Paulista Brazilian Kitchen & Taproom is a well-regarded cafe known for its authentic Brazilian dishes and family-friendly atmosphere. Empanadas and Pão de Queijo are highly recommended. Some find the portion sizes small or some dishes lacking flavor.

Atmosphere was nice and pleasant, both food and beer were great! We had empanadas, pastries, sandwiches, steak all great!!
Food is pretty good - has some healthy dishes as well as heavier Brazilian staples. Great for breakfast, coffee and lunch. If I were living near, this would be my regular places to meet or work. Ample sitting both inside and outside - & service was great with smiles.
They have a very interesting collection from local breweries. Barman told us the owner is a beer enthusiast which explains…
Amazing blend of Brazilian (paulista) & Californian dishes for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Peaceful enough for work with lots of tables and plugs(!) as well as a great atmosphere for a nice conversation over beers or coffee anytime of the day! True paulista spirit!
We had dinner at Paulista recently, and it didn't disappoint. My son had the Sampa plate--a chef's kiss for a delicious beef-forward sandwich. My daughter and I shared an acai bowl--so healthful and tasty. We also had the chicken empanada--the green cilantro sauce was perfect. We also had a crispy chicken ball of fried goodness with a spicy orange sauce--yummo 🤩. We would be regulars if we lived in the neighborhood. One of the co-owners named Jesse was super helpful advising us about the beer collection. We will be back the next time we return!
The food is unique, tasty and well priced, though quite limited if you're seeking a full meal. But as an accompaniment to one of Paulistas 200+ beers, the food is the perfect foil. Good service from a team who knows their beer!
We made a reservation for last night (group of 12). Alex (Owner / Master Chef) was amazing over the phone and set up everything. Crew was so friendly as Brazilians do (including Alex); Food was really nice and worth your pennies, it's compatible with quality and type of food; Tap Beer with plenty options; Try the "exotic" Brazilian Foods like "Dadinho de Tapioca", "Feijoada", and "Bobo de Camarao";
Absolutely fantastic restaurant. The owner is incredibly passionate about his restaurant and it shows throughout his food and his staff. The ice cream is delicious, there is a huge variety of beer on tap, and of course there are tons of authentic Brazilian food.
Great space - big windows, lots of light, casual vibe. Love the menu - for something immediate you can get empanadas, acai bowls, or muffins but there's also a full menu with sandwiches, salads, and rice/bean/meat platters. Plus Mr. Dewey's cashew ice cream!
The bobó de camarão was very tasty. It was rich, creamy, and exactly how I thought it should be even though it was the first time I'd had the dish. The collards on the side were somehow tender yet bright green and fresh, extremely well prepared. To top it off, the price was reasonable (as far as prices for dinning out go these days), they have a nice neighborhood vibe, and they're dog-friendly 🐕 (though outdoor space is tight & Park Boulevard is pretty heavily traveled so might not be great for skidish dogs).
What can I say other than the food selection and the location and service was wonderful. The molted chocolate dessert is what will always bring me back with a delicious espresso. Perfect place to go and relax and enjoy a small meal or large meal or just for dessert.
I've never been to a Brazilian place like this! Had all kinds of fresh, amazing stuff to try and even a bar on the other side of the restaurant. Next time, I'm going to try the beer. This day, we just stopped by for a smoothie, but I ended up with food cause it just looked too yummy to pass up.
♿️Paulista Cafe has a wheelchair accessible seating, entrance and toilet. For entrances, there are no steps to enter, and a slight incline. Great family friendly restaurant. Our favorites include the empanadas and pao de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread), the Camaro na tijela (shrimp bowl), fried chicken sandwich and chicken salad. Acai bowls are great and great beer selection as well.
Had a great time here! Bartender folks were very friendly and helpful. Chicken strips were smaller than expected but way better than expected as well! ♥️ Fries were nice too. While it was surprisingly loud inside it was fun and perfect for the get together we had. I spent probably almost $60 on just beer, fries, and chicken strips but would do it again.
