tried the salmon and snow crab onigiri - both were great! a lot of filling which helps justify the price. would eat these regularly if i lived in the area
I ordered some Onigilly (a unique take on the popular Japanese onigiri) taste excellent and are a unique but similar to sushi. They are healthy and functional to eat. The employees were very friendly and helpful.
Onigiri that remind us of our favorite comfort food when we're in Japan--my toddler loved the krab salad and miso beef ones, and a lovely staff member offered him a yuzu lemon drink that he adored! The best place to grab a quick dinner after visiting Stanford campus.
By far one of the best poke I have ever tried!!!! The sauces are on point. The spicy Mayo 💜 The 2 scoops is very sufficient and filling. Staff is very helpful too. Great experience and totally recommend it.
Great Onigiri. We like to get the bento boxes and then take them for a picnic. I like the karaage side the best. The best onigiri in my opinion are the ume and spicy shrimp. My toddler enjoys having bites of everything. Onigilly is on the expensive side but I don’t know that many other places nearby to get onigiri.
Really great takeout, quick, tasty, and pretty healthy. Just needs some avocado 😁
I love the food here! Simple, healthy and yummy. When you just wanna grab a quick bite, it will be the best choice !
It was super easy to order and I didn’t even wait 5 minutes for my order.
We love the family meal and get that every few weeks. Usually we get Onigilly takeaway but I’ve also eaten there a few times. It’s delicious, healthy, and a great value. I also recommend the Zosui soup, which is warm and filling.
I love Onigilly! It is one of the most comforting foods I can imagine. The salmon and the eel onigiri are so rich and tasty and the rice cooked so well. It’s the perfect protein + carb, filling meal. I have only ever had carryout so I can’t speak to ambiance or service, but I have never had an order be late or incorrect.
I am quite impressed! I ordered two bento sets and they were ready in 5 minutes. The flavors are quite good, especially the ginger beef and teriyaki tofu. The salmon was plain. The edamame was good and I appreciated the bit of marinated tamago, pickled radish, and delicious (if lukewarm) karage chicken. This was a great value and I'll definitely come again! On my second visit, the karaage curry rice was short on chicken for the $15 price. The tofu noodle soup tasted amazing, as did the matcha cheesecake.
Super unique fast casual pick up restaurant. That rice triangles are great. They have a ton of different options and are relatively cheap. It’s a great snack! We did not love the rice, pumpkin curry. Curry was a little bit sweet for a liking, but it wasn’t bad. Always seems like there’s new things to try here and they’re popping up all over the place give it a shot!
My favorite lunch spot in downtown PA. Super reasonable prices and tons of great options on the menu. I have tried almost every onigiri flavor and could not possibly choose a favorite. Highly recommend!!!
We really like the miso beef onigilly. It came with a little bit of edamame and pickled daikon. Perfect snack for two. They have a self serve checkout which was slightly confusing. Minimal interaction with staff but they were helpful when needed. The restaurant itself was nice, but the shared restroom down a hallway in the back was a bit grimey. Overall I loved it and wish we had one in my neighborhood.
I love the food there. They have such amazing service and amazing people and when you enter in it’s a lovely place and has space enough to eat!
Great place for a delicious, affordable, and healthy meal in downtown. The toppings are fresh and flavorful. Poke and fish row quality are good.
This place is so good and cheap (for downtown Palo Alto). It's a great place to grab a quick, delicious bite! The onigiris are soft and flavorful, and the karaage chicken is perfectly crispy. I love the selection of flavors, and some of my favorites include the poke salmon, spam and miso beef. I did try the strawberry cream puffs and they were nothing special. Other than that, you really can't go wrong :)
The food is so tasty and filling, just 2 onigilly for $10, and lunch/dinner is ready (I’m a girl though)! Very nice people working at the cafe, super fast service! I think the light in the cafe is a bit bright (not warm), which maybe makes it a bit harder to sit for a long time, I’m surprised there were not as many people sitting inside!
mmmm yummy…. my current onigiri-fix place when i cant get to San Jose. We got $70-80 worth of takeout for 4people on a Sunday evening and the wait wasnt bad at all. We tried a lot of the onigiri, including Unagi, Eggplant, Tofu, Snow Crab, Spicy Shrimp, Ginger Beef, Salmon Tamako, Spicy Tuna Miso, and one of the tuna poke onigiris. What I’ll get again: Unagi, Eggplant, Tofu, Spicy Shrimp. These had the best flavor without needing to add any sauce, really rich. I can eat 30 of the unagi ones. Snow crab was a little bland to me but it was my family’s favorite, they got 6 more next time we ordered again. Tuna poke onigiri came with sauce I think and it was pretty good with it. Without it, kinda bland. Staff was chill and efficient. Coming back for 30 more unagi for me and 100 snow crab for my family.
