Thiên Long in San Jose is my mom's favorite restaurant in the entire Bay Area and home of the best bánh bột chiên (Vietnamese Rice Cake) and sizzling grilled fish spring rolls 😍 This was one of our favorite collaborations and a full circle moment. We grew up eating here and had no idea my parents knew the owner. Moments like these make my heart so full. #bayarea #foodie #vietnamese #sanjose #datenight
I highly enjoyed the turmeric fish and was very happy when they were able to adjust the serving size for me to one person. The fish was seasoned perfectly and came with lots of delicious herbs. It was so soft and basically melted in your mouth! The fish sauce and noodles complimented everything very well too. Had to wait a few minutes to get a table but it was such a busy weekend lunch so makes sense. Service was very quick and staff were all super kind!
The service was fantastic. Food was definitely freshly made and served hot. First time and Spouse and shared the Hot Pot, we did the 50/50 Beef and Fish. Portion was large, we had more than enough for 1 person lunch the next day. I think we were given about 20 sheets for wrapping and Large plate of fillers (noodles, perilla, mint, cucumber slices, lettuce and some other greens that I don't know the name of) and sauces too.
The food here is really good. Be ready to come with an empty stomach because the serving are huge. The fish on the hot plate is super yummy and I love that you can make your own goi guon with whatever you like. Remember if you can't eat it all, just make up the left overs and take them home! It gets really busy but you can tell why. Must try!
Thien long had been around for as long as I can remember and the staple of this place is the sizzling fish platter. It comes with an assortment of veggies, mam ruoc (the stinky stinky) sauce, noodles, and rice paper. This platter can serve 2-3 people as it depends how thick your rolls are. I’ve tried a few other dishes over the years but the fish one is the best. Most of the tables will have offer this. Another way I like to eat it is ordering it with half beef so you don’t get tired of the fish. This pls e looks dingy inside but don’t like that fool you. That means the food is great.
Had to try the grilled fish wraps. Totally worth the hype !! I recommend trying out the green leaves separately before hand as they may not suit your palate and hence spoil the wrap. It’s a fun meal experience with your loved ones to bond over DIY wraps. The fish comes in a bed of dill and onion with a flame base . If you want the fire out sooner, please do so as it may char the onions otherwise. Just the grilled fish by itself is so good too. They give a fermented fish sauce with rice crispy. I suggest tasting a drop first. This place is a gem.
What a fun meal! There aren't a lot of Vietnamese restaurants in the bay area that does turmeric fish (cha ca la vong) $33 like Thien Long. It smells great if you let it sit for a bit and let the little fire under the metal plate sizzle the dill and onions table side. You can wrap your own spring rolls (+$3 for rice paper) like Anh Hong in San Francisco. It does come with big pieces of leaf lettuce so the rice paper is not necessary. I liked how it comes with a piece of rice cracker you can put inside the spring roll. The yellow spice turmeric is great for burning fat tissues. But since the fish is fried, it negates the health benefits of this meal. On a side note, we had their seafood crispy egg noodles $16.50 as an appetizer. This was good. I wouldn't come here especially for their crispy noodles. Service was excellent.
Overall: 4.5/5 (dine in) We came here for Mother's Day dinner around 6 PM and it was crowded. We had to wait about 20 minutes before we were seated. The service is a bit slower, & the workers had a bit of an attitude. Pho Ap Chao Bo Don - Crispy Chow Fun With Stir Fried Beef & Vegetables ($16.50): This looks great in picture & in presentation but the taste is mid. The big blocks are pho are fried flat rice noodles. They don't have any flavor ready. The sauce is also mild and just not something I enjoy. Beef was okay too. Bun Cha Ca La Vong - Grilled Fish With Thin Noodle & Vegetables ($32.95): This is meant for 2 people to share; my mom & I shared and we still had leftover. This is our go-to item whenever we come here. The fish was as good as always - the pieces were big, soft, and tasty. I wish they gave a little bit more noodles. We didn't think there was enough so we were mostly just eating the fish with the vegetables. Bun Cha Ha Noi - BBQ Pork & Pork Patties With Thin Noodle ($16.25): The BBQ pork was good but the pork patties were just okay. Gao Viet Kitchen's Bun Cha Co Linh is way better. Banh Bot Chien Trung - Fried Flour Cake With Egg ($11.25): This is also another go-to item whenever we come here. They make the flour cake so crispy. Love the flavors for this appetizer.
