Highly recommend this if you’re craving coconut curry chicken, i would’ve given them 5 stars if only it had coconut flavor in it. But the curry was really good along with the chicken & rice. I also wish they would offer brown rice as a substitute over the steam white rice. Friendly staff, family owned. A small place but they have enough tables to fit around i would say 20 people. They also have two tables outside if u plan on dining outside. Overall nice place in the Richmond District if you’re craving Chinese food.
My wife and I went out to San Francisco on a day trip from Sacramento and towards the end of the day we were getting hungry. Being that we’re from out of town we didn’t know where to go so we just drove until we found something that looked good. I’m so glad we came across this gem in the middle of Balboa street. Food, service and atmosphere were all 10/10. We’ll definitely be coming back next time we’re in the area or maybe we’ll make a special trip just for Wen Cheng
When I was in highschool my favorite restaurant to eat at was Nan King Road Bistro. The owner was the friendliest guy ever and the food was absolutely incredible every single time without fail. Every dish was a symphony of perfection. When it closed, it was as of a piece of my heart closed forever, too. So, when I decided to look up a quiet, unassuming Chinese restaurant that I frequently drove by, Wenchang Dumpling Restaurant, and saw that they had a mind-boggling 4.9/5 stars on Google reviews, I immediately thought back to Nan King Road Bistro. Imagine my absolute euphoria when, reading through the glowing reviews, I read a response from the owner saying that in fact... THIS PLACE IS THE SAME RESTAURANT!!! They just moved due to the exorbitant rents of 9th and Irving! I just got home from my first visit to Wenchang. My friends and I ordered wonton soup, honey sesame chicken, black pepper steak, crab rangoons, shrimp dumplings, and green tea. Everything was as amazing as I remember! Large generous portions of piping hot homemade food- true comfort. 9/5 stars.
Food was delicious. They walked past our table with the chow mein and it smelled so good we had to order it. It did not disappoint. Soup dumplings were delicious as was the honey sesame chicken. Family run. Small. Only a few tables that were full before we got there and after we left. Constant to go orders being picked up. Was cash only. We will come back.
This is the type of hole-in-the-wall, mom & pop shop that makes you tell your friends “I know a spot” and then bring them here to eat the most gas, flavorful, tastebud-elevating Chinese food. The hot & sour soup was average (but I’m not a big fan in the first place). The veggie bao buns filling was more green (no carrots-type) and the bun itself was a little sticky rather than completely fluffy. Now that’s out of the way, get the chow mein and the mapo tofu. The chow mein really was whipped up with pure flavor essence: you have no idea what they put in there, but it is the best chow mein I’ve ever had. The mapo tofu had a very “clean” flavor profile, and the sichuan peppercorns were not super strong. This provides a more balanced taste than what you usually expect from a mapo tofu dish. Portions sizes are also huge! Highly recommend this place.
YUMMMM! Fresh, flavorful, colorful and beyond delicious! Tiny little spot, where locals convinced us to try. I can't say enough about the food & quality. Pretentious free dining area, service was excellent. Dumplings were out of this world, you could taste their pride in every dish we had. I wish Minnesota had an amazing restaurant like this.
WOW !!! Just go and enjoy the food !!! If you’re looking for an authentic home cooked Chinese food, this could be your place. The food we ordered ranks high up there with other popular restaurants so the reviews are correct. I also liked that it’s in a quiet neighborhood and it appears to be family run. Buy the way, bring cash 🙂. Perhaps in the future, consider putting a credit card payment option. We really enjoyed the food, thank you !!!
Came here at least 5 times last 12 months, Food is amazing here, I can tell ingredients used were all so fresh and flavors so so good, and so affordable. Thank you for providing such a good experience every time
Something about this place feels special. The food is fresh and the inside is cozy. I have only come here twice but each time is filled with good memories. This is a great place to come with a loved one or with a small group of friends.
