Carpenter & Main is a charming French restaurant known for its cozy atmosphere, friendly staff (especially Morgan), and inventive dishes by Chef Bruce. While many praise the food and service, some find the food bland or the temperature too cold. Live jazz on Tuesdays is a plus.

Vegan friendly. Great cocktails and amazing wait staff willing to work with the talented kitchen to make you the perfect vegan meal. From appetizers to entrees to desert.
I cannot say enough about our experience at Carpenter and Main. The food was fantastic, the service was fantastic, the atmosphere is great - relaxing, attentive service but not overly so. The 4 of us enjoyed each others company without feeling rushed or interrupted. It was the feeling of being in someone’s home. FOOD We all ordered apps, mains and dessert. We don’t typically order dessert but when we saw it was homemade ice cream we had to try it. It did not disappoint. We all ordered different everything from each other - Bruschetta, Split pea soup (amazing), Artichokes for Apps. Scallops, risotto, duck, glass noodles with edamame and other veg for mains. The food was amazing. And I mean amazing. Nate our server is a class act and made our overall experience one we want to repeat. WINE ETC The wine list was really good but I have to give props to Johnny the bartender. A talented bartender for sure and one of the reasons we’ll be back. ATMOSPHERE There are multiple rooms plus a bar area. The rooms are quieter but we wanted something less quiet so we asked to be moved to the bar area. We also wanted to be able to hear each other talk which was not an issue. We could enjoy the music which wasn’t too loud and hear each other comfortably. I wish we had this restaurant in our neighborhood.
was very yummy (cauliflower salad, duck confit, star anise ice cream). That said, I don't really have much reference for places in this price range
I was celebrating a special milestone in my life and decided to visit this fine dining place before leaving the area and I’m so glad I did! The ambiance has a charming, quaint vibe that immediately feels welcoming. Morgan was wonderful, and we ended up chatting quite a bit, which made the experience even more special. When it came to cocktails, I was craving bourbon and chose The Long Goodbye - ironically fitting, as I was leaving the area after half a decade. It was beautifully balanced and hit just the right notes for the spring season. The food was equally fantastic. The duck confit was cooked to perfection, the potatoes were absolutely delicious, and the side of greens complemented the dish so well. A truly satisfying and hearty meal. If I had one small suggestion, it would be to enhance the cozy atmosphere even further with some candles on the tables. But overall, a wonderful experience - perfect for a special evening! Would highly recommend!
Food was pretty good, service was friendly but slow. Decor was a bit eclectic, kinda grandma’s house-ish. There is a good variety of food, a good amount of seating, great parking and wines were reasonable.
I was given the recommendation to come here and our expectations were exceeded! We were pleasantly surprised there was outdoor seating so our dog was allowed to join! Morgan provided the friendliest atmosphere and the best service. Bruce cooked such amazing meals, we finished everything! I wish I caught the bartenders name because he was exceptional as well! Thank you for a great night out!
What. A. Gem. I'm happy to say I've found my favorite restaurant in the Upper Valley, in Norwich. Chef Bruce is charming, and his crew Johnny and Morgan took great care of us. Everything from the drinks to dessert are well inspired, flavorful, and mouth watering presentation. I'm so impressed. I had a Maitaki mushroom steak - just WoW. Call for you reservation and go visit!
Ordered Easter dinner take-out yesterday and the food was great -- the ham and the scalloped potatoes were the kids' favorite, but I loved the brussel sprouts too. The pickup process is executed without any in person interaction (they put your order on a table outside when they see you pull up.) They are offering family-style dinners to go (super discount on the Sunday option), as well as individual menu items. My kids have already asked if we can order from C&M again this week.
Across from the Norwich Inn, where we visit every year, Carpenter and Main is easy to overlook, but it is more than worth searching out. By the way, the website photos dont capture the close and subtle conviviality of the place - except for the photos of the bar, which do. The dining area behind the bar has a tucked-away alcove for two, which we only discovered in our most recent visit. The food and service are simply outstanding. If you're in the area - Hanover, Dartmouth, King Arthur cooking school -Search it out if you have to, don't overlook it..
