Short version: This place is still awesome. Ignore the 3.9 stars and go there...even though they removed the salad bar. Longer version: I've been coming to Steak Loft for so many years, I don't even remember how I first learned of it. We recently planned on over-nighting in Mystic for my birthday (in the sub-freezing January 2026 temps), so just for giggles I checked the recent Google Reviews and was surprised to see only a 3.9 out of 5. Regardless, we decided to go there anyway for nostalgic reasons and were delighted with how great everything was; the ambiance, the drinks and the steaks were all fantastic. Our wait person, Lindsey was also super-nice and great to speak with. As for the mediocre reviews? After reading through them again, the "themes" I'm noting seem to focus on the dimly-lit atmosphere (we call it "warm and cozy"...love it!), the absence of the old salad bar (which...let's face it...needed to retire when COVID came to town) or the price...which is likely because of tourists blowing through town who are expecting the equivalent of a Ground Round or "99" restaurant. It's not; it's a legit steak place and the quality and portions well justify the prices which I feel are pretty reasonable. You won't regret it!

Ive been all over the eastern half of the US from Chicago to Atlanta and up to Maine. This is my absolute favorite steak house. The ratio of quality to cost per pound is unparalleled. Every steak I've had here is cut perfect and cooked exactly how I asked.

Great food and wonderful staff. I love the bar here and the band was fantastic! It was Amy Winehouse’s birthday and I enjoyed the tribute song. My steak was amazing! Mashed potatoes are creamy and delicious. Great drink selection and great service.

This place will defiantly be on our list of spots we visit every year. Fresh delicious food and a great price. For the price you pay you get a lot of food. I got the fish and chips. For starters the fish was huge (our waitress said they buy the fish fresh every day). The breading was crispy and tasty. It also came with a cup of clam chowder. My wife got the steak and chicken and it looked and tasted great and the steak was cooked perfectly. Definitely would highly recommend it here!

Went for lunch. Steak cooked correctly, food was pretty good. It was pricey but their menu is online so it wasn’t a surprise. It’s dark inside but feels perfectly appropriate for a steakhouse.

Nice setting. You get to choose a formal setting in the main dining area or a more relaxed setting by the bar. Very generous servings. I couldn't finish my salad. Had the steak and crab cakes with the side being baked potato. I forgot to take a picture of the main course as I was eager to dive in. The meal was delicious and the waitress was excellent. I would definitely recommend it if you are visiting Groton

This is a wonderful place and I’m glad it’s still there. Great food, service and value. You can get a full meal with a great steak for $35 here. Super friendly staff, too.

Great food and drink were very flavorful. Slow service to start but got much better once a waiter was assigned, very friendly and on top of things. Mushrooms were absolutely the best that we have ever had, I even ate them as a non mushroom eater. Twice baked potato was just okay.

Nice restaurant with good vibe and nice decorations. Waitress/Bartender was real good. Had a good cheesecake, strong drinks. Could have had more bacon on the wedge salad and what bacon there was, wasn't crunchy.

Stacy is an excellent waitress very friendly. The food was so good, cooked just the way we like it. The salad bar has been closed for some time but the salad that comes with the meal is super tasty. The atmosphere was quiet because we sat in the back room. Great visit and can't wait to go back when we are in Mystic.

Was called to Mystic for a family emergency! Stayed across the street at the Hyatt Place! Was in the mood for a steak! Sat at the bar! Had a delightful dinner! Ordered the sirloin steak! Was cooked perfectly! Bartender was super nice! Came with a giant salad! That could have been the whole meal! They have five giant dinner salads to choose from! The wedge salad with blue cheese and bacon were delicious! Really nice dinner!

This place brings me a fair bit of nostalgia, but it is excellent in every way and I have nothing but good things to say. The bar area is quiet during the week but has all the warmth of a tavern from an older time. The food is quite nice, don't forget that this place has really good salads with entrées, I mean really good. They recommend medium rare on their steaks because they aren't savages and the sauces available are excellent.

