Maialino is a popular Italian restaurant known for its fresh pasta dishes and great service. The Carbonara, Bolognese, and Crackling Pork Shank are highly recommended. Some find the Cacio e Pepe overrated. The atmosphere is warm and sophisticated, making it great for special occasions.

The food here is amazing. The cacio e pepe is a must. I definitely recommend the smaller portion size of the pasta if you aren’t sharing plates, it’s the perfect size. This is a great spot for date night or a small group. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the service is great.
The olive oil cake is hands down one of the best desserts I've had. For dinner, they have great pastas and antipasti. Perfect place to go with friends and share a few dishes. For an indulgent brunch, try a basket of their house made pastries - they're all fresh and delicious.
The food has a delicious simplicity to it that just amplifies the technique and flavor that the chefs bring to each dish. Highlights of the meal were the the peppardele with freshly made pasta and the pumpkin custard for dessert that I could eat every day for the rest of my life. The bread baked in house to start the dinner was like an amazing combination of focaccia and croissants. The waitress let us sample wines to find just the right pairing and the staff was superbly attentive.
Back and Better than ever! The new space has a great, cozy vibe, and the staff continues to set the standard for hospitality. All the cocktails and dishes I had were great, with the Bucatini all’Amatriciana, Maialino al Forno and the Cherry Gelato being standouts. Will definitely be back, highly recommend!
This is a more intimate (and somehow more European feeling) space than the original, serving a concentrated menu of favorites. The wine and service are still excellent. The bucatini and bread were exactly as I remembered them.
So glad to have this place back again! The bucatini is not to be missed, and the off-menu gricia is also exceptional if they have it! Surprising standouts were the chicken liver toast and the salad with breadcrumbs and anchovy. Somm gave us a great bottle rec in our price list. The space itself is tinier than I anticipated but cozy. Prices are on par with the quality and the neighborhood.
Wow excellent food and excellent service. I ordered squid ink pasta with chilli's and crab meat 'delish! My wife got spaghetti and added a half lobster to the dish. Amazing, all around! Server was very friendly and knowledgeable!
I can't tell you first off how much I love the atmosphere of this place. It must just be the building - with all the windows, the sun shines in on a sunny day and it feels so bright and elegant. I didn't have a chance to try much on the menu, but all the food I tried here was fantastic. I will say if you are into wines, this seems like a lovely place to enjoy a early afternoon meal. I definitely would come here again for a special occasion where I'd want the atmosphere to be classy without being stuffy (which I am very prone to avoiding).
Delicious fresh Italian food. Big menu, massive wine list. Limited vegan options, but tasty. I had a radicchio salad, amatricana pasta and sautéed spinach and Brussels sprouts. Big room that is equally contemporary and cozy. No tipping policy makes things nicer as well. Nice experience.
Perfectly captures the flavours and spirit of a great Italian meal. And the best service we had in NY! Great wines too. Not cheap but worth it. Highly recommended
The food is wonderful, we had the ricotta pancakes and frittata bianca. They offer several choices of milk (including oat milk) for lattes and left a French press coffee pot at the table. They also offered a complimentary coat check. The service is great and very accommodating. We were late for our reservation but staff was very polite. On a Saturday in winter for brunch, the place was not very crowded and conducive to conversation.
Was our third or fourth time back to Maialino, and I really don't have anything bad to say about the restaurant. From the service to the wine selection, the appetizers, and the amazing pastas. This time we sat at one of the "bar" tables, as walk-ins, and despite some noisiness, it worked out perfectly.
One of the best meals I’ve ever had. The staff was all extremely knowledgeable and clearly enjoy good food. The Fig salad was perfectly balanced, the tortelli were little pillows of world peace and the tiramisu was decadent. Completely worth the money and worth going to.
Superb for a business breakfast. Very pretty interior with spread out tables that encourage conversations. The pancakes are incredible and portions are gigantic. Great to share. Eggs are standard fare. The menu is large and service was excellent.
Cornelius was an incredible server with a ton of knowledge and so hospitable. I was shocked to learn it was his first day live! The food was outstanding as always. I loved seeing classics like the fegato and fresh dishes like the corn and sundried tomato ravioli. I look forward to returning one day!
