Omg, we feel in love with this place!!!!!! Everything was perfect. The ambiance was so low key, which was great. The food was wonderful!!!! The live show was everything!!!!
Their food and service is amazing, and they are not overpriced like so many restaurants are now. The ambiance is fun and festive with Christmas decor and music. Their vegetarian chili is delicious, although very spicy. I wish it was not quite as spicy but it still has a great flavor. The french fries are fried perfectly - not greasy or soggy at all. Their mac and cheese is delicious and creamy. The fried okra is also perfectly fried - not wet or greasy. The cobb salad is delicious and they actually give you a decent amount of avocado and boiled eggs, unlike some restaurants who put barely any on the salad and then overprice it. And their jalapeno corn muffins are amazing! It has been a long time since I have been to a restaurant like this where everything we ordered is so delicious. Thank you Tolbert’s!
Great local historical joint. Got to try the donkey tails and chili. Great live music seven nights a week with different groups for different tastes. Warning: Music gets very loud. Bar service can be a little slow.
We visited Tolbert's a couple of weeks ago and had a wonderful experience. Even though there was a long line to be seated, the front desk was fantastic and accommodated our group of four (including two kids) very quickly. The ambiance is great—I loved the low lighting and the music. Our host was incredibly kind and took the time to answer all of our questions. As for the food: The Chili: They are famous for it, and it definitely lived up to the hype! Tacos: Very tasty and priced appropriately. Speed: Everything came out in a very reasonable amount of time, and the quality was top-notch. It’s a perfect spot for a family dinner with a cool atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tolbert’s Restaurant & Chili Parlor is as Texas as it gets! From the moment you walk in, the atmosphere is warm, fun, and full of character. The chili is absolutely legendary—rich, bold, and packed with flavor in every bite. You can tell they take real pride in their recipes. The food across the menu is consistently great, whether you’re going for comfort classics or Tex-Mex favorites. The staff is friendly, attentive, and makes you feel right at home. This is the kind of place you bring friends, family, and anyone who wants an authentic Texas dining experience. Tolbert’s never disappoints!
Stopped in for my first TX style chili, aka bowl of red. I was able to order guacamole for only $9 and it came with chips and salsa. The chili had some interesting spices. I thought at first it would be plain without tomatoes and other stuff, oh boy was I wrong. It has a lot of interesting flavors layered and the meat was very tender. The salsa tasted homemade and also had an interesting flavor profile. The waiter was friendly and attentive, even though he had a number of tables. Glad I stopped in, memorable visit and I got to tick one of my Texas firsts off the list.
For 40 years I’ve been living a lie. I thought I knew something about chili, I’ve been complimented on, and proud of my chili. Heck I’ve won chili cookoffs!!! I WAS NOT PREPARED! So I went to Tolberts in Grapevine TX, the original chili competition official, who literally wrote the book on Texas Red! I sat down ordered a bowl and after the first bite I knew I had never made a bowl of chili in my whole life! If you are ever in Dallas or FT worth drive over to Grapevine, and get real chili. In a word, if I can only choose one….. spectacular! To the owner Kathleen, you’re doing something special!
Tolberts is known for their chili. It’s one of my favorite items off their great selection of southern cuisine. Bar offers a selection of local beers and cocktails. Fun atmosphere. Prices are reasonable. Staff is terrific. This night we had cheese quesadillas and a key lime martini. Located off Main Street in Grapevine Texas. Nightly live music makes for a fun night out. Also a good place for lunch and shopping in historic downtown Grapevine. You will know you’re in Texas when you step into Tolberts!
Walking in my family and I were already enamored with this spot. We had an incredible time at Tolbert’s Restaurant & Chili Parlor! The chili was absolutely fantastic—rich, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. The ambiance and vibe were warm, lively, and family-friendly. Our kids had a great time, and my husband and I were truly impressed. Nancy, our waitress was friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu. It was a top-notch dining experience from start to finish. We’ll definitely be coming back!
Texas bucket list spot! Big bar with lots of drink options. High ceilings give this place a unique feel. Chili was good and it is filling! The Super Bowl of chili is definitely a meal for a regular person. Had enough heat to let you know it’s a true texas chili without making you uncomfortable. Tots were good but couldn’t finish as I was too full from the chili.
I have heard about Tolbert’s forever and passed by many times, but never ventured in. What a mistake that was. I was somehow expecting some kind of a little fast food style restaurant like the famous chili chain in Cincinnati. This is nothing like that. It is a full bar and restaurant with lots of charm, plenty of photos around, and most important of all, excellent chili. Our service was good on this early afternoon visit, but then there were not many people there. Drink orders were taken and brought right away, and food orders soon followed. Being at a famous chili parlor, I had to order chili. I went for the Texas Red because it is what chili is supposed to be – no beans. Flavor and consistency were excellent. It did not need any additional seasoning or heat intensification of any kind. I am a former chili judge at the Terlingua Chili Cookoff in Texas and at the Antelope Valley Chili Festival in California in the 1980s, and Tolbert’s stands up to the winners of either of those. Fried Okra on the side was basic fried okra. My wife had a taco salad. Generous serving, crisp bowl and wonderful flavor to the taco meat/chili on it. If something chili related is not your taste, the menu is quite large with most other bar food items. Tolbert’s is a winner.
So… this place! Great Texas ambience, FOOD COULD NOT BE BETTER! Kennedy was an amazing server! I am so glad we found this little gem on a COLD Dallas night. Red chili, chili verde, chicken fry, homemade peach cobbler, Gary P Nunn playing subtly in the background. I felt like I was back in the Hill Country. This place makes me proud to be a Texan! Well… more than I was already, anyway! 😂 Thank you Tolbert’s! You’ve got fans from the Panhandle! 🙏🙏
Soooo much loved this place! Perfect for my solo dining experiences while traveling to new places 🙂 I entered quite last on a Tuesdtnight attracted by the special burger of the day that was written on the outside board. Once in, I asked some questions to understand if it was a good option for me. The waiter (Cole if I remember correctly?) first tried to understand my taste and then gently suggested a couple of options that he believed would have satisfied my desire. And got it right! The burger was super tasty, sumptuous. And it felt as Texan as I could have imagined. The fries on the side were also super tasty and very well cooked. After the first beer I wanted to try something different. He offered to bring me 3 samples to choose the right one. I loved that in both cases the waiter served me the food saying a warm "welcome to Texas". He also spent time talking with me at the end. I appreciated that he dedicated equivalent time to 2 kids in the restaurant that seemed to adore him. I didn't have any space left for dessert or I would have certainly ordered one. The interior of the place was very nice. Welcoming & comforting. The band was at their second night on that stage and was quite decent, certainly engaging and seemed to have a lot of fun. Nice surprise at the end: an incredibly cheap bill compared to any other place I have been recently in Dallas or another large city like New Orleans. I recommended the place to all of my colleagues!
Our Tolbert's experience was great - excellent table service, delicious food with pleny of choices on the menu - three of us had a bowl of their Original Texas Red Chili and I had the Terlingua Burger which had some of Texas Red inside it on the burger and came with tots and several onion rings. Good beer choices too. Atmosphere is great inside the restaurant located in Grapevine. Would definitely return!
Always great food service ambiance and cocktails. This time I tried the green chile chicken chili and omg it was delicious. The Mexican Candy martini mmmmmm superbly delicious.

