.
Have made stopping here for breakfast a tradition during our annual trips to upstate NY and Vermont. Awesome menu, not your usual repetitive selections, always primo quality every time. Your only concern will be trying to choose what to order, you might just want to get one of each. Can't wait to get there again!
This an old favorite of mine. Food is always fresh and delicious. Great service, reasonably priced, casual vibe.
I have eaten at the Bistro countless times, but had dinner for the first time. We had delicious vegan meals. They served generous portions for a great price. I’m not vegan , but really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Same space , but different vibe with nice background music and very friendly service.
Took my friend there while his car was getting worked on and both of us were amazed at the food!! Banana pancakes were out of this world!! Great atmosphere and friendly service!! Will recommend to anyone and will definitely be coming back again!!
I spent many years enjoying The Main Street Bistro back in the early nineties. This was my first time back since moving away in 1995. I was not disappointed. The food is still great. Nothing fancy, just wholesome and filling. The coffee is good. Service was great. Doug Beans still has the work a day magic, drumming out the goods. Thanks
This is hands down my favorite breakfast spot in the area. Great vegan and vegetarian options. The price is so reasonable as well. The chicken and waffles were great. Any dish with home fries you will surely enjoy.
Can't go wrong with Main Street Bistro located in the heart of downtown New Paltz. You will never leave this place hungry. Highly recommend the Salmon Hash which has poached eggs, tomato, scallions and home fries topped with asiago cheese and hollandaise sauce. If you just want a quick bite, order the Breakfast Special - two eggs any style with home fries and whole-wheat toast. You can thank me later.
They honored my dietary restrictions, making exactly what I wanted for breakfast, which is unusual, because I eat very healthy, mostly vegetables and sugar-free.
The Bistro is, and has been for a long time, a very popular restaurant. It usually has a line of people waiting to get in rain or shine, hot or cold. They are open for breakfast and lunch and we try to eat there whenever we are in the area. I particularly love their breakfast selections, and I got their Nomad egg frittata this time. It is eggs with cheese, avacados, tomatoes and bacon on a bed of potatoes. I requested salsa on top. Delicious.
The breakfast is exactly what we wanted. The ingredients sound bold, but make sense on your pallet. My husband had the Alamo and I had the corn beef hash. The corn beef hash wasn’t your traditional CBH but holy moly it was insanely good! I would 100% be back to this cute spot, the service is also perfect!
This place is phenomenal if you are in the city of New Paltz. You must visit the main Street bistro The staff is a wonderful and this service is impeccable if you can ask for the waitress Callie she is just adorable and fantastic. Also the food is just totally awesome This is my third time here I love this place.
My family and I LOVE the Bistro. We've been enjoying the food and service for over 20 years.
This is my all time favorite breakfast spot! The food is fantastic, the prices are good, the service is awesome and I am so glad that everything has stayed the same after the restaurant owners had changed. This is a place to try new things because you'll never be disappointed. The line is usually out the door but it is always worth the wait!
Great choice for breakfast, brunch, or lunch! Diverse menu of delicious options, very personalized, and served by highly competent staff, all surrounded in a comfy, down-to-earth vibe.
Update: my first review continues to stand! Love the Main Street Bistro! The Main Street Bistro is a must go! Every time we are in the area, we make it a point to go. All food options are delicious! Service is always top-notch! It is very affordable! There can be a line.... because it's so good! Get there early if you can!
5 star all around baby. Christina is so great and is so awesome at the late night bistro and sushi chef Carter is absolutely phenomenal. Drinks are outstanding. Dragon ball, Volcano Roll are my favorite. Deff recommend if you like good sushi that doesn't fall apart with great ingredients and flavor. Oh! And the Kani salad is the best arouns🤌👌
I love coming here on the weekends. It's been on of our go to spots ! Everything we have ordered always comes out excellent. The coffee is good too! The host Aj is welcoming and the waitress I didnt catch her name is always cheerful. The waiter tim is exceptional good the extra length to make you feel at home.