Great stop for brunch with a group of nine. Accommodated a last minute change in reservation with zero drama. Food was excellent, portion sizes on many of the dishes was large. Wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Overall great experience.
Honestly one of the best dining experiences of my life. The food was great, but the sommelier Cory Holt was even better. He was incredible. He paired the most amazing wines that complemented our dishes just perfectly. Each wine was delicious with incredible depth and he was able to interpret and predict our wine tastes in just a few descriptive words. Will definitely be returning, but only when he works (5-close) Monday through Friday I’m told. Thank you Cory!
I had an awesome brunch at Maialino. The granola and the eggs pepe i cacio were both delicious: they managed to make two simple breakfast dishes way better without making them unrecognizable. Not only the food is perfect, but the service is super friendly and helpful, the decoration is interesting and the place cozy, and the views of Gramercy park are great. The only downside is that their coffee is surprisingly bad: I tried both drip and French press and I'm disappointed. If you're willing to ignore that, this place is best of its class.
Came here last night and was pleasantly surprised by how delicious every bite was. Also the service and sommelier were SO lovely. Sometimes it can be hard to find amazing restaurants in this area of town but damn this will be a go to for us. The pastas were amazing and everything was seasoned perfectly. The wine list is also beautifully curated, we loved it!
I really like this place. They opened around the same time period I purchased my place, so we were both new to the neighborhood. I began coming here from the beginning. I've liked this place since the first time I came here. It's also really that they serve all day. The fried meatballs are so good! We've also had the pork hash many times...delicious. The bacon is really good...very thick with lots of black pepper; and I love black pepper. One of my favorite things to order from here is a simple side of carrots....so good. We've ordered the Maialino Al Fomo numerous times and have never been dissatisfied. Service here is great. The servers have always been professional and accommodating.
We loved our food! We were served in a timely manner and they sat us immediately. It is difficult to get a reservation. The black bass and arctic char were delicious.Broccolini and garlic were perfect. Caesar salad was yummy Save room for desserts. All 3 we ordered fantastic with Happy Birthday in chocolate on them.Cant wait to go back!
Great location and atmosphere for a group dinner. The staff was very accommodating to resolve a delay with our reservation. I would come back just for the hospitality. But let's talk the food... it was delicious! If I could fit more courses, i would have tried them all :-) The good news is this just means i get to come back.
Had a great birthday weekend in the city and stopped here for dinner. We were a table for 2 and loved the option of quarter pours, so we could each have a glass and a half of wine without drinking a full bottle. The pasta dishes was delicious. We split two apps and two regular size pasta portions. My favorites of the night were the lamb meatballs and rigatoni. It was just the right amount of food and drink without breaking the bank.
The new Maialino is tiny, but mighty versus the previous location neat Gramercy Park. Excellent food and service. Just the wine selection by the glass could be better, mixing well known regions (that have better quality) and the less known regions (which are the only current offering). Green asparagus with egg, was excellent. Although I would have opted for white asparagus as this is the season.
If you like pork, you will LOVE this restaurant. I sure did. The Malfatti is a one-of-a-kind dish with such a rich and delicious flavor, you'll remember it forever. The server recommended the dish to me, and I hereby recommend it to you. And as other reviewers have noted, they actually have very reasonable prices on wine. If you want to be a pro, eat at Maialino and then head across the lobby and watch some jazz at the Rose Bar. Perfect evening.
Our meal at Maialino was the kind of food that you would wish to eat day after day, but tasted so divinely that you wouldn’t want to spoil the specialness of it. It was THAT GOOD. Did not sample everyone’s selection at the table, but my friend’s blueberry ricotta pancakes were exquisite… Almost as good as the summer angolotti pasta that I ordered. Kicking myself that I did not take note of the stuffing… It was savory with a bit of sweetness… Ricotta and some squash and maybe sun-dried tomatoes as I recall. The service was lovely as well. Our young waiter was gracious and whip-smart. Thanks to all.
i brought my sister for her birthday lunch. we loved the restaurant. the food was gorgeous and shareable. the service was beyond compare.we had salumi plate-enough for three; the pork ragout-fabulous!; and the sausages. they brought a delightful dessert for her with candle. lovely wines by glass and, maybe it was the sun, but we loved every second we spent in the restaurant.