We ordered for takeout, was ready in under 10min. Great quality, you could taste the fresh ingredients, bento boxes are very good value for money. Probably one of the healthiest fast food options around. Will come back.
Love their poke bowl! I love poke very much but this is the best poke place. My fav is signature poke with sesame dressing. With the mixed rice and greens, you will feel happy and full.
Onigilly is inspired by Japanese onigiri but it isn't the same thing. As long as you go in expecting that, it's fine. It's like going to Taco Bell despite it not being authentic. I got a set meal with two onigiri and some chicken karaage. The chicken was quite good. I liked the tempura shrimp onigiri although it was a bit messy. It would be better with less sauce. The haiga rice is a good compromise between white rice and brown rice. The salmon onigiri wasn't as good. All in all, it was a lot of food for the money.
It was a decently priced snack. Actually, I wouldnt really call it a snack either. Its size and nutritional value are both relatively large. I tried 4 and they were all pretty delicious. A small meal full of flavor, nutrients, and culture. Bonus attributes include its sleek modern design and its size fit very nicely in the palm of your hand.
Food was delicious and very unique. The meals can come in sets or small plates. The parts of each set was were individually portioned and neatly placed. The unagi was somewhat salty but that is due to diet. I will definitely come back and try the other sets. I also would like to introduce my family to these cultural dishes.
Order food for delivery from here every now and then and have a few favorites: spicy bacon onigilly, braised eel with BBQ sauce onigilly, soboro onigilly, and teriyaki chicken onigilly. Friends that I ordered for also liked the spicy miso beef onigilly and the wakame salad. Definitely a great choice for more upscale business lunches if you are to visit in person!
Pretty good, a little expensive but the taste is great. Found a small rock inside mi onigilli but I like the taste so Ill go again anyways
In place of fast food, I love stopping here for a relatively healthy and quick snack or meal. My personal favorite onigri is the cooked salmon and plum, or anything with the wasabi slaw in it!
3* for curry. Muracci's, Volcano -- many other options are better than the curry here. I personally wouldn't consider this Japanese curry, but that's just me. 4-4.5* for services. Pretty fast to serve food. Some folks seems more friendly than the other. 4* for atmosphere. Music is a little loud that force customers to have louder chatters. Seems a little crowded on a Saturday 2 pm where all the tables are occupied / not enough seats.
Good food, quick service and the place is clean
Came here to buy some onigiri for lunch during the first week soft opening. Disappointed that they hadn't yet set up their fryer yet so no kara'age onigiri :( Will have to come back next week. I tried 2 different sets (zosui with soup rice + 1 onigiri and edamame set with 3 onigiri). Taste was good though they aren't as authentic the ones made without the triangle cutters. They're also smaller in size than regular onigiri. I ate 4 onigiri + zosui soup rice to get full. I usually eat 2-3 regular onigiri.
Pretty tasty! The onigiri are 2 flat rice triangles with filling in between, which speeds up the making process. The sign says that the rice is custom milled brown rice, and supposedly as healthy as normal brown rice? I tried three: Salmon - a little overly salty, 2/5 Tarako - pretty tasty, slightly too salty, 3/5 Unagi - yum! 4/5 The edamame set is a good deal to try a bunch of flavors. Bring floss!
Good vegan options for onigiri and various side items. The set menus are a pretty good deal as well. Got the wakame salad meal with two onigiri - tofu teriyaki and shiitake. The salad was very fresh, with lemon only as dressing. The tofu onigiri was fine, though on the sweeter end for my own preference. Liked the shiitake onigiri better, which was more flavorful. Overall appreciated how fresh the onigiri were and the very fast service.
I ordered takeout from Onigilly since I’ve always wanted to try it! The onigiri were large and quite delicious (Though I personally prefer Tadaima onigiri). There were a wide variety of flavors to choose from as well, I personally picked the beef, salmon, and spam. The karage chicken portion was too small, I would hardly call the set meal a “bento”. Still, I am curious about the other toppings and will be back to try.
I've been wanting to try this for awhile and I'm glad I did finally. I ordered the 2 onigiri combo with karaage. It also came with edamame. The two rice balls I had are unagi (eel) and snow crab. I enjoyed both rice balls but the karaage is so so. The chicken is not bad but I'll probably skip it next time. It's good to have some edamame in the combo. I see some people complain about the price and I understand that onigiri are basically convenient store food in Asia but unfortunately that's true pretty much in the US where you get crappier food with higher price compared to Asia so I don't think it's fair to say it's the fault of this one restaurant. The place itself is bigger than you'd expect from the entrance and fairly clean. The service is alright and I did have to wait a bit before they gave me my pickup but not enough to say it's bad service because I'm sure they are busy by looking at the huge number of orders they already prepped before it's 11:15am.