We found this place randomly one Sunday so we decided to try it out. It was very busy and the servers were very short. The food was fantastic and we have been back multiple times since. I would chalk up the service experience the first time to business. The service was much better the other times we went and the food continued to be excellent. The trailblazer is my favorite dish. The crab cakes are so absolutely delicious. We will be back many times again! Do not miss out on this gem of a place.
This place without fail has some of the best breakfast in town. It will be a wait for a table, it always is, But it's worth it. My personal favorite is the trailblazer. But on that note, I have not been disappointed with any meal that I have ate here. The servers are great . Been the same staff for ages too. The vibe is nice too. Definitely worth the wait. Great food.
WOW! Visiting New Paltz, this is my girlfriend’s favorite spot. I had THE best Salmon Benedict Hash of my entire life. Our server was super informative and pleasant. The young lady who served showed us to our table had the coolest earrings. Highly recommend this place for brunch on the weekdays and get here early on the weekends. Line is out the door
We always saw a line out of the door at this restaurant so we decided to try it out. I’m so glad we did because their breakfast menu is so satisfying and well-priced. I had the chicken and waffles which was so delicious and heavy which was perfect when we needed to refuel after hiking around the area. It’s perfect for before or after hikes. Although, the proportions are massive so maybe try the lighter meals if you’re going to go for a hike shortly after. The staff are incredibly kind and frequently check in. This will definitely be our go to eatery after hiking around New Paltz.
The menu here is huge, it took us quite a while to figure out if we wanted breakfast or lunch; everything looked so good! I got the Trailblazer, which was an eggs benedict with crab cakes. It was really tasty, had a nice spicy kick to it and the eggs were nicely poached. Definitely a meal I'd come back for. My wife got the salmon hash and her friend got a burger. Both enjoyed their meals as well. Overall this place has made it to my "will come back" list, and I'm excited to try more of the menu!
From the moment you walk in, the staff makes you feel entirely at home. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like a regular, even though you're stepping in for the first time. The menu itself is really big and diverse. We ordered 3 different dishes, each was reasonably priced for what you got, and completely delicious. Will definitely stop by again.
Would give it a 5 star. However, we had to wait almost an hour for seats. Food was great and prices unbelievable!!! waiter and waitress were friendly and passionate about their work. As for the cook and his helper I congratulate them on how they were handling the crowd's food. They worked as if it were an easy task. Thank you and I enjoyed my pancakes 🥞☺️
The spinach in my eggs Benedict was seasoned perfectly! I look forward to trying more of their menu.
Basic greasy diner fare. 3.8 overall. LOVED: The Benedict choices. I had the Red and Green light (I think that's the name) and had them hold the English muffins to make it gluten-free. It was tasty. The atmosphere. Hopping. Great happy vibe. The price. Totally reasonable with some very economical choices. LIKED: The food was tasty enough. Nothing special but good enough comfort diner food and fresher and less greasy than your old fashioned diner food...so more edible and healthy.
Welcome to the most heavenly Sunday style lunch and breakfast outside and upstate from the city. I’ve had breakfast and lunch here a handful of times on my way to Mohonk Mountain House. Each is a memorable home-style experience filled with great food and excellent service. You can’t go wrong if you like eggs and choose one of the Bistro’s twists on Benedict. Did I mention the service? Everyone is welcomed here and treated with high brow catering to any need.
Great breakfast specials. Surprisingly good coffee. Very reasonable prices. They have $1.95 special (eggs, toast and homefries). It's totally worth it. The South of the border breakfast burrito is also delicious (no meat, but refried beans, avocados, home fries, and more). Just go there the next time you're in New Paltz. You'll leave happy.
