My daughter and I ate there Sat. Ordered pea soup and hot tea. . The service was good, only first brought the tea bags hot water and lemon slices , and last the cup.. everything was good and they were good in making sure we had what we needed.
One of the last few historical stops remaining on the 5 freeway. Meatloaf is good, pea soup is always good and bread pudding in delicious! Glad this place is still open, it hasn’t changed much since my family started passing through here in the 70’s, start the tradition for your family too!!!
I do like coming to this place for breakfast. Also, to grab a snack from the Danish Bakery for the road. Places like these are closing down. The food is good and it's always a pleasure to stop here. I think the food is a little pricey. I base this on the amount of food that I ordered for myself. I like to taste everything, and well, that comes at a cost. This morning, I ordered the Belgian waffle and an omelet, and it was around $30 for all of this.
Such a great place! Clean bathrooms to wash hands before you eat. Tables are nice and decor is cool. Food is absolutely amazing. We had pot roats dinner, potato skins appetizer and split pea soup appetizer. Everything was possibly the best I have ever had!!! Huge menu also. Wow! Its so great!!!
Got cup of split pea soup for drove home to Danville from SoCal. Been stopping here 50 years goin Disneyland with my mom dad then my kids. Had home cooked dinner on our way down last week. Gift shop & penny smash machine still there
Pea soup Anderson’s is one of my go to stops on my way to and from Southern California. This past trip we drove out of our way coming back from Pebble Beach to eat here. Obviously there’s soup is my favorite reason to stop there. They have a unlimited bowl option which I always get. They have great bread options as well. I usually add a side salad which is a good portion size. My wife got the tuna salad and she loved it. It had plenty of tuna and veggies. Next time she would get it without the pickles. My son loves their grilled cheese and milkshakes.
Old school diner with split pea soup that you need to drive to and eat at NOW. It’s got all the nostalgic and cozy vibes you are looking for. The food is fantastic for that home cooked flavor. The staff are kind and courteous—a rarity in this day. The decor is inviting and the unique signage will have you longing for yesteryear. I ordered cottage cheese and it was amazing—they turned into an art piece. ( see photos)
Nostalgia at its finest for my wife. She talked about stopping here for 800 miles. Anderson's didn't disappoint. Barb has a 30-year love of the Split Pea soup. This was one of the must stop places on our visit to northern CA. You gotta love the historic architecture of the place too. As for me, the fresh baked pie was spectacular. Certainly worth a visit for soup lovers.
I had a pleasant breakfast experience at this great place. The pancakes where delicious and good tasting coffee. The other items on my breakfast plate were good as well. It was my first time trying the pea soup and it was very fulfilling and good tasting. It was maybe too much of it to go along with my breakfast plate ☺️. Excellent customer service, the lady’s tending the place had the greatest attitude towards their customers. Also, the place was clean and in good order. Beautiful building from the outside and the inside. 👍
My go to for comfort food! Namely split-pea soup and a loaded bake potato. The food is always good and the service is excellent. Yes, the place is a bit aged and could probably use an update, but keeping doing the great food and service!
A old beautiful danish style restaurant. I seeing this place on different TV shows and a documentary. I been wanting to try for a while. Me being a huge fan of peas this place was on my bucket list for years. First time trying their famous Pea soup. The food is delicious! The portions are very fulfilling. So many options but of course their Pea soup is a must. The staff is super friendly. We got lucky to have a great conversation about the process of the Pea soup making by our waitress. Family friendly environment with few cute backgrounds to snap a survenir photos. The windmill is huge and beautiful for photos. The place is huge and plenty of tables for a big groups or family gathering or birthday party. Old style but well kept and clean. The shop is small full of small handmade curiosities to take home as surveniers. The market place is full of delicious products to take home. The parking is right at front and handicap accessible. $$ Location is very accessible near to a mayor freeway. Restrooms are super clean, handicap accessible and the decor is danish style. Free wifi for customers I totally recommended this restaurant for a fun family experience.
I can't get enough of this place, I get excited every time I need ti drive north to south. I make it a must stop for the pea soup which I enjoy for the next few hours. Looking forward to the next time! Highly recommended 👌
Throwback type of atmosphere. The pea soup is delicious (salt to taste), and some of the other menu items are good too. The servers/cashiers are very nice.
