I stumbled in this amazing French Cafe after a night out in Manhattan. I had a delicious frisée salad with oeuf and lardons. Then followed with steak frites. A glass of red and I felt I was back in France. Classic! Perfectly cooked steak. The service was friendly and unassuming. There is no need for theatrics when the food is so good. Super authentic vibes and experience. Sorry, no photo of the steak, I was too excited to dig in. I can’t wait to go back.
The food & service has never disappointed me here. Carmen was an absolute sweetheart checking on us time to time, making sure we have everything we need. This is my go to if I’m in the area. Coincidentally it’s winter Restaurant week and it’s just as impeccable!
Still one of the best brunch places. My brunch favorites are French Toast and Eggs Copenhagen. Their café au lait in a bowl is great too. They do a mean steak au poivre and steak tartare for dinner too. One wish: bring back the tripes Lyonnaise and the Boudin Blanc on the regular menu. This restaurant has shown remarkable consistency over the years including at least one member of the staff (Solange) who still recognizes us from the time our daughter, now 25, was still a toddler. I'd like to commend L'Express for bringing back French Toast and the Benedicts, including Eggs Copenhagen, to their weekday breakfast menu (please also add muesli and/or granola with fresh berries). Sadly but understandably since Covid it is no longer open 24 hours. I wish they would start breakfast at 8 am instead of 9 am. They also have a great selection of Belgian beers and a nice wine selection. And they have great specials during Restaurant Week, such as pork Schnitzel.
Had a wonderful time on a very rainy night. Our server, Carmen took great care of us, very sweet, and attentive. The steak frites never miss!!
I can’t say enough good things about L’Express. The food is out of this world, you can tell that it’s made with so much care. They’re open late (which means you can get incredible after hours French food) and it doesn’t matter what time you come it’s always fresh and delicious. Beyond the food though the service is what will keep you coming back. Carmen is the most kind, attentive server. She really made us feel so taken care of, like we were the only ones in the room. The drinks were chefs kiss, so well balanced. Highly recommend!!!! Must try.
What an AWESOME meal we had at L' Express! We are a party of 4 and we just wandered in on a Wednesday night and were lucky enough that they had a table for us. The waiter and all the staff were incredibly nice! We had a lovely table by the window and every dish that came out was delicious starting with the best bread and butter. The house wine in the carafe was just right too. We then between the four of us ordered the escargot, the artichoke hearts appetizer and for our entrees we had steak frites, roasted chicken, salad nicoise and a very tasty hamburger. The wait staff was very attentive as was the manager who more than once came over to check that everything was to our liking. We finished our meal by sharing the tastiest dense chocolate cake served with ice cream. I highly recommend a meal at L'Express! It was a truly delightful and delicious dining experience!
Vibe on point. Incredible beef bourguignon - perfectly tender and intensely flavorful. Don't miss the tarte tatin, which is soft and buttery with rich apple flavor and a dense creme fraiche that pairs perfectly. Lentil soup was very good too! Looking forward to returning for drinks and late night bites
My husband and I had the best dinner and service at L’Express on Tuesday, 1/20/26. Josh was our server and he was attentive to my husband’s food allergies, gracious, patient and anxious to please. All of our food choices were high quality and cooked to perfection! I had the arugula salad to start, branzino as my entree and ended with raspberry panacotta. My husband had the lardon salad, steak frites as his entree and creme caramel for dessert. The steak frites was a genuine NY Strip and was ordered medium rare and came out exactly medium rare. Truly a wonderful dining experience and we look forward to returning soon!
This place is so cozy and welcoming, with really great food. I stopped by after a doctor’s appointment and was extremely hungry, and it was exactly what I needed. Maritza was our server, and she was warm, and attentive. I ordered the omelette du jour with a side salad, and my partner ordered the same but with egg whites. They were very accommodating and happy to add extra eggs to our order. The omelette was full of flavor and absolutely delicious. The service was excellent, and she made the experience even better. We will definitely be coming back!
Today I came to this restaurant and from the beginning the restaurant has a great vibe. Nice, cozy and warm place to come and enjoy with friends and family. Carmen was the best! She was friendly and helped explaining anything I didn’t understand in the menu. Will definitely come again!
We had an amazing experience at this restaurant! German and Esteban treated my family and me incredibly well from the moment we arrived. Their attention, kindness, and professionalism truly stood out and made us feel very welcome. The food was excellent—everything was flavorful, well-prepared, and served perfectly. The attention to detail and overall service were on point. We will definitely be coming back and highly recommend this place!
I had a peaceful Christmas lunch here in 2025. Their Christmas menu was only for dinner but there were a lot of Christmasy dishes on their regular menu for lunch. The smoked salmon starter was nice with a pan-Asian dressing. The organic roast chicken was out of this world! I highly recommend it as one of the restaurant’s piece de la resistance plates. I know my French cuisine very well, after living in France for 5 years. The service: other than forgetting to give me my change, was pretty ok but the red haired lady waitress was kinda odd and really annoying, to be quite honest. Other than that, I highly recommend this spot for excellent quality food, hearty, authentic French cuisine, reasonable prices, the cosy, chic ambience, and a good Christmasy holiday atmosphere - especially if you are away from your own Christmas kitchen at the end of the year like I was. And of course, if you are missing France and its gloriously wonderful cuisine at this time of year. Bon appetite! Happy holidays!