I had the pleasure of experiencing The Steak Loft in Olde Mistick Village during a charity function for #LightTheWorld, and I cannot recommend this establishment enough. The staff and management were an absolute delight to work with—they truly went above and beyond to ensure everything ran smoothly. The food was nothing short of spectacular! From the succulent crab cakes to the perfectly seasoned teriyaki chicken, every dish was bursting with flavor and prepared to perfection. However, what really stood out to me was the relationship we built with the management and staff. Their genuine hospitality and care made the entire experience unforgettable. Thank you, Steak Loft, for making our event extraordinary! Warm regards, Dennis Schleicher, YouTuber with over 90K subscribers and content creator on Instagram.

The food prices were on par with the area. Staff was attentive. Very pleasant. The food itself was delicious, very good portion sizes.

Went here for my birthday and the food was good. While they don't have the salad bar back yet they let you pick out any salad with an entree. The steak was cooked perfectly and their homemade dressing is amazing.

Visited for the first time on Valentine’s day last night and we were so glad we chose to try this place! So much food and our meals were great. We had the stuffed shrimp and the steak with sides of French onion soup and salad. I was so surprised at how good the house salad was! Our server Kate was so friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back!

Our favorite must visit restaurant whenever we come to Mystic. Cozy atmosphere. As of June 2022, the salad bar is no longer available as we were told it never came back from covid, but they give you any salad choice with your entree. And the salad servings are decent size. We first visited on a hunch for a Valentine's day meal about 5 years ago and was impressed enough to return multiple times. In fact, on one of our latest visits we ate here two nights in a row. Interesting simulated rustic decor in some areas of the restaurant while other areas could use an update. Stonington baked scallops (about $37) were very good as is the teriyaki flank steak which the server told us they marinate overnight to lock in the flavor. There is a full service bar with quick bites menu available and there is often live entertainment. We do miss the salad bar though and all the offerings that came with it. We were told it likely won't return this summer, as there are still staffing shortages, like every other business.. For three adults and one child, 2 qb plates (appetizers), 3 entrees, no alcoholic beverages or deserts was about $200, including tip. The portions are deceiving. They look small but fill you up quickly. Look forward to visiting again.

Absolutely hands down the best steak & sides myself and my wife have ever had. Perfectly cooked and tasted amazing! We will definitely be making the 2.5 hour trip to eat here again!

We had dinner for the first time at the recommendation of my parents. Everything was excellent other than the long wait for the dining room. This was only because they had a big party who rented out the bar area. The service and food far outweighed the wait. The salads were fresh - fresh leaf greens and crisp veggies with the best homemade blue cheese dressing. Excellent juicy burgers, and love the homemade potato chip style fries. They take the time to make ingredients from scratch and you can taste the difference. We will be back!

Sprawling restaurant offers private rooms off of the main bar with live music. Other side is for quieter dining. Great staff. Great food. No complaints.

We had such a wonderful experience at Steakloft! The food was absolutely amazing—perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and so satisfying. What made the evening even more special was our waitress Faith. She was so kind and attentive, and I really appreciated how seriously she took my gluten-free needs. She double-checked everything with the kitchen and made me feel completely at ease, which is not always the case when dining out. Her thoughtful care, along with the delicious meal, made the night perfect. Highly recommend Steakloft for both the food and the outstanding service!

To whom it may concern, I am writing to express my sincere appreciation for the exceptional dining experience my family and I had today at the Steak Loft in Mystic, CT. Our waiter, Doug, truly made our visit memorable. He was not only funny and hardworking but also spoke highly of the Steak Loft and even shared some family recipes. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish, from the French onion soup and wedge salads to the amazing steaks and desserts. It was also wonderful to find a delicious gluten-free dessert option for my daughter. The prices, food, and service were all excellent. We will definitely be making the 50-mile drive back soon and will be sure to ask for Doug. This is truly a five-star restaurant! Sincerely, Jay Richardson

Dark and quiet. Excellent food and wait staff. Best steak I've had in years, cut and cooked perfectly. Excellent.

