Amazing sushi counter! The quality of the fish is next level and it remains very affordable. I highly recommend!

One of the best sushi dinners we have had. The place is an excellent "hole in the wall" style restaurant. It has specific times for serving a few dedicated sittings for specific times in the evening fo Omakase dinners. This is a BYOB, and even if you forget this there's an adjacent store to buy drinks and come back to the table. The food is exquisite. The service is very good in a "bar like" atmosphere. But it is extremely expensive.

This may have been one of the best sushi experiences I have ever had. For the price, especially when Omakase sets are 200-300/pp this is an incredible value. Just look at all the yummy treats Tanoshi Sushi serves. We will definitely be back.

Tucked away in two unassuming storefronts on the Upper East Side, Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar serves up some of the highest quality sushi in New York. The service here is excellent, and the restaurant has the added bonus of being BYOB, so you can bring along whatever drink option you like. Tanoshi Will even allow you and your dining partners to choose from a selection of unique sake glasses if you bring a bottle of sake. Beyond the intimate atmosphere and great service, Tanoshi is serving some of the highest quality fish available. Each piece of nigiri is simply and beautifully prepared with standouts being the ikura and sweet shrimp and the freshwater eel. Fish selections will change based on what is available but you can be sure that whatever Tanoshi is serving you will not be disappointed.

I've been to many omakase counters around the city, from (relatively) inexpensive to expense-account level restaurants, and Tanoshi consistently equals or betters every one. The spaces (left and right) are spartan at best, but the quality of sushi is always next level, with each piece somehow surpassing the last. Seemingly simple preparations belie the complexity of flavors and textures possible with the highest standards of ingredients and techniques (especially the rice, which is perfection). It's been a couple years since my last visit, but I scored a last minute reservation on Thursday and used it as an opportunity to introduce a work colleague. He was blown away and is already making plans to come back. The only slight knock is that prices have crept up from past years so it's not the screaming bargain it used to be, but that's the case everywhere do I can't be too upset.

this is still the best sushi experience in nyc in my opinion. About as close as it gets to Tokyo. The price is pretty reasonable. The fish is always extremely fresh and they always have a few interesting varieties that I haven't tasted before. The rice is a perfect temperature which is a major part of how good sushi is. Service has always been good for me here. it's BYOB so don't forget to bring a bottle of something.

I Dream of...Tanoshi♡ Returned last night (after our first visit 4 years ago) and was still blown away by quality and flavors of each piece. I didnt want the meal to end! BYOB and minimal decor really makes this such a NYC best kept secret (altho NOT that secret bc res can be hard to get!) Yes, we trekked from deep Brooklyn to far Upper East Side just for this meal! Thank you, Tanoshi!

Every piece was a delicacy, thank you for the omakase experience! I loved the fact that the sole focus was on the food itself - not on the decoration, etc. - and that it’s BYOB. The environment was also very relaxed. Highly recommend!

Amazing! Very rare nowadays that I like every single piece I eat during an omakase meal. I couldn’t find fault whatsoever. They do have a lot of sea bream, amber jacks, flukes but the execution is on point which is hard to find in a city filled with sushi places that are not traditional. I strongly recommend.

Omakase style sushi bar which is absolutely delicious. Reservations are a must; each round has space for about eight people. Two chefs prepare one piece after another to be enjoyed. Best ginger 🫚 I’ve ever had at a sushi place! You can get green tea but they serve no alcohol or drinks! So bring your own bottle - they supply a silver ice cooler :) we paid around 280$ for a great evening. We didn’t say it was my birthday dinner but the women next to me got this amazing sushi cupcake creation with a little candle (and her bday was 3 days prior - so a little jealous ;) ) - tell them!

Delicious sushi in a no frills atmosphere. Service was very good. A bit pricey but well worth the experience given the quality. We opted for the chef guided selection coursed one at a time, then added a few more pieces at the end. Some pieces are traditional and others are very creative, but the fish shines here, not overwhelming sauces, as you may see at some other sushi places. This place is BYOB. Would definitely return.

My favorite spot for edomae style sushi in NYC now that the jiro place has (sadly) fallen off. Everything in the omakase was great, topped off with my favorite, the XXX (ikura, quail egg and uni). They have a nice selection of additional nigiri you can supplement with after the omakase (some of the choices are repeats from the omakase menu). Service is excellent - it's all counter service with one chef per 4 diners. I also love that it's BYOB so make sure to bring along a nice sake or wine pairing for your meal. They provide glasses and ice buckets.

