Tiffins taste here are good and we liked chutneys the most. They have good collection of these chutneys and we need not depend on them to serve. They are placed in four-cups on the table. Karam podi and Sambar is also available. Serving etiquette was good and they are always reachable. With decent prices and enough parking lot, this can be a good place to dine in.
Delicious South Indian place. We tried ulavacharu dosa and podi onion masala dosa. Both were great options with the right amount of spices. Dosa comes with sambhar and four different types of chutneys. Filter coffee was great too, thankfully sugar was on the side and not added to the coffee. Prices were very reasonable. They have plenty of tables, there was no wait time on a Saturday evening. They also sell sweets, spices and snacks boxes at the counter.
No words to describe I felt like eating my mom made tiffin. Almost ordered everything on the menu on my 2 visits Everything tastes great and fresh. The staff was so quick and helpful in managing very busy tables they are doing great job. Special mention Podi idly it is the best idly I had in states the gee the podi and idly just taste perfect along with chutneys and sambar. If you want to feel home food I highly highly recommend this place. So visit eat happiness food enjoy
One of the best Mysore Bonda you’ll have in bay area. This dish is popular for a reason. Menu looks vast and good. Parking space is decent and this place gets busy on weekends and holidays so you can reserve your space online or at the counter. Mvp is Mysore Bonda Poori with Masala is very good Kara dosa is awesome Ulavacharu onion dosa is good Would certainly recommend this place for breakfast
This place one of the best dosa in Bay Area. The peanut and coconut chutney are next level.
Visited the place on a Sunday afternoon for late brunch. There was no wait. Loved the idli and sambar here. Size of vadas were small though. We also tried masala podi dosa. It was light not filled with ghee/oil and the podi was tasty 😋 We had tea as well. That was good. They also sell podi, sweets here. Tried the mysore pak later, it was okay!
One of the best South Indian vegetarian restaurants in the Bay Area. Regularly have a long waiting time due to the rush even though they have a decent amount of seating. My favourites are Rava masala dosa and Poori Chana. The podi items are usually very spicy, some might like it but not for everyone. Their ginger chutney is very unique. They are also open usually till 9:30pm. Parking is usually tricky and gets crowded during peak hours. You need to go and make a reservation in an online queue. Service is not their strong point. Sometimes you have to wait a long time before anyone comes to check on you after seating. No resemblance of any sort of professionalism. But the food is good.
LOVED THIS PLACE, WOULD DEFINITELY COME AGAIN! We tried the following items: Medu Vada Ghee Podi Onion Masala Dosa Filter Coffee Mango Lassi (From my experience in Texas) I have never tried SOO GOOOOD Medu Vada in the US. It was on par (if not better) than the Medu Vada I have had in India. I couldn't be more joyful. Ghee Podi Onion Masala Dosa was fantastic as well but I think my taste buds couldn't handle the Podi spices as it was unbearable for me as I reached the masala in the middle. Next time I would order the same without Podi. I loved all of the chutneys (was blown away by the peanut chutney and tomato chutney) and sambar. Couldn't get enough of it. Service: 10/10. Staff is extremely polite, gentle, sweet and humble. Even if the food had not been good I would have still come again for the service of the staff. [We had ordered filter coffee and we kinda didn't like it as it wasn't similar to the last time, the staff replaced it twice and even when we didn't like it they didn't charge us for it.] The Ambience is good enough and will make you feel like you're in an Indian family restaurant, nothing fancy and that's what makes it feel like home.
Amazing place for south Indian food. We went for breakfast. Tried onion uttapam, ghee idli and mango lassi. Both the dishes were super tasty and delicious including all of the chutneys. Prices were reasonable comparatively. However, be prepared to wait as it gets crowded during peak hours. Would definitely like to visit again.
Good food, no fluff, quick service at an affordable price. You just sit and someone will come to get your order and food shows up in 5 minutes. (As expected, 5 items are ready and your dosa is just made order). They have bottled water at the table too. Kudos to the management for running a nice spot for such foods. Hope to come back again.
