Very, very delicious! I was quite surprised with just how good it was for the price. Me and my friend were both surprised that they didn't have a better rating on Google. Will be coming back again!
Amazing staff, amazing food and the best hot sauce in Portland Tx. The inside of the restaurant in so well decorated. You don't just absorb the flavors of the food but the entire restaurant itself.
Not the easiest place to find but so worth the time to look for it! My family is never disappointed when we eat here!! This is one of the top Mexican restaurants in this area of Texas! Don't let the exterior fool you, you are entering a place of true deliciousness! Sorry for all the exclamation points, but we love eating here!
The $10 "Mind Blowing " margarita is horrible !!! It's all coconut water and only one shot .. We complained even sent it back & still charged for it. Reason for 5 star's, salsa is bad ass & so is the food. Next time I'll stick to beer.
Service was amazing! All the staff were friendly and the food was really good! We will be coming back here during our stay and any other times we visit.
The food is always good. Sometimes service is not so hot (when they have staff shortage), but overall fine place for decent food that doesn't break the bank. (They need a new queso recipe... Their's is lousy.)
We are new to the area and just picked this off of Google. The service was great, our glasses were never empty. The food was good and the plates were full. We will be back and we will recommend it to other.
Grew up as a child and father would always take us here for breakfast. Nothing but great memories from this place. I encourage anyone who wants a family friendly setting and wants to enjoy homemade Mexican cuisine-to visit the restaurant. I’ve recently gone vegan and the waitress “Romy” kindly abliged to my request when i ordered papas rancheras. It was a great day from there on out. If you’re stopping by Portland to visit for the first time or if you’re visiting family and friends, don’t forget to make a stop at La Iguana. Breakfast hits the spot at this establishment. ✌🏼✌🏼
Amazing waitress very attentive and the salsa was outstanding everything came out so fresh we had a party size of 30+ and they were able to accommodate us with no issues! Definitely will be eating here again!
Great food and very friendly staff
This place was absolutely beautiful in every way. I got their signature plate in which they named after the restaurant. You can choose several type of meat including the traditional Asada for that dish. Their potions are gigantic so if you are hungry, this is definitely the place for you. Don't be shy to ask for a Togo box. There is a strong and traditional Hispanic atomoshpere here. From the decorations and art, to the hospitality and great quality of food. And the prices are affordable for everyone. So if you are looking for a good hot Mexican meal and want to feel like you are some place in Mexico, you should absolutely consider eating here.
So glad I didn't read some of the reviews before I ate here. This place was great! Quickly seated, pleasant atmosphere, awesome service, great food! I will return when I am in the area again.
Great service awesome food. A wonderful place to unwind, get a great meal, and spend time with friends!!
Friendly staff. Delicious food (even the rice and beans). Juicy shredded chicken tacos that I never tire of. Good margaritas. They even had live music last Friday night. Fun atmosphere.
Very cozy and inviting atmosphere, with the absolute friendliest staff. The food was dynamite, and had a very home-cooked taste to it. It was so good I had to come back and try their breakfast before I returned home to Fort Worth.
Food was amazing! Everything was fresh & hot. Waitress was extremely helpful with suggestions on what to get. We have been several times since.
Was pleasantly surprised as its out of the way location and plain exterior had me expecting average at best. The interior is clean and well furnished. The menu selection is huge and the food was excellent. We were a party of three eating three different selections and we all agree on the quality of the food and the more than expected quantity. In addition the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Finally, the price was VERY reasonable, and far less than I would have paid in one of the ubiquitous chain restaurants for far less satisfaction. I will eat here anytime I'm in the area.
Was looking for something a little different from all the seafood restaurants. Saw the reviews on here and decided to give it a try. The service was awesome! And out waitress (I didn't catch her name) was so sweet and really sweet with our little. The food was great! And definitely worth the money!
Been going there for years and never disappointed. All plates including breakfast are great. Service is just as good. Prices are good. It's off the beaten path but worth the drive. Are there once with 6 adults and bill was only $ 60.00.
