I'm so happy a cafe and space like this has opened in my neighborhood. The baker, Joanna, is such a nice woman with a great vision for her and her husband's space in Lower Polk. The pastries that I had -- a brownie and cinnamon croissant -- are fresh and beautifully created. Not too sweet either, which I so appreciate as compared to Mr. Holmes down the street. We really need more places like this in the neighborhood, where good ingredients and attention to quality are valued. The space itself is modern but cozy; quiet enough to have a coffee, read, or chat with a friend. They own the gift shop next door as well, which I'm told will be a space for events in the future. I look forward to revisiting once they start serving brunch!

Very lovely cafe with a parklet and a few extra tables in front for outdoor dining during COVID-19. The pain au chocolate was excellent and very sizeable. Interior was very photo friendly with a nice mural of “I 🥐 SF” on the wall. Pastries were in the $4-6 range and drinks were about the same price. Also had some pantry items available for purchase along with a couple of mugs and totes.

Everything here is excellent ! Honestly, some things are even better than what I’ve had in France. The staff is always so kind and welcoming, no matter who’s working that day. I come here all the time, and it never disappoints. If you’re homesick or just craving authentic French food, this is the place to go. I moved to San Francisco a few months ago, and out of everything I’ve tried, this bakery is by far the best French spot in the city.

Traveling all the way from Switzerland, known for its love of bakery delights, my visit to this bakery in San Francisco was met with high expectations. Thankfully, I was far from disappointed! The excellent coffee, along with the incredibly fresh and perfect croissants and pastries, left me in awe. Without a doubt, this is the best bakery in San Francisco, and I enthusiastically recommend it to everyone. I'm already looking forward to my next visit!

C'est delicieux! A little piece of la 🇫🇷 just off Union Square... so glad I wandered here for a fresh almond croissant, kouign-amann, and cafe au lait. Lovely atmoshere with parisian charm, bistro tables out front and inside, and buttery goodness all around. M'ais oui!

BRUNCH OF MY DREAMS This place is not only adorable but the staff is so sweet. I came in with my dad and they hadn’t seen him for a bit so they gave us a chocolate croissant on the house. Food is the way to my heart and that was only the beginning of an amazing experience. I ordered their avocado croissant toast (yes a second croissant) and couldn’t have been happier. It was one of the best croissants I have had to date and felt like I was in a little Parisian cafe eating it. Of course we had to wash it down with an espresso and mimosa. My only regret is not ordering their French onion soup (it’s vegetarian which is a rarity to find). I cannot say enough about how much I loved Le Marais! I will be back and I don’t even live in San Francisco.

Quiche is PROPER, rich, creamy custard, possibly the best I've eaten in years. The chocolate and custard pastry is PERFECT - Crunchy laminated dough, creamy and bittersweet from the chocolate... WOW. What a find!!! Oh, and good coffee, too.

Charming quiet bakery cafe. The decor is white and serene, the service pleasant and the food is really good. My daughter enjoyed the crisp levain with priuscotto, while I, suffering from the indignities of a Whole30 diet had to settle for an Americano, hard boiled egg, fruit and avocado. Everything was really great! I will definitely visit again to sample the amazing looking pastries.

Good vibes, good almond croissants, and good staff. Enjoyed my first time here. Also saw that they support the local community. Excited to come again.

Would be my third time back to this place, a nice spot that my mother loves to go to. If you want those croissants you have the get there before 11am.

New spot for pastries and coffee off Polk st, on Sutter. Highly recommend the scone! Coffee delicious, big space, lots of light, good service. Nice Strada machine and Verve coffee. Kind of cheesy Paris decor, but lovely space with lots of seating.

Yummy! My first time here and I’m rather pleased. I asked for a Ham and Cheese Croissant and a Spring Iced Tea (I think). Half eaten in the photo (I’m so sorry). Both very good. Also they let me bring my dog inside. She is small / medium and very well behaved. I’m always thankful when I feel that she is welcomed where ever I bring her. Nice place. I will be back and tell a friend or two about this place. Thank you.

Love the ambience and pastries! Barista was very friendly and nice. While sipping on your coffee you can watch the bakers make fresh pastries before you eyes! Super cool and beautiful cafe!

An exceptional croissant, flaky crisp and buttery without losing texture or leaving a buttery mouth feel. Good coffee too.