Ulavcharu Tiffins in San Francisco is a delightful restaurant that specializes in serving authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine. This eatery is particularly known for its scrumptious breakfast offerings, which include a variety of traditional dishes that will leave your taste buds craving for more. Start your day with their delicious Bisibele Baath, a hearty rice dish cooked with lentils and vegetables, offering a perfect blend of spices and flavors. Pair it with their soft and fluffy idlis and crispy vadas, which are ideal for dipping into an array of chutneys and sambar. The Ghee Roast Masala is another highlight, featuring a crispy dosa filled with spicy potato masala and generously drizzled with aromatic ghee, making it an irresistible treat. Ulavcharu Tiffins also takes pride in offering a selection of traditional South Indian powders, such as Kobbari Podi (coconut powder), Kandi Podi (lentil powder), and Gongura Podi (sorrel leaf powder). These flavorful powders can be sprinkled over rice or used as accompaniments to enhance your meal experience. This restaurant is a must-visit for Andhrites and people from Telangana when they are in San Francisco, as it brings the authentic taste of their home cuisine to the USA. The welcoming ambiance and the delicious, mouth-watering dishes make Ulavcharu Tiffins a favorite spot for anyone craving genuine South Indian vegetarian food.
This is a Tiffins Heaven!! I give it a five star rating!! We ordered Punugulu (not pictured). The dosas were good (wish they served them hot, which is an issue at most Indian restaurants) and the chutneys had the perfect blend of taste and spice. The thought of their ginger chutney makes me drool 🤤 I hope they maintain the quality. Seating wise: it’s crowded and feels cramped. For an Indian restaurant serving tiffins, should have a washbasin in close proximity for handwashing. The bathroom is outside and not clean and that too in the rain makes it undesirable to use.
If you are looking for the best dosas in Bay area and authentic tiffin feels, this is it!!! Went late for dinner around 9 pm and people were still coming in. Took almost 15 minutes wait to get a table but totally worth it. Love the bibe inside the restaurant bustling with people, takes me straight home.
In my humble opinion, the litmus test of any restaurant that specializes in South Indian cuisine is the taste of its sambar. It's the aroma of the herbs, the texture from the veggies, and that distinct taste of sambar masala that can make your mouth water at any given time. I was fortunate enough to taste some amazing places that serve this southern elixir in India, and this place comes the closest to the authentic Mangalore taste. This place deserves all the praise solely on the merit of its sambar, which is why I unabashedly frequent it. Along with the sambar, I would recommend trying the rava dosa, vada sambar, and rava kesari to round out your meal like a true connoisseur. And, of course, you can't forget the famous Bangalore filter coffee to top it all off. The only downsides are the atrocious wait times and limited parking, but the food more than makes up for it. I highly recommend this place in the Bay Area for anyone who craves South Indian cuisine.
Probably the best Dosa I’ve had so far in the area. Had the kara ghee onion masala dosa and it was extremely well done. The potato filling was spicy. The Dosa itself was crispy and perfectly fermented. The onions added a iced crunchiness, and the spice mixture added a nice heat to the Dosa. It was pretty huge, and honestly we struggled to finish it. Had the filter coffee to go with it, and it honestly wasn’t the best. I’ve had better in bay area. The restaurant was quite full, and the seating is plenty, but quite basic. Don’t go here for the ambience, but go here just for the food.
Good spot for South Indian breakfast food. This place gets very busy on weekends, so plan accordingly. Food taste is authentic and very close to what I had back home in Andhra Pradesh. Podi Idly and Masala dosa are my favorite items on their menu. Service staff are friendly. ambiance is a bit odd at night but ok during the daytime.
One of the busiest places , took some time for me to get a table and my ordered dishes. I tried ulavacharu masala dosa , punugulu and poori . I really liked the dosa , it was crisp and roasted perfectly, must try!! The size of the dosas and uthapam are damn good for the price you pay for it, and they are tasty and satisfying too. Must visit place if you are a fan of Indian breakfast.
