During our visit to San Francisco from the UK we stopped in the local area and tried several local places for breakfast, this was our favourite. Food was amazing, staff fantastic and the service was spot on. Made us feel welcome every time. My wife who is vegetarian loved the menu as normally she's quite limited. Thank you again and if we're ever in the area we will be sure to pop in.
Stopped here while visiting SF on vacation last week before checking out the Painted Ladies houses. I had the hungry guy breakfast and it was some of the best breakfast I've ever had! Staff was very friendly and attentive to all the customers including myself. Definitely recommend if you want some good breakfast.
I have been coming here since 1994. Im great friends with the owner, Hasan! I'm a big fan of a few specific dishes here. A Grate Salad, add Fried Chicken. M&M sandwich No bread. Homemade sausage patty, side of red beans, side of smoked bacon collard greens. Thats a full meal.
Perfect place for breakfast. Tried some in SFO but value for money, authenticity, kindness and last but not least food quality is really good. Very local, almost no tourists. Small restaurant so be there at 8.30 when they open up in the morning if you do not want to wait. Great spot to begin SFO lookaround for Europeans like us as you are up early anyway due to jet lag. Big Bus hop on/hop off close by as well as the painted ladies. Definitely at must do and do again when we come back
This place doesn't just have "the best corned beef hash in town." It's the best I've ever had anywhere. ✌️
I ordered the steak and eggs and they cooked my order perfectly so perfectly that I practically did foodporn and there are fresco dining section
This IS the place for breakfast in San Francisco . Worth standing in the queue for such amazing delicious food
The eggs Benedict was good. The sausage was a bit thick and overpowering, but overall delicious. The biscuits and gravy was also pretty great. The coffee was perfect. The ambiance was very nice, I like a little bit more light so I can see my food, but overall, it was a pretty great experience.
Great food - got take out and everyone was super nice
I've been staying in the San Francisco area for a leisure, sight-seeing vacation, and I've been going to this great breakfast place for 6/7 of those days. (Being closed on Tuesdays hurt, lol) Each time I visited with my partner, we were delighted by the service, food quality, and the good coffee that we were treated with at visit. I would be a loyal patron if I lived in the local area, so I encourage everyone to stop in and experience this great hidden gem.
Charming institution with amazing owners, servers, and food! Coming here every sunday with my boyfriend is one the highlights of my life in san francisco. There is so much soul and livedness packed into this space, and it awaits you to make it a part of your life story!
I adore this place for its all day breakfast. The atmosphere feels warm and welcoming, and Melody made my visit even nicer with her wonderful service. My meal was amazing. I ordered the veggie scramble and it was so filling that I could not try the cornmeal pancakes, even though they looked fantastic. I already know that on my next visit I am definitely going to try them.
got a delicious flanched farney garney (whatever that means) and some of the tastiest cornmeal pancakes ever! the man who served us was extremely sweet and apologetic they were so busy. very reasonable prices too!
Great atmosphere, friendly people, the food was amazing! We had red beans and rice with collards and a fried chicken sandwich.
BEST FOOD EVER! Visiting from Florida, our experience wasn't the best due to our car being broken into, but this place helped me forget all of that. The Red Bean Outrageous was absolutely fantastic! It was definitely worth the journey; the food and service were AMAZING!
The food was very tasty and the staff was super friendly! While we stayed in San Francisco we have had breakfast at Kate”s Kitchen twice. The coffee and food was great. They also gave us blueberry pancakes and Hush puppies to try. Definitely would recommend, it made our stay even more great! Greetings from the Netherlands :)
Such a great find! Out of all the places you could grab lunch in San Francisco, I’m sure glad we stumbled upon Kate’s Kitchen. Highly recommend!
I've been wanting to try this place. Well, no surprise, I was disappointed. I understand busy and wanting to turn tables, but there is this thing called customer service, rather than watch your customers and ask if they are finished, ask them how thier meal is or if they need anything. I really like being asked how my meal is or if I need anything. With that said, the food was good, DO NOT order a Cappuccino from them. That was really my only problem. The waitress was nice and took it off, Reason why I left a good tip.
I live it serving breakfast all day!! The place had a great atmosphere, and Melody was a great waitress! The food was excellent! I wanted to to the cornmeal pancakes, but I was full from the veggie scramble that I had ordered. On my next trip, I'll have the pancakes for sure!
I literally cannot believe the ratings for this joint aren’t higher! The food was flawless and the best meal I ate while visiting San Fran! We ordered hush puppies to share and they were divine, so thickly breaded and delicious. I had a latte with oat milk and it was actually the best latte I had while there.
The best ever coffee.... We all loved our coffee and hush puppies. The vibe, staff are amazing. We felt right at home and are excited to stop in the have breakfast on our next family outing. Brother Cran and sister Claudia are the best, they know all the amazing places - Photos to follow... Thank yuou!
I was able to walk in and sit at a 2-top alone, just before the real Sunday brunch rush began. Delicious chicken apple sausage, split and browned perfectly. Gluten-free options made choosing a dish delightfully difficult, but I finally settled on the French toast, which came beautifully topped with a banana, strawberry, blueberry mix. Hot coffee, plenty of it, brewed fresh often was the perfect accompaniment. My neighbors ordered the hush puppies, and I longed for the days of eating gluten when their bowlful was delivered. I will certainly return on my next trip, and I'll likely repeat the walk up the hilly part of Haight to Ashbury to burn off a few of the happy calories I'll take in then, too.
I had a lovely brunch with a former colleague today and really enjoyed the veggie scramble. We talked at length with the charming long-time owner and had a great experience at this quaint place.
Both the hash and eggs and the eggs Benedict were fantastic. I suspect the rest of the menu is also pretty great. Service was also really friendly and helpful. I can see why this place is a neighborhood institution.