Ordered through doordash so didn’t really get to experience the location but the food was so good! The noodles had a nice seasoning to them and not too greasy. The dumplings were AWESOME got the pork and shrimp. I’m from out of town so I’m trying to check out other restaurants in the area but I would most definitely munch out here again!
The sesame chicken is DOPE. All the food is good. My friend really liked the Singapore noodles. We ordered way too much food and ate delightedly eating leftovers all weekend. The sesame chicken stays crispy somehow after the microwave. No complains about any of the dishes.
Located on the hills of San Francisco, right near the Golden Gate Park, this is my go to place for mouth watering food. Recommendations: Mushroom Mapo-Tofu Lunch with ChowMein - It is a vegetarian option. Perfectly seasoned and delicious Mapo Tofu. Absolute Must Try. Veggie "bao" Bun - Steaming hot, packed flavors.
Absolutely loved this small, family-owned restaurant! The food was fresh and delicious with large portions — definitely great value for the price. You can really taste the care they put into every dish. Will definitely be coming back!
This place is a true gem! A real find! Perfect atmosphere! Friendly and quick service! The food is fresh and incredibly tasty! Prices are very reasonable for such delicious food :) Highly recommend the Mangal-style meat!
I love living in San Francisco. No notes, 10s across the board, delicious. I'll be back 100 times I hope. The beef and broccoli is gingery, the noodles smoky and crisp, the dumplings hot and flavorful, and omg the crispy honey chicken. Don't tell anyone though, this is our secret now.
Outstanding soup dumplings! Thin skin, rich broth, perfect flavor. Quick service, cozy atmosphere. A must-visit for authentic Northern Chinese dumplings in SF.
It is a small restaurant, but the food is great! The place was full of people looking for to go food and having dinner at the restaurant too. The rice and meats are to share 2 to 3 persons, it was made at the moment and it was hot and fresh!
Delicious food, off the beaten path, yet worth it. Fresh, high quality chicken The sesame chicken was unique and delightful. The buns and dumplings were incredible. I devoured them without much of an appetite, literally that good. The staff works hard to keep things flowing.
Amazing value! The portions are huge and every dish was packed with flavor. Quick service and great food. My new go-to Chinese spot.
Small Gem for Chinese food/ Dumplings. We ordered the Mongolian Beef, 4 Seasons Chow Mein and Xiao Long Bao. All are excellent with lots of flavors. Portions were very generous. Prices are very reasonable. Definitely will be back.
Fantastic wok seared food. After driving out to Richmond for some tacos, only to discover it was closed, we stopped in at WenChang. I was craving some noodles and Mongolian beef. This place did not disappoint. Every dish was super fresh and you could actually see the wok seared marks on the noodles. Hard to capture how good the food was here. There’s not a lot of tables, so I could imagine a little wait during rush hour.
Dined into this cute little corner restaurant. The Hong Kong noodles were delicious and the egg drop soup was loaded but the star was the crispy honey sesame chicken. The chicken was the crispiest I've ever had and the sauce was awesomely sticky. The way the sauce coated the chicken was also unrivaled, it wasn't watery at all so the chicken stayed crispy the whole time. Definitely gotta go back and try more of their stuff. Update: in aspirin to the crispy sesame chicken we got sweet and sour pork and the cream cheese ragoons. lagoons. Delightfully crispy and very flavorful.
As soon as you walk in the restaurant, you know you’re in for some good eating. The decorations and music have that family business charm that makes you feel comfortable and nostalgic. And the food lives up to those lofty expectations. Each dumpling looks hand made with care and has that home made taste you associate with your mother’s cooking. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. It had me grinning ear to ear as soon as I stepped in. Please, please support this business and make them the neighborhood institution that they deserve to be.
We had two w sum dishes , and the Singapore rice noodles. Both were delicious, freshly made, and I particularly enjoyed being able to pick which kind of protein for the Singapore rice noodles. Big portions, reasonable prices, leftovers for tonight!

