Outstanding Indian Dining at Ettan, Palo Alto **Exceptional flavors, creative dishes, and a beautiful ambiance** — Ettan in Palo Alto has truly raised the bar. We recently revisited after a couple of years and were impressed by how refined and balanced the cuisine has become. The Pani Puri was a standout, with crisp semolina shells and a refreshing **mint, pineapple, and jeera** mix — a unique twist on a classic. **Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer, jackfruit sliders and Dal** were perfectly seasoned and beautifully presented, while Carrot Kulfi and Kheer offered a subtle, elegant sweetness. The ambiance is sophisticated yet welcoming, blending traditional Indian design with modern touches. Special thanks to my colleague **Mona** for capturing stunning photos of the décor. The non-alcoholic beverages were inventive and flavorful, rounding out a truly exceptional experience. Ettan represents the best of contemporary Indian cuisine — refined, creative, and memorable. Perfect for business lunches, group gatherings, or special occasions, it’s a **must-visit five-star destination** in Palo Alto.
Mack, our server, was warm, cheerful, and genuinely eager to serve, making sure our orders were taken correctly and brought out promptly. The standout experience begins with the pineapple pani puri water, easily the best pani puri flavor I have ever had anywhere, tangy, refreshing, and perfectly balanced. The organic Khapli wheat roti was unique and wholesome, a delightful change from the usual. The paneer kalimirch was rich and flavorful, while the Haldiram style moong bean salad with pumpkin seeds and curry leaf chutney added a wonderful twist of texture and taste. The décor reflects the owner’s passion, with vibrant photos of Banjaras, possibly from Rajasthan, giving the restaurant a soulful charm. Overall, a heartfelt and beautifully executed dining experience that celebrates India’s culinary creativity in every detail.
I had such an incredible experience here! Jess was our server and he was absolutely amazing — warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely attentive. He guided us through the menu with such care, and his recommendations were spot-on. Every dish had the perfect balance of flavor, spice level, and consistency. It honestly felt like each plate was crafted with so much love and precision. Between the beautiful ambience, outstanding service by Jess and food made to perfection, this was easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time!100% recommended!
Dinner at Ettan is a memorable experience. We sat outside in the side patio. Very beautifully decorated. Service was top notch, worthy of a Michelin level dining. Everything we ate was delicious. Hard to pick a favorite, but 1 dish stood out - galouti kabab. Cocktail was worth every penny. Highly recommend for a special occasion.
We recently had a wonderful meal at Ettan in Palo Alto. For appetizers, we ordered the Black Truffle Kulcha, fried calamari, and the Lamb Galouti Kebabs. Everything was good, but the galouti kabab was truly outstanding — tender, beautifully spiced, and served on mini circular rotis that made each bite feel rich and memorable. For the mains, we chose the Magic Valley Trout in a fragrant Malabar-style curry and the Goan Tiger Shrimp cooked in a coconut curry lightly accented with mango. Both dishes were absolutely delicious. The shrimp paired perfectly with the creamy coconut and subtle sweetness of the mango, and the trout was flaky, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Ettan also served red rice, coconut rice, and pickles alongside the entrées, which complemented the curries wonderfully. The ambiance added its own charm to the evening. The décor is a lovely blend of traditional and contemporary, with vibrant touches throughout — and I especially loved the colorful umbrellas on the patio. The patio itself was warm, covered, and cozy, which made the dinner especially comforting on a chilly evening. Overall, this was a standout dining experience. The thoughtful flavors, creative presentation, and inviting atmosphere make Ettan a must-visit for anyone looking for inventive, memorable Indian cuisine in the Bay Area.
Had a birthday party here with a friend. It was a cold night but the outdoor seating was quite warm. Our server was very nice and cordial. We had a pre fixed menu. The dishes were incredible and I loved every one. See each photo for an explanation. Will definitely be coming back next time!
Great food selection, amazing drinks and top notch service with very indian vibes ambiance! Overall a great Indian restaurant. We tried the panipuri, asparagus kofta, lamb kebab and paneer dish. We also got garlic naan and parotha. The asparagus kofta was the most interesting dish in that day's menu. Overall everything tasted great.
Ettan may have a limited menu, but it’s exotic in a way you’ve never experienced. The ambience is perfect during the day, bright and inviting, and the service is very nice and attentive. All the dishes we tried were excellent, though the portions are a bit limited. Highlights include: • Samosas – crispy and flavorful chutneys • Bangalore Days drink – refreshing, with a taste that felt authentically Indian • Mushroom Tikka Curry with Pumpkin Seed Roti – a delightful blend and something out of box • Malabar Fish Curry with Coconut Rice – rich and perfectly balanced the fish was cooked very well with perfect roast of the skin A special mention goes to the house-made Carrot Kulfi, with freshly grated carrot and a subtle touch of pista – absolutely unforgettable. Perfect spot for a date or a relaxed meal, especially if you enjoy unique, thoughtful dishes with an Indian twist.