Onigilly is like a staple work lunch takeout. I like the food here. My top two favorites are 1) shrimp set of 3 onigilly with edamame 2) salmon poke bowl (my husband's fav) The place is nice and bright but not too big. The place gets crowded during weekday lunch times. So I highly recommend a take out on GrubHub. The price is my only problem. It's insanely expensive. So l'd not rank this is a quick simple lunch bite that's budget friendly.
The ingredients were not as fresh as their other location. I do like how quick and convenient eating here is.
I was told that my card had been rejected and that I had to restart my order. I decided to leave and wait for the train instead, and 5min later I received a notification from my bank saying that my card had been charged. I tried to call the restaurant to tell them, the person I spoke with couldn’t speak English… I gave up. No big deal, but rather unpleasant experience.
If you’ve ever had really good onigiri, you know the rice they use here is pretty lacking. The grains are low quality with no chew and basically flavorless. The chicken karaage is solid though. Well seasoned and crispy. The topics in the onigiri are fine but nothing to write home about.
I got the bowl. The 2 viand options that I was asked to pick actually constituted a small portion of the bowl. Don't expect to just eat the viand options you chose plus rice, because it's full of vegetables in addition to the rice. 😂 Might be too healthy for some of you meat lovers out there. The other half is an actual salad which is not that travel-friendly because you have to pour out the dressing yourself. I did not end up eating the salad.
I ordered the vegan bowl and I have to say it was pretty mediocre. The temperature of the food itself was colder than room temperature which was off putting. And the flavors were pretty mediocre.
It’s just a quick snack bar. Not quite what I expected and definitely not as tasty as the real onigiri from 7/11 in Japan. The rice seemed like it had been pre-made some time ago, and the cream puffs were served cold. They wouldn't even agree to swap one strawberry cream puff for one matcha puff.
The service of the staff was kind and comfortable. Finally, I made it to visit this Onigilly store, a chain of Onigiri stores. Surely the quality is superior to that of other fake rice balls but still a lot to improve compared to what I had in Japan bought in convenience stores for $1 each. Still feels far more expensive to pay $25 for 2 onigiris, Karaages (was really hard thigh), egg omelet and ad-on French fried.
It is not an expensive place, really economical if you are looking for a quick dinner. You will place the order by yourself on the computer screen, make sure to checkyour order number, and you can watch the kitchen when they prepare your food. You can modify all plates and make your own poke. Food is fair for what you pay and a good spicy taste. There is not service at the table and you need to clean your on table. HVAC system should be set up with a better room temperature and music needs to have a lower volume.
Actually food is not bad but the worker kinda rude. We asked them about our orders because a couple items were missing. When we asked , a guy had an attitude right away. We have to show the receipt and asked him to check. Finally he didn’t even say sorry, he just said oh somebody took your orders. Excuse me!!!! Is it our fault? You didn’t check when you give them or they took it. Is it our fault to ask when we didn’t get our food? We thought even the food is good but we won’t come back because we don’t want that attitude. The owner should be aware of that. We know it kinda counter service and we didn’t expect to get any service but just want to get the right and complete order without their attitude. We just asked for what we PAID for, didn’t ask for free food !!!!
Ordered bento box and everything was meh. Only good thing was spicy chilli powder that we asked separately. Westfield location is better than Palo Alto. I
The chicken karaage was lukewarm. And croquette [2pc] was 1 croquette and the box it came with. Got shorthanded on that one. The staff were two bust chatting and tried to pass off old chicken. They seemed surprised that we wanted to eat in instead of taking it to go. Probably wanted us to get home and discover the shitty food at home so that we wouldn't return. They gave my wife newly fried chicken after she went back to complain. The fries also tasted bland, watery even. I came here because my employer got catering from this place and the catered food was decent. It was a whole different experience at the restaurant. The dining room is cold and sterile. There's no sizzle coming from the kitchen. I regret tipping server "kiosk." Won't be back, and I definitely won't recommend this place for catering. That sucks. We wanted to like this place, but we just can't. Too many better places to eat next door.
I am Japanese & I am on Keto Lifestyle for more than 13 years & I was way too excited to learn that Onigilly has Tofu Shirataki Noodle Soup!! However, they added way too much sugar to cook their chopped shiitake mushroom garnish so the miso broth got very syruppy sweet. For someone who's on Keto like myself wouldn't appreciate its high sugar contents in the broth even the noodle doesn't have any starch. I would love to come back if they stop putting sugar into this soup. I agreed with someone else suggested this noodle with chicken broth or I would love to try some Tonkotsu Pork Bone Marrow Soup with it.