Really great menu and fantastic staff. Prices will look more expensive, but that's because gratuity is included and their employees earn a fair wage. Despite this, do not anticipate a compromise in quality. My waitress was absolutely attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. I'd recommend this restaurant strongly.
The food and wine at Maialino was delicious, of course, but what really made the difference between my 4 or 5 star rating was the service. I had reserved the table for a birthday celebration and the restaurant staff went above and beyond to ensure it was a memorable occasion. Though it can be a little noisy when the dining room is full, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The food was great and I look forward to returning to try more of the menu.
It has been five years since I ate at m Maialino on an anniversary trip to NYC with my then partner. This place has lived rent free in my mind ever since. Back then, this stretched my budget, and it was a treat to go out and eat at a restaurant like this. It was a great excuse to get dressed up, and live the good life. The pork butt was perfectly cooked, and I think about how the fat on the outside feels and turned into a rind often. I'm hungry now thinking about it. The service was superb, and would hands down repeat. Maialino is ideal for celebration or a night to you want to remember.
A must go for Italian fares. Atmosphere is trendy but not fake, restaurant is both spacious and snug thanks to the classic wood furniture and checkered tablecloths. We ate at the bar which allowed us to enjoy the bar snacks and the full dinner menu. The fried potato skins were surprising, with a bit of creamy pecorino and chillies. The vegetable tempura was light and original, with fennel and salsify if I'm not mistaken. The pasta were fabulous. Al dente, with some cracked pepper and pecorino, and bits of guanciale, sort of Italian bacon, salty, powerful, crispy and melting at the same time. So good. Wine selection is very interesting but - extremely - expensive, it's a shame. Cocktails are not worth your time. Service is friendly and professional. No tipping establishment.
Sashank, one of the servers, made our experience so wonderful. We (group of 4) did a walk-in on a Saturday night around 7pm. We first sat at the bar and then was able to move to a table. Sashank was working the bar area and answered all of our questions and made fantastic recommendations. Something about how he took his time, genuinely recommended the dishes, never rushed us, and kept his eyes on our table and proactively brought out what we needed — it made a huge difference in our dining experience. After we moved to a table he later came back to check on us before leaving. Our friends and I decided that we can make it our neighborhood meet up spot on the nights he’s working so we can again have a great dining experience! Food: - Great: Insata, veal tonnato, bolognese are my fav - Eh: Didn’t love the lamb shoulder (it’s super tender and generous portion - but didn’t have any special element to it), bucatini was so great.
Top tier service, sophisticated and warm atmosphere. The girls and I sat at the bar and had a few drinks. The bartender and all of the wait staff were friendly, polite and professional. One of the best espresso Martinis I’ve ever had. Speaks volumes because I’ve had quite the fair share of espresso martinis in NYC. The bartender was a blond guy with shaggy hair and I wanted to personally recognize him! He made our party happy! I can’t wait to try their renowned Italian food next time!
Went for lunch but it was awesome. I had prosciutto and mozzarella for antipasto and the ham was so tender and tasteful, so as the mozzerella. The pasta was great too. There were great selection of wine and it said "BAROLO bar" at the bar at the entrance which I would definitely like to try next time. You will need reservation to get a table.
Top 5 meal of all time!!!.. get the duck, best of my life. We had a large group and they were able to seat us early. We had a Cabernet/ sangiovese blend that was amazing too. The carbonara was also the best carbonara I've ever had. We also tried (and liked) the squid ink pasta, tortellini, and lamb meat balls. Lastly, we had lemoncello, which was not my favorite, but that's only bc it's an acquired taste, not a bad product. That all said, I went and thanked the chef, personally, for the fantastic meal. Share with multiple people so you can try everything! By the way, tip is included in the price, FYI.