Neighborhood gem! Great place to meet. Great place to work if you want a nice cafe with good internet. Interesting, inventive food with healthy portions. Great beers of all kinds...something for all kinds of beer lovers.
I was there for the Copa America Brazil vs Uruguay game. Food was great. Beer options were great. Fast Service BUT…very uncomfortable chairs. Please get better chairs. I will not comeback to watch a game again unless better chairs are available.
Good ambience. Interesting concept of cafe/ restaurant/ bar. Their food game could be stronger with more offerings in mains, otherwise repeat visits for food might become boring. But still a compelling and diverse offering. Friendly service.
Great craft beer selection and some cans to go, food is good too. Super friendly staff, and a great place to do some work. This place was a haven for me when PG&E were shutting off power for days at a time in 2019. They were very supportive of all the people charging up, using WiFi, and if course having a bite to eat.
Neighborhood restaurant with a great vibe! The food is tasty and filling. Evenings have games and music.
I have been here 4 times. The avocado burgers is delicious, today I got carne la tijela. Sooo goood. Recommended.
Really cool place! Modern looking, surprisingly spacious, and really good Brazilian bites. I'm really glad I found this spot because I had been looking for a Brazilian cafe in Oakland for a few years and finally that kind of spot showed up. And even though I was just here for lunch, the beer selection is incredible. I'm definitely coming back one of these nights
Cute little place to have lunch on Park blvd. They have great seating by the huge open windows. I've had their cold brew which was good, I've also tried a couple of thei vegetarian empanadas which were also good. Wide variety of beer selection, good music, friendly staff.
Had the Acai, beignets, muffin and empanada. All superb! Fresh and delicious. Although they are a sweet indulgence of course. Very nice and open restaurant/cafe/bar with good atmosphere. They encourage you to work there. Friendly staff. Has a few Brasilian offerings but I didn't try any of the courses or entrees.
Whenever the real Brazilian saudade hits you, this is the best spot to come do something about it. Their food and drinks are the real thing, with great portions and good prices. They have a wide menu, and it's great for either just grabbing a coffee while wfh, or lunch/dinner with friends.
This neighborhood needed a place like this. The food served as part of their soft opening ing has been great. Beer selection is most excellent. Outdoor seating a plus as I can bring my dog. I be coming here regularly as I like drinking beer, sitting outside and eating good food with my dog.
Amazing food— had the brazilian burrito and açaí pancakes. The food came out fast and the presentation is so pretty. The atmosphere was not too loud so perfect for studying or a meeting with your team. The staff team is so friendly.
Went here to watch the last Warriors/Raptors game with some friends, and it was great (minus the Dubs loss)! The food is fantastic, the selection of beers is incredible, and the staff welcoming. This is great neighborhood spot for casual dining and a drink or Acai and fresh juice.
Great family food options along with wide range of beers. To go beers also available.
Paulista is amazing!!! This spot has one of the best beer selections in the Bay! If you're looking for a family friendly atmosphere with amazing food to pair with an amazing beer, well then I'll be seeing you at Paulista!
We are here way too often :) I love coming here, friendly staff, fabulous food and they have Piney the Elder on tap! I’m so glad this place took off, really the best restaurant to move in to this spot! They have a huge selection of beer on tap, maybe cider too - not sure. They also have a wide range of bottled beer to take home. We usually order empanadas but lately I’ve had the Morango salad added grilled chicken and avocado. My husband orders the burger with a side salad. They have many superb Brazilian dishes to choose from too. We bring our puppy with us and we sit outside at their street-side patio. Mondays are usually popping with quiz night. I know they’re also open for breakfast, I have ordered a latte to go, but yet to try breakfast. If you need to do laundry - fill up the washer down the street and come here for dinner! What a perfect combo.
Great food and atmosphere. I love to go here with a friend or by myself for food and s glass of wine. Also very family friendly.
Very cute Brazilian cafe. Great vegetarian and gluten free options. Cheese balls and veggie empanadas are a must when you visit!