Fantastic food and generous portions. The hot and sour soup was the best I’ve had. Highly recommend this place!A must-try in SF.

So delicious! JUST GO!!! Also, bring cash or you pay online, but either way is fine!

Huge portions, great prices! The lunch combo is a fantastic deal. Everything was flavorful. Excellent value for money.

I was craving some dim sum after finishing a 10k race, and we found this place! The restaurant is a bit small and only has 4-5 tables. We ordered their siu mai, xian long bao, and sweet and sour chicken based on the reviews on Yelp. I highly recommend ordering their siu mai; it was packed with flavor and filling, and it was just delicious by itself. For me, I don't have to dip it into any sauce, and it tastes great already. But the xiao long bao was a bit disappointing. The skin was too thick, and there was only a little bit of soup inside, and they didn't even provide any ginger to pair with it. Maybe it's because my baseline standard for xiao long bao is Din Tai Fung (?), so I ended up disappointed. It's my first time trying sweet and sour chicken dish, I would say the chicken was tender and juicy, and the sugar coating makes it have a good crispy exterior.
The soup dumplings were delicious. The flower soup was pretty bland. Generous portions. Decorations were great but was playing American pop music instead of Chinese
I'm just trying places that are supposed to have good hot and sour soup. The one here is vegetarian with strong sour flavor. I like the addition of seafood mushrooms to it. The white pepper flavor is strong. It's pretty good and priced at about $9.50 +tax for a 2 quart container that is not quite full.
Came here to pick up dinner on a weekday night. The family was craving some HK style Chinese food and while there are many options in the Sunset/Richmond area, none has crispy pan fried noodles on the menu. It is curious to me that a dumpling restaurant would serve that but we decided to give it a shot. The order included sweet and sour pork, xiaolongbao, stir fried string beans, fried rice, and crispy noodles - all well prepared. The restaurant itself is at a corner of a relatively quiet neighborhood block and has limited seating. Good option for take out.
WenChang is a winner. I was staying a couple blocks away and stumbled upon this nondescript neighborhood eatery, and I’m so glad I did. The food and prices were great. The crispy honey sesame chicken was a treat. I’m not a big fan of sweet dishes, but this plate was loaded with nice pieces of chicken, fried to perfection with the perfect mixture of sweetness and sesame. The soup dumplings are another must-try dish—savory and juicy. The vegetable chow mein was fresh and not overly cooked. They have two prices for many entrees: cash and credit card. So make sure to bring cash for the best prices.
Went on a weekend for lunch, had to wait outside for 15-20mins as it’s a tiny restaurant with 4-5 tables. Food came pretty quickly though! We ordered xiao long bao (soup dumpling), har gow (shrimp dumpling), potstickers, fried chicken wings, honey sesame chicken, bistro fried rice and Singaporean noodles. All the food was decent but only the bistro fried rice was delicious! We inhaled it so fast that I couldn’t get a picture of it. The har gow and string bean were good too. We’re pretty sure the xiao long bao was not handmade which was disappointing. Potstickers and fried chicken was standard. Would come back again if I’m in the Richmond! Price to food portion was good.
This is a family run restaurant with little seating in the Richmond, we loved this place and have been back for a second serving of XLB already! The service is great and they’re very friendly. XLBs all had the skin intact and hot broth inside, with well marinated stuffing, the mapo tofu was the right amount of spicy, and the sesame chicken were so crispy and juicy. The fried spicy chicken and crab cheese puffs were okay, nothing exceptional. We wouldn’t hesitate to come back and try more things! But we’d be sure to order the XLB every time.
This place gave us that feel good feeling like we were eating homecooked meals. I wasn't a fan of the potstickers but my gf really enjoyed it. The fried chicken wings were surprisingly good and the texture was simply nostalgic. The soup dumplings were a bit off for us though. The pork filling all had the same smooth consistency and the flavors weren't there. Not much to say about the chow fun other than being sad it didn't come with any protein.

Definitely a no-frills restaurant in the inner sunset/Richmond. It was only me and I got pork and shrimp dumplings, and the honey sesame chicken. I asked for a side of broccoli, they would not accommodate. Very small place. I would say better for takeout. Food was good but experienced so so.
Classic Chinese American food with great, fast service. Dumpling - 4/10. It tastes like a frozen dumpling. Not sure. Spicy chicken - 6/10. Nice crispy chicken with a Mala kick. Lo mein - 6/10. Solid lo mein. Portion was huge.

I came here due to good reviews but was pretty disappointed. I ordered pickup through Doordash and the resulting price was very high (restaurant raises prices due to Doordash fee?) which I would have been OK with this one time (I could have paid with cash) but the food was subpar; I ended up throwing most of it out.
Update: The staff refunded the order amount. I made a pickup order of sesame fried chicken and chose spicy level. I appreciate that, despite my early arrival and multiple pickup orders from other clients, the staff prepared the takeout at their earliest convenience. However, I was disappointed to see that when I opened the to-go bag, the plastic lid was broken. I wasn’t sure if the broken piece was left in the kitchen / preparation area, because it was definitely not in the bag when I checked. Alas, it was inside the food. I unknowingly bit a chicken piece only to feel the plastic. It was only a part of that plastic piece—who knows if I had eaten the rest of it already… I felt very uncomfortable I didn’t end up finishing the dish. Additionally, the dish was not “spicy” that I opted for, so overall, quite a disappointing experience. I wish the restaurant did a better job because this could’ve gotten dangerous. I’m still uncomfortable just thinking about what I could’ve eaten. Hope this doesn’t occur to anyone else.
The chow mein are really hard to eat. If you add beef or shrimp you have to add money without prior notice.13.95 USD just for cheap noodles no meat or vegetables in them. The flavor is really bad and very oily. I think the instant noodles sold in the supermarket are more tasty than their chow mein. Will never come again
