Wonder environment, friendly staff, and amazing creative foods! The ambience is perfect for both a date and a nice gathering! The tasting menu was wonderful with different and unexpected flavors! The slight twists make an already wonderful and quality ingredient to be another level!! Definitely recommend!
We went to Dovetail while visiting NYC for my wife's 30th birthday. We have both been vegetarians for almost 7 years now and my in-laws, who were with us, are also vegetarians. We are from LA so we have been to many high end vegetarian/vegan restaurants. We looked at all the reviews about this place and were super excited to go here. It did not disappoint in any way. The service was on point. The food blew us away. The wine was extraordinary. All four of us did the vegetarian tasting menu (7 courses) and three of us did the wine pairing. There is nothing that we would change about our experience here. I would HIGHLY recommend Dovetail to anyone that is in NYC. It is pricey but it is an experience that you will remember forever.
A singular experience. On one hand, I've had better food. But not many places, and really the overall experience was stellar. First...amazing service. Among the best I've ever been treated to. The dessert course was easily the star, with the wagyu a close second. The little flourishes like the petit fours to close, and the amuse bouche show that there is a clear culinary journey that the chef wants to take you on, and it's one well worth going on.
1. This restaurant would call you one day before your reservation for confirming. 2. Very low profile, located in a quiet conner. Decorations are elegant and romantic. 3. Dishes are creative and delicious. 4. Service is very intimate. I love this place very much!
Blown away by the amazing service. Wine pairings with each course was spot on! It was not only fantastic food but an experience. Great ambiance.
Had the tasting menu last night, excellent. Well balanced flavours, textures and temperatures made it stand out. Eat here if you want a great meal, don't eat here if your idea of food heaven is Pastrami at the Carnegie Deli
As somebody that enjoys great food, I recommend that seven-course tasting. Brought my own wine (as friends tell me, I'm an amateur-plus sommelier) which enhanced the meal (and a little secret, my wine was a 15 year Brunello & and a 20 year Haut-Médoc, so I didn't mind the corking fee). I hope this place gets their second star, because it's deserving of 2 (not quite a 3-Star)! I liked the fusion of fish and veggies for health and wellbeing, as well as the tiniest amount of cheese within some tasty pastries. In my case, I saw a friend from the Army, so we try to live well whenever we can, so paying for this meal was a treat. It goes without saying, you should come here for the culinary experience and let yourself be pleasantly surprised by the art in front of you that will smell and taste terrific with the right wine and celebratory events, such as those linked to friendships and gratitude.
Gorgeous plating and a contemporary atmosphere which was in line with its name. I tried the fuji apple salad, grilled king trumpet mushroom, baked cauliflower, cheddar cornbread, miso-roasted beets. Taste was innovative, varied, and usually hit the mark. Cauliflower was a bit salty. The texture of the vegetables was impressive; meat was not missed. The beets came with an interesting lime buttermilk sauce. The deserts, particularly the coffee semifreddo was amazing and melted in the mouth. It had a delicious coffee soaked almond crumble. Devil's food cake was indulgent. Great service, great atmosphere, great food.
The Dovetail restaurant is one of the best American restaurant. The foods are very excellent and their services are great. We can enjoy to talk about the foods with the members of the Dovetail. The decor is nice for date, and I like it. They have various good wines.
The vegetarian menu was extremely fresh and the vegetables were the true stars of each course. Every dish was beautifully plated. Everything was well seasoned. The special Monday three course and a dessert menu is hearty at a great price for haute cuisine. The staff were friendly and conscientious. The servers explained each dish. Overall the atmosphere was warm and inviting while maintaining the elegance of an upscale restaurant. I definitely recommend Dovetail.
The Restaurant Week menu that I had was quite delicate, and I thought it was a good representation of the restaurant's "New American" cuisine. The steak I ordered was perfectly tender and juicy. Service and attention to detail was impeccable, and it was overall a very nice experience. Great place to eat before or after wandering around the nearby Museum of Natural History.
Fancy yet friendly. Elegant and unintimidating. An exceptional fine dining experience without the snobbish feel of many other "high class" restaurants in Manhattan. The food is incredible, with creative menus and plating. Service is outstanding--servers are attentive without being pushy or overbearing. The space is lovely and cozy. Great place for a romantic dinner or special occasion!