Great drinks, great food. Me and my neighbor go here regularly now. Was deffinatly skeptical at first based off reviews but, besides staff training and being a tad slow it's been a great expierence. Only negative thing I'd have to say is the dust is very excessive on the decor. I'm tempted to bring a swiffer at my next visit. But the tables and eating areas are fairly kept up with. Most of the staff has been friendly, and attentive, even with training. Will deffinatly be back.
From the start... everything was WONDERFUL! The House Margaritas are Delicious!, I prefer the Frozen though 😉. And another Fabulous In House made....O the Salsa! It's absolutely Yummy! The dinner was so filling! We had an AWESOME Waiter! Our entire experience from beginning to end was TERRIFIC! So, when in Portland, give them a try!
Food was fantastic! The prices were amazing as well. Food came out super quickly and tasted great.
This is by far one of the best places I have ever eaten! We came here on vacation and chose this place and it was AMAZING!!!! We will come here every time we come back to CC, the atmosphere and the service was the best as well our waiter was amazing and it was all around just amazing!
This out of the way place is very good and definitely worth finding. We will be going back.
Food was great they even had all day breakfast that's was a super plus. When you have a 2 yr old that's only eats breakfast.
Great food, wonderful margaritas,Happy hour.
Love there breakfast and lunch.. it just perfect.
Best Margaritas and cheese enchiladas! Service superb! Great prices.
It is a nice quiet and cozy place with GREAT food and excellent service. Our waitress was fantastic. Highly recommend! The amount of food for the price was over the top. The fajitas burrito is huge with lots of chili and cheese.
Hands down, the best food we have had since being in Portland. Great service, relaxed atmosphere and the best food. The homemade chips were so good and the salsa on point. The fajitas were the most tender and flavorful I've ever had! Definitely the highlight of our dining experience in Portland. And...we didn't have to pay a small fortune to have a great dinner!
I love this place! It’s been a few years but the lovely atmosphere and the delicious food is stellar as always. The restaurant (and bathroom) was clean and filled with the wonderful smells of great Mexican food. We were seated and served quickly. Our server, Dulcima, was friendly and courteous. The chips (tasted homemade and fried to perfection) and the salsa (definitely homemade and will light you up) were great. I had the cheese enchilada plate with corn tortillas on the side. Every bite was delicious. The corn tortillas are made here and are thick and wonderful. There are taquerias on every corner in South Texas and most are good enough but La Iguana is so far superior to anywhere else. It is such a comfortable homestyle place and the staff made me feel welcome and happy.
House made corn tortillas are special. Really thick and about the same diameter as the flour tortillas. I highly recommend trying the corn tortillas. They're not thin like store bought ones, although they still may break. I think the food is a great value (5 stars). I had the #15 barbacoa plate. I liked how the meat wasn't super oily like typical Mexican restaurants where the fat is oozing out of the meat. Still very tender and moist. I made my tacos using extra chip salsa. Friendly staff.
Great little Mexican restaurant! Good service and tasty food. We had breakfast. The menu is varied and extensive. They have great seating and an outdoor patio. The decor is very interesting. Lots to see and very pleasant. They also have a full bar, so stop by for some good eats and a margarita!
The food was delicious but the tortillas were like store- bought. I had to wait for them for a while after I got my plate, and when I finally got them, they were a real disappointment. Other then that, the service was good.
Food was actually pretty good this morning. Service was good. Most breakfast plates only come with beans and not served with potatoes and I would have given it a five-star. Not bad for a Mexican restaurant in Portland.
They have great margauritas on the rocks. service is good. The food is tasty, and chips and salsa are fantastic. Some nights though, they have a keyboardist and the atmosphere is not as enjoyable.
I don't remember the name or number of the plate I ordered but it offered 2 cheese enchiladas, a beef fajita (or chicken, if preferred) taco with grilled bell pepper and onion, and rice & beans. There was an awesome comino flavor in chili gravy on enchiladas. The refried beans were very good and the Spanish rice was moist with a delicious flavor. The beef fajitas were slightly overcooked. All in allwas the best Mexican food I've had in quite a while. The service was also great.