I drive down here quite often for the fried chicken...it is fabulous. They don't make it until you order so its piping hot got mine with the parsley potatoes (which I love) and will continue to come back as long as they are open(please stay open)
Food was delicious, but staff was beyond wonderful. Me and my friends had a bit of a mis communication and ended up getting in about 20 mins before the closed and left about 5 minutes after they did. I felt awful for holding them back, but despite us slowing their night down they still served us great food and had smiles on their faces. Will definitely come back(at a decent time)
First time! Omg love the design of this place! 😍 so different & well kept! Super clean areas even their bathrooms! Unique gift shop items as well! Waitress KELLY you're the best ever! Thank you for entertaining my family & amazing customer service 👏 ❤️ 😍 I ordered the Danish meatloaf delicious! Soft & huge portions w/ gravy & veggies! I also tried their known dish called Pea Soup on a bread bowl! A must try everyone! Amazing unique taste w/ blended spices & side add ons like bacon bits, chopped ham, cheese, & many more! The bowl bread grilled to perfection amazing taste 😋 especially the buttery taste of it! Next time I'll try their desserts! Till next time! Stop by here if your on a kong drive & need a break again amazing place & attentive staffs!
This is a great stop for families. We have stopped here since the 1980's. The interior looks the same today. They have a fun gift shop for everyone in the family. Of course, the split pea soup is the signature dish! It's a great stop for breakfast, lunch, or dinner! Classic location on Interstate 5!
Love stopping here when travelling...great family tradition. The kids wanted the all-you-can-eat split pea soup, but we didn't do that for them...Mama got it though! 😋 Perhaps should've...but they enjoyed splitting one bowl of pea soup and ½ of a sandwich...that with the cheddar onion rolls and splitting a chocolate shake at the end was plenty! Hubs loves the Danish Sausage with the purple cabbage...such unique flavors! I can't order anything but the Traveler's Special...unlimited split pea soup! Ambiance is the same...cool vibe, decor, and unique menu. However... Service is sometimes stellar and sometimes just mehh... This last time we had to ask for drink refills and my soup refill. She did it quickly once asked, but had to ask each time. Now perhaps the crowd had something to do with it but it wasn't as crowded as we've seen other times... Also, the staff smiles were just nonexistent this last time! We tried chatting to help turn staff into smiling, but no one was interested in chatting even while we were waiting on them. As a manager of staff myself, perhaps management shifted something internally, or should address any concerns employees may seem to be building.
This restaurant is really neat. My husband has the Frikadeller and he said it was wonderful. Service was good. It wasn't very crowded on a Tuesday late afternoon. The cheese rolls were interesting. I didn't quite like them at first but we ended up asking for more! They have a gift shop with lots of goodies. They sell their pea soup. And they also sell the Greek seasoning they have on the table. Picked up a cheese danish and a fresh chocolate eclair on the way out too! They also have an event room on the second floor, a small pub beside the restaurant and a hotel next door. EDIT: we stopped in today and got the Swedish meatballs--absolutely delicious!!
I totally love this place!!! It's probably the best split pea soup in the entire world. And if you stay at the Best Western accross from their parking lot, you get 20% off your meal if you mention it to your server or by showing your room key. They also have a separate lounge area if you need some alcoholic beverages while you watch your favorite team play in a playoff... Enjoy and safe travels!!!
We always stop here for all the split pea soup and onionrolls you can eat and it includes a milk shake. The staff are very friendly, helpful and checing oyour needs frequently. Tge gift shop bakery are fabulous. Easy accessible parking. Quaint decor Danish style.
We love this place. It has been a family favorite my whole life. A few changes we aren't thrilled with, basically the same as everywhere else. If it help keep them from closing, the it's worth it. If not, I hope they go back. Basically it's just the higher prices and changes in products. We used to get the poppy bread and a cracker basket at the beginning from the restaurant, now you have to buy them. Also the price of the toppers for the soup vs. The size of the items. It's a teeny tiny little cup of ham etc.. but still a bit expensive for what you get. OTHER than that, we absolutely love this place. We have so many memories here. Our grandparents are at the veterans cemetery nearby. We went here with them while they were here, and still visit them now and eat here often. I'm so happy that the gift shop is back!