Le Marais Bakery bakes amazing sweets and croissants. Their Polk Gulch location is clean and bright oasis in a dystopian city. There's sidewalk seating so one can enjoy a bite and beverage. Their kouign amanns are decadent. I prefer to get the kouign amann stick/baton so I get more of the, outside layer as opposed to a traditional one. They make an amazing chocolate chip cookie that is salted; super buttery, crispy and salted chocolate. Everything pairs well with some nice coffee.

K

Love this bakery. Their baked goods are top tier. I always order a bunch to bring into the office for special occasions and my coworkers (who are massive foodies) love the croissants. The place is cute for business meetings or having a cup of coffee with a friend. Def recommend!

A true taste of France at Le Marais Bakery! I stopped by Le Marais and was instantly charmed by the warm, welcoming vibe and the heavenly scent of fresh pastries. I ordered the ham and cheese croissant and a cappuccino—both were absolutely fantastic. The croissant was perfectly flaky, buttery, and generously filled with quality ham and melty cheese. The cappuccino was smooth and well-crafted, with just the right balance of espresso and foam. It could have been a little hotter, though. Le Marais truly captures the essence of a Parisian café—an ideal spot for a cozy breakfast or a relaxing coffee break.

Lovely French café with scrumptious croissants. I enjoyed the almond croissant with an oat milk matcha and it was delightful. Love the open concept kitchen style that is common in SF. The quiche looked amazing - I will have to come back for that.

My first time here and I fully enjoyed my visit! Was recommended to stop by from hotel concierge on my staycation. Delicious and fresh pastries, including my favorite kouign amann. Also shared eggs benedict with my friend visiting with me. She tried a chocolate croissant and said it was amazing as well. I can't wait until my next visit to SF to stop by. I also noticed a pack of frozen cinnamon rolls, might need to get those next time as well! Staff was very kind, great service, variety, and atmosphere 💖🥐

The Eggs Benedict were absolutely delicious, perfectly prepared, and the pastries tasted incredibly fresh, they’re made with care. The whole place has a warm, cozy, family-run feel, and it truly feels like a little piece of France. The atmosphere is charming and authentic, and the people there made it feel very welcoming. Such a sweet and pleasant café, I’ll definitely be coming back.

The BEST breakfast I’ve ever had!!! The chocolate swiss was so good I had to buy another one to take away. The guy on the till was so lovely - he gave us two shortbread biscuits when we were leaving! We will be back.

Cute little gem in the Lower Nob Hill area. Perfect place for French inspired bakery (croissants, tarts, quiche, croque... Cakes). Gerhart helped us today.. He was super friendly, excellent service! They also have a variety of warm dishes, I recommend the breakfast Bristo board for your start of the day!

Easily one of the most underrated bakeries in SF. We come here once a week and love trying all the new things but my favorites are the kougn aman baton, ham and gruyere croissant, and the pain au chocolat. Everything is sooooo good

As close to a Parisian bakery as it gets! The staff was awesome - poor guy was on his own handling it all (prep drinks, brought food to tables, clear tables) but kept his calm and had a big smile on his face! Did I mention that the food was yummy as well? Will definitely come back. Oh and the opening hours for the weekend is now 8am to 4pm (not 3pm as mentioned on here)

An escape to Paris right here in the city, adorable! Beautiful interior and and plenty of seating. We had the chocolate almond croissant and a ham/mustard croissant - the sweet croissant had the perfect balance of almond and chocolate and paired well with their coffee. The ham/mustard croissant was also well balanced, although my partner thought there might have been too much mustard. I will return to try their breakfast and sandwich items! I love the open concept of their kitchen, you can see everything they prepare in house!

The $22 Giant Croissant: Worth Every Flaky Bite Let me just say this: when a croissant requires a 2-day pre-order, you know you’re in for something special. Tucked in the heart of the Castro, Bistro Le Marais Crêperie isn’t just a bakery—it’s a vibe. Between the laid-back Parisian décor, sun-drenched café tables, and the so-SF-it-hurts soundtrack of quiet laptop clicks and oat milk lattes, it’s the kind of place you come to feel a little fancy and a lot full. Now, let’s talk about the star of the show: The Giant Croissant ($22 and worth every penny). This thing is a buttery beast—golden, glossy, and crisp on the outside with a warm, soft, laminated interior that dreams are made of. You can literally hear the flake crackle as you pull it apart. It’s not just a croissant, it’s an event. The staff? Lovely. Patient. Totally cool with my croissant enthusiasm. Watching them wrap this carb treasure felt like I was witnessing a delicate pastry ceremony. Also, major props for the space itself—airy, calm, clean, and filled with natural light. It’s the kind of place you could post up for hours with a friend, a book, or a hot gossip session over espresso and crêpes. Bottom line: Plan ahead. Order the croissant. Clear your morning. Your tastebuds will thank you.

