It was a random visit to the City when we came upon this hidden gem. There isn't much seating but we were lucky to get in early right after it opened. All the fish was exquisitely fresh and delicious. The menu wasn't overblown with too many options since they highlight the fish spectacularly. If we're ever back in this area, would definitely come back!
A hidden gem in potrero hill, if you have the opportunity don't miss it.
This is a good neighborhood restaurant. We ate on the patio, which is covered and gated from the sidewalk, but let in lots of fresh air (perfect for a nice warm evening). Their menu was smaller than some other sushi restaurants in SF, and they were out of a few of the fish on the menu which made it feel even smaller. But, what they had was very fresh, and well prepared. The service was attentive and friendly. We'll go back!
Delicious sushi! Service was super slow though
Surprisingly delicious and fresh sushi! We got their spider roll, dragon roll, tiger roll and their agadashi tofu. All we're excellent. We generally never get speciality rolls since the fish might not be fresh but wanted to try something different. We were pretty blown away about the quality of fish on these rolls and they weren't completely lathered in sauce like other places! We definitely will come again.
Such a cozy spot. Not loud atmosphere so it's great for conversations. Food is as authentic as it gets. Quality of fish is superb and the appetizers are delicious
Never getting disappointed dining here, lunch or dinner. Having been here for the past five years, and the quality stays as great as the first time. Food always fresh, and maybe the bento box portion increased a bit recently? Amazing! The butter fish and yellow collar plates are always tender and rich-flavored as you can imagine
Umi has sushi I have never had like ume shiso which is pickled plum and shiso leaf and I had to get another order after eating the first. Their agedashi tofu is the best thing on a cold day and I always get this when I go there. Highly recommend this restaurant for unique sushi I haven’t eaten elsewhere and delicious non-sushi dishes as well. And they were accommodating of my small dog in their outdoor patio so I will be coming here often.
I was recommended this place by a Japanese friend as their go-to sushi restaurant in SF. Very fresh sashimi that is well presented, imported japanese options are available though they are not cheap. We tried a selection of both and to be honest we were very happy with the "local" fish.
Pinching myself that I live SOO close to amazingly fresh Japanese sushi!!! They have tons of Japanese fish - kinmedai, medai, Hokkaido uni, toro per availability. Chef's nigiri options that are very affordable. Hamachi kama was DELICIOUS.
We went here because friends live around the corner from Umi and we wanted to make it easy for them. We didnt expect much but much to our surprise Umi delivered unique, delicious sushi and sashimi in a relaxed and friendly environment. To top it off, they have an interesting beer menu with more than just the usual suspects of Japanese beer.
The freshest sushi I’ve had in a while, absolutely delicious! Can’t wait to go back
This spot was so cozy. The lighting is low and it’s so romantic. The sushi was unreal. Loved the garlic butter edamame as well. Total banger!
Absolutely spectacular nigiri. The specials menu was so good I had to have seconds. The quality of their fish is fantastic, and it's priced extremely reasonably. If you like uni you absolutely need to try their uni. I focused mostly on their nigiri, but the hamachi kama was also absolutely fantastic. I'll definitely be coming back whenever I can!
We had a great experience. They had a really nice separate gluten free menu including miso soup which you don’t always get! They were also super fast and accommodating. Highly recommend.
Simple, well-prepared Japanese food in a cozy setting. Good options for sake.
As a sushi amateur, I definitely recommend this place to people who are new and want to experience authentic non-Americanized sushi cuisine. Cozy. One of the few places in the city that is closer to Japanese aesthetic than some others. Earthy/wooden tones, and calm ambience. Server was polite and friendly. We enjoyed our time drinking sake and enjoying few nigiri and maki.
Oh that steak teriyaki! The wild greens in the salad! Sweet Onion Tempura!
casually stumbled upon this place yesterday and had a fantastic meal here!! the grilled miso eggplant appetizer is exceptional, and the futomaki rolls are all fresh and delicious. we ordered the spicy tuna tempura (yum), spicy scallop (perfectly seasoned), and the golden dragon (a bit on the dry side but still satisfying). the atmosphere was nice and well attended, the food came out super fast, and the price was right. would absolutely return here.
Tried this place a couple weeks ago, we had a Bento box and a California roll, in the bento we got the Salmon and Beef Teriyaki both of which were amazing. Probably one of the best beef teriyakis I've had in SF. Didn't really like the California roll that much but it was still good. Will definitely be coming back they have a great lunch bento deal!
I really like it, excellent quality fish - especially the Hawaiian Tuna. Small and simple place with great quality. Perfect.
This is one of the best spots for truly authentic Japanese sushi We live nearby and order from here all the time — just call ahead, place your order, and take a nice little walk to pick it up. Super recommended! 🇯🇵
I had such a lovely dining experience at Umi! It is cozy and low-lit, would be a great date spot. The wait staff was very attentive, the food was very fast, and it wasn't overly crowded (can't speak for the weekend). The fish was fresh & buttery, and the rice was just decadent!
One of my fav spots for sushi! Their handrolls are especially good. I got the golden dragon roll and misoyaki cod as well. The cod was so buttery omg. Friendly staff
Ive been to Umi twice now, once with family and once with a friend. Both times was super happy with the friendly staff, but also loved the fish! The nigiri was really nice (good ratio of fish to rice) and the fish is super fresh. Overall feels like a great deal and a great local sushi spot, would recommend:)
I came here on a Wednesday night for dinner. Seating was very easy and they have the option of indoor or a cute covered patio. We ordered a few rolls and the miso butterfish. The rolls were good, and the butterfish was nicely baked with sweet miso sauce. This is a great no fuss dinner spot with tasty Japanese food and kind service. The restaurant is on the cozier side and good for date nights or a small gathering. Vibes are casual and could be cute for a casual date night or grabbing a quick meal. I will definitely be back to try other things!
Great place for a high-quality Japanese food. They have semi-outdoor seating area, so could seat with the dog. Loved the service too.
Outstanding sushi at a neighborhood place. Casual setting with fair price tags. Good sake menu. What else? (Go for the deluxe sashimi if they have scallops, it was really good 🍣)
We visited Sunday evening around 6pm. Staff greeted us and sat us very quickly. We had the Sashimi and two rolls, the golden dragon roll and tempura rainbow roll. Everything was tasty & fresh! Can’t wait to come back and try more food.
High quality fish, fast service and friendly staff. The agedashi tofu was warm and had the right texture balance. Would come back here for lunch!