Well worth the stop off the highway. Food is excellent. Atmosphere is excellent. Service is excellent. Restaurant is clean and safe. If you are a foodie you must try the Pea Soup no matter the time of year. Restaurant in Solvang unfortunately has closed. Enjoy a meal here and shop in their store. Get some peach soup for the road. You won't be disappointed.
Was so impressed with this Danish place that serves delicious pea soup! Everything on the menu was just fine. Love the ambience, nostalgic and so relaxing. There were not so many people on this day and they weren’t so busy. The staffs are friendly and attentive, they always come and asked you if everything is alright. Neat and clean place. Their restrooms are so impressive with all the interior decorations. The gift shop sells mostly Danish stuffs and souvenir items and they’re so lovely! Would love coming back here for the food and ambience!
We went there on the 20th and had a California omelette and my daughter had a steak. It was absolutely amazing the service rocks they came back on Sunday 22nd chicken fried steak and California helmet everybody there is amazing and we love going there. We’ve been there probably eight or nine times now we come all the way from Vallejo to go to San Diego and we always stop in there. Thank you.
Great stop on our road trip with 2 humans and 2 small dogs but unfortunately we got there too early for the patio to be staffed. However the place was very busy, so I appreciated they could take our order and provide to-go as quickly as they did. I love split pea soup and this lived up to my expectations. It tasted SO GOOD. We also got the mushroom swiss chicken sandwich with fries. The sandwich was delicious and the fries were great too. I'm glad we could stop by here and take our order to go. Hopefully next time we can sit on the patio with our dogs.
It’s a Danish culture oriented restaurant, but it has classic American dishes as well. Food is good, portions are generous, service is great. Nice place to eat and rest, feeling like you’re out in vacations around Europe for few moments. Building is nice and it has a Dutch windmill nice for take pictures.
I've been going here for over 10 years and have never been disappointed in the food here. The pea soup in itself is very good and the saltine crackers are a must. The All-you-can-eat travelers special includes nearly unlimited soup and a choice of drink. (Lemonade is my go to here). They used to have really good bread but changed the recipe over a year ago. The new bread is still good though, and the water could use some more love as it doesn't really taste as good.
Lovely soup with unlimited refills. You can't go wrong. Other stuff looked good but I will have to try next time. Staff was friendly and the gift shop was well stocked.
Andersons has been a tradition for my family when we road trip. The high rating is not purely for nostalgia, the food has always been great especially the split pea soup- yes, for first timers it might look like baby food… but I assure you, some crackers and tobacco and you have a solid meal. These places are the spirit of old America and make roadtrips fun.
So glad this place is still here. It’s been a minute I’ve been here but I’m coming more now. Only major complaint was I had to season my steak when I got it. Maybe that’s why they have the garlic powder stuff at the table. Pea soup is still top notch!!! Went odd hours so wasn’t busy at all. Their store is still stocked and I love the religious section up front. Sure many may be meh, but for a traveler sometimes just little things like these can bring comfort! Candy and sweet selection is also huge. They have sugar free dark chocolate!!
Been wanting to come here for years to try the pea soup. It did not disappoint. Had the soup and chicken salad sandwich combo. Hubby had the Andersen burger. Fóod was very fresh and made from high quality ingredients. We were tempted to get dessert - lots of yummy choices in the case - but we still had another 5 hour drive home and didn't want to succumb to food coma. Next time, and this gives us an excuse to return.
You can't go wrong with a fresh bowl of pea soup! Never fails. Always delicious.
This is a great place to stop while traveling. The bathrooms are always clean, the gift shop has lots of cute things, and the bakery items look awesome! I didn't eat anything, but the restaurant looked busy. Most of the other places to eat here are fast food, so if you're looking for somewhere to sit down to eat this could be a great place. It's pretty easy to get in and out of the lot too.
The food here is delicious! I’m not sure about the total authenticity, but the flavors were spot on. I tried the Danish meatballs, split pea soup, and salad, while the kids loved their chili cheese fries and hamburger. also liked the cute snack area. I’ll definitely be back to enjoy a full meal.