Podi Idly here is unbelievable! They’ve perfected the recipe so much that I almost stopped eating podi idly at other restaurants lol :) Service is amazing as well — they are pretty good at handling the crowd. Chutneys and sambar are very unique. I actually love this place. Keep going here again and again. I also love their mysore masala dosa.
This is where I ate my best dosa. I always come here for Kara masala dosa and ghee podi idli (idli will melt in your mouth). They give you as much sambhar as you want which I like.
Everything came out fast and piping hot. The pongal was creamy and filling. The onion pakora, the dosa, the uppatham, and podi idly were all perfectly crispy. I recommend you dine in. It tastes so much better this way. The spiciness of the podi idly was perfect 👌 this is probably the best one I have had for awhile. They usually taste quite dry to me. I really want to try the mirchi bajji or maybe the cut mirchi next time.
Great Telugu food. Feels like India. It’s almost always crowded. You have to check in and wait for sometime to get a table. Plenty of parking is available. They have snacks and bakery items as well. They give you like 5 chutneys with any dish. Chutneys taste so good. Good atmosphere and good service.
The best tiffins i ever had in US/Bayarea ! Highly recommend ! You will not get dissapointed ! We tried the below Mysore bonda 10/10 Idly 10/10 Vada 9/10 Masala dosa 10/10 Pesarattu 8/10 Poori 10/10 Bobbatlu 10/10 They also have Gangaraju palakova which is very famous in Rajamundry, India :)
We wanted to have some Southern Indian food for breakfast today morning but didn't wanted to drive far off so choose UlavacharuU Tiffins. We have tried many times before but always it was Togo so thought of having a sit down experience this time. Since we were the first customer to the restaurant the whole restaurant was empty so we can choose any seating except the last area they are been reserved for family ( I think they mean family with kids) . We ordered some breakfast items- 1) Idly - the No of idlies in this plate are 3 to accompany it comes with Sambhar & 3 different chutneys. It took some time almost 20-25 mins to come since it was being freshly made as per the staff ( David) who informed us when ordering we didn't mind to wait. My husband got the chance to read his novel & I was enjoying some Bollywood songs . When the Idli came I didn't see any coconut chutney so asked David about it , he informed only with Dosa they give coconut chutney but he graciously agreed to give us some. Idli was piping hot & soft enjoyed it with all chutneys & sambhar. Their chutneys are really good - spicy tomato & Red Chilli chutney , Peanut chutney , Ginger & jaggery ( unrefined cane sugar) this is my favorite so far I have not seen in any Bay Area restaurants & last but not the least coconut chutney it was made with fresh coconut (not descicated or coconut powder which many restaurants make it) we enjoyed every bite of this as well. 2) Idly Vada combo we choose 3 Idli & 1 Vada- This was also very good pipping hot Idli & Vada it was freshly made . Their Vada was freshly made & crunchy. We shared the 1 Vada. 3) Ghee Masala Dosa - again very flavorful due to ghee ( clarified butter) can't go wrong with it !!! The main reason we went for sit down is whenever we do Togo especially with Dosa the crispy Dosa turns soggy/ soft by the time we reach home . So we're really looking forward to have it. The Ghee Dosa when served we didn't see any Masala ( potato filling) which my husband loves it so asked about it ... David informed us they have to remake the potato batch again from starch since the early batch became very salty so it will take time , we were bummed but couldn't wait that long so agreed to eat it with chutney & sambhar. As we were enjoying the Dosa, David came back again & apologized for it again & comped us either with Medhu Vada or Idli so we choose Medhu Vada. We loved their customer service. 4) Mysore Dosa - it was good on its own as well as their chutneys & sambhar. It's been ages since I have eaten it , It's a childhood nostalgia. I grew up eating Ram Ashraya ( Matunga Bombay) restaurant Mysore Dosa so nothing comes closer to that taste for me ... We ended up our breakfast with 1 Filter Coffee it was very strong but good. Overall we loved the food & will come back again in a heartbeat.
