Food was amazing, staff was very friendly and helpful to those of us that have no knowledge of what to order. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I'm beginning to think that San Mateo has better Japanese food than San Jose. We tried a new sushi called honey crunch, It's a new favorite. 😋 The teriyaki chicken and salmon were juicy. We left full and happy. A must try❣️

My favorite is the snow dragon roll. So fresh and always delicious in there. Spicy tuna was delicious also. Service is great and price is very good too. Also enjoy the tempura veggies.

Fantastic. Unique rolls, tasted delicious. 49ers was my favorite, with the lemon on top. Also had the red evil and honey walnut. Miso soup and seaweed salad were good too.

Totally amazing sushi. Definitely try the Dragon Roll (sometimes they have a special that has crab on top of it- it's also a must try). Great selection of rolls- especially if you like Eel. Nice selection of drinks- including a imported Japanese Rice beer (delicious). Great prices - they have a nice happy hour special (food/drink) everyday of the week.

The best restaurant in the Laurelwood plaza, which means you need to be prepared to wait during the lunch time rush. Good sushi selection, lunch menu, and they're pretty fast in getting you in/out to turn the table

For starters, being a new resident within their second year in San Mateo & now attending CSM for some courses I must say how pleased I am to find a gem of a restaurant such as Shiki. For it's convenience and location being an approximate 12 minute walk from campus I intend on visiting again on special occasion. The service from staff was direct and accomadating as they allowed my cousin and I to enjoy our dinner over the course of our visit which spanned for almost more than an hour. This alone sets the tone of the atmosphere as the restaurant is moderately quaint with enough space to host a party of 4-6 comfortably according to the layout and tableing I could vaguely go over again in my mind. Now, for the food commentary. The chirashi was a great choice for the night!A well displayed array of fresh fish placed on top of a balance of light seasoning topped sushi rice & garnish of thin clear noodles that could've been substituted from tamago kinshi. The hamachi was the highlight due to the robust sweetness that was propelled through the natural texture of the fish. The maguro being a typical favorite of mine did not disappoint at all! Overall, the service was great as well as the atmosphere being perfect for intimate and relaxed occasions with loved ones. Not only was the chirasu fresh but the pork tonkatsu paired with a beautifully chopped sweet citrus fruit on the side among a fresh romaine leaflet embedded underneath was simple and clean. Thinly sliced and fried to a crunch with ease. Thank you to the wonderful staff employed at Shiki! I most definitely want to thank the chef & kitchen crew for the delicious meals made tonight. Blessings!

Stumbled upon this sushi place while in the area and it was one of the best I’ve ever been to! Got a variety of menu items and each one was absolutely amazing. Their portions are huge and the flame roll we got was on fire, made for a cute picture and video.

This is the most kid friendly sushi restaurant I've been to. The kids menu is great. So much great stuff in the bento box. The honey crunch roll was amazing. It was like honey walnut shrimp in sushi form. The lion king was also very good.

I get unagi and it's always fresh, prepared well and I can taste it in the food. I get sushi rolls and I can generally finish one, take one to go for home/breakfast. Their draft Sapporo is perfect, cold and a full glass. Service is fast. You need to ask for the check or they won't mention it for a long time. I get "please-no wasani nor ginger, not even on the plate" and that happens 95% of the time here over the past 5 years. So that's better than most restaurants. I've ordered custom rolls and they turned out perfect and accurate. Good place for a date. Booths are secluded, you feel far from other guests. (I suspect it would be possible to seat a larger party. In the middle with tables pushed together, maybe 10-12? Call and ask.)

Criminally underrated sushi spot. We went during lunch rush, had no issue with parking, and got immediately greeted and seated by a super kind staff. We got a Spicy tuna roll, Rainbow roll(combo), and chicken katsu (combo). The fish was melt in your mouth tender and incredibly fresh, and was by far the BEST katsu I’ve had in the are. All of this food, which fed and filled 3 people, was a mere 35 dollars. The quality and price are the best you can get in the Bay Area by far, and I HIGHLY recommend eating here. Awesome place.

Had a huge hankering for sushi after getting a few things from the Whole Foods next door. I popped in around the middle of the lunchtime rush, so I had expected to wait a few minutes at the least. I gladly accepted to grab a seat at the counter since it was just myself. Ordered the Chirashi lunch and got a small salad and bowl of miso soup before it came. Always a good choice for anyone who prefers their sashimi and rice separately. The service was great, despite it being busy. The waiter checked up on me every once in a while and refilled my beverage. A nice atmosphere and wonderful staff will encourage me to return soon. One of the recommendations for this restaurant was their honey crunch roll. Honey walnut prawns...in sushi? Yes, I'll definitely have to come back for that.