I know things have to change...but seeing how the place was virtually stripped of all its character from the days of Steve's ownership just broke my old New Paltzian townie heart. I was glad to see old favorites on the menu and maybe some new ones...it wasn't really the same though. I was sad not to see the wooden booths where one *thought* private conversations could be had and the old wooden bar that had so many great moments of community shared. And the local art work too...gone. Not sure if I will return...I'll have to hold onto my memories, though perhaps I will convince my home grrrllzz to go and make new ones with me when I come to town. I am grateful that the name hasn't changed-it was hard enough when it changed from The Gay Nineties Bistro to just *The Bistro*. I am also glad there are menu items on there I know and love. I wish the owners good luck and longevity. It's really an institution and I'd hate to see it fall to ruin like so many of my cherished places of the past.
I recently visited Main Street Bistro and was pleasantly surprised; it was a lot of fun. The atmosphere was a perfect mix of college vibes and a nostalgic hometown feel. The interior was dimly lit but full windows up front bring the outside in, and older and a bit worn but that adds to the charm IMO. The energy of the lively staff and full age range of diners kept the atmosphere active and busy even arriving for a late lunch. The service was laid back but attentive and the prices were perfect for a college student not unlike our server and the rest of the staff. I ordered the classic BLT sandwich and fries, and my SO ordered the Turkey Club which were both delicious. Plenty of menu options that you would find at a quality diner or coffee shop but taste better. Plus, the walls were adorned with memorabilia from the past fifty-plus years, concert posters, local kids baseball teams, and local New Paltz artifacts, adding to the great hometown feel. The art is awesome and totally unexpected. Very cool that the bistro does this for local artists. I would definitely recommend Main Street Bistro for a great meal and a memorable experience. Take quarters if you are going to park outside; the meters are not digital and only take cash (metal no paper).
The place had a great gritty vibe with lots of old posters of punk and rock shows, and lots of little league trophies and pictures. You can tell this is a well-loved local business. The staff was friendly, and the place was clean. The breakfast burger was my son's favorite. My poached eggs were too done, and the rest of my meal was typical of a breakfast diner I grew up with in Upstate New York. However, the nostalgia of a 1987 line up tour poster of Beastie Boys, Fishbone, and Murphy's Law kinda made up for it.
The new owners have stripped away that Main Street bistro memories and atmosphere vibe. Used to love going with all the paraphernalia on the walls. The staff had great energy and the place use to be mobbed either lines out the door . No More. This is what happens when any new own has ideas to change there restaurant to there way. They saying goes, “ if it’s not broke don’t fix it” The new owners have completely remodeled and have taken away that special bistro feeling. I feel they have taken away that feeling for many customers. Keep those staff members, they are the ones whom make that place!! Take into consideration now your food really has to be on point!!
I eat at your place about four times a week. I notice lately there is no soup! Now that it’s winter it would be appreciated for visitors and locals to have soup on the menu❤️✌🏼🙏🌸
When we visited in autumn on a Saturday, the place was packed with wait time of more than 30 minutes. It had a big breakfast/ lunch menu. The two dishes we ordered, Louisiana (sautéed grilled shrimp, andouille sausage, chicken, penne pasta) and Eggs Benedict, were very tasty. Service was not bad given how busy they were. I would give food 4 stars, but overall 3 stars considering deco, service etc.
The food here is surprisingly good. Considering the atmosphere and service offered in this establishment. I would definitely recommend the salmon hash. The wait here is very long, and they will give your table away if you are not present in the dining area. This is a very small place with very limited seating. But the food makes it worth the effort and wait.
food was eh and service was eh. lady was not very friendly and prices were pretty high, $13 for a breakfast sandwich(that was only okay) seemed a bit unreasonable. I probably would not come back.
I have been coming here for about a decade, past couple years after moving to town, Ive been going weekly. Everyone is so warm, welcoming, and really strive to make your visit a great one. To that I say thank you to everyone there, because I always have a great tasty filling meal and a great conversation with the staff.
I feel like the food here isn't as good as it used to be. Recently, I dined in and ordered the same pancakes I did about a year ago, but they were smaller, blander, flatter, unevenly cooked, and a bit dry. My partner's dish (also previously ordered) wasn't as sub-par, but certainly different from our last visit. A bit disappointing. When it comes to breakfast, there's better down the block, and it wasn't worth what I paid.