This BYOB counter-service authentic Japanese omakase restaurant was everything we hoped for. Our 10 course dinner featured fresh, perfectly seasoned pieces of sushi, served with ample helpings of marinated ginger. We opted for two additional pieces at the end which further reinforced our opinion - this place is the real deal and every bite they serve is truly special. Check out the photos of our meal (only one not taken was the hand roll, last of the 10 courses). Already looking forward to coming back!

This is literally my favorite restaurant in the world. I've been here four times and each time has been amazing. Each piece is better than the last and every time I have left pleasantly full and fully satisfied. It is also BYOB which is great. They provide ice buckets for whatever you've brought and allow you to select from a number of different cups before the meal starts.

Came to Tanoshi for my first omakase experience and was not disappointed. We brought a bottle of white wine for the byob too. Not a walk in so be sure to book. By far the best ratio of fish to rice on a nigiri I’ve ever had. The fish itself was incredibly tender and flavourful. The nori was perfectly crisp on the rolls. My favorites were the shrimp, scallop, salmon, and uni. We had a total of 13 separate courses. They also had many additional items that cost extra. Definitely an incredible experience albeit certainly on the pricey side.

Stunning, great experience. I love essential and tasty food. This is the place. You call and pre-order (and pay upfront -we had the dinner menu).. they buy only the fish you need and is so fresh that for Manhattan is a real exception (unless you go in a 1000$ place). I’ll add pics because no comments can validate as much the place, just look at the color of the fish meet (the odd looking one is yolk and sea urchin, I loved it)

I had one of the best experiences of my life here. Decided to book myself an early birthday solo adventure and it was worth every penny. The intimate setting made for a more interesting dinner and the fish was top notch. Can’t recommend Tanoshi enough.

Amazing omakase experience at a great price. The sushi was amazingly fresh and delicious. The service was first class. Román was very kind and friendly. We were able to bring our own sake. They heard it was my birthday and gave me a special dish with a candle. I would love to come back.

After a friend recommended it, we made a reservation for their lunch Omakase on our most recent trip. The seating is very limited and reservations are required. For lunch, seatings are 45 minutes. We got 6 nigiri, a sushi roll, a hand roll, and miso soup. All of the fish was fantastic. It's hard for me to say much more because I'm not sure what we got. The chef talked really quietly, so we never really knew which fish we were eating and I wish they would have given us a paper or something with what we ate on it. That being said, we loved it all. If you like sushi, this is a great spot!

Amazing omakase restaurant. I loved every single piece. They are byob so that was great for our little wine club. As of Feb 21, indoor dining was limited to 55min per team so overall felt a bit rushed, but totally appreciate the chief and staff sticking to the schedule to accommodate all reservations on time. We were seated right away.

Had a great omakase meal here and enjoyed everything from the varieties of dishes, the chefs, and the service. This is a small place seating 12 guests where chefs serve each piece of sushi as they make them. Reminded me of many of the restaurants in Japan. I liked the BYOB and then giving you a choice if a selection of drinking cups for it. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Make sure you're on time because serving starts promptly at the reserved time.

This was the worst sushi experience I’ve ever had. The rice was entirely unsuitable for sushi – it lacked the light, fluffy texture and didn’t gently fall apart in the mouth. Instead, it was dense, sticky, and felt more like a large lump of rice or mochi. Despite using good-quality fish, the sushi itself was tasteless and poorly made, far worse than even grocery store sushi. The sushi chef seemed inexperienced in traditional omakase preparation. I was particularly surprised by how the sushi was presented without any thought or care for direction, something I’ve never seen at an omakase restaurant before. Additionally, hygiene was concerning, as the chef used the same gloved hands to handle sushi and touch various items around the kitchen. It made for a very unpleasant experience, to the point where I wanted to leave halfway through. While the fish itself was decent, the poor execution of the sushi overshadowed everything else. Considering the restaurant’s previously strong reputation, it’s clear that something has changed – likely a shift in management or ownership. Unfortunately, this once-celebrated establishment no longer meets its past standards.