Functional place with exceptional food. Somehow poori kurma is hard for many restaurants to get right, but this place nails it. The poori was fluffy, yet crunchy at the right places and the kurma was tastefully spiced. The ulavacharu masala dosa caught my eye, but i think it was more marketing than anything else. It was still really tasty with the sambar carrying the dish forward. I would have liked more masala per square foot of dosa, but it's not a big deal in the end. I will be back to check out the other dishes.
Yumm..Yumm...Yumm.... Tiffins are so yummy that we tasted almost all of the items on the menu. It felt like as if we are eating Andhra style breakfast in India. 4 types of chutneys, sambar. Prices are reasonable not costlier. They as well sell indian sweets and snacks that are fresh and delicious as well. Travelling all the way from Seattle and eating over there made us forgot the pain of drive.. 😄 Staff are super firendly and ofocurse it is crowded on weekends. Definitely will NOT disappoint your wait time.
The restaurant was bustling with a long wait during weekend lunch hours, but the service was impressively swift. The podi dosa was delightfully spicy, and despite the heat, I thoroughly enjoyed it. As for the mango lassi, it's a favorite of mine that I indulge in several times a week.
The best dosa I’ve had in the Bay Area. Their Kara dosa’s are super spicy and their masala is a great add to any dish. The rava dosa are crispy and really good too, highly recommend this. Super authentic spot - especially their chutneys and sambar. Gets really busy for lunch on weekends, would prepare for a wait time!
I had a great experience at this restaurant. The tiffins are really delicious and freshly made every time. Each item has its own unique taste, and the quality is consistently good. The jalebi is a big hit its crispy, sweet, and served perfectly. It’s definitely something everyone should try!
The best South Indian breakfast I've ever had in the bay area. Their pav bhaji dosa is a must try dish and it is only available on Saturday's and Sunday's :-( and madurai malli dosa is my personal favorite.
Ulavacharu has been my absolute favorite ever since I first started eating here back in 2018, and it continued to be my go-to spot until 2021. After moving away from the city, I honestly wondered if the taste I remembered was nostalgia. I recently came back and I can confidently say it’s exactly the same. No drop in quality, no compromise on flavor. Very few places manage to maintain this level of consistency over years, and Ulavacharu has absolutely nailed it.
I have never had better breakfast items anywhere in US than here. Period.
I recently visited a fantastic South Indian restaurant and had the idlis and dosa—both were absolutely delicious! The idlis were soft and fluffy, paired perfectly with chutneys and sambar, while the dosa was crispy and flavorful. Chole puri was decent. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. Highly recommend for anyone who loves authentic South Indian cuisine! I loved the ginger chutney the most!!
Went in for an evening snack and all items were good including dosa, mirchi bajji, tea, idli/vada/pongal. Restrooms are outside with a code but very dirty. The ambience is quite simple and bit too dirty and might need timely cleanup; we even saw cockroaches on the floor which is bit unsightly. They do sell snacks and sweets. Plenty of parking.
Genuinely authentic South Indian food. I had the Idly and Vada combo and they were fresh, soft and delicious. The chutneys and Sambhar tasted great and did not have a stale, cold stored vibe that’s normally found at tiffin places. 100% would recommend the filter coffee - it’s a must have. The whole experience transports you to southern India!
Authentic South Indian food. Every item we ordered was perfect and full of flavors. Service was quick and the best part was that they serve ginger chutney too along with coconut, peanut and tomato. I fell in love with ginger chutney back in Hyderabad and very rarely anybody serves it here in the US. So it was a very pleasant surprise. You can ask for chutney refills. Please make sure you ask for only what you will finish. Let's not waste food. The podi idli just melts in your mouth. The chana/chole were really good. We ordered filter coffee but may be it wasn't the authentic filter coffee as you would expect. My husband said it tasted like nescafe. But it was piping hot which we appreciated. Definitely coming back.