I can't say enough good things about Maialino. First, the staff is top notch from the moment you walk through the door, to your server and wine service--impeccable. Food allergies? No problem and always attentive to my needs. As for the food, as an admitted carnivor that eats super low carb, let's just say that I was over the moon with their selection, quality products and perfect execution. I've had nearly all of their main courses, but to this day, always look forward to the roasted pig. Just wow! Another amazing meal at Maialino.
Great location. Right in the heart of Gramercy, inside the Gramercy hotel sits this cozy italian eatery. Maialino specializes in fresh incredible pasta dishes as well as their signature Crackling Pork Shank. With portuons for 1 or 2, i recommend getting a portion for 2 for the entire table to share. Or just one for yourself. The fried Artichokes as well as the tortaglioni stuffed with oxtail are also off the charts. Great beer menu with fun selection of craft beers.
Amazing food and service! The ricotta, corn, tomato, and basil angolotti is out of this world - excellent sweetness from the corn, a sauce that's rich in flavor with good acidity but still eats light, and perfect cooked pasta. The kouign amman and toffee brioche bun were also delicious pastries, expertly done. All of the staff was very kind and helpful, and the interior is spacious with an old world feel to the Italian photos on the wall, and a lot of nice windows for good daytime lighting.
They say first impressions last! Well, my first wasn’t as good as my second. I had a much better experience second time around. The seating was good. I made reservations so there was no wait time. Servers were polite and offered great service. Food was great! The wine and champagne suggestions were off the rock! I will be back!
For being a non tipping restaurant the service here was great! We order 3 different pastas to share, Carbonara (the crispy pieces of guanciale were out of this world good), Squid Ink Pasta with Crab and Jalapeno, and a special they had with lobster spaghetti in a red sauce. The carbonara pasta had a distinct smokey and/or meaty taste to every bite. The squid ink was very different, even if you have had a squid ink pasta before. The lobster one was very fresh with almost a lemony flavor. The pieces of lobster were poached (idk how that works on a lobster) and were very soft and juicy; cooked perfectly. Every dish was great. Good size beer and wine selection. For dessert we had a chocolate hazlenut cake with a scoop of ice cream which was really good. The outside and bottom had a hazlenut crisp to it. Thanks for a great date night!
For me this is the best Italian restaurant in NYC. My big favorite is their Bolognese. The sauce is just amazing, i dont know what's the differnce but tastes so special to me... Nothing has beaten theirs. Their Carbonara is good too! The place is very crowded, so need a booking in advance. Great service as well.
This 5/5 is specifically for the awesome burger we had on our first visit, which happened to be at lunch time. This burger was one of the juiciest, most flavorful burgers I've had in a very long time. The beef patty on its own was awesome! But I certainly couldn't complain about the super thick slice of bleu cheese and the bacon they put on top. That same meal, we also got a side of potatoes (they were not on the menu and were a special request that our fantastic waiter was great about) and dessert. The potatoes were fantastic - crunchy on the outside and with enough seasoning that they required no sauce or additional sauce. For dessert, we did the Tiramisu and two scoops of Gelato - one of chocolate and one of cherry. The Tiramisu was very light and just the right amount of sweet - not the overly sweet that I've found in most others. The chocolate Gelato tastes dark and rich, while the cherry was a bit Tart. Yum! We visited the next day for breakfast. Everything was absolutely delicious, but not quite as life changing as lunch. Although I would strongly encourage getting bacon because it was the thickest cut of bacon I've ever seen. So good!
Danny Meyer's rustic Northern Italian has a lot going for it - the food is stellar, the environment is warm and homey and the staff is on point. The only problem? It's expensive. It's way too easy to run up tabs north of $100 per person - especially if you want a glass of wine or two from the well-curated list. The plates are shareable and you'll want to try a lot, so hit this joint only when you're able to drop a pretty penny. Offal fans take note - you'll find your fill of brains, tripe and other atypical meats.