Have lots of good memories of this place. The verdes enchiladas were my personal favorite dish here. Also enjoyed morning pancakes and eggs with a cup of coffee.
Very friendly staff and all was clean and nicely decorated. Good was good unexpected up charges but reasonable for how much food came on al lecart plate 2 items. Beer was way overpriced 5.50 for large domestic beer should b about 4. Pleasant relaxed dining experience. Thx
For the most part, their services good. Employees are friendly. Last time I visited the woman at the front who seems to be management, part owner, dressed very nicely, it was very abrupt with me. I was placing an order and she didn't give me time to finish. She is probably having a bad day and I understand that but still. She was nice afterwards after I mentioned to her that she had cut me off while I was speaking. Overall though I've had good experiences in there.
Haven’t tried La Iguana in a long time and decided to swing in for breakfast tacos. Hostess said I could sit anywhere so I found myself a table and was promptly given a menu. I already knew what I wanted so I ordered one bacon, egg, bean and cheese along with a chorizo, egg, bean and cheese and a sweet tea to wash it down with. It took maybe 10 minutes to get my food. The homemade flour tortillas were spot on, they definitely didn’t skimp out on the size which I loved. Bacon was in strips compared to being mixed in with egg but still a very good taco. They have a red and green salsa, the green had perfect amount of spice as the red had a too much of a tomato taste for me. As of this posting it is my new favorite taco spot in Portland, shout out to Leon for being an excellent server and always checking in on me. I’ll definitely be back to try lunch/dinner options.
Mmmm. Very good Molcajete! Would have enjoyed it more if my server had more attentive and brought more than 2 tortillas. So close to five star but the boy left me hanging with letting my drink run dry multiple times and didn't check on me after I started eating. Didn't even ask if I wanted dessert! Good thing the food was good!
We have been here a few times and I have tried the fajitas, a burrito, and a quesadilla. All were great. The queso is very bad and I wouldn't recommend that. The service was okay but I have had 3 different servers tell me that they wouldn't know what to recommend. The atmosphere is pretty fun and you feel like it is an authentic Mexican restaurant.
We ate here last week. It used to be great food. Its hit and miss now mostly miss. I'll skip details on the burned food we sent back. Hot sauce is still amazing so I'm giving 3 stars.
Margaritas are just as bad as hard knocks. Food is usually decent so I gave 3 stars. Honestly if you find yourself in Portland go ahead and drive to Ingleside and go to City Cafe.
It wasn't bad but it could be better. Beans and rice were good as were free chips and salsa. Margarita didn't seem like there was any alcohol in it at all lol..and for $10. Oof.
Environment is nice. The waitress was sweet to us, but the food we ordered was no bueno. We ordered the migas plate and it had no flavor to us. At first he he didnt allow the waitress to adjust the check which was at her request (we didnt ask for any discounts). He told her no and then when checking out he quickly decided to adjust it. In the end the manager made it right by discounting the food, but not before telling us why the food was bland. Which was because we asked for no peppers or onions. So instead of just quickly apologizeing for the food he bascially told us that we were the reason the food wasnt good and how to avoid it next time we eat there. To say the least peppers nor onions would have fixed how dry the eggs were or the greasy chips.
The food was good. The waitress was attentive. The food took WAY TOO LONG. We had already had our chips & salsa, my friend had 2 refills & still no food. I was very agitated about that! I was ready to walk out but I hate being that person. My friend's dish looked like it had been sitting under a heating lamp. Beans & rice were dry & the crispy taco was unappealing.
Menus are old & pictures of food look bland. No Happy Hour. Did not order, did not stay.
Nothing else open on a Sunday evening. I called in a small order and they said 10 minutes. Took twenty minutes after arrival. They forgot my chips and salsa which I payed for and didn’t give me tortillas for the combo plate! They weren’t terribly busy. I would say 25% capacity or less!
My wife and I usually eat here to get away from life and the stress. We come for the street tacos. They never fail us on their flavors. The service is always on point. Edit: My previous review was from 3 years ago. I believe they changed their staff and cook. Management as well. The tacos aren't the same. Our meals were kind of bland. We went around 1p.m. I give it a 3.