Wow, it’s been awhile since we have been here. I ordered the soup of the day. It was a street corn chowder, the best ever. Then the meatballs so tender then fried outside delicious. My husband ordered the chili, loved it! He also, ordered the sliced garlic steak … perfection! We sat at the bar, great service such teamwork. Love the place, we will be back.

Hosted a large holiday party at the Steak Loft and can’t recommend it more. The space was perfect for our group and Casey, Debbie, Faith and Angel managed everything like pros. Thank you!

Been dying to try this place and I can say I will give them another try. We walked in about an hour til close; it was nice and quiet. We got to sit where we wanted and the waitress ( all 3 ) was very attentive. The food from my opinion was a 7/10. The salad was amazing but the steak could have a bit of flavor. The chicken sandwich was good not dry at all. I really appreciate how attentive the ladies were; keep up the great work!!!

It was our first time at this restaurant, please please update your lighting!! Doesn't have to be bright, but it was even hard to read the menu during the day. We ordered fish and chips (amazing) and sirloin, salad, French onion soup, and mashed potatoes. My steak wasnt cooked too correct temp, and was a little bland, but was still decent. Possibly you should order it medium rare if you want it medium cuz it was overcooked. Everything else was good minus the fact that the server forgot my soup, i received it after my meal and the soup was comped. I will return to try the happy hour items.

The waitress was very polite & friendly. Since I like my steak well done, I couldn't eat it. It was medium rare but other then that, the shrimps and stuffed baked potato was delicious. The other plates were delicious also.

They have a small selection of local craft beers. Their happy hour specials allow the opportunity to sample their tap list and menu.

Wanted to take my boyfriend here since he's never eaten here and I haven't been in many years. We called ahead because my boyfriend in a power wheelchair and we wanted to make sure we could get proper seating. We talked to a Nigel and he was very accommodating and greeted us when we arrived. We ordered our meals and I like you get a salad bar with your meal as one of your sides. I had tenderloin tips with a mushroom gravy and my boyfriend had top sirloin. Very good but came out before our sides came out. So we ate our main part then the sides came. Had a good waitress but she was very busy and couldn't really get refills nor a box or bill without waiting for a bit. Everything great until we go to leave and we are parked in handicapped in front of the restaurant and someone is parked diagonally behind us with their car running in the middle of the road with no occupant. We put the ramp down and my boyfriend couldn't get into the van. Of course it starts to rain. I ran inside and the hostess came out and was super apologetic and got right on it. Took the license plate and another staff person came out and told us how sorry she was and how this wasn't right and would fix it as quickly as they could locate the person. Finally the person comes out and says" oops, sorry." Seriously no care that we waited in the rain, couldn't get in our van and couldn't leave. Seriously a dumbfounding moment but the restaurant staff were on top of that so we were greatful.

Upscale place to go to dinner for special occasions or if you just ball like that. Dinner prices are steep and food portions small. But the food is great! Best salad bar. Good place to go out to lunch, entrees are priced reasonably and include salad bar. Overall a solid 4 star in my eyes

Very friendly service. The quality of the salad bar has remained at a high level for years. The fish was average, but the sides and chowder were very good. Easy parking, and great proximity to the shops in Mystic Village

Love the Ambiance, its like entering a leather store and smelling leather, but here its wood. Beautiful wood smell. I sat at the bar and was tended by two fantastic bartenders ... i fell in Love. Anyway... start off with the Mystic Martini. That will get your sniffer running .... mines told me to get what my neighbor was eating... Sliced Garlic Steak!!!! Maravilloso. Falta el queso Manchego y la compañia de @denishernandez!!! #denishernandez Then the Zonin Prosecco, just because... then jazz was on the air with a 3,000 year old saxophone player (played more like a Berkeley enthusiastic Masters Degree, 23 yrs old). I wanted to take him home. But his wife didn't give permission. Me encanto !! A must visit!