This is without a doubt the best dining experience I have ever had. I'm not a foodie, so take this with a grain of salt, but the flavors their chefs created blew my mind. Ask them for the poached egg dish (I can't remember the exact name), but everything I had was amazing. The service was just as excellent. They were like food your guides. Go to Dovetail!
We haven't been wowed by a restaurant in such a long time. Their Michelin star is well deserved. The 7-course tasting menu is accompanied by 7 mini dishes served along the way making for a truly enjoyable 2-hour dining experience.
Amazing food. The Chef is outstanding. The bar service is consistently a fun and enjoyable time. Menu is always surprising and fits any mood and apitite. As a foodie, keeps me coming back. Best service. My absolute favorite restaurant in the NYC area. Great for special occasions as well as regular neighborhood dining and drinks with friends.
This is definitely the go to for a special occasion when you're willing to spend top dollar. worth.. every.. penny. The staff is fantastic, the cocktails are one of the best in the city. Try the prix fixe and end with the cheese selection. Even if you're not willing to spend on dinner, the corner bar is a nice place to have a drink or two.
My friend and I came here for the first time today. The waffles were great. We ordered the waffle with ice cream, fruit waffle as well as the fried Oreo. I really enjoyed the fried Oreos. Service was wonderful. All of the tables were taken but they took out additional tables and chairs for us to sit.
Quality food. Even a seemingly simple dish like Roasted Chicken was done very well. Juicy and delicate. The atmosphere is friendly and not ostentatious. Service was as great as the food. I went there for Restaurant Week. 3-course meal for $30! Well worth it.
I had a truly fantastic dining experience here on a Monday night which offers a vegetable-centric menu. The 4-course vegan/vegetable tasting dinner was already amazing on its own, but to me it's even further elevated by truly attentive service. I was very full and elated by the end of the meal (especially when half of it is desserts). We had planned to go get drinks after our 2 hour long dinner, or else I would have been tempted to go for a second glass of their version of the Old Fashioned. I may have mentioned in the OpenTable booking that it was to celebrate my friend's birthday, but did not remind the hostess when she called to confirm my reservation 2 days prior. Nevertheless, they surprised us both by presenting my friend with a congratulatory chocolate gelato dessert (vegan), with a lit candle and all, along with our respective dessert choices. It's the littlest things, but the most effective means to get love and loyalty out of patrons. I'm sure I'll be back.
We came here for my hubby's birthday and the experience was amazing! The food was so delicious and the service was exquisite. Very attentive staff. Very classy. We will definitely be going again!
The vegetable-focused Monday-night menu makes an excellent special-night-out for a vegetarian or vegan (or really for anyone-- this grown up veggie-forward food is not the kind that's offputting to die-hard meat-fans.) It's pricey, but easily the best fine-dining experience I've had in New York. The bar is also terrific, featuring great seasonal specialty cocktails. The brunch menu is less vegan-friendly; stick to Mondays if you're looking for a top-notch vegan night out.
Really love the Monday vegetarian tasting menu. Each dish we had was perfectly prepared, and there were several particularly outstanding dishes. Dessert is also extremely good here.
For years, Dovetail has been perhaps my favorite fine dining option in the city... and not just because I live nearby. This is truly a destination-worthy restaurant, which is all but unheard of on the upper west side. Chef Fraser is not only meticulous (which, along with impeccable but unpretentious service, earned him a Michelin star), but he is also constantly experimenting and evolving. I personally prefer most of the dishes on offer here to those St establishments such as Per Se, because they are on par, but less pretentious, and served in an atmosphere that isn't stodgy. Recent menu additions have been a bit brighter in taste than previous efforts, and trendier in presentation, along the lines of Fraser's offerings at Narcissa. The newish redecorating of the space complements the food, and has made the restaurant feel a lot less stuffy, even if there is something of a downtown vibe that some might feel is out of place. What keeps me coming back time after time? Outstanding dishes (try one of the superb tasting menus!) at more than reasonable prices for this caliber of cooking. Also of note: the vegetarian options, including a tasting menu. If looking for a bargain, the Sunday/Sundae Suppa is a lighter meal priced very reasonably. I could not recommend Dovetail more highly. A quick note on my rating scale: 5 stars = exceptional food & service; 4 stars = excellent food & service; 3 stars = decent to good (top-of-the-line for fast service restaurants); 2 stars = mediocre; 1 star = not recommended.
this is a great find and still a well kept secret. I love the fact that a chef that is vegetarian can cook chicken pork incredibly well. The vegetarian food is so good I cant express in words. I can almost become a vegetarian if I ate here exclusively! It is worth your visit!