Frozen in time, this old school restaurant is a great spot to stop when passing this way on Highway 5. Known for their pea soup, and rightly so because it’s so delicious, everything we’ve tried on the menu has been a winner. Service was friendly and attentive, prices are reasonable and an atmosphere that makes dining here an experience.
Worth going here & trying out the meals. -As someone who never had split pea soup before the food was delicious & served pretty quick. --The fixings doesn't come with & the add on charge was pretty expensive -The service was fast, but as a first timer we didn't realize we had to go up front to pay and the server didn't let us know this. Otherwise excellent service
Rolling down I-5? Don’t miss mile 407 — right across from the TA truck stop there’s Pea Soup Andersen’s. Good eats, fair prices, and old-school cozy vibes. Plenty of parking, fast service, and food that actually hits the spot. One of those rare places that makes the road feel a little more like home. Highly recommend this pit stop!
Always a nostalgic stop for our family! Three generations of our family have enjoyed their wonderful pea soup over the years, making this a cherished tradition every time we pass through. I was truly saddened to learn this is now the only location left — it feels like a piece of family history is slipping away. For a family that doesn’t even eat peas, the Traveler’s Special is still a must! There’s just something special about that warm, all-you-can-eat bowl of split pea soup, paired with their soft, freshly baked rolls and a refreshing drink — it’s simple, hearty comfort food that never disappoints. And if you happen to stop by during breakfast, don’t worry — they even serve soup in the morning! Before you leave, be sure to browse their charming gift shop filled with nostalgic knickknacks and souvenirs to take a little piece of the experience home.
I've always wanted to dine here!! Omg what a lovely dinner. I ordered the meatloaf meal and it was amazing along with their famous split pea soup. The gift shop was adorable! Their lady restroom was huge and lovely. This place is definitely a date night place. The staff was so kind and helpful.
Not only do you get eat good food you can go Christmas shopping . This place was so cute and comfortable . Need mead ? Get it . Want souvenirs? Get it. Need Lea soup cans ? Go for it . Want hot sauce or Jams ? You got it ! Got a headache ? They can sell you Tylenol ! Get some baked goods on your way out .
I’ve been stopping at Anderson’s Pea Soup on road trips between Northern and Southern California & back since I was a kid in the 70s, and honestly, not much has changed… including (probably) the carpet 😄. But who cares? The food is still that good! Even my husband, who’s not a pea soup fan, took one bite and said, “Wow, this really is amazing soup!” And he was right. The salad is crisp, the onion rolls are warm and delicious, and the staff is always friendly. It’s classic, comforting, and consistently great in a fun kitschy environment…a must-stop tradition for anyone passing through!
We stop here every few years while driving thru to visit up north (we're from Southern California). When we go, my husband feels nostalgia from his childhood, and now so do our kids! We enjoy the split pea soup with the seasoning. And the bread rolls are also delicious. We went in and ate last night, and our waiter was wonderful - you can tell he has been doing this for a while and knows what he's doing. You can buy the canned soup. To be honest, it's not as good as the fresh soup, but it gets you through until you can make it back. I hope everyone enjoys this quaint business and keeps them going. Try it at least once, you won't regret it.
We had lunch here and at the other location multiple times whenever we traveled to Sequoias or South CA. The restaurant and the store are great and always maintain consistency in quality and quantity. The food, especially splitpea soup and sandwiches (especially vegetarian eggplant one) have always been yummy and abundant. The service is very friendly during breakfast or lunch time though restaurants would be busy. Their chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream is so heavenly! I wish they include vegetarian sandwich in soup and sandwich combo. That’s my only issue as am the only vegetarian in the group and I have to make two orders. I box the leftovers for my dinner though. Love their bakery items and pastries to go.
After years of reading the sign and wondering if this place existed, I was finally able to make it! It is a beautiful place, it has a gift shop, a bar, a cheese section, a bakery, and also you can buy canned pea soup. Great service, the food is good it is just not my type of food. Restrooms were clean too.