I love visiting this place when I’m in NYC! I’ve never had a bad meal here. I highly recommend any duck confit dish, it’s always prepared wonderfully with a crispy sear. Other French staples (frog legs, escargot, soup) have always been tasty as well! Nice selection of wines by the glass to top things off. Definitely worth a visit!
My favorite place for steak tartar! Even my 10 year old child gets this steak tartar and she loves it. Escargot is amazing, too. For me it’s the ultimate NYC dining experience. I love the vibe of this place. It’s good for any occasion: a casual getting together with a friend or a birthday celebration. We’ve been coming here for about 25 years and it never fails. Really good food with consistently good quality. Our waitress Jenny was wonderful this evening! Thanks to all who keeps this place running well!
Stumbled upon this lively restaurant while walking to Union Square. We had a fabulous lunch served by Maritza and the whole experience was unforgettable. First the food- bread was excellent, water glass constantly refreshed……I had quiche of the day with salad, and hubby had the Spanish omelette. We both scraped our plates clean it was so freakin delicious. Both were loaded with veggies, and seasoned lightly to perfection. I opted for a glass of wine and when I asked our server about the grape of wine, she checked with the bartender and also went online to their website to give me the exact blend. Much more info than I expected for sure. It was also delicious… then panna cotta for dessert…. Heavenly! Truly I think this is the kind of place you can order anything and not be disappointed. Staff is welcoming, friendly and helpful. This is the kind of place I love to support. Thank you Maritza for the excellent experience!
Everyone is so sweet here and the service is phenomenal!! Samantha greeted us at the door and helped us to our table kindly. Carmen serviced us amazingly. Franco made some killer drinks. Herman was great and so was Michael. Overall, the staff make this place feel so comfortable and lovely. Additionally, the food is phenomenal!
Absolutely incredible experience at L’Express! The food was outstanding — every dish was perfectly prepared and full of flavor. The drinks were just as impressive, beautifully balanced and delicious. The ambiance was exactly what you’d hope for: lively yet cozy, with that classic New York charm that makes you want to stay for hours. A special shoutout to our server, German, whose exceptional attention and warmth made the evening even better. He was attentive without being intrusive and made sure everything was perfect from start to finish. Can’t wait to come back — L’Express truly delivers on every level!
Loved waitress Carmen almost as much as the croque monsieur. We had several tasty espresso martinis. Great location for a ladies gossip night under dim lighting, hard to identify faces which is good for this type of discussion with the tea we're dropping. Bathrooms very nice. Thank you Carmen!!!!
It’s the only place in NYC that you feel that you are in a fine dinning experience after midnight, the servers are really cool. German twice took care of me. Nice! Escargot OUI chef… ask for the bread… grilled artichokes with Cesar’s dressing. WOW! 🤩 just order a REAL!!’ Expresso Martini while you write a review .
Went to L’express for dinner with friends who were visiting from overseas and excited to experience French cuisine in NYC. I tried items off their limited time Forgotten Foods Festival menu. The chef curated an incredible menu that really brought out the French flavors in every bite. The Potage Garbure and the blanquette de cochon were cooked to perfection. The service was also unmatched as all our needs were met. Not to mention the cocktails were out of this world. Would totally recommend the Sazerac and the Apple Martini!
Great service in a very French vibe. The food was incredibly well prepared and the drinks were phenomenal. The lamb burger was so good and the tuna was deftly seared. They are accommodating with allergens but it is a shared kitchen. Definitely enjoyed our meal and the quality of service.

Might as well be in Paris. Charming place on Park/19 & 20. Great service, delicious food, reasonable prices. We will go back.
What a cool spot in Union Square. Made reservations for dinner on a Saturday night and were promptly sat. Service was friendly and we were un-rushed. Underrated wine list that has some value spots.…
TLDR: Chill diner-type spot with nice decor, and great desserts. Fries and creme brulee hit the spot, and the flourless cake was really rich and enjoyable (imo).
Shared lunch with a friend on a Wednesday afternoon. Felt like I was inside a French Bistro in Paris. Roomy, comfortable and not noisy. The service was very warm and friendly. They did not rush us in the least and just like Europe you are not getting the check until you ask for it. I had the Onion Soup and Turkey Club sandwich. They said it came with house cured Turkey. Hmm definitely not cut from the bird directly. The fries not quite crisp and the soup not piping hot. The Espresso was very bitter. So the food was fine but the atmosphere and service was the standouts. I would go back again so I would also recommend it to you.

Not a fan, service was slow and food was quite mediocre. If you're looking for a great French place, better off skipping this place. You can tell the escargot is frozen as it lacks flavor.