An elegant, modern American restaurant in the Upper West Side with a great value prix fixe brunch, which starts off with a variety of canapes, the main course you select among numerous well thought options, and a great spread of miniature desserts. Great service, nice ambiance, even though a little bit more light would have been welcome.
This is one of my favorite NYC restaurants. The tasting menus are fabulous! They even accommodated my last minute change in reservation date and time. The customer service, food, wine, and ambiance were all on point.
As I was the first to arrive, I was greeted and my coat taken, and then sent to the bar area to wait for my friend. While seated here, I noticed that while it was empty during the Restaurant Week lunch time, the bar itself was immaculate. The bartender came over and offered me water while I waited and I was never made to feel rushed. Once my friend arrived we were seated immediately and the server came over shortly to greet us and offer beverages. This person was so nice and genuine with such perfect diction that it made an impression. I expected impeccable service at this place was, honestly, just his voice was so soothing and perfect that I probably would have believed anything he said! First, a small complimentary nibble came out, consisting of warm white cheddar corn bread and a mushroom arancini. Both were absolutely insanely tasty. Next up were the starters, where I got the butternut squash soup with rosemary marshmallows which sounded intriguing. It was poured table side, a touch that I love, and while small, it was rich and flavorful because the marshmallows melted as I swirled them in. My friend ordered the cured carrots and duck prosciutto which she seemed to enjoy. For our main, we both got the hanger steak. It was served with sweet potatoes, bok choy and a green chimichurri. My dining companion, whose distaste for cilantro is legendary, expressed this to the server, who offered a different sauce without skipping a beat. Unfortunately for me, I forgot to ask for my beef cooked to my specification and in retrospect was surprised that I was not asked how I wanted it cooked. When it arrived, it was a bit too rare for my taste and I had to send it back. Rather than cooking the meat a bit more, they just created a whole new plate for me. The sweet potatoes and sauce were great though I could have done without the greens. For dessert, once again we ordered the same thing, the parsnip cake with roasted pears, walnuts and cream cheese ice cream. The cake was warm and creamy and the pear and walnut mixture added some great texture. For me, the ice cream was a bit to strong of a flavor but my friend was happy to take it off my plate. Overall, I really enjoyed eating here and felt that they treated us just as if we'd be spending full price for our lunches. The room was beautiful, simple and clean and it the experience is one I won't forget.
Everything was amazing. We all had the four course prix fixe dinner and shared. The highlight was the absolutely incredible wagyu beef entree. It was the best beef dish I have ever had!
Amongst the most attentive service I have seen. We went for flight of ciders! and let them chose. When we did not care for one, they simply brought another- typical of thoughtfulness. had a dish- beef cheek lasagna and sirloin - although portion was not large, it was deceptively simple and perfectly cooked. A great non-overbearing meal.
We went for the Monday vegetable focused menu, perfect for my partner and I (she's a vegetarian and I'm a meat eater). Really great food and fantastic service. Would definitely recommend.
a terrific restaurant, without any qualifications. almost every dish was stunning. the staff was friendly and professional without seeming uptight. the wines were excellent and often unusual. nice to have this in the uws
The food tasting menu was incredible and delectable. The range of taste was exquisite! The service was truly outstanding. Waiters were extremely attentive and Sandra was incredible. This was truly a very special dinner and experience that is so memorable and special. We dine at a lot at highly reviewed restaurants but this one is excellent. Julie and Paul
I wanted to try a veggie place because of recent changes in my diet. I was very glad there was a place that could handle what I wanted. They were so welcoming and served me with such dignity. I had a salad with beets in it and I was so happy with it. I loved the overall feel of the restaurant. It was so well designed and the people who created the look of the place seemed to have put a lot of work into it. Me and my wife loved the food and we loved the service, We will be coming back here next time we are visiting family. I am glad we do that a lot. Places like this are hard to find. I am glad we did.
Very pricey, but a very good restaurant. Note that here you'll find a 4 courses Prix menu, if the chef's menu. Also, on Sundays there's a 3 course menu. The staff is really friendly. Ask then anything. Also, this restaurant has a Michelin Star since 2010.
I have to admit I was a bit intimidated by this place when I first went in there. I was not sure what to expect. I am the kind of guy that likes to eat at a place that is pretty low key and cheap and this place was a little bit on the expensive side and it was a bit too fancy for me. But, all of the notions were put to rest when I got there. I was greeted with warm smiles from people. I was really happy to be here because of how well I was treated. The food I had was very tender. I had a steak and it was a lot better than the other places I have been recently. I would definitely go here again. This was amazing.