The bakery program is SOLID and makes the stop worthwhile. There's a light, airy sandwich cookie with raspberry jam and whip cream that is perfect! It's not too sweet and has a great texture. The chocolate chip cookie and peanut butter cookie were solid. Both had butter, were soft, and chewy. All the pastries were surprisingly good for a tourist stop. The split pea soup is worth getting once. We dined in and shared a soup bowl. It was seasoned, thick, and hot. It is by far the best pea soup, but not my favorite soup. Still, I would bring the uninitiated to try it. The bathrooms were clean and in order. Although the whole place could use a refresh, the bakery goods, the soup, and clean bathrooms makes this place worth visiting. Tesla supercharging is NOT FREE as claimed by other reviewers. It's listed as the Gustine Supercharger. It's located in at the back of the parking lot, behind the restaurant. It could use more lighting after sunset. The parking lot is a bit dark but generally safe.
I had the Ruben sandwich with frys. And salad with blue cheese dressing and a bowl of pea soup. For dessert a cheese cake with cherry wine sauce. The corned beef on the ruben was very tender and flavorful. The ketchup on the side of my plate was added by me. This was my first visit, but my family said this place has not changed in 50 years. And still never had a bad meal. The only downside were the prices were a little on the high side.
This fancy soup is fine but it's just a pea soup. You can cook the same at home with very little effort. Other meals are fresh and cooked well. However, think of it as a simple farm food with very mild flavor. If you are used to Asian, Mediterranean or oriental type, you can find it very bland and tasteless. Service is great and the place is really nice though.
Was traveling with my Kiddo looking for a late night dinner. The pea soup is great. The service was awesome and welcoming. The atmosphere was very cool and the building has the old longhouse vibe. The rest of the food was just OK the reason it is very underseazoned. I had chicken fried steak and eggs since I am a sucker for all day breakfast...I needed a loft of the "house seasoning" which was in abundance at the table otherwise everything was very bland. My daughter had the home fried chicken. The chicken was well fried, crunchy and fresh but again no seasoning. Bottom line if im passing by and nowhere else to go I will stop again and stick with the soup.
Update: Had a bad experience this time.. chicken was burned, meatball was sour and our bakery items were dry and tasted like they had been sitting there for months. Why are things hit or miss..... our first experience was awesome. This time not so much. Thing to get here is definitely the split pea soup. It's good every time it seems. If the meatballs are supposed to be sour then I guess its good. All I know is we won't be eating them again. Lol. The food was so delicious. Our first time here and we really enjoyed it. The split pea soup is definitely a must try. My only complaint if I had one would be that they dont include things like French fries, soup and salad in the entrees or for just a small upcharge or something. Some stuff in kind of expensive. But thats food costs these days I guess. All in all it was a nice experience.
You can easily spot this place from the freeway if you know it's coming up. The place has a classic medieval feel. The food here is delicious. You can't go wrong with the classic split pea soup. I opted to get all the optional sides (bacon bits, ham, green onions, cheddar cheese and croutons) and added them to the soup. The bread is fresh and pairs nicely with the soup. The service left a bit to be desired but the dining area was busy at the time so I only took off one star. Overall, a great place to stop for a meal.
Others have captured the essence of this place. Part nostalgia, part tourist trap, part convenience, part curiosity about the windmill, and the burning question about how good could pea soup possibly be where they build all their marketing off of it? Turns out quite good! Enough where the family stopped here on the way to SoCal and on the way back to Sacto. It is pricey just for pea soup but the travelers breakfast deal or the soup and sandwich combo are more reasonable ways to get a taste. It’s surprisingly tasty but you’ll want the crackers, bread, or some seasonings if you get the bowl as there is a lot. The rest of the food isn’t bad but nothing special. Staff is very friendly and service is quick. The decor is pretty unique. Heard their other location is closing down so stop by and keep this place running. Definitely worth a quick stop and a bite to eat.
Pretty cool spot to stop at and refill with some food. The pea soup is delicious. I did like the salad dressing, but the salad was served large pieces and no knife to cut into bite-sized bites. Service was friendly and fast. The building is huge! There are lots of knick knacks to look at. Overall - great stop off location
Thought this place had closed. Have always liked stopping here even though I'm not big on split pea soup. Gf got the soup and loved it. I got the meatloaf sandwich and it was just okay. Nice place to visit. It was slow when we got there but started to pickup before we left. Glad to see they are still in business. Neat nicnacs and souvenirs.