Good service and nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, the breakfast leaves much to be desired. The bacon is flavorless, skinny and extremely greasy. The homemade walnut citron french toast was flavorless. Just egg on bread, no vanilla and lacked cinnamon. Finally the prices are outrageous for breakfast food. $2 to add cheese and $5 to add meat. I'll end it with the potatoes were good.
Since the change of ownership, Bistro has been going down hill. From the complete change on the inside decor and layout, to the change in the food quality and menu. It was unfortunate to hear that long term employees were not even made aware of the change to the inside of Bistro. I ordered a Red Light Green Light, which has been my order since I started coming here years ago. It was so disappointing to have it come out with barely any hollandaise sauce— to the change of sun dried tomatoes to regular ones which I took out due to them being soggy and not tasteful. The way the layout is now, the servers have to squeeze their way through the tables. I’m utterly saddened by the new owners attempts to change what Bistro was to so many, and now to something completely different.
The host was unfriendly and cold. He wouldn’t let us move from the counter to a table after no one else was waiting. It took over a half hour to get our food. The waiter in contrast was friendly and accommodating though we never got to sit at a table despite several requests to the host. We went there a couple years ago and liked it which is why returned. Next time in New Paltz we will eat somewhere else.
It was just ok! There was a lot of hype around this place and I was excited to try it! The atmosphere was casual which was what I expected but didn’t feel super clean. I got one of the wraps and it was pretty dry - my partner got an eggs Benedict and he said it was just okay, potatoes were cold but had good flavor. We waited about 35-40 minutes for our food to come out. The service was fine, it didn’t seem like they were happy to see us. Also upcharges were crazy - one of our friends is gluten free and they wanted to charge additionally $5 per piece of toast even though her meal came with a toast (totally understand there should be some sort of up charge but over $2 is pretty steep. Another friend was vegetarian and wanted the vegan sausage option, he got the $5.50 breakfast special and they charged him an additional $5 for swapping to vegan sausage. :/ Overall I’d say if you want to try it I would go when they are not super busy.
Went there Sunday for Brunch and it took an hour for them from ordering to bring out the food. They offered no apologies and had waiters that were unprofessional and unkempt. The food was very mediocre and you can definitely cook anything they make yourself. Save yourself time and money and don't come here unless you want to be disappointed.
We were around the Catskill and decided to check this place out for breakfast as we saw good reviews however the food was very average. I got the huckleberry folic wrap which is one of their popular option, it was ok nothing to rave about, it was very average not much flavor. My fiancé had the pancake and scramble eggs. The pancake was raw not cooked long enough and the egg was bland as well. Turkey bacon wasn’t good either. Their coffee is great though and the waiter was extremely nice which made up for the average food. We will def not return as even the most basic breakfast stuff like we did get was a miss.
I wish I had read some of the more recent reviews prior to coming here for breakfast. Our food took a long time to come out and when it did, everything was cold. The French toast had to be soaked in syrup since it was so tough from sitting out and there was a hair on our burrito. We quickly ate about half our food because we were so hungry but would not recommend this spot. If it’s cold outside, be ready to wear your jacket inside the entire time
I don’t understand how the reviews are so good? We went here for a late lunch after a hike. Food took forever, which was alright. I ordered a burger and French fries. My French fries were cold when my food arrived, I asked to give hot fries. After awhile the waiter came and told me that they’re warming up mt fries 😱 I said - don’t tell me that you’re warming them up, to which the waiter got flustered and said - I mean we’re taking care of it. 🤦🏻♀️ when my fries finally came - like halfway as I was done with my burger, they looked like they just dunked old fries right back in the oil - I couldn’t even eat them at that point. Also, my burger was supposed to have avocado in it - when I told them that I don’t have avocado in it, they asked me “is it supposed to have avocado in it?”. They don’t even know what they have on the menu. They brought me a plate with unripe avocado slices when I was half way done with the burger too. The burger didnt taste good. I was really disappointed - in the quality of the food and service. I still gave them 20% tip as I’m not comfortable not tipping, but I’ll never go there again and would not recommend it to anyone!