Food was great flavor wise There were minor things like the biribiri being smaller than I expected, or the waffle being on the sweet side. Service was great. They were fast, conversational, and knew the menu well
Great place with three different but synergetic motifs going on Restaurant - wonderful Brazilian themed dishes, fresh, and authentic. Nice to get warm pão de queijo and well made a feijoada. The Maracujá (yellow passion fruit) juice was excellent and something not always easy to find in the Bay Area Beer bar / bottle shop - big selection of craft beers on tap or in the fridges Chill-Cafe- handful of people just enjoying some caffeinated beverages and working on their computers.
My favorite cafe in Oakland. I come here almost weekly now. Great selection of plates, pastels, bowls and beer. I recommend everything in their menu from the pão de queijo and queijo e presunto pastel to the feijoada and bobó de camarão. Their acaí bowls hit the spot on a hot day, salads are delicious, breakfast bowl amazing, coxinhas tasty and bite size, and they have a very large selection of beers on tap and in cans/bottles. I always leave with a few pastels to-go to munch on throughout the week. Can't recommend this place enough. Plenty of street parking too.
Raining Sunday, looking for something out of the ordinary and ended up here! The staff was nice enough to wipe down the seats on the patio since we brought our pups but Mother Nature had other plans and ended up getting it togo. Everything was so scrumptious and flavorful! It was as if getting a big warm hug :) Really enjoyed their Bobō mixed with the rice and pão de Queijo (cheese puff). Can't wait to be back to try the other goodies!
Excellent Brazilian cafe! Flavorful, fresh, and delicious cuisine! Lots of treats and pastries to enjoy. The empanadas were flaky, yet soft and packed with tasty delights. Mango toast was an inviting presentation with a surprising explosion of flavor at first bite! Ample seating, family friendly, and has a nice little patio outside to enjoy your meal al fresco. Owner Alex Yamamoto was very welcoming and courteous and took the time to talk with his patrons and ensure their meal and experience there was enjoyable. This place should definitely be put on any "foodies" bucket list. Bon Appetit!
What a surprising and delightful find. Not on our RADAR, but having missed a reservation elsewhere, we happened upon this place. Clean, spacious, and possessing a real family feel, with Borrow-and-play games and toys around to keep wigglers happy. Plenty of social space for the Single set, to with a Big screen TV and bar. The real treat, here was the food. Good, hearty portions, delivered fast. And the service was very friendly. Winner!
The atmosphere is nice, cozy and quiet. The food was pretty good. Their drinks although not outstanding, are above average. Their beer options are really good. One thing I didn't like was service. Not applicable to all employees, but many do not pay attention to customers or show as our of place. Then the bar tender was there to have a good time with a few customers and ignore the rest.
More often than I would expect, nobody is at the counter to take our order. Ive waited 5 minutes with no acknowledgement. Other times the front counter person is rude.
I've gone for bar trivia a few times. One of the co owners hosts and it's a nice way to hang out with friends. I haven't tried a lot of food options but they have a good selection. I will say it seems a little expensive with smaller portions (the side of fries was a little sad) but their homemade pastries and empanadas are delish!!
This place always seems to have a good selection of beers and they don't empty my wallet to have a few. The food menu is diverse and everything tastes exceptionally fresh. Atmosphere is fair. Place always feels cold to me maybe because of the concrete floors. Highly recommend going there!
My fiance eats here a lot as he works from home and it's close by. I've been there once and liked it overall. It was clean and beautiful. I actually struggled to find something on the menu (acai and coffee side, not full restaurant) for grab and go. I ordered a small smoothie and while it tasted fresh and natural, I didn't love the flavor. Fiance didn't love his either so we ended up switching. It's beautiful presentation and high quality but I haven't loved the flavor.
Great beer selection on tap and togo cans. Food is good, but I find it lacks a little extra flavor/kick that I would prefer.