Absolutely delicious veggie breakfast scramble. Fresh squeezed OJ in the mimosas. Many veggie and gluten free options. Excellent service. No wait on a Saturday. Great mimosas prices.
Both the gluten free and standard pancakes were very tasty, soft and large portions. The service & atmosphere were the friendliest encounters we had during our trip to SF.

This is a tough for me to decide on a rating for. We'll start with the bad. We waited about 45 minutes for our food to get cooked. It was only two of us and we got a sandwich and an omelette. The redeeming qualities are the food was great, the biscuits are very tasty and our server was friendly. I'm hoping the wait was just a one-off occurrence. I'll cautiously try eating here again.
If you’re looking for that home made breakfast place in San Francisco, then this would be the place for you. The food looks like it’s coming out of your kitchen, no fancy style, just good food. I went for the big guy’s breakfast, definitely needs a big guy, a two butter pancake short stack, 2 sunny side up eggs, a flat sausage, bacon and some fries, I will give that a 4/5. The cappuccino was really good, very well presented and deserves a photo of its own 😁. Home made coffee and fresh orange juice (pulp included) compliments it all. Enjoy 👍
This place is clean, staff are friendly and the food was tasty! Gluten free bread and vegan options available. I ordered the tofu scramble and added a side of chicken apple sausage ($7) a bit pricey .. but I’d definitely go back to hang out in the outdoor patio area for brunch again.
Visiting from out of town (Texas) Breakfast was traditional and tasteful. We ordered some traditional breakfast consisting of eggs bacon sausage and pancakes as well as some orange juice and lattes. The orange juice is freshly squeezed and it was probably the best orange juice I’ve had while in the city. The lattes where delicious but wish it was a little stronger. (Just personal preference) The food itself was good the only thing that was not my favorite where the pancakes because I have never had cornmeal pancakes however I can see why some people would like them. Originally came here because of the pictures of the bagels however they don’t sell bagels anymore so don’t justify coming here for that alone. Came on a cold day for us (58) and the door was opened and felt cold the entire time. Asked if they could turn on the fire heater we were sitting next too and where told no. Other then that it’s a great little spot for brunch. Parking is limited.

Nice breakfast/brunch spot. Attentive service and plenty of coffee refills. Delicious omelette of the day and American breakfast. Feels like a typical cozy east coast cafe with classic American dishes!

Pretty bummed, I've been going to Kates for a couple years bc they had the BEST gluten free pancakes made with riceflour, which, if you're GF, you know thats the best kind of flour. But they changed the recipe :( and now its cornmeal.... which is one of the worst. The coffee also tasted sour. Time to find a new place, sad!
I used to live just up the street. I came almost every weekend to eat here. Today, I ordered the farmer’s breakfast. I don’t care for the home fries too much. So, I asked if I can substitute hash browns. The waiter said, not on the weekend. Then, he said I could substitute a fruit cup. What? I can substitute a fruit cup but not hash browns, because it’s the weekend? It’s just an odd rule. The portions are much smaller than they used to be. Look at the amount of home fries. The plate was $9.50 and two basic pieces of bacon were an extra $4. I used to leave really full. Today, I could eat another plate. It just makes me want to find another place for breakfast. And, I will.
I regret to leave such an awful review considering the first time I ate here, the spicy chicken sandwich was one of my top three favorite chicken sandwiches I've EVER eaten. Unfortunately, we had to take our order to go, and when we got home, the collard greens were borderline flavorless, with barely any bacon at all. My partner's $5 order of extra bacon barely existed in his scramble, and the server told me that my crispy chicken sandwich would come with fries. I had no idea she meant home fries, which inevitably always mean the potatoes are heavily starchy and flavorless. This was certainly the case for our order, and instead of the sandwich I ordered, I received a grilled chicken sandwich with home fries, and just so I could be sure, I tried one. They were the worst potatoes I've ever eaten. I took the chicken out of the sandwich to store for later, since the chicken looked fine but the rest of the sandwich was a mess. The hash browns were absolutely delicious, so they were the redeeming quality of the meal, but they were only about 1/5 of the order. The biscuits, although they looked flaky, buttery, and filled with chives, were stale and bland. This is so incredibly disappointing considering the 5 out of 5 rating I would have given the first time I went there. Basically, order the spicy crispy chicken sandwich, and you'll absolutely love this place! Other than that, this place was an overall disappointment the second time. Maybe we just got them on an off day.
I've been going to Kate's Kitchen since late 90's. I was always a big fan. After Covid, I noticed the quality and quantity had decreased, but that was to be expected. I was happy that they survived post-Covid downturn, while many small businesses did not. However, last time we were there, I wanted to give the owner some friendly advise, which was to take the word "thick-sliced" bacon off of the menu as I the bacon was no longer thick-sliced. I told him it was still good, but I knew that he might save himself some grief over customer complaints, just by removing that word from the menu. Instead, the owner went on a loud tirade about how "he doesn't need us" and he is retiring in 2 years. Very disappointing, and I will never go back.
ORDERED the Rib-Eye Steak Sandwich. Absolutely not edible .The amount of fat that was on the meat in this Sandwich I haven't consumed in my whole lifetime. Money thrown out the window!!!!