Lovely food, impeccable service, quiet. #yumbo
Brunch prix-fix menu is well worth the price. Their appetizer sampler changes up every now and then but never disappoints. Desserts sometimes left a bit to be desired, but overall it's a pleasant dinning experience.
Wonderful vegetarian tasting menu and service was par with the restaurants of this type. Everything except the main course was very tasty and well balanced. The main course was way too salty and I rarely say that. I would recommend it to anyone that likes vegetables, regardless of their other dietary restrictions.
contrary to most reviewers i was not that impressed with dovetail. my wife & i went for dinner and each had appetizer, entre, then split the dessert. for both appetizer & entre, one was good, one was average at best. dessert was also average. the setting was nice, service was excellent, but overall we didn't the mixed food was worth the visit.
Old school New York fine dining meets farm-to-table at Chef John Fraser's Dovetail. All the dishes were plated in a beautiful presentation and the flavors were unique and fresh. We came here on a double date with our empty stomachs. We went with the 4 course (appetizer, vegetable, entree, dessert) tasting menu for $88, which was pretty reasonable for the amount of food that they gave us. Also, we figured this was the best way to try the breadth of options on the menu! :P Before the food came out, we were given a batch of their fresh buttery cornbread, which was deliciously savory sweet. We were also given a savory egg pudding type complementary appetizer topped with cantaloupe, which didn't warrant a positive review from my friends who joined us. The tiny lettuce wrap on the side was much, much better. 1- Seared foie gras, graham crackers, huckleberries, mint This has been on the menu for the past 5 years and for good reason! It was damn good. Foie gras is usually too greasy and rich for me, but this was executed perfectly and presented tastefully. 1- Veal ravioli, morel mushrooms, country ham, sage This appetizer was pretty tasty and I feel like if there was a bigger portion available, it would have made a nice entree dish. The country ham and morel mushrooms added a great full-bodied flavor to the ravioli. 2- Semolina dumplings, broccoli, asiago, summer truffles I wasn't too fond of the strong curry flavor in the dumplings, but I really loved the abundance of summer truffles on the plate. 2- Fried egg, blue foot mushrooms, chèvre, asian pears I read quite a few good reviews about this dish and decided to go with it even though the thought of blue foot mushrooms made me raise my eyebrows. The fried egg is slightly reminiscent of a Scotch egg without the sausage. The blue foot mushrooms turned out to be excellent! 3- Roasted chicken, barley, baby leeks, yuzu buttermilk Upon first glance, the chunks of chicken appeared to be really dry, but contrary to its appearance, the chicken was quite tender and juicy. The yuzu buttermilk proved to be a superb complementing sauce to the chicken. 3- Prime new york strip, corned beef croquant, horseradish yogurt Beautifully presented and oh-so-tender! My boyfriend said this was the best steak he's had. A little bit more of a steak guru/snob, I wasn't completely convinced until I had a bite myself. It truly was quite appetizing - cooked to a rarer medium-rare, it was perfection! 4- Rhubarb semifreddo, lemon, shiso, black sesame meringue Not sure this was what we were quite expecting, but it was definitely unique! The dessert was kind of like a mousse. The flavors were sweet and tangy, not bad, but not my favorite. 4- Bittersweet chocolate soufflé, blueberry ice cream This was probably my favorite part of the meal besides the Prime New York Strip entree. The souffle rose perfectly and after creating a small hole in the center of the souffle, our waiter poured the caramel sauce in the souffle. The blueberry ice cream was a nice touch on the side of this dessert. After all 4 courses, we were also served a complimentary set of truffle chocolates, which was a nice conclusion to the meal. Though I liked John Fraser's more casual dining spot, Narcissa, a bit more, I can only suggest that one just goes to Dovetail, if not for the food, then for the experience.
This place is 15 min walk to Lincoln center. I plan to order the pre-theater menu, but they stopped to serve that before 6pm (or 7pm? I'm not sure), so I have to order the three course dinner. They are not bad, just barely live up to the price. The cocktails though, are godsend. I had two. They have full bar so you can order drinks alone.