I'm a fanactic about Carne Guisada. I basically base my experience with two items: Chips= Great Carne Guisada = Make smaller pieces and needs to be more tender.
Food is acceptable if you are hungry and have no way to get anywhere else, though an uncooked Cup-o-Noodles or bag of stale Doritos would be a much better choice. Menu selection is comparable to any other local Tex-Mex. Portions are fair but not filling. The food generally has no distinct flavor from each other. Chips were stale, barbacoa was extra greasy, lengua tacos were tough, menudo is horrible (wish I had never ordered that), pastor is over-spiced, greasy trimmings. Service from the waitress was OK for the most part. The kid at the register , though, seemed like he was being forced to be there. Did not say "Hello, how was the food" or anything like that. In fact, he said nothing and if I had not been looking at the register, I would not have known the total of the bill. I do not recommend this place at all. Maybe my experience was isolated; for the sake of those that go here, I hope so.
Way overpriced. Skinny tacos, not that flavorful and they'll get your order wrong. But service was super nice.
The rating of the food isn't really fair. During peak hours, it's decent if you don't mind the wait and rude servers. However there're only two words I could use to describe the restaurant when there are less than 20 people there. Totally gross. Food was cold in the middle, I sent it back, it was still cold in the middle. Got food poisoning. Service was terrible. It was like everyone there suddenly had forgotten they were at work.
Went to get a me thing to eat and had the worst experience food wise. We've eaten here before and never had a complaint till today. My husband ordered a caldo de res and it was nothing but the last of the soup, no meat at all nor vegetables. We asked for hand made corn tortillas and got flour tortillas that were reheated about 10 times....um just gross looking that he didn't even eat it. I ordered a burrito of fajita and yes where's the beef ugh. It was more tortilla and a lot of beans after I said easy on beans, and I and till had to oat for it. Soup was removed from ticket but I still had to pay for a horrible burrito. I don't know if I will be eating here again. I really see it as having poor management because they only had one waiter and we didn't get our food till after an hour of being there. Poor lady that was left in charge was stressing a lot and it wasn't even her fault that cooks sucked and that service sucked.
Ok been here over an hour. Right now I'm outside having a smoke. Hoping our food will be done soon? Brought the fajitas with no tortillas 😲and don't order a margarita because you have to remind them that you did at least twice. Anyway the food came and we loaded it directly into a to-go container, pitiful
Fajita meat was dry and chewy.. no flavor. Avocado costs $1.10 per slice.. seriously. Hostess is do rude! We will never go back. Much better food / service other places!
If Gracie isn’t your server get up and leave. Gracie is the sweetest most hard working woman in that restaurant, and always gives the heat service. The reason for the one star is because another waitress commented that the dish washer was here when I walked through the door and laughed about it. I thought that was completely disrespectful. Was going to get her name but don’t care to know. She’s usually behind the bar.
We went for the high reviews. Food was all precooked. Not authentic Mexican Food. Sadly the first sign was not having any Mexican flavored waters.😔 if you like very Americanized Mexican food this is your cup of tea. Staff was not to attentive. Womens bathroom smelled like an old sanitary pad.
Absolutely will not go back I got charged $20 for 4 tocos and had to chase down our waiter to pay I will not go back by the way the tocos was horrible I guess the cook was having a bad day gas station tocos was better and cheaper
Lost a customer I will never go back. I asked for avocado on my chicken salad. The plate I received had 4 small slices of avocado.. I was fine with that till they charged me as if I order guacamole I didn’t receive that. I was told by manager or owner I should of told them before I ate my food (the waitress agreed that it was a small portion) also if I didn’t like it call the cops he wasn’t changing my price. Poor customer service
There cheese enchiladas were not good we ordered 3 plates there beans and rice are ok but there enchiladas we didn't like it . The flour tortillas didn't look or tastes homemade but there corn was homemade they tasted ok .Ordered 2 chesse quesadills and our toddler's didn't like it . I think the only think that's good there is there burrito my husband said it was good. We spent almost $125.00 a lot there and we still had to buy something to eat after we left there. Not going there again so think twice before you go there. We should've tooking pictures 😞 But the waitress was nice .