We stopped here in the morning on a road trip to Los Angeles. We waited for it to open at 8:00AM. The pea soup did NOT disappoint? It was delicious. Highly recommend the Danish sausage as well. This is a tourist trap that must be sprung. Can a place have too much atmosphere? We hope to return for the Hap-pea Hour!
Don't get me wrong the soup was good but my mom has been making it for over 94 years and hers smokes this. She goes with veggies and ham bone so it's not fair. This was good and most people will swear by it if they don't have a comparison. The hamburger my son had was very nice. Price was a little high for soup. This place also has a store where you can purchase the soup in cans or the raw ingredients that come with the recipe. Very kid friendly. Lots of places to eat when we went and placemats the kids can draw on.
I've been stopping here in trips through California since I was a kid in the 80s. It has changed very little. The food is good but a bit pricey for what you get. They always have clean restrooms. The little gift shop is adorable and the pastries in the case are delicious. It's a nice place to get out and stretch for a bit on a long drive and feels a bit like going back in time.
This place feels more like a classic roadside stop than a destination for great food. The restaurant is very large and clearly designed to serve a high volume of customers, so it works if you are looking for a place to quickly fill up during a road trip. However, the food itself was generally overcooked, and the waiting time for our dishes was longer than expected. The split pea soup with bread was interesting and unique. It is definitely something different and fun to try at least once, especially if you are curious about their signature dish. Overall, it is a convenient stop to get full, but I would not consider it a must-visit food destination or a “foodie” spot.
A time capsule of another time. Such a charming cute place. Their pea soup is quite nice. I crave it every few years and have to stop by. The staff is super friendly. The entire building feels like something from the past. You will never see new places look like this. Worth a stop just to cime check out the shop and look around. The food isnt spectacular but good comfort food. Nice fries.
I-5 in Central Valley is a traveler’s desert, punctuated only with unmemorable truck stops, gas station and chain restaurant clusters every so often. And for those familiar, on one of the exits, Andersen’s Pea Soup Restaurant is a welcomed break from the mundane, a glimpse of Denmark. It’s iconic in its own right, this spot having been here since 1976. (𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙃𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙬𝙖𝙮 101 𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 1924 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙞𝙣 2024, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙥𝙞𝙨𝙤𝙙𝙚.) Pea soup courses in their DNA, but there’s a lot more served, along with trinkets and tchotchkes, with clean bathrooms for customers. It's a nostalgic throwback to the mid-20th century era, times when cross-country travel was when you were king-of-the-road to discover America.
So I have done Dinner and Breakfast here on many occasions... The portions are hefty so if you leave hungry it's your fault. Positives. Service is very on top of it when and efficient once you have ordered. No waiting for refills and frequent quiet checks to be sure your good The Split Pea Soup pretty consistency and creamy thick. The Pot Roast dinner is beautiful and very filling. I did the Andersen's Traveler Breakfast and again filling, especially since you get All you can eat pancakes... I enjoyed those a bit too much I think.... The Bread Pudding is tasty and hot The Negatives Every visit I have had it seems like the kitchen is allergic to seasoning... Every visit I have had it takes forever to get initial service... Seated fast but you will wait, even when they are not busy, to even get you drink order taken. The Bread Pudding has no warning of nuts in the recipe and the "Brandy" sauce tastes like sugared cream or milk and poured over cold. I dumped an entire soup cup of sauce out of mine. Brandy is the key flavor element to brandy sauce and the waitress confirmed they use very little.. sad.... The Split Pea Soup is bland The mash potatoes taste like they smashed a potatoes and plopped it on the plate. Veg is similar, maybe some oil or butter but no seasoning. The gravy, which should be full of flavor, was plain as was the roast under it .. Eggs and ham were both plain bland. Once you add salt and pepper everything is delicious though. It's just sad that the guest has to season it their self. I stay at the hotel next door on business so I come here and will continue to but the kitchen really needs to learn what seasoning is...
I went here to grab some Danish pancakes, but they don't have any. I guess I have to go to Solvang to get them. This place is huge, though. They offer restrooms for their guest and have a large souvenir shop. I didn't rate the food since I did not try them. I would have tried the pea soup, but the lines are long, maybe next time.
