We had lunch here today. We were greeted warmly by the owner’s daughter and were given a choice of seating. After perusing the menu, I selected the fried shrimp with red beans and rice. Hubby got pork chop and red beans and rice. The meals came out timely. The six shrimp were huge, crispy and perfectly seasoned. I dug in so fast, I forgot to take a photo. Hubby enjoyed his thick pork chop accompanied by the beans and rice. Looking forward to the next visit, to order a bowl of gumbo. The meals are very reasonably priced. Our total for a filling and delicious lunch came to about $25.00. They only take cash for tips. Dad is at the register, mom is in the kitchen. It’s a family run restaurant.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could! Ma saved our party! I tried to make my own gumbo for the first time and it was a flop. The day of the party I decided to call Ma Harper's. I had always heard great things about the place but had never tried it. I ordered A LOT of gumbo. When I got there, Ma said since it was for a party she wanted to make it extra specia l- the way she would make it for her party. Her team did an amazing job! The gumbo was a hit! And I'm so disappointed we did not visit this place earlier. It's our new creole spot and I can't stop telling everyone about it. Thank you Ma! You're the best!
Came here two years ago to visit my granny. It was my first time in San Antonio, Texas. I heard Ma Harper’s had great food so I had to stop by. I got the fried fish and shrimp with red beans and rice and gumbo with cornbread. Everything was amazing, especially the gumbo. My granny was 95 and I found out her and Ms Harper are friends. I can’t wait to come back and visit. I’ll def make sure I order a gumbo to go!!!!!
Place is an amazing find. The food was delicious (gumbo, rice on, fried shrimp and fish plate with rice and beans, swamp water, peach cobblers), good prices, but the best part is the service. We really felt like we visited family. Will be back for sure.
BVOCAL4LOCAL UPDATE... Okay finally had the cobbler. It was everything I wanted it to be LOL yummmmmmmmmmmm A friend suggested going here. And we're still friends. LOL. Red beans and rice weren't as spicy as my moms but still yummy. That's what hot sauce is for, right?... cornbread was great. My friend had the fish plate and said it was really good, very tasty. I had the shrimp poboy sandwich that was fantastic! if you don't like wet, don't get this sandwich or get the mayo like mix on the side. The shrimp were delish! Cooked to perfection... Ratio of bread to shrimp was perfect. Would I like more shrimp? Well duh, but it was shrimp in every bite.... Loved the tea! We didn't save room for the peach cobbler so we ordered it to go. Don't leave without it in a to go box or your belly. This was so close to my moms peach cobbler (moms usually had loads of cobbler) that I can hardly wait to try the sweet potato pie! And more cobbler of course. Maybe the next visit will be all about desserts!..... Almost forgot, Ma Harper actually came out to check on tables. She asked how everything was and when we said it was great, she said "that's what I like to hear"... What an honor. See you soon Ms Harper!
What a wonderful hidden gem. I wish they were open longer. Great spot for lunch. Staff is funny , friendly and super helpful. Mom & pop run place that’s very homey. Food was great. Gumbo was so flavorful. Pork chop plate was just right. Corn bread was amazing. Ma Harper’s is the spot to get gumbo.
As a southern boy, with both parents from Louisiana this place makes me so happy!! I feel like I'm back home and my phone grandma's table, having the smells of fried okra and cornbread. Since I was sick today I was craving comfort food, aka gumbo. Found this place online and had to try it out. Walking in it reminded me of being in a small town in southern Louisiana, where everyone knows everyone and an old lady screaming in the background. The gumbo was good! I like my rue a little darker but this is the best I've had in SA! The staff was super friendly and the gumbo hit the stop. I'll be back for sure!
We came to San Antonio for a Christmas getaway and Ma Harper’s was first on our list to eat!! Well we didn’t make it until Saturday but man o man was it worth the wait!! And Ma is so sweet and personable and she is a USAF veteran, it is a must to go for fresh creole food!! Fish, shrimp, gumbo and the red beans and rice. If you don’t go, you won’t know. Take care Ma and we will be back.