There were many food options. I decided to go for the lunch special bento box. The food was fresh and delicious and light. I will be coming here again to try more things from the menu!
Some of the best price:quality ratio I’ve had for sushi in the Bay. Excellent neighborhood, outdoor searing, fresh fish. Try the miso eggplant.
Great food, atmosphere, service. Quiet and nice with the open dining room. Had nigiri combo, other sushi, and cucumber salad. Miso soup a bit salty and cucumber salad slightly too acidic for my taste (but was great for my partner’s taste!), but sushi was great, overall 5 star
The stunning sushi is scrumptious, 5 ⭐️! Anu is the best server, always makes us feel welcome!

The miso soup was forgettable, but I enjoyed the sashimi (chefs choice). The maki toll (spicy tuna) was quite disappointing, maybe we could’ve got something more flavorful and extravagant. I think the real wasabi was a nice touch, and the fish was fresh but I think lacked in the presentation.
Small neighborhood sushi place that hits the spot and doesn't drain the wallet. Sure the rice could use a bit of work but the fish is fresh and tasty, I can always get a table, and service is friendly. There's usually enough parking in the area so it is rarely a problem but you could also take the Muni and hike up the hill. I've tried a variety of items here including the sushi combination and sashimi combination. They also have specials of the day that change with the season. The sashimi combination set comes with rice and miso soup and is good value for the amount of fish they include! Since the sushi selection changes with the season, it's hard to say what will be available but I've found that hamachi is always a good bet. I also like their gari-saba roll (Saba with sushi ginger) which is very refreshing and has a good texture to the sushi. The rice they use is long grain rather than short grain sushi rice so it's a little underwhelming in that regard. Or they might mix in long grain as well to keep costs down. They also don't use fresh wasabi but I wouldn't expect that for the prices. There is a decent selection of sake if that's your thing, and offer them in different sizes as well so you can consume as much or as little as you like.
We got takeouts so the review is about the food only. Overall everything was quite tasty. We especially enjoyed the beef rolls. The portions were definitely on the small side for the price.
Came here on a date and it was a pleasant experience! The place was not packed at all on a Sunday night at 6 pm and we got seated right away. Good: - Super nice servers and the food comes out really fast - The prices are great here - The sushi rolls were all solid - I had the dragon roll and the portreo roll - it was pretty filling as well - Nice clean simple aesthetic Bad: - The sushi wasn't the best I've had, but for the price, it was a great steal! Overall, a great bang for buck place, I'd recommend it for a fast date activity!

Great food, small space with great service. Only thing I can say is the portions were not that big. Everything we ordered tasted delicious though.

Meh. So-so sushi coupled with stiff service. Pretty much what expected for sushi in Potrero, incredibly ordinary. Ihad the Golden Dragon roll (california roll topped with Sustainable salmon, sliced lemon and ponzu sauce) and Potrero roll (spicy tuna topped with sustainable salmon and avocado served with spicy garlic chili sauce). They were both just OK, though the Portrero was marginally better. My wife's Agedashi tofu was good but her veggie sushi rolls were bland. I'd pass, nothing to see here.. July 2015.
The sashimi and nigiri were decent but not as good as expected for the price. The miso soup was inedibly salty, the yellowtail kama tasted like the fish was old and almost gone bad, and they were sold out of multiple regular menu items despite us eat8ng at 530 and the restaurant being empty when we arrived. All around a disappointing experience that I will not be repeating.
Not memorable. Sushi doesn't taste fresh.

Pretty cute place and seems popular but unfortunately I did not like the food. Miso soup was weak, I got the dragon roll which I found undersized, boring, and low on unagi, and the ahi poke uramaki which was barely edible covered with this bitter minced garlic. Tried my friends nigiri which was good, but very underwhelmed by the rolls.
Disappointing is the kindest way to describe their cuisine. Way overpriced for the quality of food. Miso soup was very salty and the sushi was average, but overpriced at $14. Overall nice service, but would not recommend going. Reviews are a bit misleading, I would suggest going to other local sushi restaurants.
I ordered Umi on Too Good to go, thought I may have something small to eat in the office. Turn out I got a plastic bag filled with some raw fish with skin and a dead fish head.
