Dining at El Dorado Kitchen on Sonoma Plaza feels like a delicious stroll through history - literally. The building itself dates back to around the 1840s, originally built by Salvador Vallejo, brother of Sonoma Valley founder General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, as part of the early pueblo’s core structures. It has worn many hats over nearly two centuries - from a residence and winery to various community uses - and today it stands proudly as a vibrant culinary destination in the largest historic plaza in California. Led by Executive Chef Armando Navarro, the food here is a joyful celebration of California cuisine with a Sonoma sensibility. On my visit, the short ribs were rich and tender, melting into a deep, savory hug with every bite. Melting in my mouth it gave such a rich and delightful feeling of loving family dinner. The mushroom tart was earthy and elegant, crisp enough to make you pause and smile. And don’t even get me started on the chocolate lava cake - molten, indulgent, and utterly irresistible. What I really love about El Dorado Kitchen is that it feels connected - to the history around it, to the seasons in Sonoma County, and to guests who wander in seeking a meal that’s both delicious and meaningful. Seating on the patio lets you watch life unfold on the plaza while savoring thoughtfully prepared dishes, local ingredients, and a menu that makes you want to stay just a little longer. If a dinner could make you grin with pure satisfaction and say, “That was awesome,” El Dorado Kitchen will absolutely deliver. You will crave to get back again and again
El Dorado Kitchen was the absolute highlight of my wine tasting tour! We stopped in for lunch to take a breather between tastings, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. From the moment we sat down, the customer service was top-tier—attentive, friendly, and perfectly paced. Since it was my birthday, they surprised me with a delicious complimentary dessert, which was such a thoughtful and classy touch. The Highlights: • The Salmon: Perfectly cooked and incredibly fresh. Easily one of the best meals I've had in Sonoma. • Espresso Martini: My drink of choice for the day, and they nailed it. It was balanced, bold, and exactly the "pick-me-up" I needed. • The Bread: Even the simple things were standout; the bread was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is beautiful, the food is stellar, and the staff truly knows how to make a guest feel special. If you're looking for a refined yet welcoming spot to refuel while exploring wine country, this is it!
Our dinner for a group of 8 was amazing. The cocktails were wonderful. We shared the oysters, paella, risotto, carbonara, braised short ribs, and brussel sprouts. Everything was absolutely amazing.
El Dorado Kitchen delivered outstanding service—our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful, which really elevated the experience. While the food didn’t quite live up to the hype for us, it was still enjoyable overall. The paella was unfortunately overcooked, with rice that had burned to the pan, and a few of the other dishes felt a bit underwhelming compared to expectations. That said, the atmosphere and exceptional service made the visit pleasant, and it’s easy to see why this spot is so popular with many diners.
Absolutely outstanding from start to finish. Everything was great — the food, the service, and the atmosphere. What truly impressed me was how even the simplest dishes were elevated to something memorable. The beet salad, which sounds very simple on the menu, was incredibly fresh, perfectly balanced, and full of flavor. The squash soup was just incredible — rich, comforting, and beautifully executed. The service was attentive and warm without being intrusive, and the ambiance made the entire experience feel relaxed yet special. Highly recommend — we will definitely be back.
Absolutely loved El Dorado Kitchen. Our server at Buena Vista Winery recommended this gem of a restaurant. So glad he did. When you enter, it’s part of the El Dorado Hotel and you feel that rustic 1843 old west vibe because that’s when the hotel was built! Once you go into the restaurant, it’s modern, yet classy. The host was very welcoming and sat our party immediately. We ordered the beet salad: fresh, vibrant, perfect ying and yang of flavors with the fresh goat cheese, candied pistachios, citrus, jicama, cilantro, jalapeño yogurt, lemon vinaigrette. I got mine with prawns and it was delectable! We also ordered the tostada, that thing is HUGE! Packed with great flavor as well with chipotle braised chicken, black bean purée, cotija cheese, avocado, iceberg, cilantro, pico de gallo, spicy crema. Loved it! The lobster sandwich had a nice amount of buttery lobster with some crispy fries that were perfectly salted. Really loved this place. Lily, our server, was great as well. Can’t wait to go back.
Chef Navarro had an amazing Thanksgiving menu. The wagu beef carpaccio was amazing and the Turkey meal was awesome. Such tasty gravy. And we loved the pumpkin pie. Really delightfully surprised. Lily our server was so nice and thoughtful as well as all the servers and bussers. Very attentive, making sure our glasses were never empty and plates were taken at the right times.
My wife booked this and my only question was, what is Californian restaurant mean? Well the answer to that question was answered by the food, it doesn’t matter. We were seated promptly and even greated with a nice little card to start off as it was our anniversary. We started off with some prosecco and got starters you have to get the burrata with that huckleberry marmalade and hit of garlic cloves. Still dreaming about it. We had that with their mixed green salad that was set off by the wonderful hit of goat cheese. For main course my wife had what had to be the best scallops we ever cream sauce. I went in on the paella that came with shrimp, calamari, mussels and chorizo and the rice that was all perfectly seasoned and portioned. To top it all we finished off with a crème brûlée and the entire course with a fabulous County Lin Pinot noir. Man all the food came out on time in order and to please. The staff just as equally great and pleasant as the food. Mario was our waiter and the star of the night, even pairing perfectly our desert to the wine we were drinking.