Charming spot, the very vibrant 90 plus year old host and owner, is an amazing woman. She makes you feel at home. It felt like being invited home for dinner rather than being at a restaurant. The food was amazing. The flavors were well balanced and delicious. My daughter doesn't like restaurant cornbread, and she ate the entire thing. I recommend anything on the menu, but I loved the red beans n rice with the fried pork chop and washed it down with some swamp water. Food may take a while as it's mostly done to order, so just be patient it's not fast food. Enjoy your drink and cornbread while you wait or take in some of Ma's stories. It's definitely the place to try some southern comfort food. Can't wait to go back.
Fantastic Creole Kitchen The gumbo was divine with Ma’s cornbread. The fried pork chop and red beans & rice and the fried shrimp po’ boy were straight out heaven. The atmosphere is inviting and meeting Ma Harper was a delight. Such a fun and lovely person. At 95 years young still stopping by each table and chatting and making sure you have what you need. What a blessing to this community she is. When in San Antonio this is a must visit place for food and conversation.
This place is for lack of better words, simply spectacular. The ambience and vibe is great. From the decor to the quality of the service and food is an overall 5 stars. Ma Harper food will meet all your expectations. Start your visit with their swamp water, which taste delicious. The award winning food will take you straight to New Orleans. This place reminds me of that part in the movie ratatouille in which the reviewer taste the food and he was taken back to his childhood favorite food, that's exactly how I felt. I highly recommend this place.
My original decision to visit San Antonio first was when I saw Ma Harper's Creole Kitchen on Diners,Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network. It did not disappoint. The gumbo was as advertised. Lots of shrimp and sausage a little spicy and the cornbread is a good complement. The catfish was cooked very well and hot as was the jumbo shrimp with a kick of spice. The rice and beans did not have as much flavor as I would have expected, but I have nothing I have eaten to compare them to. If you are looking for fancy this is not the place. If you are looking for good food, you will enjoy!
Felt so welcomed as we entered, had an old school feel, and was clean. The shrimp, catfish, and porkchop were seasoned and fried well; the boudain sausage was packed with flavor! The cornbread was soft and buttery, the swap water wasn't too sweet , and the sweet potato pie was one of the most flavorful and soft slices I've had in awhile. I expected a little more flavor from the red beans and rice and I was really looking forward to the bread pudding but it was still cooking. Will definitely be back to try the gumbo and hopefully the bread pudding.
The food was well seasoned and served with great hospitality. The only things I didn't like were the fake catfish (swai), the old cornbread. The boudon link was good but the meat was a little too fresh for my taste. The red beans/rice, seafood gumbo, and peach cobbler are definitely homemade and 3 things I will definitely order again.
The gumbo was exceptionally good. Had a bit of seafood and sausage. I would go back for the gumbo. The red beans and rice is a different story. If you’re into bland red beans, this is your place. I believe they needed additional help with some veggies such as onions and celery. I detected no additional flavouring either. To me it was like taking kidney beans out of a can. I would not recommend the red beans and rice. The cornbread was very good. My dining companions ordered the fried fish and their portions were ample. My fried fish for some reason was about an of an eight of inch thick.
Ma Harper's Creole Kitchen is a small, family-owned restaurant located just outside of Fort Sam Houston. They have been in business for over 20 years and are known for their delicious Creole food. The restaurant is open Thursday to Sunday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The restaurant is small, but it has a cozy atmosphere. The walls are decorated with photos and artwork, and there is a jukebox in the corner. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is delicious. The cornbread is especially good, and the gumbo is flavorful and hearty. Other popular dishes include the jambalaya, the shrimp and grits, and the catfish po'boys. Overall, Ma Harper's Creole Kitchen is a great place to get a delicious Creole meal. The food is reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is warm and inviting. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good meal in the San Antonio area.
