You will not find better ashaak or bolani anywhere else in the bay!
Fantastic Afghan food! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious — rich in flavor, perfectly cooked, and clearly made with care. Since each dish is made to order, there's a bit of a wait, but it’s well worth it. Portions are generous — we ended up with enough leftovers for another full meal at home. The service was excellent too: warm, attentive, and made the experience even better. If you're in the area and craving something authentic and satisfying, this place is a must!
Authentic Afghan food and probably the best in the San Francisco Bay Area by far. A business associate brought us here for dinner and we had the Bolani filled with potatoes & one with Leeks as appetizers. They were not only tasty but most importantly not greasy. For the main entrees we had the Kabuli rice Which is rice with shredded carrots and raisins. I’m not a rice fan so the fact I went for a 3rd portion is incredible in itself. The next entree was a platter of kebabs, Which included the grilled Chicken Tikka. The Beef Kebab (Grilled sirloin) again not something I go for at Afghan/Persian restaurants but, this was so soft I could cut with my fork. The next grilled meat was like a Persian Koobedieh or Kafta kebab but with flavor and not bland. The last meat was a Chapli Kebab which is a flattened beef kebab that was also on the Money. Even the green chutney was not too spicy. I have eaten at Afghan restaurants in London, NYC & the Bay Area and can truly say I have found my new favorite to go for Afghan food.
Absolutely delicious! The $17.99 buffet includes tea or soda. The black tea was wonderful. The food was fresh and scrumptious. Ate three plates. Don't know what the golden honey cookies were but they were amazing!
Delicious food and reasonable prices with good portions Very friendly staff
Nice decor and setup looks neat :) food is awesome

People say beware of a restaurant that doesn't have many patrons. When we first arrived at this place, it was empty. Apprehensively we entered because we were hungry and we wanted Afghan food. We ordered. The food came and it was delicious. Soon people in formal clothes started to arrive and we realized that they had just come from the mosque. The day was a Islamic holiday and they came after their prayers. I'm glad we gave in to hunger against the common wisdom.
Amazing food and service. Thank you Omid.
We went there for late lunch and it was not crowded. We loved the food, they have especially great soups and deserts, but the main course was impressive as well. Update: still very good food, mantoo and lamb were just excellent. Also, unlike many other Afghan places which are "holes in the wall" (with great food), this one has decor and service as well.
Maiwand Village is a great spot if you're looking to explore authentic Afghan cuisine. The atmosphere strikes a nice balance between casual and inviting, making it a suitable place for both family dinners and casual outings with friends. The kabob menu are definitely the highlight. The Chicken Kabob and Tikka Kabob are not only flavorful but also cooked to perfection, and the fact that they serve them with rice, salata, and naan adds a nice touch. It feels like a complete meal that respects traditional Afghan dining. I also appreciate the variety—having options like the Qabili Palau and the Trout Fish gives diners a chance to try different flavors. The prices are reasonable, making it accessible for a wider audience. The staff is usually friendly and attentive, which enhances the dining experience. Overall, Maiwand Village seems to capture the essence of Afghan hospitality and cuisine well, making it a worthwhile choice. Kids friendly environment.
The best Afghan restaurant! The food is so tasty, I crave it all the time while fasting during Ramadan. I appreciate the workers for being so kind and hard working while it is time for them to break their fast as well. I love what they’ve done with the place, many old reviews are from the old “Afghan Village” which I wasn’t fond of, but Maiwand did amazing taking over. The food and new interior remodel is all outstanding!
Very beautiful restaurant and very clean!! I have been coming the past couple of nights due to how amazing their food is. Amazing staff and top notch service. So glad I discovered this restaurant will definitely be my new everyday place to come too.

This is hands down the best afghan restaurant in the bay area!!! I came for iftar buffet with my large family & they quickly helped us. Everyone loved the food options, even the picky kids! I highly recommend this restaurant- food, service, atmosphere all 10/10. Cannot recommend Maiwand enough to my friends and family.

Went for a birthday party on a Sunday night. The staff was nice and the Afghan food was yummy. Lots of food, dancing and music. Had a very good time. The qaubli rice and the kebabs were good. Especially the chicken which was tasty and moist. Often chicken kebab is a bit dry but they cook it just right at Maiwand Village. My son loves it and likes the Chapli too. I love the pakora (sliced, battered and fried potato).

I took my mom here for her birthday because she wanted to try the Afghani trout her coworker had highly recommended. When we arrived, we found the staff busy setting up for a large party. One of them asked how he could help, and I mentioned our reservation. Instead of assisting us directly, he pointed us to a bell at the cashier stand to summon a server. The server emerged from the kitchen and told us to choose any table. We picked one that wasn’t set, lacking the tablecloths and utensils shown in the photos, which seemed to be from banquet events. This restaurant, the only Afghan one in Newark/Fremont/Union City offering trout, appears geared more toward large parties and banquets than small groups. While the food was phenomenal, our experience was marred by a 35-minute wait for a bottle of water, which arrived with one of our appetizers. Only one of two appetizers came out initially, so we had to eat separately—my mom watched me eat after she finished hers. The bread, although good, also came out with the appetizers. Despite having a reservation, we were hungry and thirsty for over 30 minutes, even though we were the only diners at the time. The banquet hall is beautiful, and the staff was setting up for a private event starting at 6 p.m. There was no music, adding to the banquet-like atmosphere. The food was very reasonably priced, and the service, while friendly and professional, was notably slow. Next time, we'll likely drive to Dublin for Afghan trout and a more suitable dining experience.
Seemed more of an event location doubling as a restaurant on open days. Plenty of parking outside. Place was clean with few tables set. Food was served warm, service had to be requested everytime by going to the register and ringing a bell.

I am a very big fan of khala fazila's food. I have been going to old maiwand kabob for years. The quality of food has been degraded and the young lady at the counter is rude. The bolani did not had any gandana in it and it was very thin. Attached picture Thanks

We hosted an event last week for 150 people. The food was good quality albeit the staff was not trained well and the manager did not exercise any discretion and loudly commented about how much food was being consumed by guests. The buffet line was single sided instead of both sides with the result it took forever for guests to get to the buffet. They had servers stationed on beef n chicken kabab stations who were again not professional and some special guests who asked for more, were told to go back once they had finished what they had in their plate. I was disappointed at this non- professional attitude and it was a cause of embarrassment for the hosts. We were promised chapli kabab but instead got kubedah

The Sher YAKH had too much noodles and not good at all. And the floor were dirty. We found a piece of old bread under our table. Their WAITER SERVICE IS THE WORST. TAKING SO LONG FOR THE CHECK

The hotel itself is clean and well-maintained, and the food was good, well-prepared, and enjoyable. However, the biggest issue was the customer service. During my visit to the restaurant, the service was very poor—slow, unprofessional, and not welcoming. Additionally, the young man with a black beard at the front desk was not helpful and lacked professionalism. While the hotel and food meet high standards, the staff needs improvement to provide a better guest experience.