CASH ONLY. Wonderful Vietnamese restaurant, the flavors of the grilled meat were amazing. Portions were huge and price was pretty reasonable. The restaurant was packed but no wait. Service was a bit lacking, nobody came to refill my water but that's ok, the food was just awesome and I will absolutely be coming back. The fried shrimp cake was also really good, juicy inside and the bean curd had a great crisp to it. The fish sauce was not overpowering, not too salty, just added really nicely to the flavours. Their desserts looked great but I'm not sure how people have room to eat any after their main dish. There are also a lot of other places in the same plaza to get dessert if you wanted something different. Everything from fresh fruits, to mochi donuts, taiyaki ice cream, boba, etc.
This Vietnamese restaurant, which in my view reflects some Chinese influence, boasts an excellent (but non-traditional) Cha Ca La Vong dish featuring deep fried fish pieces on a bed of dill and onions, augmented by rice paper and fermented fish sauce for dipping (traditionally, Cha Ca La Vong is not deep fried). Other dishes we samples are alright, again not made the traditional way but tasty nonetheless. For example, Bot Chien traditionally are square cubed of fried dough that are crispy on the outside and soft inside, whereas Thien Long's Bot Chien is served as an omelette. Parking is plentiful and service is good.

The chef’s special beef stew is flavorful but slightly oily, and vegetarian options are limited. Service is friendly, with complimentary rice crackers and shrimp sauce as a starter. While some diners wish for more whole fish options, the DIY grilled fish wraps make for a unique and enjoyable meal.
Plenty of seats inside but a little cramped. Very friendly service, free rice cracker and shrimp sauce as a starter. Big portions and generous amount of leafy veggies/herbs. Their signature is the 2-person fried fish (cha ca la voung) - came out on a metal grill with fish filet chucks on a bed of herbs and onions. The fish was fried well, juicy and fresh. I was expecting a whole fish instead of chucks to get more flavor of the fish instead of breading and herbs. Tasted like it was basa? Fun to wrap it in lettuce and mint and cucumber that came on the side. Had to add some sriracha and fish sauce. Also got the chef special beef stew w/ rice noodles (Hu tieu bo kho) - mild flavor, but a bit too oily. Thicker rice noodles were great to slurp with the soup, tender, slow cooked beef cubes. Food was ok, but service was fast. Good vibes with many locals.
Yummy lunch. Stopped by to have their famous grill fish. It was quite busy when we arrived. We got the table right away. The interior is standard. We ordered spicy and sour seafood rice noodle soup, grill fish, and chow fun with stir fry seafood and veggie. All are yummy, and the portion is generous. The vietnsmese coffee is also good. It is not too sweet. The highlight dish is the grill fish. It is for 2 people but it can feed more. Service is quick. It is good for the group. It is cash only. It has an atm machine inside.
Ordered the #34B, the same thing everyone orders from this place. The fish on a searing hot plate. Comes with grilled vegetables cooking on it, rice wraps, vermicelli noodles, lettuce, mint, dill, etc. $30 and is supposed to feed two people. That said, two people who eat a decent amount are likely to not feel full on this without an extra dish, especially since fish is a "lighter" protein. It's not a cheap meal, but they are consistent, quick, and it's good. I come down to SJ to eat here a couple times a year. Recommended.
We tried their Banh Xeo bc someone told us it's better than the other well known place nearby. Their BX is huge but the ratio of Rau to BX is way too low. Not enough lettuce to wrap the BX and lacking in variety. Also way too much bean sprouts in BX fillings. Still a good restaurant for other dishes however
Their specialty, Cha Ca La Vong, which is hard to find, is pretty good. I also enjoy their Bun Rieu with snails. However, the Bun Ga Nuong (Vermicelli grilled chicken with veggies) was a big disappointment. This dish is supposed to be a noodle salad with lots of veggies but there was just some shredded lettuce, no mint or mung sprouts. The chicken was too salty to eat and not seasoned properly. Why is this subpar dish even offered? Best not to experiment here and stick to their specialty.
We got the fish and dill rice paper roll, alright but not enough dill or onions. Onions burned onto the hot plate and more vegetables was extra cost. Not the worst cha ca la vong place but not the best either. We also got tom yum style soup. Too much msg, but did come w a lot of meatballs, cabbage, some fish. Nice enough.
We sometime go there and eat our favorite A3 item. It’s not so good this time the food was over deep fried. We order Banh Xeo sometime but this time the waitress charge us extra three dollar for a few lettuce. What a ripe off. They did not disclose to us that it’s extra charge. They just add $3.00 on the receipt when we excepting to get without charge. Banh Xeo is taste ok this time. Pho Beef was less meat also the broth taste like water down no good at all. Disappointed with the dine in.