Not wowed by this place. Awesome building, food was kinda of a let down. I could see families really enjoying this place but if you don’t have kids I’d skip it. This place is famous for being famous at this point. Service was lame - the waitress flat told one of our people “no” when ordering a salad but didn’t explain what the options were. Maybe they were tired but it wasn’t a great start to our experience there. My steak was good, but not amazing. I didn’t get split pea soup but everyone who did thought it was just ok.
A unique experience, especially if you're traveling. Pros: the California Chicken Sandwich was outstanding and huge! Lots of avocado. The Cherry Wine was good. Bought a bottle for later. The service was very friendly and good. The inside is well kept and clean with a souvenir shop and bakery. Cons: the outside looks dilapidated and needs some repair. The fries were undercooked and tiny. Nothing more than an inch long. Prices are very high. A lunch burger or sandwich with a side is nearly $20. A soft drink is or iced tea is $4.50! Overall, if the prices were more reasonable, I'd be back. For the price, I'd expect better.
If you happen to be in the area, this is a is must stop roadside attraction at least once in your lifetime. It's located in Santa Nella right off Interstate5. The building is designed in a traditional Danish style architecture with a functioning windmill that stands roughly 77 feet tall. Back in 1976, when they first opened, it was the first of its kind. Currently, there is a restaurant, bakery, bar, and gift shop. Their signature dish is the namesake -split pea soup. It's vegetarian. They even have an AYCE split pea soup offer for about $17 that comes with bread rolls and choice of drink that includes a milkshake option. There is even a breakfast AYCE option of pancakes. The restaurant menu offers breakfast and lunch/dinner entrees. The bakery is a hit or miss. The past times I've dropped in over the years, most of my selections were hard and stale. The cookies are more on the hard crisp than soft moist. The best bet for consistency are the Danish pastries. The gift shop is fun. It has loads of kitschy gift items, snacks, and branded merchandise. They sell bags of the split pea soup contents with the recipe & cooking instructions. If actual cooking ain't your thing, pick up a can of the classic soup. The bathrooms were built to accommodate a large amount of travelers. They encourage folks to come on in to use the restrooms with no pressure to be a customer.
I think this is totally overrated and the pea soup was not a “must-try” in my opinion. We had the steak and the all you can eat pea soup (the AYCE is per person, not for everyone). I think the steak was just ok and soup was also just ok. The milkshake that came with the AYCE was very good though. For its being very famous for long standing, I think it’s very overpriced and the food was just ok.
The split Pea Soup was definitely delicious and I have never liked green peas. I also had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables. I like the texture and flavor of the vegetables. Unfortunately I wasn't too fond of the fried chicken because the outside was more like a candy shell, too hard. Maybe that's an old style way of frying chicken but not where I'm from.
Somewhat a tourist trap, but it`s worth to check it out once. I found the food to be just average. The pea soup is quite pricy and you have to add on the interesting things like ham, cheese, and croutons. Without extra ingredients the pea soup would be bland and boring. Spacious interior, though servers seemed somewhat overwhelmed.
Such a fun place to visit. In its "hey day", it was an exciting stop and I always looked forward to the cool gift shop. I am a sucker for gift shops and this one is still good! If you collect salt and pepper shakers, this place has some of the best ones I have seen. We ordered the split pea soup and got it to go. It had a good base, but I wanted to doctor it up to give it some more intense flavor. It was pretty flat. I ordered a couple of sweet treats and they were too bland for my taste. The entire place could use an update. The charm of yester-year is valuable and made me want to spend money to support them, but the over arching feel of aged wear and tear made it hard for me to. I love supporting places like these and want them to stay in business! With that said, not sure I would be motivated to stop again.
I’ve been going to Pea Soup Andersen’s for decades, mostly the Buellton location near Solvang, CA. I love the freshly made pea soup served with thinly sliced Danish Rye bread. But Pea Soup Andersen’s no longer has the Rye bread, just crackers, and prices have gone up. The unlimited pea soup meal (comes with a drink) was $18. A single bowl of pea soup was $9. So we ordered the single bowls. The restaurant is not as clean as it could be and service was slow. It appeared the restaurant was understaffed. We loved our soup but overall, our visit was disappointing. I understand that prices are up, but it was too much, and the soup was not as good without the Danish Rye. If you go, be sure to check out the gift shop. The restaurant still has a nice gift shop.
