Best coffee, best people, best vibes! Definitely stop here while in area and cross the street for sightseeing near Waterfront or sit, study and savor! Cathy, Kendall, Hannah, Jonathan, Miguel, Liz+ and the Columbia District community of regulars (even pups) make this place awesome! I don't really recommend matcha right now because it is premade in clear glass jar but Lavender Latte as well as Passionfruit herbal tea are amaze! Quality 🤌
The perfect coffee spot. Portal has a cool, trendy vibe, and the space is comfortable for catching up or getting some work done. The staff is also great—super friendly and knew the menu well. I got an almond milk matcha with half the sugar, and it was perfectly prepared. It was a good experience all around!
We hosted an intimate event at the portal Coffee House for a 30th birthday breakfast for a dear friend. Staff were amazing, cheerful, give us everything even sang Happy Birthday ;-> We took in the beautiful patio View at our Leisure, watching dogs and the Community Happy People strolling by! Then we went for a walk down by the bay which is only a block or so away through the happy children at the park, music by seagulls accented by the Salt Air: it was wonderful. Recommend highly! Great way to start a birthday ;-). Who posted these little Googly eyes on the railing overlooking the view of Waterfront Park? How delightful ;*)
Such a nice place to sit and have a morning coffee, with a view of the harbor! The chive biscuit sandwich is top notch 💯 And the Tonka Bean latte - so yummy, never had tonka bean before!
I love this coffee shop. The location is great, it's right by the trolley station so you can have access to it super easily. I prefer walking because it's right in Little Italy. This is a great spot to get your laptop and do some work, or read a book while you sip delicious coffee. I finished a lots of projects here. The coffee is very good too. Today I also tried the spinach pastry and it was delicious! The owners are super nice as well. They really care about their customers. I feel like this coffee shop has so much personality compared to some others. For the summer months, there is a nice outdoor seating too. Definitely a must go place.
Top 5 cup of coffee of all time. Excellent technique and excellent Barista product. Food looked really good but I didn’t embibe.
Cool coffee shop in a great location. Staff were friendly and coffee was really good. Ordered a flat white with oat milk. There is the option to order using a kiosk, staff were happy to help too, great having different options to place orders especially if it gets busy. Would recommend if you are in the area.
Really nice coffee shop in Downtown San Diego. The baristas are super helpful and help answer any questions that you may have. Orders are placed through their self-service kiosks (which I like a lot personally as it avoids any confusion on what your exact order is). Service is quick and beverages come in very nice cups (if you decide to order and consume your beverage in-store). Would definitely come here again.
Cosy and heartwarming lattes. Love the vibe and pastries are super fresh -- All are great and my favourite is the apple cider scone.
Would love to give a 6 stars to this place: 1. love how easy it is to order on the machine 2. Love how easy to choose sugar level for flavored latte on the machine, I usually only go with regular latte because any syrup could be too sweet to me and I hate to ask for less syrup every time 3. Caramel latteI with less sugar tastes just right 4. Great view of the waterfront park from outdoor seating area 5. Espresso is superb. Well balanced flavors with a dreamy aroma 6. Pastry is surprisingly good too! I got almond croissant and it’s very flaky and crumbly with a balanced sweetness.

Good breakfast spot. Surprisingly many people stop by on their morning walk with their dogs to pick up something, and some even stop for "breakfast".

Visiting from the PNW and we're not supposed to like anything from California 🤣 but I have no choice in the matter, the coffee was excellent. I didn't order good, but the baked goods looked fantastic and they are all made in house apparently. Lovely service and a nice outdoor seating area.

The ambiance of Portal Coffee matches its location of San Diego bay. The two baristas set the tone of the ambience. Professional, yes. Yet there was more. It was easy to see that they enjoyed their work, which nicely affects the store. This coffee shop has a flare for the arts, as seen on the freehand drawings on the paper coffee cups. The wait time was a little long, but this is an indication of good coffee. If you are looking for a coffee moment by the bay, then sip on a freshly brewed coffee treat at Portal Coffee.
I ordered their rose vanilla latte, which was pretty good. There was a couple people in front of us when we got there around 9 AM, but the line was quick. Took us a few minutes away for our coffee. overall it’s a good experience.
Just had a coffee break at Portal Coffee in San Diego, and it was a gem! The vibe is super chill, with a cozy atmosphere that makes it perfect for getting some work done or just hanging out. The coffee is top-notch—seriously, one of the best lattes I've had in a while. Plus, the staff is really friendly and clearly knows their stuff. They’ve got some tasty pastries too, which pair perfectly with their rich brews. Definitely a spot I’ll be coming back to!

Went with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised by how great everything was. Bagel breakfast sammich was exactly what I hoped for, bagel was a little hard but that is really my only complaint. I like bitter coffee and drip coffee was fresh and hit the spot. Got a little loud because of the rush. Overall great spot to sit and relax, great option for your morning breakfast, and for coffee.
Enjoyed our coffee. Was served a flat white when I ordered a Latte. The girl who took my order responded "it's the same thing" which is false, but it didnt ruin my day. Great location across from the park

A very cute little café overlooking the waterfront with a great location and both indoor and outdoor seating. I went at a time when it wasn’t very busy, but the staff didn’t feel very welcoming, friendlier service would have gone a long way. I asked for a 12 oz latte in a “for here” cup and was told the cup was only 10 oz, yet I was still charged for a 12 oz, which didn’t feel fair, especially since everything is already quite overpriced. The latte itself was good, but the staff and overall service could definitely use some improvement.
a solid neighborhood spot that flirts with greatness but doesn’t quite commit. Service is friendly, coffee is consistently good, and the brick-walled interior plus charming outdoor seating give it a nice vibe. But can we talk about the Cortado situation? It deserves better than a to-go cup. It’s like dressing a filet mignon in a paper napkin — functional, but soul-crushing. Still, not a bad little place to stop in if you’re in the area.

I don’t usually leave bad reviews on account of service. But today I stood there waiting to order while three girls were sitting or standing behind the counter watching one girl making another order. Took about 5 minutes to be acknowledged, then the girl who had just made another order came to take my order, while the other three just stood there chatting. While waiting for the poor girl doing all the work to make my coffee another person came in and the same thing happened. So my drink was only made after the second order was taken. It was wild to watch and I felt ignored and unvalued. The coffee was fine but at this point I didn’t really want it.
I ordered the sausage, egg and cheese sandwich on a bagel which on their menu said it was eight dollars and the cashier didn’t mention that’s an extra two dollars for the bagel could’ve been helpful but let’s move onto the trash sandwich that they made the sausage was completely uncooked, pink matter fact ,no flavor ,the egg was rubber . Not no butter on the bagel. Terrible dry. Went straight from a frozen freezer to a toaster oven. What a shame. Outdoor seating was nice at least.

$13.50 for 2 small coffees and one biscuit. The overpriced coffee was stale, bitter, and barely lukewarm. The cheese biscuit was so salty I was concerned that my raised my blood pressure would skyrocket. Apparently, Californians and tourists are so used to getting ripped off that they are oblivious to it. So they just keep paying more and more for less and less, and are not bothered by poor quality at outrageous prices.