Very good Japanese restaurant. Excellent sushi, sashimi and rolls. Great bentos. My favorite version of Seafood udon. Tempura light and not oily. Have a number of varieties of Saki. Service is always good. Gets VERY busy at lunch and in the evenings and there's only a couple of chairs right a the door to wait. They have a sushi bar, so that's always an option.

Great little place. Been here twice. The chefs greet you as you are walking in. I didnt notice it because of a loud diesel passing by out of place but the chefs greet everyone as the come in, even the obvious deliveryman that was lost. I should know by now, this is just a standard in japanese culture and i should keep this knowledge with me when walking into Japanese establishments. The environment is nice. Feels a little cluttered but i definitely dont sense it when having a seat. I love looking at the booth side. I believe it is called "Izakaya" decor. It is a cozy feel, especially in booth. The Bathroom is western style, modern, and clean. The hostess is very sweet and endeering, always smiling. I ordered a sushi lunch combo and very well worth the price. Along with miso and salad you get to choose two fish items, which i went with salmon nigiri and spicy tuna roll. The rice portion was standard, the salmon was doubled and doubled again. Ill attach a photo but you know how other sushi places charge six bucks for two pieces? This place basically gives you 8 pieces of fish as it basically covers the rice entirely. Again, the rice was a normal portion. The spicy tuna looks like it was handled a little too heavily but the taste was there. Is this something I can always expect? Probably not, just extra salmon maybe paired with an aggressive sushi chef for the day, but I am coming back for sure!

Very nice neighborhood Japanese restaurant run by Chinese. Food is pretty authentic and good. We've been coming here for about 10 years whenever we are in the neighborhood. There is another restaurant in San Mateo near Whole foods. I prefer this one.

Nice little sushi restaurant with about 40 seats. The fish was fresh, and their various rolls and sashimi pieces were quite tasty. We just found the amount of food could be a bit more. For example, their California roll consisted of only 6 pieces. The staff were pleasant, but the service was quite slow. In fairness, every seat was taken, and a few guests were waiting to be seated, so they were quite busy. Overall, for the quality of their food, the price was fair. We would definitely go again.

Food here is great. Best agedashi tofu I've ever had, and I love the red evil roll! Spicy tuna rolls are fresh and delicious. The guys working to the sushi are super nice, and if you're at the bar, put out good food really quickly. They do roll out this cart to buss the tables. Clanging, banging a cart right next to people eating, with rags and cleaning products hanging off it. Just...super odd. But if you can have a laugh about the cart, the food is totally worth it.

It's not the best sushi, or food, but it's the closest in location. The teriyaki sauce is disgusting & slimy. The sashimi is not that good. The rolls are ok.

B

Not bad at all. And for some reason they have the most amazing lemonade (really! It's weird!) Anyhow while it won't be confused with Godzilla in the city for example, it is a big step above the sushi you're going to get at a supermarket. I used to like the place down at Carlmont a bit better but they changed ownership and raised prices so we now prefer Shiki. Nothing fancy to look at inside, but a wide variety of rolls and very reasonably priced. It's now our local go to place for sushi (and cray good lemonade!)

M
Marcel Bouma

The katsu donburi was bland and the salad was an uninspiring collection of lettuce with a cherry tomato sliced in half. The wakame salad was also certainly not homemade and solidly mediocre.

J
Jérémie Meyer de Ville

Sushi are on the average side. Don't show up after 9pm on a Friday... you will know you are not welcome.

D
Desmond

I asked for the most filling meal they had. A beef teriyaki was what the server recommended. Paying $30 for a meal for a small bowl of rice, soup and salad with a decent amount of meat is a unfair. The quality could have been better. The meat was overcooked. Portions are completely unfair. Gave an extra star because the manager was reasonable and gave me an extra portion of rice and soup. I'd go somewhere else if you're looking to fill up. Or consider getting two sushi rolls instead.

You have to be as polite to couriers as you are to customers. You say "the product is not ready, wait outside", do you tell customers to wait outside? no, you're not saying.

I ordered from DoorDash and I was more than halfway through my salad when I found a thick BLACK hair even though my hair is light and thin. I am absolutely disgusted. The food was mediocre at best and the hair made it even worse.

This review is not about food service. Service has been top performance! Rather feedback about customer relations. I wish this can be more positive. I had an unfortunate experience as a super regular customer of many years. I sat at the sushi bar and the owner was making sushi that night for three nights. I was not greeted nor even acknowledged!! A customer sits directly 2ft in front our your sushi station and you do not even acknowledge? To me this was disrespectful as a regular customer or if I was not regular. By the way; this happened THREE times and on the third time I as the customer had initiated a greeting. Too busy to take 3 seconds to say Hi? I never felt welcomed. I should have left but I stayed as a customer who appreciated the service staff. Note: In Japan, sushi chefs will always acknowledge or smile at respected customers who support their restaurant. Actually this is simple basic human respect. Summary: Shiki needs major customer service adjustments.