Nice size place for small bites. No frills Brazilian cuisine. The food is decent for what it is.... a coffee shop style hang out. You order at a counter, find seating and they bring your order over to you. Food was on the expensive side. Small parking in the back and very limited metered street parking
Finally made it over to Paulista Brazilian Café, Kitchen & Taproom yesterday with my family after it being on our list for a while. Overall, really enjoyed it 👍 We brought my nieces along and really appreciated the expansive, completely separate kids menu — they love açaí bowls so that was a big win. Everyone seemed happy with their food too — we tried empanadas, cheese balls, a shrimp bowl, breakfast burrito, omelet, etc., and everything got positive reviews. I ordered the Floripa sandwich after an employee recommendation. Flavor was good, but honestly the portion was disappointing — the patty was basically slider-sized and noticeably smaller than the bun, so it didn’t feel very filling. Fries portion was on the smaller side too. After reading some other reviews, it seems like others have had similar feedback on sandwich portions, so hopefully that’s something they consider improving. That said, great beer selection (they even had Pliny the Younger on tap recently, so you know they take craft beer seriously). Lots of cans/bottles available to drink there or take home. Ambiance was nice, family-friendly, and I noticed a few people working on laptops — seems like a solid casual hang/work spot too. We’ll be back — just maybe not for a sandwich.
Paulista Café was a nice, spacious restaurant that offers both a restaurant and taproom. This experience I focused on the restaurant. The food came out fairly fast and the parking was easy, but could see where it may be hard if it was crazy busy. I ordered an iced vanilla late and Pão de Queijo (rice flour cheese balls) which was addicting! I’ve had them before, but I could eat those things all day. I also had the Feijoada (black bean meat stew with sides of jasmine rice, farofa, orange slices, and sliced collards). The stew was tasty and flavorful and the farofa added a nice bite to it. The collard greens and orange slices really brightened the palette, which was heavy other wise.
Having returned from my trip to Colombia I was looking forward to sinking my fangs into a pan de bono or pao de queso. Excited I dashed in right as the door opened on a Saturday morning and got the vegetarian options for brunch - the cheesy bread, two empanadas, and the breakfast burrito with the request to remove the bacon. The paos, while chewy, were quite eggy in their taste. I found it ambiguous in flavor. I wanted to love them, but it wasn't working as well. The same went with the empanadas. They were flaky on the outside but lacked a nice flavor profile on the inside. When the burrito finally came out I dug in. The hot sauce really amplified things until I felt weirded out. I spat out a piece of meat. It turned out either the restaurant forgot to mention there was sausage in the meal, or the person preparing the meal decided to sub the bacon with sausage. They were nice enough to switch it out to a vegetarian version for no charge, but in the time and age and in this part of the world, one cannot afford to be this lackadaisical about food substitutions. The place is charming and bright and is definitely a magnet for more hangouts.
Super cute and inviting Brazilian eatery with loads of options for every palette! We came in as vegetarians and happily found empanadas, omelettes and a burrito that could be made vegetarian. The empanadas we found to be lacking in flavor but the burrito and pao de queijo were enjoyable. They also seem to have a full coffee and liquor/wine/beer bar. 250+ beers ! I’d come back to try their wine and beer menu.
This was our first time at Paulista. The restaurant is a counter service, so you order and then bring a number to our table. We ordered 3 different dishes, 2 of which I tried. Steak Sandwich - Delicious steak and side salad, however portion was on smaller side. Side salad dressing was superb. Fried Chicken Bowl - This bowl had veggies, avocado, crispy fried chicken, rice or spring mix, and feta. This bowl was amazing mixed up with a dash of their homemade hot sauce. Overall, prices are on the higher side - but that’s expected for the Bay Area and what tasted like quality food. A great spot if you’re looking for a healthy and quick lunch!
Give them points for authenticity and unique dishes on the menu. We visited on a late afternoon for a quick snack. The toasts were very tasty. Savory empanadas were lacking some basic seasoning. But the guava is a must try. The alcoholic drink definitely had a good kick to it. It was quiet and not crowded. We were attended to quickly. Our items came out fast. This place gets great light and the location is perfect. All in all, I'd visit again and try out some different items on the menu.