I LOVE their Podi Idli!! It's soaked in ghee and so delicious!! And their crispy dosas that hit just right. (Probably favor rawa dosa the most) and don't even get me started on the chutneys... coconut, tomato, peanut, ginger, each one was a flavor bomb. If you know, you know. If you don’t—go. 😋 PS- try their mango lassi too, it's better than a lot of places
Just the best place to have a great South Indian breakfast!! Absolutely loved their dosas and coffee. Ghee Podi Dosa, Onion Rava Dosa, Wada are too good and must be tried! Service was swift and good. It gets super busy usually on the weekends. Overall, my go-to place for a quick and delicious breakfast. They also sell pickles and powders along with Indian sweets and namkeen.
Very good restaurant Great taste most dishes , good service . Not so clean BTW Always crowded Ordered Khara Masala Dosa Onion tomato chilli uttapam Podi idli Mysore bonda Filter coffee The Dosa and utthapam were excellent The podi idli was great The mysore bonda was not good Filter coffee was decent Highly recommend the place for vegetarians
Great food. The ghee kara masala dosa was delightful and spicy as expected. Masala bonda was great too. The highlight for me was their sweet ginger chutney. I'm usually not a fan of anything sweet with my dosa but this chutney was great. Tastes like sweet pachadi. Sambar and other chutneys were good too.
This restaurant blew me away with their authentic, flavorful food, generous portion, vegan menu, and super affordable and reasonable prices! I'm a fan of Indian food and this place has become one of my top favorite Indian restaurants to go to in the Bay Area! I came on a Saturday at 1pm and there was a long line of people waiting outside. You can get on the waiting list online and they'll text you when it's your turn. Parking was a bit tricky but there were free street parkings. The turnover rate in the parking lot was fast though. Many parking spots opened up within 5 minutes and I was able to find a great spot. As soon as you stepped inside the restaurant, you'll be greeted with delicious smells of the all the spices that make Indian food so delicious and welcoming. Our server was quick to get our orders. After some debating, I went with the Podi Ghee Masala Dosa while my friend ordered Kara Masala Dosa. These dosas were on the spicier side and we both loved it! OMG the dosas blew me away!!! They were crispy but chewy and had that exquisite balance between an explosion of flavors and the rich textures in your mouth! The dosas came with a small bowl of soup and 4 different type of dipping sauces. My friend and I devoured our dosas and we were extremely happy and full at the end. While you're here, try their coffee and chai tea as well! Both are phenomenally out of this world! I'm Vietnamese so I have high standards for my coffees and teas and this place did not disappoint! If you need to go wash your hands afterward, the restroom is outside the restaurant, on the right. It was kept clean and tidy enough during my visit. Overall, lovely experience and I'm glad to add UlavacharU Tiffins to my list of awesome and authentic Indian restaurants in the South Bay. Highly recommend :)

Best place if you are fond of South Indian food. Their sambar is awesome. One should try the hot pongal here. Also the filter coffee is good.

Expect a wait time of 15-30 mins for a table during peak hours The food is awesome, and our go-to place to take our out of state guests for some scrumptious south indian food.
This is by far the best South Indian tiffin place I’ve found in Bay Area. The food was very flavorful and the chutneys were amazing. They have coconut, peanut, ginger and I guess peanut chutney. I cannot talk enough about them. Loved it with dosa and Mysore bonda. Madras Paratha and kurma is a must try!!! The kurma is not very spicy and has the perfect taste. Will definitely be a regular here and I’m sad it took me so long to find this place.