OMG... what happened? They messed up our order and the food was cold. Even the plate was cold. The food left a bad taste in our mouths. My son said it tasted almost chemical. I am at home now and my stomach is churning. I pray that we do not get sick. If we do, I will be back to post more. We have been eating here for years. For a while it was bad and we quit. For the past year there food had been fairly good but tonight... yuck!!!!! I am big on tipping and tipped tonight. But I usually tip a lot more than is required. I will not be going back for a long time... if I go back at all. We love good Mexican food but there was not any to be found there tonight.
Ordered fajitas because fajitas are ALWAYS good right?? WRONG. This food was so incredibly bland. Like it had been seasoned by a stereotypical white person bland. Everything lacked flavor. And the tortillas were sub par. I love Mexican food but this place is a big NO for me. Hoping I can season my leftovers and salvage the meat.
Place was great years ago. Now. Rude management. Waitress was terible! Food tasted. Like and had the warmth of microwaved dinner. The drinks were substandard. Gone down hill! Peps is a way better choice . In fact, Taco bell is a far better choice!
1. The bathrooms are FILTHY. I refused to sit on the toilet. 2. Bacon smelled and tasted rancid. 3. Potatoes soaked in grease and cold. 4. Waffles smelled like they had been cooked on an unclean surface. 5. Waitress either inexperienced or just didn't care. 6. What is on the menu is what you get, NO SUBSTITUTIONS allowed. 7. Decorations, cash register VERY dusty. 8. Should have driven past when no cars in parking lot. 9. Feeling nauseous so pretty sure the food that I did eat there is going to come back up. DISGUSTING.
This place is not real mexican food no flavor, I order fajita plate with chiken fajita the food was warm almost cold they not serve tortilla. How you can eat that Mexican plate with not freaking tortillas the waitres never comeback this is not the place is you want to eat Mexican food, and I never get salsa no waitres so I have to use the salsa for the chips.
Everything hanging as decor is dusty. Don't ask for anything other than EXACTLY what is on menu because (what I was told) it is not programmed on cash register. Bacon was just a day or so from going bad almost rubbery. So out of a 10.00 plate I ate 2 pancakes. Bathrooms were filthy. Never again.
Did not like thier barbque taco
Horrible carne guisada tacos. Even worse barbacoa tacos. Couldn't get the taste out of my mouth. My water had something floating in it. Husbands eggs were rubbery. Just not good food. So sad. Won't ever go back.
Very rude manager by the name of Maglena, every customer had got their food before us, the mimosa had a piece of lint in the drink, we asked for another they told us they didn’t see anything in it, mind you we had took one sip out of it and even told them to make it weaker so we weren’t trying to get anything free like they were implying then when we complained about us not receiving our food she kept saying we were there after a party of 7, which all of them got there food, very rude and racist people there highly do not recommend and they need to wash their dishes better
Service was not good food was disgusting. I ordered shrimp green enchiladas... sauce looked old and tasted salty and sour as hell. All these youngster don't know what there doing can't even take an order right. They Didnt know what a michelada was or an horchata.. and got my mans plate wrong.... our waiter started cursing at her co-workers and they sushed her .. anyways never again will I go back. All out food was not good.... sorry kids I'm giving you 1 star, If I could I would give yall zero.... stay in school. Peace
Food had no flavor, barbacoa very dry and the homemade corn tortilla was thick and broke when folded and no flavor either. The refried bean's was tasteless it needed salt(flavor with pepper also. If it wasn't for the green salsa to add flavor we would have left early. We plan not to return but we hope you can make adjustments to improve to improve the taste.
Worst restaurant in Portland hands down. Cheap Tortillas aren’t homemade, they are super thin and horrible. Food had zero flavor! bland and simply pitiful. Won’t come again. They even charge for ranchero sauce as a topping because the food was so bland! Save urself the horrible experience and go to Sabor Maya!