Excellent service and food with an impressive beer selection too. The only downside is sometimes you'll be sat next to some absurdly entitled people i.e. the two ladies continually reminding our attentive and very busy waitress they were "in a hurry" multiple times, then taking their sweet time. That was not a "hurry," ladies. If you can block out that, then it's a wonderful time! Wouldn't recommend the bolognese, though. For $32, I either expect better flavor or a larger portion. At nearly $10 more than all other menu items, I expected more. It's a Danny Meyer restaurant, meaning all staff get a living wage, so no tipping! Drastically simplifies the payment process.
Food was good -service was very slow for appetizers and only one main pasta dish on a Tuesday night...Womens bathroom was a mess. I had to tell the staff to go in and clean it up. I cannot understand why a high end- "classy" restaurant cannot keep the ladies room neat and tidy...have someone go in there every half hour or 20 minutes. It does put a damper on a nice experience...then you wonder what is going on in the kitchen.
An absolutely delicious and beautiful 🌳restaurant for a special dinner. The cheese 🧀 and meat 🥩 selections are super tasty and the pasta tastes 🍝homemade and is seasoned perfectly. Our only issue was that we ordered a bottle of wine 🍾and it disappeared after the initial glasses 🍷were poured so we were left searching for it while enjoying our apps and entrees. Overall it’s a beautiful location overlooking Gramercy Park and the food is superb!
Pasta was delicious, one of the items we ordered was a little too raw for our liking but they let us exchange it for something else. Waitstaff could be a bit friendlier but the food and ambiance were nice. I prefer places that make me feel like I have no idea how to order correctly tbh
In NYC for the Zagat Launch of Orlando. I loved my decadent ravioli (one of my all time veggie favorites) and simple & clean vegetarian pasta. Nice wine selection and price for the table. The staff was wonderfully friendly, helpful and great wine knowledge. My husband's lamb chops were an oops! Busy busy restaurant. We had a great time.
Foreword: I need to go back to try cacio e pepe and gricia. I had a very nice pork rib with crackling (8/10) and my friend tried the fettuccine alla bolognese (6/10) - that’s not legit bolognese, but it’s the popular version outside of Italy. Nice ambience, good service, bit on the pricey side. Good overall.
I recently went for dinner (we were a party of 3). Things started off well, we were say quickly and the waiter promptly attended to our orders. The atmosphere is very rustic, a little busy and the clientele were young. We ordered a salad to share, and each ordered an entree. I had the Chicken (which came highly recommended by the waiter), however there wasn't nearly enough sauce. The chicken was tender and flavorful, but strange My father ordered pasta with clam sauce, and his portion of pasta was SO incredibly small that he ate half of my dinner too! The difference in the serving sizes between our three entrees was crazy! The food was average in flavor, OK in presentation and all around just not what we were looking forward to. Perhaps we ordered the wrong dishes, and this was not the average experience in this restaurant, however, I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone I know.
Highly recommended. Excellent food and service. Thank you Evan for making this evening a great experience.I enjoyed my Eggplant Parmesan and a Mediterranean salad with the garlics knots. Others ordered short ribs, rigatoni, and steak. They were all happy with their food choices.
Food was very good, service was quick and polite, the restaurant was a tad noisy for my taste but overall a great atmosphere. Staff were knowledgeable about difference in dishes and preferences and they treated us well on our anniversary. It's losing one star for supremely poor table placement that's effectively in the middle of their walking space. I understand cramming one more table in, but do your eaters and staff a favor and don't do that.
We walked in on a Thursday night, the place was crowded, but I love when the hostess does not say “no” to you. We did not have a reservation, and they were able to accommodate us. From then on everything else worked out great, the cocktails were delicious, they have a serious Italian wine list, the menu is peppered with a wide variety of food. I had the tripe, shared a salad and had the Broddo. Service is impeccable and I will definitely look forward to going back soon.
One of the best Italian meals I had on this trip. The only noticeable thing was that the service wasn’t as good as other restaurants. Not sure if it is because there is a no tipping policy. Would still go back for the food and wine itself but it is very obvious - had to continuously flag down waitstaff
We love this place so much. Top quality ingredients ( mozzarella buffala is so good) and originality in the recipes. I love the carbonara with the crispy pork and the strong pepper, and my friend had the chance to taste a wonderful corn ravioli with a yellow tomato sauce... an amazing sweet/sour contrast! The only weak points of maialino are the very short lunch menu, the price, and the success (difficult to get a table on friday and saturday). If you go there, don't miss the torta de la nonna as the dessert !! It's a must !