Had lunch here recently and had a great experience! All the dishes were wonderful. Ordered a toasted squash with tofu and lentil dish that was fantastic!!(peppers on the side please). Had a salad, that I split with my partner and they kindly divided it up between us. Also had the shrimp tacos that were also really good. The drinks from the bar were very good too. They have some nice patio dining but we didn’t have reservations so sat inside. I will definitely be back. It also has a nice interior.
Great spot for lunch! A little indulgence and a lot of great food. We started with an item not even on the menu - some fried paella balls. We overheard a local order them and had the great fortune to also get a couple. Secret menu!! Oyster starter was great. Perfect salinity. Tender with all of the right accompaniments. The shrimp ravioli were brilliant. Large, plump shrimp in a decadent sauce. Short rib was fall apart perfect. The salsa verde was a bright surprise that added an additional level to the dish. Service matches the food. Spot on. 100% would go back.
This place was recommended to me, and now I highly recommend it as well! The mushroom salad was good with the earthy taste of the mushrooms shining through. The standout dish was undoubtedly the seafood paella – hands down the best I've had outside of Spain! The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the rice was infused with a rich, savory flavor that left me wanting more. Just had to dessert. The chocolate tart was delicious – decadent, rich, and perfectly balanced with some pecan nuts, and caramelized citrus fruit on top. Not too sweet, just pure chocolate bliss! The service was top-notch, attentive, and knowledgeable. Our server made excellent recommendations
We had the best experience there at El Dorado kitchen! Service was excellent and the food was delicious. I was there celebrating a good friend’s recent engagement. The restaurant saved us a private lunch area and created a mini menu. I had the chicken and my boyfriend had the short ribs, so good! Definitely recommend to anyone looking ti make a group reservation!
Food is good. Service is great. I'd come more often but I live an hour an 45 away. I recommend this place highly because of the service. Employees here are great, customers not so much. But if you can enjoy your stay without paying an attention to them, you'll enjoy it.
Came here for my birthday dinner and immediately loved the decor, ambience, and overall vibe. We were greeted warmly by both the host and our waiters, and they even had a cute happy birthday sign waiting for us, which was a really thoughtful touch. That said, I was a little disappointed there wasn’t a complimentary dessert, which would have been such a nice way to end a birthday dinner. I ordered the Shanghai Sour cocktail with five spice seasoning and it was good for what it was, interesting and different, though not something I’d rush to order again. The real highlight of the night was the appetizer. We ordered the hamachi crudo and it was beautifully prepared, well seasoned, and visually stunning. I just wish they gave more than four slices because it was honestly delicious. For entrées, we ordered the highly recommended seafood paella, which definitely lived up to the hype, and the lobster risotto. The risotto was good overall, but a bit watery for my liking. Overall, it was a lovely birthday dinner with great atmosphere, friendly service, and good food.
Food was excellent. I can recommend the corn risotto (needed to add salt and pepper for a boost) and spinach ravioli. The vegan plate was also good. The seared scallops had been billed as the stand out dish and was somewhat disappointing as it didn’t compare to scallops on cape cod.
I was there with a group of 5 on Sunday afternoon. Chicken Sandwich was burned. The service was unprofessional. The waitress was reading a book and texting and not paying attention to the 3 tables she had. I had to asked the host to tell her we need to order. She was busy hiding behind the counter instead of tending to the 2-3 tables. Not paying attention to the used plates sitting on the table. I have been in many fine dining restaurants and your waitress needs more professional training. I would not want to come back if this is the best wait staff you have. Local & Visitors.
Super loud! We sat in the room facing the Plaza, and it was deafening. My husband and I couldn't hear each other, and that was a bummer for what was supposed to be a romantic evening. It's an absolutely beautiful space, and our waiter, Ramon, was kind and personable. Our busser woman was very efficient and took great care of us, as well. The hostess was lovely, too. Cocktails were great, if pricey. Well balanced and innovative flavor combinations. The food was fine, but not quite hitting its marks, sorry to say. We wanted to love this place!
We dined at El Dorado Kitchen while recently staying at El Dorado Hotel, and unfortunately the experience was far more frustrating than it ever needed to be. Before dinner, we noticed a menu posted outside for El Dorado Cantina and preferred those options over the Kitchen menu. Since we already had reservations at El Dorado Kitchen that evening, we stopped to ask an employee if we could keep our reserved table, but order from the Cantina menu instead. We were clearly told yes and that it that would not be a problem. We were seated at our reserved table, ordered two drinks, received them, and then informed our waiter we would be ordering from the Cantina menu. At that point, we were told we actually could not. Given that we had already confirmed this with another staff member and had already been served drinks, the sudden change felt disorganized and frustrating, so I asked to speak with a manager. The manager’s solution was to relocate us to the completely opposite side of the restaurant into a closed section away from all other guests. We were the only table seated there. While they still charged us for the drinks and attempted to provide attentive service, being isolated in a shut down section felt awkward and honestly off putting. The energy and ambiance were clearly in the main dining room, and it felt strange to be moved out of sight after being told upfront that our request was fine. What made it even more frustrating was that other couples and groups in the main dining area were simply having drinks and not ordering food from the Kitchen, yet none of them were asked to relocate. We were not asking for anything unreasonable. We simply wanted to sit at the table we had reserved and order from the Cantina menu, as we were initially told we could. We had also planned to order additional drinks from the Kitchen, but after being moved, we decided against it. This situation could have been easily avoided with clearer communication from the start. As El Dorado hotel guests hoping for a seamless and enjoyable night out, the experience ultimately left us disappointed.