We ordered Kara Masala Dosa, Rava Dosa, Parotha with Korma , mirchi Bhaji, masala dosa, idli (not pictured), and Podi Masala Dosa. Among all of them, the idli was the tasting the best. They were soft, massive, and extremely filling. It was the best among all the dishes. The parotha was very nice along with the raita and the korma. The korma wasn’t spicy, and tasted good. The masala dosa tasted good, but the aloo masala was very less, and was just chunks of potato. The masala was that way in the Kara masala dosa as well. The Kara was too salty and couldn’t eat the whole thing. It did taste good, if it wasn’t too salty. The cut mirchi that I got was too spicy, and burned my mouths, though all weren’t that way. The rava dosa was thin and crispy. They were generous with the chutneys and also gave us some extra when asked. The coconut and the palli chutney were good. Personally the ginger chutney was my favorite, though not everyone liked it. We also took some snacks while going out. The chekkalu were the best and tasted great. The absolute best was the palakova which I haven’t eaten that tasty since I was in India. We ate the entire box in a day, as it tasted beyond amazing. The one bad thing about this restaurant is the inaccessible bathrooms. To wash your hands or use the restroom you need to exit the restaurant go out, and come back in. The bathrooms were disgusting and very dirty with no toilet paper or paper towels (at least on the day we were there). If you are around in Sfo or in SJo this is a place to definitely crave your Desi food cravings. Will come back, despite the bathroom issues.
THIS IS A GO TO PLACE FOR ME. It's always some good amount of wait here since their service is sort of meh but the FOOD? It's really good. I have been here like 10-15 times now (as of today Oct 2023) and the flavors of the chutneys & dosas & wadas have been consistently great. I finally decided to update my review here. I highly recommend this place for your Dosa and all south Indian breakfast food cravings. They also have a small sweets section. Their Butterscotch bite is my favorite. It's a very genuine taste of butterscotch, which has been otherwise hard to find in other places. Highly recommend pretty much everything except the onion rings in the appetizer section. Have tried everything at this point.
Authentic south Indian cuisine with a variety of options to choose from. Decent dining space however during peak hours, can get congested. Service was good and we loved the food overall. They also serve several Indian sweets and nakeens. Has decent parking space and restrooms are outside the main hall.
Ullavacharu Tiffins has become our go-to spot for brunch almost every Tuesday, and it never disappoints! My husband usually switches between the Mysore Masala Dosa and the Poori with Chana, both of which are outstanding choices. The Poori is light and fluffy, while the chana is flavorful and well-seasoned. The Kara Masala Dosa is my absolute favorite—crispy, spicy, and filled with a delicious potato masala. I always get complimentary extra sambar! :) Last time, I asked for the masala on the side so they could make the dosa extra crispy, and I absolutely loved it. We often pair our meals with a refreshing mango lassi or a strong filter coffee, depending on our mood, and both are always top-notch. The staff here are friendly, and the service is quick. The atmosphere is casual and perfect for a relaxed brunch. We always leave satisfied and looking forward to our next visit! Note: The restroom situation could be improved. There is a restroom outside the restaurant, but it’s not well maintained, which can be a bit inconvenient. If you’re craving authentic South Indian food, Ullavacharu Tiffins is a must-try. Highly recommend!
Visited this place recently when I was on a trip to California. They have a decent ambience but their restrooms were not good. We went there as a family for an evening tiffin and ordered standard south Indian tiffins. Loved their poori and aloo sabzi. All their chutneys were great. The vada was not up to the standard. But in general, it was good food. The service was quick and the staffs were helpful.
Went on weekend...was bit crowded, difficult to get parking spot.I had to be in queue for 15-20 minutes to get a table. It offers several varieties of dosas and other Andhra tiffins.Quality of food was very good .They offered 3-4 Chutneys, people coming for first time would enjoy Allam( Ginger) chutney for sure.
Best place for dosas and South Indian snacks in Bay Area Queue system is great, service is excellent . The lady at the store front is respectful They have sweets that you can buy while you wait :-) Dosas and snacks are tasty, looks like a popular place as it was crowded on weekday evenings . Can get crowded with waiting times during weekends The service is pretty decent given how busy they can get and no one is rushing you out Off late the food is become very spicy especially the chutneys ☹️
This place offers an authentic and satisfying South Indian breakfast experience. The dosas are crisp and generously filled, the idlis are soft and fluffy, and the vadas are perfectly fried with a good crunch. Each dish comes with a variety of chutneys and piping hot sambar that pack a punch in both flavor and freshness. The presentation is clean and traditional, and everything tastes perfect. It’s a great spot for anyone craving hearty, flavorful tiffins in a casual setting.