One liner review - hype over Cacio e Pepe was overrated. We heard so many good things about this place especially about Cacio e Pepe (literally cheese and pepper) and Amatriciana pastas. We ordered both and while I enjoyed amatriciana I was quite disappointed in cacio e pepe. It reminded me of a mac n cheese in pasta. Some reviews say cacio e pepe pasta was too salty but the saltiness was just about right, but it was rather a bit bland. Not sure if it needed more talk but it was just ok. I enjoyed the texture of Amatriciana pasta more. Their quanciale in this pasta was the best I have tasted ever, very rich in flavor and both crisp/fatty at the same time. Service wasn’t particularly friendly but practical and professional. They don’t get tips so they don’t have to be friendly. Tip: Last-minute booking is pretty doable. I called the day before my intended visit during peak vacation period and they were able to squeeze me a spot at 5:30 PM. Call them and see if they can make you a seating. I took out one star because I expected a lot more in Cacio e Pepe pasta.
There are lots of great things about this place and some areas for growth. The service is impeccable; it's as if they anticipated our needs before we did! They have a wonderfully diverse menu, so it's a great place for a variety of eaters. The decor (while nice) seemed to be a bit casual and was a mis-match with the rest of the tone of the restaurant, in my opinion. Their cocktails are yummy and they have a sommelier to help navigate the 20 pages of wine options. We ordered the Frito Mixto, which was tasty (a bit heavy, so just be mindful). I ordered the suckling pig and my husband ordered a fish dish. His was yummy, and while my dish was tasty, it was too much work. The pig skin was so crispy that I couldn't cut through it without breaking a sweat (literally). It shouldn't have been that much work - I've had suckling pig before and it was a very pleasant experience. Also, while I love salt, this was too salty for me that I couldn't finish it. Not sure why this was prepared in the way it was, but I didn't enjoy it. The dessert was a nice way to end on a good note. We had the strawberry shortcake and it was delightful. Perhaps I went wrong in my entree choice. I would try it again but would maybe go with the pasta or fish.
Let me start by saying, I would give this a 4 or 5 star rating. As the food was memorable! However, the service was incredibly disappointing for the price of the dinner. Due to a hotel situation, we had had to cancel our original Friday night reservations. So we called back once we got settled in and refreshed for dinner. We called back and made a reservation at the wine counter for 9:30p as that was what was available. Had we known the bar would have had seats open, we would have sat there. We were not given any instructions about the wine counter. When we sat down it was at least 5 minutes before we were acknowledge. Though there were several people buzzing around and behind the counter. Finally, we had a young woman who I guess was our server though she never introduced herself and only asked if I would like something to drink. My friend had stepped out to the restroom, so I stated I would wait until she returned but would love to see a wine list. In which I was handed a very large book of wines. I briefly looked through, overwhelmed by the many choices and returned it to the counter. Once my friend returned, the server came back and my friend said "We would love a bottle of wine and to look at a list." She didn't know I had briefly looked at the book. The server seemed irritated and sent over who I assume was the sommelier. She was very knowledgable but did act a tad bit annoyed. (Let me say...We are 2 gals who were just looking for a nice bottle of red wine to enjoy with dinner.) The somm did suggest a bottle after asking a few questions. Which we did enjoy but nothing that I would order again. When our server came to take our order, all I can say was it felt her attitude declined every time she came over to us. Yet she barely had any interaction with us. I asked if they had any specials which she said they did not. I said "Alright, we will start with the winter greens salad." In which she said, "The Radicchio?" I said "Yes, please. Also, we will take the Polpetti as well." She responded "The lamb meatballs?" "Yes, thank you." I was somewhat aggravated by her contradictory responses and attitude. As it was clear she did not like her job at all. Note, I understand this is a hospitality included establishment. And I typically will tip on top of this. Especially if the service is good! Our food came and we loved the polpetti! I will DREAM about these delicious meatballs. They were incredible. We told our server we would like to order the bolognese and cavatelli. As she cleared our plates from our starters, she