Really bad onigiri. The rice is mushy, broken, and soggy and tastes like bad quality (has an off scent) which is disappointing since rice is the main part of almost all items sold here. The rice is also pressed into these ugly flat triangle moulds, not formed by hand, so instead of onigiri these are more like uncooked rice burgers. Fillings aren’t tasty at all. The spam one seems to be straight out of the can and not fried. The raw salmon with imitation crab salad is ok, they give you a lot of filling but the crab salad has no flavour. The seaweed they use is smelly and old-tasting. Do yourself a favour and get your onigiri from Nijiya market or something. The atmosphere in the store is soulless. Their water tastes like bathroom water, its gross for some reason.
Taste :1/5 Environment: 4.0/5 Service:3/5 We were first drawn in by the beautiful interior design and the concept the store advocates. Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the expectations. The ingredients and overall taste felt more like frozen food from the supermarket rather than freshly prepared dishes. The rice, in particular, was disappointing — it didn’t have the texture or flavor you’d expect from Japanese rice, and it was quite hard. I couldn’t even finish the set I ordered. While the atmosphere is inviting, the food quality really needs improvement to match the appealing space and branding.
This is my first ever review in Google and it’s for a reason. I placed an order for pickup but they never got it, I called and they still couldn’t find it. I didn’t see a place to cancel it, so I had to go all the way there to show them the confirmation I had. After that they were fast to give me the food, so that got one star. As for the food: I got the three piece bento box. It’s economical for the amount of food and the area, BUT the tuna used was canned, the BEEF used was ALSO canned. I mean, it tasted like dog food. The eggplant one was okay, I guess? The chicken karaage didn’t taste the best at all, the edamame was okay, and the pickled radish was old, thin, and dry. The best part was the small pieces of sweet egg, but I meant come on. Even if somewhat economical ($17) they used CANNED meats, and it was definitely not worth it to me as I couldn’t eat almost any of it. I was craving a different option for Asian food, and this didn’t taste like it at all. So disappointed.
Got sick last two times i ate unagi onigilly here Never again 🤮🤢 🚽
Overall a very disappointing experience. I love rice balls but the Salmon onigiri tasted like it was from a can. Karage chicken was dry and cold. Not worth the price at all.
I ordered onigiri and it was one of the worst ones I've ever had. The rice came pre-formed (out of a machine). It was a two-dimensional rice triangle and there were two of them slapped together with some filling in the middle. It was a rice triangle sandwich. Not good, definitely not authentic. Definitely nothing like those served in Korea or Japan.
My ratings are based on GF menus. They have a bunch of stuff advertised as Gluten Free. When I went in to pick up my food, I asked them to verify Gluten Free measures were used. They had no idea what I was talking about and even gave me regular soy sauce. What a disappointing experience!
I love Chicken Karaage. I have eaten it in Japan and across the US many times. And this is by far, the worst I have tried in my life. It is served old, cold, soggy, etc. The curry sauce is a gelatin. You guys should take it out of the menu.
We ordered for pick up - 3 onigilly set, 1 poke, and 1 karaage on 12/30/23. One of the onigilly, spicy shrimp already went bad to our surprise. Called the restaurant to let them know but no one was picking up the phone. Poke was okay but not sure how fresh are the raw ingredients they use in the poke bowls. Karaage seemed dry. Highly concerned about quality control and freshness of ingredients.
In one word: terrible. I admire what Onigilly is trying to do but, at best, this is a gross misrepresentation of what onigiri should be. 1. They use brown rice, which is distracting on the taste buds and all sorts of wrong for texture. For a dish that is primarily a celebration of rice, this is inappropriate. While I've seen some brown rice used in onigiri in Japan, this is absolutely atypical, and only accounts for one or two items on an entire menu. 2. Their "onigiri" is two triangles of rice around some filling. It's a triangle rice sandwich, really; not a filled rice ball. The employees don't even form the rice's shape. 3. The fillings are mediocre at best. Some were so sauce-heavy that they were overpowering / mask the main ingredient (e.g. protein). 4. This was outlandishly expensive; it cost us $40 for two people. Even very nice onigiri shops in Japan come in at a quarter of that. There's no reason for it to be this expensive in terms of ingredient cost - especially considering how little work goes into it. 5. The pickled radish is sliced so thinly that customers are robbed of the crisp bite they should be getting. Ultimately, Onigilly comes off as a very expensive fast food chain with a mass-produced feel. It's clearly aimed at maximizing profit, which might be good for business, but I can make much better onigiri at home with $4 worth of ingredients. There's nothing that would bring me back in when it's so easy to DIY. If you love onigiri, you're better off sticking with mass-produced Japanese market onigiri and save yourself the disappointment here.
Ordered a poke bowl, there was MOLD in the salad portion of the bowl…. Took this piece out, tore it apart and I can’t even hazard to guess what it is supposed to be? A ball of mold??? Absolutely foul. Is there no quality control? … I also spit out a fish bone….Threw up & tossed the rest, do not recommend & definitely won’t be back