We went there for the first time and it was quite busy during the morning and many people were waitin to get seated. But I would say very soon we got the table and our server. Ordered mysore bonda, podi idly ( loved the flavor basically idly in some ghee) and onion masala dosa along with masala tea. The order came out pretty quick for us and each item was equally good.It is worth the price and reasonable in Bay Area. Will be visiting again soon!!
They serve the best snacks like bonda , stuffed mirchi bajji etc. The dosas and idlis are okay but give a variety bunch of flavourful chutneys. Would not recommend Bisibele bath . Rava dosa and Puri is again worth the try
A very nice south indian restaurant with good service. I love their kara masala dosa. It is on the spicier side, so if you are a spice lover definitely order that :) Their coffee is really good. Special mention to their chutneys.

Extensive buffet , not sure its worth the wait though ... but definitely worth trying once . Lots of seating and staff do their best with a place thats always crowded .
Onion Dosa was tasty. Idlis were ok too. Sambar was average. Sitting- ambience decent too.
The food was excellent and the service was great. The only issue was finding the hand wash area.. it wasn’t easy to locate, and when we did, it wasn’t in good condition. Even though we enjoyed everything else, ending the visit this way affected the overall experience. Edit(after 3 months) Still the wash area is stinky and unhygienic, I know you ppl might get your profits well.. but the way it seems is you guys(owners/managers) stop caring about customer experience.. once they finish the meal and payment is done.. 🤷🏻♀️Unless some inspection happens and they seize your place for a day or two, for you to realize it’s importance..
We were disappointed with the food. Had tried earlier and thought would give another try. I ordered masala pessarattu and it was super oily and potatoes were not cooked well. We also ordered idli Vada combo and felt Vada were undercooked and idli wasn't as soft. Onion pakoras were decent. I'd not come here again. I like their original restaurant but this one definitely disappointing. One more thing to look out for is their restrooms are outside of the restaurant and are not clean. Unfortunately, employees use the same washroom.
Ordered masala Dosa, podi masala Dosa, regular idly, chocolate Dosa and filter coffee. Podi masala Dosa was bit spicy so don't order if you can't handle heat. I did not like their ginger chutney coz it was too sweet and overpowered ginger taste. Sambar was meh. Other chutneys were okay. Filter coffee was okay but could have avoided paper cups atleast for people dining in. Got jangiri which tasted like jilebi. Highly disappointed. I read other reviews saying they are highly inconsistent in their quality..maybe I went on a bad day! Service was good and fast. Our order arrived within 10minutes.
Quite disappointing to see luke warm food served across the board. Seems like Dosa or a few appetizers or utappam are freshly made to order but other stuff - Idli, Vada or Upma came pretty much with no temperature on them. Guessing they were bulk prepared and waiting to be sent out. Sambar was room temperature as well. Place was certainly crowded with limited parking. Service was extremely quick as there was long waits and they wanted tables turning quickly but not going to return unfortunately with the not so great food experience.
I had lot of expectations on this restaurant, but it disappointed me. We tried ghee podi which was very bland, vada which was freshly made but lacks the flavor and rava masala dosa for which they kept masala under the dosa not in between and that was just fine too not great. Chutneys were also just average except tomato which is good. Not sure if it was a weekend thing which influenced the taste. But service was service was really fast.
Used to frequent this spot, decided to visit again after a long time. Poori w/masala - large pooris, but a lot more oily since it’s thicker than the average Poori. Masala delicious otherwise. Mini idli w/sambar - chutneys were great, sambar very mediocre. Not what it used to be. Curious to see what caused the shift, but they’d definitely have some tough competition with new and growing restaurants expanding all over the South Bay.