did not ask once how they were. There wasn't an ounce of friendliness at all from her. The bolognese was delicious and I ate every last bit. The cavatelli was pretty good as well, but not a dish that we would order again. At this point, it was so clear the server did not want to be there that we paid her and sat to finish our wine. The bill was over $400, which typically I would have tipped the server another 15-20%. But the way she treated us, we did not. We sat to finish our glass of wine and they were making delicious aromatic coffee and espresso right behind us! So we decided it would be nice to enjoy an espresso and dessert. Though there was what I assume a manager behind the wine counter. She was busy talking to a patron at the end of the bar. Clearly they were friends. So I flagged down the sommelier as she walked by and asked if it would be possible for us to order a dessert and espresso. She sent over another server who asked if she could help us and I said "We would love to order an espresso and a dessert." She responded, "Well since your server is gone and you closed out, we will have to open another ticket for you. And let me see if the kitchen is still open." Again, another person annoyed we were there. Please note, the restaurant was still pretty full at this moment. We ordered the espressos and tiramisu while we discussed how terrible the service had been but the food was worth it. I have to say this experience put such a damper on our annual NYC trip. Service terrible. Food wonderful!
As thanksgiving guests, I can't say we were welcomed as hoped by the hostess. Even though we were on time and happy to be there she informed us our table was not ready and to wait at the bar. When i mentioned the bar was full she looked at me like I was a dumb jerk and repeated herself. We shuffled over to the bar umwelcomed to be received and saddened by her rude unhospitable service. The bartender and waiter were def better the food was good but over salted a few parts and my tea was poured unsteeped. Its was a bummer after we gave it another shot after last year's terrrrrible christmas eve service. Why is good service and hospitality so difficult to find from professionals?!?! Used to be a fav but we give up!
Over all, a good experience. The staff is made of professionals that serve you kindly. Restaurant design is perfect. However, food wise - it was a disappointment. We expected high-level food and got not a very good pasta. Even when the tipping is included, 20$ is much too much for a medium leveled pasta.
We took our daughter to dinner at Maialino's last evening for her birthday. She resides in the neighborhood and has walked passed the restaurant many times and suggested it to us. We are NOT frugal people. My wife and I make a good living but we would consider ourselves upper middle class. We knew the restaurant was going to be pricey but that didn't deter us. "Price" is often dictated by many factors ..neighborhood, food quality and preparation, wait staff, wine list, etc. I suppose when I go to a pricey restaurant my expectations are high as well. We started out with cocktails first. At this point we were hitting close to the $100 mark ( remember there were just three of us! ) but again, it's an evening out and I just decided to go with it. We ordered a shared appetizer but unfortunately we made an error in that it was a pasta dish where we had thought it was something else however, it was tasty. Our meals came and they were equally good ..no complaints but seriously .. I had a $50 dish of pasta ... there was nothing nearly spectacular about it .. My wife had the salmon .. again very pricey and nothing particularly special here as was my daughter's meal. Listen .. I'm sure if we had limitless funds to have dinner here many times, we would have probably had dishes that we might have though were spectacular and worth the high price but seriously .. I just don't get it. I suppose wealthy people who dine here probably;y don't bat an eye and of course, there are restaurants at a quarter of the price whose food I enjoyed far better. If I had this meal at a less expensive restaurant, my opinion of the food would have been the same .. there was nothing special here.
This old favorite is back and although the staff is as wonderful as ever the food is not. Most notably the rigatoni dish did not have fully cooked pasta. The new place is smaller than the old location and reservations are a must if you want to avoid sitting at the bar. Not sure I’ll be back … there are other better Italian restaurant choices.
Food was good but nothing impressive. But one of our friends was vegan plus cant eat garlic and onion and we were not able to have any pasta from the menu just a simple basic salad. No flexible at all to provide solutions. Coffees were very good! Nice place. But service can be better.