Had a muffin, sure others may like it, but not my thing. Syrupy sweet studd inside, not for me. And they forgot to bring bit to me, finally after 15 minutes I asked for it, but had to go and eat it in car. What a mess. Coffee wasn't bad
Vegetarian dish was super basic, black beens, collard greens, orange slices and some ground up starch. Ice tea and 2 beignets for $30. Way over priced for what it was. I can make that at home for $5 minus the beignets. Guy who took my order was not friendly in the least. Kinda cold and his mind was elsewhere.
We’ve been going here since it opened. Unfortunately, the food was much better early on, seems that they’ve compromised on ingredients and authenticity. The beer and wine selections are impressive. However, even the cheese puffs and empanadas were not yummy. I think they would have more loyal customers if they improved on the food, and perhaps change the menu up periodically.
Only been once but we ordered the steak and onions that was recommended as one of the best items on the menu and a couple empanadas. All were pretty below average and for a Brazilian place I'd expect both the steak and empanadas to be good. Great beer selection and a nice atmosphere keep the overall rating respectable, but maybe I'll have to try some other menu items to find something good.
expansive menu and open in the evening. able to get coffee, dessert, a smoothie, empanadas, a salad, beer, or wine all at 7pm! came for espresso, fruit, and an empanada. interior is sterile cafe style, no art or music, bummer because there is no brazilian culture coming through. hard chairs and big cheap tables. a bit pricey but on par for the area. didn't expect to see so many kids here that made it loud. i might come back for a coffee & food option in the area open in the evening as that's hard to find.espresso is not good but to be fair it takes a lot of attention to pull a good tasting shot so extensive training/attention probably not available for the coffee program.
Paulista Café in Oakland is a great spot with delicious Brazilian cheese bread, fresh pastries, açaí bowls, and solid coffee. The quality is consistently good, but I’ve noticed that although they open at 8 AM, pastries often aren’t out and ready until later, which can be frustrating for morning commuters. Having items ready at opening could boost sales, especially with a bus stop right outside. A bit more attention to morning prep would make this place truly perfect.
Would I go back: Likely not unless someone begged me to go. Only reason is because it’s a little pricy for the portion size. Food: Feijoada: 3/5 - Decent and consistent in taste but it left me hungry after the meal. You get all the fixings but it definitely wasn’t enough for me. Service: 3/5 - Friendly staff. Ambiance: 4/5 - The space is pretty big and it’s kid friendly. A casual spot in the neighborhood.
I’ve been here a couple of times and each time I come, the price always shocks me. I recently ordered the avocado toast and for the price I paid, it was not much food. I also ordered a mimosa which cost me $8 (yes, you read that correctly)! The toast I got was not well seasoned and the tomato/mozzarella salad was gone in 2 bites. The photos should speak to the size of the plates you will receive. The staff is kind which is great and they have outdoor seating.
I want to like this place, and clearly some people do. However after my last two visits, I don’t think I’ll come back. On both visits the food was delayed. The first time by more than 30 minutes; the second time was better at about 25 minutes. I don’t expect quick service as it’s not a fast food place. But considering my order and that the food arrived cold, I can’t like it. The fires in both cases were colder than ambient temperature! The beers are good. I don’t think I’ll come back. I’d rather spend my money elsewhere
Come on, I have some positive observations and others not so much. I'll start with the bad ones. This is the second time I've been to this place and both times I ordered Feijoada. However, they serve you black beans with two pieces of rib and cabbage and say that this is feijoada. (I'm Brazilian and I know feijoada well and I can guarantee that it's not feijoada) this is just black beans and rice. the place has more people using the Wi-Fi than eating, it looks like an internet café. However, not all is lost. the environment is good, clean and organized. the service is good. We just need to really know better what a feijoada is
I am Brazilian and I really wanted to like this place, but I won't be coming back. The coxinhas are delicious and very overpriced at $10 for four very mini coxinhas. The beef empanada was meh, the spinach one I didn't like at all and my mocha didn't taste like chocolate at all and the espresso was bitter, machine needs to be calibrated. The service was lack luster, you order through the table and the person dropped off the food without a word.