Tried South Indian for the first time today here!\n\nGot two of their most popular items: podi idly and the masala dosa. The idly was ok, and the dosa was pretty good.\n\nBut maybe I need some more…
My most recent visit was very disappointing. While the dosa was good , all the chutneys were cold like it was just taken out of a refrigerator. I was a regular but won’t be returning anymore
The person who cleans the table and the wraps the garbage, will serve the food and extra chutney to you without washing their hands. This is unacceptable. They really need the waiters to serve the food not the cleaners. Hope the management looks into this.
Rudest staff. The lady at the counter asked me to sit anywhere I want. Came back few minutes later, and asks me to move to the last table in the almost empty restaurant as I had my carryon bag with me. I refused to move as I already settled down, and offered to leave the restaurant. She leaves with saying “.. you need to think before doing anything”.
WORST MANAGEMENT, and service is horrible and coming to food. As there were no other better options for south Indian dishes. Otherwise with the oil in the food I don't need to buy oil for my cooking for the rest of the month Please DOUBLE check your order that they are too careless to put everything from your order in the bag for Takeouts.
The staff were very rude. The dosa was not crispy at all and was served cold. It felt like they gave a previously cooked dosa instead of making it fresh. Very disappointing experience.
I visited this place today, and although we were the last customers, they let us in and took our order. What happened next was honestly unbelievable. About 15 minutes after we got our food, one waiter decided he was done working for the night -- and instead of handling it professionally, he basically tried to kick us out while we were still eating. He didn't just ask once. He came over 4-5 times within 8-9 minutes, repeating "finish your food, finish your food" like a broken record. And the worst part? He didn't just interrupt us -- he stood right at our table, hovering over us and waiting, making the atmosphere so tense and uncomfortable that we couldn't even take a proper bite. It felt like we were being watched, rushed, and pushed out the door even though we were paying customers who were told we could dine in. The whole interaction was unbelievably rude, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable for any restaurant. It ruined the entire meal and left us feeling unwelcome and pressured from the second he started his countdown routine. This was hands down one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had, and I absolutely will not be coming back. No customer should ever be treated with this level of impatience and disrespect.
We visited for breakfast on Sunday. The food was okay, but the service was terrible. Plates were practically thrown at us, our order was not taken properly, and staff ignored us when we tried to get their attention. They wouldn’t bring the check and treated us very poorly overall. Not worth the hype. I do not recommend this place and would not encourage this kind of service.
Found the nozzle of a spray bottle in the dosa. No idea what bottle the cap came from, can only hope it's not from something poisonous like a bug spray. Please be careful when ordering from here. Ordered online take out order - this review is for ulavacharu tiffins. Tried to email but get an error that email address can't be found.
I visited this restaurant recently and the experience was completely unacceptable. The girl working over there she was extremely rude, unhelpful, and showed no respect toward customers. She didn't serve my food properly and behaved in a very unprofessional manner. It's disappointing to see such poor customer service at a well-known restaurant.even she was asking to pay bill in cash so she will give me a discount. I strongly advise everyone to avoid this location until management takes serious action to replace or properly train the staff. Customers deserve better treatment and respect.
I had a terrible experience at Ulavacharu Tiffins Sunnyvale. I ordered the Podi Idly, and to my shock, I found a metal nut (like from a machine or kitchen equipment) inside the food — clearly visible on the plate (see photo). This is not just unacceptable, it’s a serious health hazard. What’s even more concerning is that idly is often served to kids because it’s soft and easy to digest. Imagine if a child had bitten or swallowed this — it could’ve caused serious injury or worse. I reported it immediately, but the staff and manager were extremely rude and dismissive. They acted like it wasn’t a big deal, which made the situation even worse. Food safety is non-negotiable. If something like this can make it onto a customer’s plate, it raises serious questions about hygiene and kitchen practices. ⚠️ To those who eat here regularly: Please be very careful. Accidents like this should never happen in a food establishment. I will definitely not be returning.