A comfortable place with nice view of the Garmercy Park. Perfect for people watching. Overpriced food and lame service. Went for brunch over the weekend and ordered a bunch of plates. The chef's basket was great. All the other were not impressive. The classic pasta Tonnarelli Cacio e Pepe was too salty and the pasta overcooked. The brussel sprouts were mostly burned. Our server was slow and indifferent: no smile and never asked once how's everything. When we asked for a box for the leftover she even packed the bones. No wonder this is a no tipping restaurant because I really didn't feel like tipping LOL.
Another NYC hype. For an average of $30 a plate, there’s nothing special to it. The pasta dishes were just a plate of pasta with sauce poured over it, not even any attempt to have any sort of presentation. So you’re really just paying for the atmosphere and the staff that doesn’t even try to go the extra mile to give customers an experience because this is a non tipping establishment. Living wage is a great idea, but customer service doesn’t have to suffer because of it.
Had an expectation of quality...sadly disappointed. We sat at the wine bar for quiet and had to listen to a long self serving and loud sommelier talk to another couple. Our waiter was not gracious or interested rather made a point of being rude when I asked for a clean glass. and the man bun...yuck. The food was ordinary. The bread too. Would not recommend. What happened to this groups restaurant empire?
Honestly dinner was just mediocre. I live in NY and go out frequently to the standard midtown restaurants that are kept in business by the corporate card crowd. When dining on my own dime, eating at a place that’s actually worth the money is very important to me. I was excited to eat at Maialino because the original restaurant that closed during Covid was one of my favorite restaurants in NY - it was worth every penny. To start, the bread that came out was cold - not just room temperature but actually cold. The waiter then Recommended the veal appetizer which was just ok. The capers were extremely hard and difficult to chew and the veal dish seemed more of a dish I’d get sitting at the bar, not the main dining room. We also ordered the Burata which was the best dish of the night. The actual burata was pretty standard, but the sauce and squash it was served with was incredible. For pastas we had the linguine with clams and the bucatini with guancale. The linguine with clams was just fine (personally Becco on restaurant row is my favorite in the city after Don Pepe in Queens). The bucatini was awful. The guancale in a dish like this is supposed to be cut thin and become soft when absorbing the sauce. Tonight it was hard, almost crunchy and way too salty as it didn’t absorb the sweetness from the tomato. Lastly we had the lamb shoulder. This was delicious but at $42 did not even come with a garnish on the plate. It was sloppily thrown onto a plate and brought out. I’d expect at least a garnish from a restaurant like this, or some sort of plating. Last but not least, it was my wife’s birthday and we didn’t order dessert but a lone candle was brought out on a plate. Understandably we didn’t order dessert but if you’re going to bring out a candle, it needs to at least come out with a cookie, piece of biscotti, chocolate or something. It was pathetic to bring out a candle on an empty plate and then bring the check. Was hoping to love this place but for the price there is no shortage of upscale Italian restaurants in the city.
We came here for a dinner about three weeks ago after booking our reservation a few weeks prior. Our server was pleasant but a bit overbearing. We felt as if we couldn't even have a conversation without him popping his head in to check on us. Coming from Canada, with the exchange dinner was about $450 USD ($600 CAD) there were 5 of us, 3 of us who didnt order drinks. Steep price for what we felt was mediocre food. Which brings me to the food. We all ordered 1 appetizer to share, most of which were nothing special. Cheeses were an off texture, I'm not sure how else to put it. I've had fresh mozzarella a million times over and the one here was awful. We all had pasta as mains and as noted above the food is really mediocre. Under seasoned and really lacking any significant flavor. The fresh pasta itself, on it's own was lovely. But I personally prefer any Nonna's Sunday sauce to all of the dishes here. Where they do excel is desserts! We had the tiramisu, torta and crostada. All were absolutely fantastic. Overall I felt it was a significant amount of money for a not so memorable meal. I would not go again.
Oh, how we go down in good service and food....we only have this...and how the service falters. They used to have the BEST fig appetizer when the restaurant first opened. The squid ink tagliolini is AMAZING. A lot of flavor, but the noodles are great. I didn't get them tonight. Leo was very nice. Thank you, Leo.