Neat little place! I’ve been here twice, the first time I had ordered their burger with the chili on it. The flavor and add-ons were good but the burger itself was very dry. The second visit I had a “Bowl of Red” and it’s genuinely some of the best chili I’ve had. Stick with the chili, that’s what they’re known for!
Tolbert's is just good home cooking. I had the chicken fried steak with french fries, gravy, green beans. The green beans lacked flavor but everything else was extremely good. Another person at my table had their fish and chips, and she said that was some of the best she's ever had. It is a fun place to go with live music and lots of different draft beers. Tolbert is, of course, known for its chili. They have Texas style chili ( no beans ), chili with beans and Frito pie. It is worth going there just to try their chili.
Last stop on my Texas trip and had to get some authentic Texas chili. The food was very good. Our server Noah was very nice and attentive. We were definitely unaware that they had live music at dinner time. I'm sure that it was posted but I missed it. The music was fine, it was just very loud and made it hard to hear each other.
Me and a friend found ourselves with a night in Dallas to kill after our connecting flight got delayed. After a long day of travel, we were looking for an authentic and classic Texas restaurant to dine at. Tolbert’s came highly recommended, so we decided to give it a shot. Negatives out of the way first. The food left something to be desired. We started with the bean and cheese nachos, which were great. For our main course, no, I didn’t try the world famous chili they’re known for, but I did get the sour cream chicken enchiladas and my friend got the standard burger on the menu. He said his burger checked all the boxes. While my enchiladas were great, the side of beans and rice were disappointing. The “beans” were more of a black paste, and the rice seemed to be from a box and not the classic red rice you’d expect with this kind of dish. That being said, this establishment more than makes up for it in atmosphere. Situated on the historic grapevine of the DFW area, this restaurant is well decorated and extremely inviting. We sat down at a cozy table with live music playing, which brought some magic to the experience. While the dish I got could use improvement, it tasted home cooked and didn’t break the bank. There were so many good options on the menu, and pair that with the great atmosphere, it makes me want to come back here again. Come for some easy food, and stay for a great time.
Took the family out for fall break and decided on eating at Tolbert's. The food was excellent and at a fair price. I had the catfish with hushpuppies with tarter and cocktail sauce. My sides were onion rings and a side salad with blue cheese. It was good. The fish seemed very fresh. I liked how they did the side salad with some crumbles in the blue cheese dressing. The wife had the chili, and I had to try it since they had won some awards. It was awesome. Great taste, with some spice coming through at the end. If you want more spice, eat that Serrano pepper. It was no joke. The waitress was the best. I didn't catch her name, but she was great. Short brunette. Very efficient.

Customer service just ok. Chili was ok. wine was absolutely terrible. Their French fries were the best thing there.

Prices are a little high for the small portion sizes. fish sandwich- bun fell apart (ended up having to eat it with a fork) , fish was almost nonexistent, thin and soggy. Frito pie, was small with only a few Fritos. Burger was good, but bun crumbled and fell apart. Salad was good- fresh lettuce and good portion size. Bowl of chili was very small for being a bowl. Closer to cup size. Someone with a small appetite, added the 4oz to make it a super bowl, and still left hungry. Definitely not a meal portion. I have a food allergy and asked for a manager as soon as we got there. Asked 2 more times, we were there over a hour, still never seen a manager. Waitress-was good, friendly and kept our drinks full. *** in response to owner*** I don't mind high prices and small portions if the food and service is worth it. Unfortunately that was not our experience. We spent over $100 on lunch for 4 people(2 of which were children) just to go get food elsewhere to get full. But never seeing the MOD after requesting multiple times sadly was the last straw. Unfortunately we will not return nor recommend

Went based off the reviews. Ordered based off highly ordered items via server. Chili was bland and gritty. Steak fingers meal only came with 3 pieces. Mac and cheese was watery. Loaded tater tots and fried pickles were the best thing we had. Didn't finish the chili. Real disappointed on quality of food.