Stopped at this place over the last 10 years during our annual fall foliage tour and expected a good experience as in the past. This time, the buttermilk pancakes tasted like paste. Frozen blueberries equal three dollar up charge. French toast wasn’t soaked In the batter. Bacon instead of crisp was greasy. The poached eggs were overcooked. Overall - disappointing. Not to return.
Poor service. Cold food. We were basically ignored. Went for breakfast We had to ask for the basics-coffee, coffee refill, butter, ketchup. Ordered fried eggs with toast and home fries. Simple, right? But everything was cold! I sent my breakfast back. No apology. Never coming here again.
Worst pancakes I ever had. Under cooked and bland. And so was the bacon. We had waited for an hour to be served. Service was sub par. It seemed like no one who worked there wanted to be there. Would never come back. Worst coffee too. Close this place up. Read the other most recent reviews very similar experiences.
We decided to try brunch here based on the online menu and gluten free options. When we arrived our expectations were heightened by the full house of diners and the vast menu choices. Sadly, that is where our expectations ended. We received our coffee in a timely manner; both were lukewarm and the decaf had no taste. Our wait staff was pleasant and answered questions about menu options. I will mention that we then discovered that there were no spoons on the table and only one place setting. While waiting for close to 30 minutes for our food, we sat at a very small table which was cramped and drafty (it's February). When our food arrived the meals were lukewarm at best. The blueberry pancakes were tasteless, dense, and rubbery. The sausage (a 1/8 inch patty cooked beyond recognition) arrived late. The egg white omelette was cold in the middle and overcooked on the ends; the toast was hard and cold. We will not be returning. If we could give this experience less than 1 star we would!
Went in for lunch and no one came up to us for 10 minutes. Said had a severe nut allergy and was so rude that we got up to leave. Don’t get me wrong the food looks great, but service was terrible and waiters were rude. Energy was bad, do not recommend.
Just not a good day at Main Street Bistro. Staff is amazing but the food was very disappointing. The place was not even too crowded and the food served was cold as ice. I wasn’t expecting that after seeing 800+ reviews. Food was not fresh, not even spinach or tomatoes. I ordered veggie burger and I got beyond meat patties. Vibe breaker. Melted cheese was cold as stone. Drinks were okay.
Service was poor. Waited at the door for someone to realize we were waiting. The host who seated us made us our drinks but the hostess who was serving us wondered around us finishing up other orders for 20 minutes without even mentioning she was our server I was wondering if anyone was going to serve us. Food came relatively fast but wrong. My husband wanted his fries separately so he could give them to me cuz gluten free and they dont do gluten free there. He got his burger over eggs which was fine, and as to order. Mine was a totally different sandwich than ordered. I ordered the crab cakes with no tomatoes. They gave me some kind of shrimp sandwich. By the time they fixed the mix up my husband had finished eating. Only reason its getting 2 stars for atmosphere is cuz I like the one lantern looking light. Otherwise terrible first time eating there. I will not be back and telling anyone who will listen not to go there.
Undercooked eggs, stale bread, cold food, room temperature coffee, and discrepancies with the check. I will never eat here again. I have been coming to Bistro for years and the last 4 times I’ve been in it has been progressively worse. Today I ordered 3 poached eggs, all of them were partially raw and served in a bowl of water. When the kitchen broke a yoke and gave me another egg, they charged me for it. The Bacon was so cold that the grease had hardened. On the cold stale bread they put a chunk of butter that stayed hard. The side of ham was tolerable but not close to the quality it used to be. Home fries were cold. Also on the bill was my girlfriend’s side of pancakes (short stack I think) which they charged as a whole meal. It’s a shame to see such a local staple go to the wayside. Today they lost 2 previously loyal customer’s.