What a fantastic place! The ambiance, music, and service were all excellent, but the highlight was the food. The quiche was perfect—moist inside with a beautifully crisp crust. The coffee, a rich Colombian brew, complemented the meal wonderfully. To top it off, the manager treated us to a croissant that was simply amazing: perfectly crunchy on the outside and buttery on the inside. An unforgettable experience!

So many delightful choices. My favorites are the bouchon de chocolat, tigré gateaux, pain Suisse and the forestière crêpe. Service was good although there was only one person taking orders, making coffees, serving them, and bussing the table. And it was a Sunday morning. The atmosphere was very french, chill, and ideal for a Sunday brunch.

Ordered a chocolate almond croissant with a cafe au lait. It was pretty busy at the time, and coffee I initially got was burnt but the barista/server was friendly and very quick to swap it out and remake it for me. Everything tasted very good, the croissant was well-filled and still great despite not being *Fresh* fresh. Price was decent too!

Coffee was super solid. Their avocado toast is on a croissant that is perfectly crispy along with sunny side up egg and gruyere cheese. It's a nice little cafe with large windows and cute sitting area to people watch while you sip on your coffee. Staff super friendly as well.

Le marais bakery its a modern french bakery cafe. It offers a good variety of croissants and patries all delish. The strawberry scone its a must! and the chocolate almond croissant ara great. They come combined with cogfes and hot drinks. Its a great place for a lights fast coffe breakfast, although keep in mind there’s no food like eggs or toasts to order to the table.

Went Bakery-Hopping on a Sunday morning in SF and came across this very aesthetic Bakery. It had great indoor/ outdoor seating area with lots of Coffee-based beverage options and Baked goods! They also have a more extensive food menu that which I didn't really try. They didn't have the display items labelled so I had to ask the server lady what everything was and how much it costs. Anyway, bought some lemon curd Kouign Amann; Kouign Amann Baton, Chocolate Croissant and a couple Mochas. Everything tasted great. My favorite was the Kouign Amann Baton. Overall, a good place to chill, relax & grab a bite along with coffee. Recommend visiting if in the area.

This is not the fault of the employees but this place takes a really really long time to get service. There seems to only be one person who has to make coffee drinks while also bringing stuff to seated patrons and also people in line. It can take 15-20 minutes to get through just a few people and it’s normally not worth the wait.

Disappointing. The coffee was pretty standard but there is an entire bistro menu online that is not actually up and running. We showed up to find few options include cold crossoints and a "veggie" quiche that turned out to be a ham quiche. When we realized the counter attendant just gave me a crossoint instead . Overall very mediocre experience for SF, I would consider going somewhere else

The food is decent. But definitely not French food. I am french. Nobody speak French in there. The service is pretty slow. And the croissants need a higher quality butter. It's pretty dry.

Honestly don't think I can recommend this place. I don't know if we just went on a bad day, but the first two things we wanted to order they were out of. Ended up getting an omelet that tasted like something I could make at home. The chocolate croissant was pretty good though.

Very rude and unprofessional behavior. I had a very disappointing experience at this place. The staff member was extremely rude and spoke in a disrespectful manner. As a customer, I expect basic courtesy, but instead I was treated badly without any reason. This kind of behavior is unacceptable in a customer-facing business. I hope management takes this seriously and improves staff behavior. They are also disrespectful toward DoorDash delivery drivers, which is unacceptable.”

As a French person, I know what a real pastry should taste like. This... was not it. From the moment I walked in, it was clear this place was more style than substance and even the style was questionable. The pastries looked tired, dry, and frankly, neglected. Everything seemed like it had been sitting out for hours possibly the entire day. And rather than offering anything freshly made, they eagerly pushed what was obviously stale. The taste? Disappointing. Bland, lifeless, and lacking any of the finesse or richness you’d expect from a true French pâtisserie. Worse yet, there were flies hovering around the display : a clear sign of sanitary neglect. Who knows how long those poor excuses for pastries had been out? The general hygiene made me uncomfortable, and I left with serious doubts about food safety. The staff? Indifferent at best. Unhelpful, a bit pushy with upselling old stock, and not particularly friendly which didn’t help the already dismal experience. This place banks on the idea of French pastry, not the quality. If you're actually familiar with good French baking, you'll be appalled. I won’t be coming back and I wouldn’t recommend it unless you're nostalgic for stale food and subpar service.