I've always enjoyed eating here, friendly staff and tasty food. Quite a cozy atmosphere on the pub side and a nicer, slightly more formal atmosphere in the dining rooms. I do wish the beers rotated out more frequently, but they are always solid choices. Excellent cocktails.
I had the Hanger Steak au poivre and for dessert the panacotta…….both were fantastic. It is a very lovely restaurant but I think they could benefit if the music was more jazz and less 80’s bad dance music.
Great live jazz trio on Tuesday nights featuring an occasional guest vocals. Interesting, well prepared small plates on the menu, decent wine selection, several local beers on tap, inventive cocktails and friendly professional service all tucked into a classic New England style country setting. Semi-formal dining as well as a cozy bar area.
Enjoyed many facets about this place. Lovely rustic decor and an amazing staff. I would bump it to a 5 star, but the food was underwhelming and definitely could use some TLC from the fine folks in the kitchen. We received the Thai lettuce wraps, and it was clear that nobody bothered to check the product before selling it. Not only was there far too much fish sauce in the pork, it was soupy and quite frankly foul. My escargots were a classic preparation, but needed salt desperately. If one does not properly season escargot, and serves them with a tomato based sauce, the predominant taste becomes the slugginess (earth) of the snails, as opposed to their natural meaty bouquet of flavors. Looked lovely on the menu, was beautiful on the table, but was disappointing in my mouth. :/
Cold temps on the inside.Interior uninteresting. No knowledgeable wait staff. Our waiter was 17. Food was unseasoned. No bread for the table. Little love went into making the dishes.Almost as bad as Peyton place although the latter has charm …although poor cuisine. Never again!
I won't say that I didn't like it. It is ok to try French Cuisine once in a while. It was very loud in here. I personally don't like the bland food. Both the large dishes we ordered were very bland. Small plates were much better.
It's supposed to be more on the "high-end" side of restaurants. Definitely a solid place to go if you're not too picky, but if you're looking for an amazing meal, this place is a bit of a let down. The meatballs were decent, but definitely not cooked properly–in the sense that they were a bit dry and rubbery. The chowder lacked flavor, but was alright with some salt, which means the chef isn't quite an expert at making chowder, but he came close. The bruschetta, which all the waiters mispronounced, was very disappointing–the prime rib was a bit dry, and there was nothing else on it, so it was like dry shredded meat on a slice of bread, rather than actual bruschetta. The seafood casserole was lacking in flavor and not even close to being worth the $29 price. I'd be willing to pay about half the amount for the quality. If you're looking for a great meal, this is not the place. The atmosphere is nice, the servers are friendly and fast, but the chef is very disappointing. I do not really want to return to this place, as there are far superior restaurants in the area, as far as the food quality goes. All and all, it was a good time, but definitely not what I was expecting given its reputation.
Ordered the vegan option (risotto) which was incredibly bland. It feels like they are trying to be fancy but just do not have the food quality to back it up. It’s the second time I’ve been disappointed by the vegetarian option there. I would chalk it up to it just being a place that’s not meant for vegetarians but they make an effort to mark things on the menu and advertise vegan/“can be made vegan” options. Also, I tried the duck confit someone else ordered and it was similarly bland. They even messed up Brussels sprouts!
The steak was cold and tough. The mussels were tasteless. All of our meals were cold, possibly because they were short staffed. The waitress tried hard but we won't be back.
Admittedly, very unimpressed. I understand that it was Valentine's Day, but the menu was very over priced for the product that was turned out. I arrived for a 7:30 reservation and didn't leave until 10:10. Furthermore, everything that came from the kitchen was either luke warm or cold. This only exacerbated my frustration when a 200 dollar check came out. They also did this very weird thing where they had you pick two choices for each course; 4 total ( 2 app courses, an entree, and a dessert). I think this is why everything came out cold. Regardless, the whole experience has put me off from going back again anytime soon; certainly on a holiday at least.