Haven't been her in probably 20 years…place never changes, sill the same 70’s steakhouse vibe. Food was good, better than expected actually. Waitstaff were great. However, the bill was a bit of a surprise (well, more than a bit). They chrarged for a seltzer water! Who does that? *Updated* Well, now I see some other restaurants charge as well. There must be tariffs on seltzer.

Food was good but I thought prices were a bit high. I had the rib eye steak which was flavorful. Entrees included a side plus either soup or salad.

Nachos and Caesar salad were delicious. Our two steaks not so much. Both of us ordered well done both came back pink. Husband was ok with his even though it was bright pink. They reheated my steak until it was no longer pink. Didn't realize a teriyaki steak is just steak with teriyaki sauce to dip in. Loaded baked potatoes were dry and lacking flavor. Picture is of hubby's "well done" steak.

My expectations for a barn themed steakhouse are high, so I may have set myself up for disappointment. Sat at the bar and am the space is really cool. It is in the largest part of the building and is wide open. Bar itself is unique and eye catching. I’d go back just for the atmosphere. Bartender gave me menus but then took quite a while to tame my order. Upon placing my order, someone from the kitchen left to milk a cow to begin making the Gorgonzola cheese for my steak. French onion soup was delicious and did not disappoint. What was disappointing was unrolling cheap flatware from a paper napkin. Again, I have high expectations, but cannot justify “cheap” for a $50 dinner. I was also disappointed waiting so long for a medium rare steak while while the curds drained to make the Gorgonzola. This would’ve been a great opportunity to provide something to nosh on; even a roll would’ve been an improvement. Allas my steak arrived nicely presented with someone’s thumb print dried to the plate which meant I could begin eating. It was piled high with onion-Gorgonzola topping (guess they made extra cheese) which was generous, but I do still want to taste my steak at Steak Loft and the taste of onion was unrecognizable in the mix. Cook on steak was good, but trying to cut it with a knife I think was bought from a restaurant auction was unpleasant. Had a stuffed potato for a side which was average. I told the bartender I would take another beer in a few minutes but that never happened.

Went here to eat dinner after a business meeting cause we had heard alot about it. Well, our waitress disappeared so my husband flagged down another one and we were told she went home. My hubby and I looked at each other in disbelief. The salad bar is small and okay and our steaks were cooked good. I expected more flavor and a better quality of meat though at those prices.

Giving this restaurant a three instead of a five really pains me as, growing up, it was my favorite place to eat. Unfortunately, our last trip there wasn't up to where their usual standards used to be. This review is from Spring of '21. My main issue was with the staff and some confusing communication. I called to order takeout and explained that I had the promotional offer listed on their website. The women who took my order noted that and said to just bring the coupon on went I went to pick it up and they would take it off the bill. When I went in to pick up the food and pay, I was told by the server and her supervisor that I could not use it on takeout. I showed her the coupon, which did not have any language whatsoever about only being for dine-in/days of the week/any type of restrictions, and I also mentioned that the person on the phone said it would be fine. They "compromised" and offered a lower percentage off, which I appreciate, but I was still left frustrated with the lack of communication. I understand the issues with staffing and prices due to Covid, but perhaps remove any offers if you're just going to say you are unable to honor them. Speaking about the food, I ordered the steak, and it was still as good as I remember. Juicy and fully of flavor and the baked potato was delicious. My mom ordered the broiled seafood melody and said the lobster sauce should have come in a bucket because it was so good but that the seafood was just okay. I do think that that's a meal that is most likely not as good for takeout as it would be if we ordered dine-in. This was before the salad bar had come back and we realized that the salad bar has really been carrying the experience for us over the past 20+ years. I'd go back with the salad bar to give them another chance just since I have had so many great meals here, but I'm not totally optimistic that it will be as good as it once was.

I ordered the steak and marinated chicken. The chicken was perfect and the steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare, but the steak was very bland. The meal came with a salad and a side. Bartender and wait staff were very professional and polite. Overall experience was great I just expected more.