Paulista was a staple for my family and I but something has changed and the service has gone drastically down hill. In the past year we’ve had multiple issues with our food taking 35-45 minutes to come out and then the order being wrong on top of that. With two little kids in tow and the order consisting of kids beans and rice and chicken sandwich there’s no reason it should take so long other than short staffed kitchen or prioritizing take out orders over in house orders. I’ve tried to express my concerns and have had to get up and ask for our order and every time it’s “we had an unexpected rush”. If you’re always unprepared for a rush yet take out orders are still going out then something is off. I’ve been a very consistent, loyal paulista patron for years and years but for the price I can’t justify the risk of having two very upset little kids asking over and over where the food is. We won’t be going back which is really a shame.
Do you want a real Brazilian experience? So don’t go to this restaurant. The feijoada is not a real feijoada, it’s just black beans with one slice of meat inside and the rice is not the Brazilian rice. My last hope was the dessert, but it was so deceiving. I ordered the pudim, but it’s not the real Brazilian pudim. I was craving for some Brazilian food, will have to try another place unfortunately. Note that the food is not bad, it’s just not truly Brazilian.
Worst empanadas I have had. I sampled 3 and they where all bad. The fillings where flavorless and super dry. The dough was somehow super tough and hard to chew. They are also charging table service prices but you have to stand in line and order at a counter. Skip it. Oh and they also somehow allow dogs inside? I think that violates a health code. I count 3 dogs at tables inside that are clearly not service animals.
Paulista has been on my list of places to try as it's not far from me and I'm a huge fan of Brazilian food. When you arrive you order at the counter and they bring the food to you. We ordered the pizza pastel, yucca fries, a coconut based shrimp stew dish, feijoada, Guarana, and a smoothie which came to about $90 after tip. The pizza pastel was good flavor wise but not a pastel and more like an empanada, the yucca fries were also good. However, our main dishes lacked flavor, which was a surprise as I've always had such flavorful dishes at every Brazilian restaurant I've been to. The feijoada was the worst I've had ever! It was vegetarian which I didn't order to begin with. There was no flavor, the rice was bland, and the yucca flour was also bland and lacked any flavor. Minus the girl at the counter who took our order, the service we received was fine. Sadly, I don't think I will be returning to this place and will stick with my go-to tried and true Brazilian restaurant in the Bay Area that never fails.
Watered down juice, flavorless beans, tiny portions, lukewarm, overpriced food. Vegetarian option was just frozen vegetables and canned heart of palm. If you are looking for flavorful international cuisine, this is not it.
Every time I've eaten at this place it has been a great disappointment. The food is overpriced, mediocre at best, not to say bad. I know Brazilian food and this is a pale imitation. The empanadas are overcooked and dry. I know what brazilian empanadas taste like. I am from South America. I suspect pople can't tell the difference. It's a shame because those of us who live in the neighborhood looked forward to a decent place to eat. Good luck, they seem to be doing very well with wine and beer.
Completely forgot our order and after waiting for an hour, we finally left. We'd like this place to be good but it's consistently unorganized and mismanaged.
Ordered at 3:11pm and waited more than 20 minutes to receive our 2 coffees because “ order didn’t print”. Then they ran out of the pal de queijo so that was another 7min. Waiting for 30min for two drinks and some cheese balls is unacceptable. Update: and the way she looked at me and dropped off the cheese balls at the table you’d think I owe her money.
Do not order delivery!! I ordered delivery and was given the worst avocado toast i’ve ever eaten. There was only a tiny bit of avocado on very cheap and soggy bread. The coffee was terrible, the smoothie was watered down and bland. I’m not sure if they have a different delivery menu, but I will never order (or go there) again.