I have been driving up I 5 for 60 years. Never stop at the restaurant. I decided this the year! It's a historical place. A friend of ours that visited last month stopped there for the first time also he gave it no good reviews said the soup was so so and the environment was not that great I decided I will have my own opinion The minute we walked, I couldn't get out fast enough. Dirty! The bathroom, filthy. We got soup to go. I'm so sad that was my experience.
$50 for one veggie delight sandwich, a cup of pea soup, and half sandwich combo. The soup is vegetarian and was well-seasoned and comforting. Sandwiches were nothing special. Plenty of parking. Service was terrible. Waiter was not interested in providing us with water, utensils, or properly taking our orders. As we were paying, cashier didn’t care to address us and continued a side conversation. If you are going for the soup, I’d recommend using the bathroom and getting some soup to go. The restaurant itself is lacking customer service. It’s fine for a quick stop during a road trip.
disappointment in mangers responce We had a bad experience at this restaurant once before, but because it was a place I frequented as a child while traveling I decided to give it another try. This time we order three burgers, a sausage sandwich ,and an Alfredo dish. While dining I initially wrote my review and posted it all three burgers were burnt. Upon reviewing our receipt we noticed it said med-well listed for the burgers. Still I wished the server had asked how we wanted them cooked. I would have chosen medium. On a positive note the sausage sandwich was very good and the Alfredo was a hit -my son who ordered it loved it. After paying our bill In full, I politely asked to speak to the manger-not to complain or ask for anything free- but simply to suggest that the servers remember to ask customers how they'd like their burgers cooked. The manger asked me to wait, then she returned and said she was issuing us a refund. I explained we didn't need or want a refund. I just wanted to offer helpful feedback for future guest. What happened next shocked me. The waiter immediately approached us. Looking distressed, the manger scolding him right there in front of us and the other customers. He even pulled money from his own wallet to offer us a refund. I told him it wasn't necessary -we had paid in full- and I appreciate his apology. Even after he walked away the manger continued to tell us she went to the back and blamed him and had already yelled at him. As someone who has worked food industry, I know it's not only unprofessional but illegal to make a staff pay out of pocket for dissatisfied customers. I never intended for anyone to be punished. My goal was simply to help improve service. If the. Manger truly wanted to turn this into positive experience, a better gesture would have been offering us a discount or a reason to come back. Instead, Rosa mishandled the situation and created a more uncomfortable environment. For both us and her staff who all witnessed it. To be clear I rewrite my review because although the food was mixed some food some disappointing, but the way the staff, especially our waiter was treated was far worse than any issues with the meal. If I had know how this manger treated staff I would have simply left my original review and walked away. My hope is the owner of the beloved iconic place reviews the actions of the manger and speaks to the staff about their treatment and makes corrections needed to make this place great.
I can see why the Buellton location shut its doors. The food is outdated, bland and soulless. The pea soup was served cold in the bread bowl and bowl. We let the waitress know and she scrapped it out in her bar nook and filled it again from the pot sitting out in the dining room. The bread bowl was soggy from her scrapping it. Bread tastes like it went rancid and soup had zero flavor, just a bright green goo looking thing. Best item was the salteen crackers. We are California natives and always saw the famous pea soup signs, so we finally made time to stop there. Trust us if it’s on your bullet list just to try and you have to go, just get a small cup between 2 people and you’ll see exactly why it’s worth nothing. Also for leftover soups the waitress gave us two to go coffee cups…… bad service, bad food, and bad hygiene, place needs to close its door, Andersen’s belongs in the past as a memory
I recently splurged on what has to be the priciest chocolate I’ve ever bought—$13 for just two small pieces. I chose to buy from this local small business instead of going with a big, known brand because I wanted to show support. I tried the milk chocolate with hazelnut first, and honestly, it tasted like pure butter and sugar in the worst way. I couldn’t even finish the small piece. Sadly, it was definitely not worth the splurge.