I had high hopes for this dinner and it was the worst one on our entire 11 day trip. When you walk in, it has a very musty smell. The waitress we had was the only thing good about the place. Extremely efficient and very attentive. My husband got a flat bread which he said was good and my daughter got the pork sliders which she liked. One of my sons got a steak...absolutely NO seasoning and tasted aweful. Second son got chicken, no seasoning and tasted aweful. I got some scallops with lobster stuff on top. The top was burnt and very salty, and the scallops were in a heap of butter. Not a good dish at all. I ate like 3 or 4 bites and ended up with stomach issues before I left the restaurant. I would not recommend this place.

Went there for lunch and ordered a buffalo chicken wrap. Some pieces of chicken were so tough as to be inedible. Ate what I could and after showed the waitress and suggested she let the kitchen know. We watched her toss my dish with subject pieces of chicken in the skullery bin under the bar. She never went to the kitchen that we saw, and just gave us our check, no comp, no apology. Not sure if this is indicative of how food is prepared or if good kitchen help is hard to find on a Labor Day weekend, but we won't be apt to dine there again.

We had a reservation for 7:30 but ended up getting there at 7:15 and they were able to take us right away which was great. Our whole meal for 6 people took an hour and 45 minutes. We waited over an hour for our food just for it to come out undercooked and bland. Someone in our party is celiac so she ordered a salad with steak - no croutons. When she got the salad it had croutons. She sent it back and they brought another out very quickly compared to the rest of our meal. The steak on this salad was raw like the chef put it on the grill for 2 seconds, which would explain why it came out so fast. She had originally asked for it medium. Another person in our party asked for a well done burger. It came out bright pink. The rest of the food was just bland. No flavor and cooked enough to be edible but not how we asked for it. And all the meat was cold but the baked potatoes were hot. The rolls and caesar salad were amazing though. It was a very disappointing dinner especially since we live an hour and a half away so we had to go home hungry. They were nice enough to take the severely undercooked burger and raw steak salad off our bill however the waitress got defensive when we mentioned to her the salad being wrong for the 2nd time which was a little off putting however she was very pleasant for the other parts of our dinner.

J
Jackie Tarves

Waitress was excellent but as for the restaurant itself poor. For a steak restaurant it ran out of rib eye , my Serlion and shrimp cocktail on a holiday weekend that is unacceptable they should have planned better as they still had one more day left on the weekend

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the stench. It smelled really bad. The table was sticky and gross. The atmosphere is pretty dark and bleak. The food was disgusting. We started with a salad that had wet brown parts. The salad was old. The bread rolls were really good. The only thing that was good. We had the stuffed chicken and it was still pink on the inside. It tasted gross. The potato was ok. The dessert was some type of carmelized apple, grape and other stuff in a cup which was nothing special. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I pray the senior center folks from the group that I was with do not get sick. It was extremely disappointing.

Today we went to celebrate our wedding for lunch at 12. We saw all the reviews and thought a great choice.. wrong. We were escorted to the bar area and it was very dark and I asked to be seated with more lighted and as told no. The waitress was friendly but the food was bland , I mean ZERO seasoning .. I know it’s lunch time but stuffed mushrooms no seasoning beef tips just grilled charred no seasoning and my husbands burger no seasoning bland. We asked to leave and the waitress had to see our plates were still full with only a bite taken and never asks us how we liked it. It was to bad we took our food and left. We won’t be going back. We used a gift card we got for our wedding with $30 on it still and gave it to the couple next to us because we weren’t coming back.

I went there last Monday and it was an awful experience. My wife had the scallops and they were spoiled. She got deadly sick 6 hours later in the middle of the night. My granddaughter ordered a medium well steak which came out bloody rare. Tried to flag down the waitress to send it back but she ignored us for 20 minutes. We finally had to walk through the restaurant to hunt for her down. She did take if off the bill. We called the restaurant the next day to notify them of the bad spoiled scallops but we were told the manager was not in. We left .multiple messages over the next few days and finally got the General Manager and she was aggressive and rude. We'll never go back there. It's to bad, ten years ago it was a pretty good place.