An elegant, traditional restaurant in the Upper West Side, Dovetail is overseen by Chef Jon Fraser. The focus on seasonal vegetables is evident from the start, with the Vegetable Tasting Menu offered daily and the Monday Vegetable Menu offered weekly. The weekend brunch is one of the better times to visit the restaurant, as the three course prix-fixe is one of the better deals in the city. Diners start with a variety of canapes, can choose their own main courses, and end the meal with a similar spread of sweet treats. The Crab Benedict is one of the stand out dishes here, and perfectly plated.
My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful Prix Fixe brunch here a few weeks ago. The menu for brunch is wonderful - everyone gets 4 small appetizers, 1 entree, and 3 small desserts. It is exactly what I want from brunch - a lot of different dishes, but not too much of anything! I enjoyed the lobster omelet very much - the tarragon sauce was great! The service was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and friendly. The dining room is quite swanky but still relaxed.
Delicious and great service. I only gave 4 stars, because portions are small (it's Manhattan, after all) and some of the dishes were just OK. For the price range, I'm expecting more of the dishes to be phenomenal. Menu is seasonal, so recommendations probably aren't helpful, but the yellow curry bass was excellent.
This place is fantastic! The food is not only delicious, it is also beautifully prepared. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the selection of foods and wine pairings. At the end of the meal, they brought out chocolate samples for us to try- including a freaky bacon favored one that I refused, but my friends' loved. The atmosphere is very cozy and dimly lit, perfect for a date night. The only thing they lost a point for: everything is done incredibly slowwwwly. The waiter took a long time to take our order, the cornbread came 25minutes after we ordered our meal (I'm talking the bread basket here). The main course came out 1.5-2 hours after we ordered. I love to chat with my friends over a long luxurious meal, but the whole thing took over 3 hours, so not a good place to go if you're hungry and want food immediately.
Innovative and unusual dishes made for a fun experience. Our waiter was also superb suggesting a great familiar blanc from Dirty & Rowdy and otherwise providing great service. However, we did find the dishes to be on the salty side and the ingredients to be a bit unbalanced. Though I ordered the pork loin for my entrée, it and the bacon were smaller than the rather large beet accompaniment. Altogether, including the tip, three four course meals, one of which was dessert, and two glasses of wine ran us nearly $500.
We had a nice time. I enjoyed the fact that it was in a townhouse. Good decor, good service but the food was good quality but too small
For $$$$ the food and service were mediocre. The waiters keep messing up on the delivery and placement of food, such that my course was given to my wife and mother in law, three different times. Unfortunately, there was not a single course that could have even compensated for the lack of great service. Meanwhile, ambiance was good and bathroom was clean and impressive. The host/hostess were courteous, polite, and welcoming. Our waitress looked and reacted to our requests or comments unenthusiastically -- she looked like she hates working there. Overall, while the place and select people such as the lady who opened our wine and the gentleman who brought the birthday dessert with candle, the experience and food did not meet the expectations that I was searching for a place deemed as 5 star. I give it a 3. RL
Seriously? I've had better service at Olive Garden than at this Michelin starred establishment. Dovetail, my two girlfriends and I wanted to love you. But you gave the wrong plate to the wrong person for all three of our courses. And made us wait 30 minutes for the coffee we ordered upon getting seated (finally arrived after the appetizers). And then slid the wrong entree onto my place setting, while pushing my coffee off kilter in its saucer, with the plate. Then you clumsily switched our silverware to match the entrees you misplaced. The salmon croquante was tasty, with the toasty buttery crisp ensuring a dreamy crunch on the skin side. The potatoes (from steak + potatoes) were amazing as well. But you didn't come check on us during our mains. AND, you let my football-shaped ice cream blob tumble off the plate when again serving our dessert orders to the wrong recipients. AND, after saying "Sorry I'll need to get you more ice cream," LEFT THE SCOOP ON THE TABLECLOTH to melt for 20 minutes before someone (with a very impressive moustache) finally scraped it away. Sigh. Shake Shack, I'm sorry I passed you by... I've learned my lesson.
I was really excited to have a dinner at this place but got really dissapointed. Great app and entree everything else was below average. The food is really good, but it doesn't worth the trouble and the money. Reservation got delayed for 45 minutes and not even a compliment. It takes 3 hours to have a dinner. The pastry chef should get fired, plus the naming of the desserts is misleading and far from what it's supposed to be. Additionally the pastry chef totally miss any key ingredient. Be careful to check the ticket for the coats, the hostess is totally under stress and pressure and she just can't deliver from the start to the end ;).