We are very disappointed about La Iguana Restaurant in Portland TX. Our plates included mexican beans and they had gone bad. The spanish rice tasted like they been made a week ago. My plate included 1 crispy taco, 1 chalupa and 1 enchilada with spanish rice and beans. Out of all my plate I could only eat the enchilada cuz the rest was bad. My brothers plate was 3 flautas with rice and beans. He only ate 1 flauta cuz they tasted bad, the oil they used was old and beef inside the flauta was so burnt it was black. I don't recommend this place at all.
Food is good but management lacks customer service skills. Upon receiving our food, I asked if they could bring us some salsa, our server brought us a squeeze bottle of both red and green salsas. My husband started to use the red salsa, the lid popped off and next thing you know he was drenched, his food was drenched, the table was drenched with salsa. He excused himself and left the restaurant to go home, leaving his uneaten, salsa filled plate behind. After several minutes, I got up went to the manager and asked her for some napkins, without looking up, she handed me some cocktail napkins. I cleaned up as best as I could, when our waitress finally stopped to check on us I explained what happened, she just looked at me and walked off. The manager stopped by my table and told me she could offer me a discount, she took his plate off the bill. Never said I am sorry, can I make you a to go plate, nothing. I know accidents happen but an.... I don't give ---- attitude from management, SHAME ON YOU! I will never go back
I had an incredibly disappointing experience at this restaurant. I waited nearly an hour for my food, only to find out that the delay was due to the only cook going on break. Even a simple Dr Pepper took almost the same amount of time to arrive. When the food finally came, it didn't get much better. The rice was chewy, the fajitas were just okay, and the shrimp cocktail was essentially tomato juice with shrimp floating in it. Overall, a frustrating and unsatisfying visit.
I got over charged ridiculously $35 dollars for 3 shrimp chalupas a side of charro beans and a half and half tea and lemonade smh when brought up to the lady at the register she said the waitress said she told me there would be an extra charge and I was not informed......I figured there would be an up charge but $30 for 3 store bought shell chalupas was crazy I told her that shrimp is $10 a pound and she could buy 3 pounds with what she was charging me for the 6 shrimp they put on my chalupas smh
A plate of PURE hot grease and Chipotle seasoning came out after ordering a simple cheese enchilada ...One bite nearly chocked me with the spice..ask to return it and was told since I took one bite that I would be charged for it..OMG..HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE..everything else was just as bad..Never Again!
My wife and I haven't been here in a while so we decided to to come back since our last visit was amazing. This time we were very disappointed with the flavor of the food. My wife ordered Mole Enchiladas and the mole sauce was very chalky and looked like and tasted like it was uncooked. My Chicken fajita Salad Boul had very little flavor and my side order of rice also had very little flavor. Did this place change owners? It's just not the same anymore.
This was my first time back here since apparently management, staff and cook change. Highlyyyyy disappointed. We sat for nearly an hour waiting for food and drinks took nearly 20 minutes, waitress was doing her best but didnt seem to have support from staff and was taking the hits for the cook, no queso at dinner time at all. My family's food came out before mine and in the end I didn't eat. I ordered based on the picture on the menu and received something completely different, what looked like a one serving burrito came out as a 3 person smashed and fried Chimichanga. The Burria tacos came with no cheese, dry and no dip, when the dip was requested it came out as badly seasoned water. Will not return. Would give 0 stars if I could.
Ordered chicken fajitas nachos, how can you jack up nachos, they did. So bad taking home to stray cat. Or my pups. The pineapple mimosa was good.
First time here, certainly the last time here. Got enchilada’s with charro beans, charro beans looked like swamp water so I didn’t even eat it. Enchiladas were super bland with zero filling, rice was super mushy. Also got chalupas with asada meat, asada meat tasted super cheap and old. Only ate half of a chalupa and my stomach started to turn so bad, didn’t even finish my plate nor wanted to take the rest home. Sweet tea wasn’t even sweet and tasted watered down. Not worth the money I spent here. Go somewhere better in corpus