Very good food and ambience, only complain would be very few vegetarian options available. We had dal makhani and chole bature, both things were really good. The best part is that they serve each main dish with a side of bread(roti) instead of rice. Ambience is also top notch and so is the service. For desert we had tender coconut kheer. A must have.
If you’re looking for a reliable spot for a professional gathering in Palo Alto, Ettan is a standout choice. The team and I had a meal here, and the experience was seamless from start to finish. The restaurant strikes a great balance between a sophisticated atmosphere and a welcoming vibe, making it ideal for both focused discussions and casual team bonding. The menu is a major draw, offering a fantastic variety of dishes that hit the mark for everyone at the table. We explored a range of flavors, and the quality across the board was consistently high. Each dish felt thoughtfully prepared, using fresh ingredients that truly elevated the meal. It’s rare to find a place where every person in a large group walks away genuinely impressed by the food, but Ettan managed to do exactly that. The service played a huge role in making the evening a success. The staff was exceptionally attentive and professional, ensuring our needs were met without being intrusive. They kept the pace of the meal moving perfectly, which is crucial when you’re trying to balance conversation with dining. We never had to ask for refills or wait long for the next course; the team handled everything with impressive efficiency. Overall, the combination of excellent food and top-tier service makes this a highly recommended destination for any corporate event. It provided the perfect backdrop for our team to connect and enjoy a high-quality meal together in a beautiful setting.

Came here with friends for Diwali and pre-ordered the multi-course set menu with thali, biryani, chicken in a pumpkin-based sauce, and dessert. The ambience was amazing, and service attentive and friendly. The food was beautifully presented but tasted fairly average — similar to any decent Indian restaurant. Overall, it was a nice experience and worth the price, but I’d come back more for the great time with friends than for the food.
Ettan is a beautiful Indian fine dining spot with an amazing ambience. The Kerala fried chicken and pani puri appetizers were excellent. The paneer dish felt standard, and the lamb chops were hard to work with and could have been more flavorful, so overall the mains could have been better. Very friendly staff and excellent service made the experience enjoyable.
Well, it was a bit of a mixed bag, you know? On the one hand, the place had an amazing atmosphere. They’ve got these really cool images on the walls that really capture the essence of Indian culture. Now, the food was quite tasty for the vegetarians. But I noticed that the non-vegetarians didn’t seem to enjoy it as much. And let’s not forget, it’s a bit pricey. .
Ettan is a Michelin Guide listed spot with a really nice vibe, but I’d highly recommend making a reservation if you want indoor seating. I’ve never tried walking in, but you can try your luck since they usually have outdoor seating with heaters. Food Highlights: • Kerala fried chicken was tasty • Sesame leaf chaat was our favorite • Jackfruit sliders were surprisingly great, honestly feels like you’re eating chicken with a nice spicy kick • Vellore chicken curry was solid • Chicken biryani is a good safe option Skips: • Butter chicken was average, wouldn’t recommend Drinks We don’t drink alcohol and nothing non alcoholic stood out. I’d just stick with water. Service was nice, ambience is great if you like dim lighting, and it works for family, friends, or even a corporate dinner. Biggest downside: parking is hard, usually street parking.
We're vegetarians, there is a lot of options. Overall it's a limited menu. Ambiance and atmosphere were very good. Appetizers were all tasty - pani puri, Samosa etc. They were unique. Had a kofta curry with roti and garlic naan as the main entree. Curry was good but the breads were very ordinary. Definitely not worth the michelin recognition. Had a beer and lassi for drinks. Both were good. All the items are pricey. Okay to visit for a special occasion. It's off University Ave, in Palo Alto. Public parking is available within walking distance.
Loved the taste of every dish at Ettan!! Very rich in flavors and beautifully presented. I just wish they were a bit more generous with the portions. I never understand why some places cut quantity down in the name of fine dining. Plenty of amazing fine dining spots manage reasonable servings. Here, the portions felt noticeably small.
We dined here on a weeknight and the restaurant was at capacity, very vibrant atmosphere and ambience. But the food is overhyped and overpriced in my opinion . Jackfruit Vada pav was below average, it was flavorless . Sesame leaf chat concept was great, but not a feast to the taste buds , considering that it is an elevated take on street food. Mangalore buns with curry was different but not the dish I would crave for more . The breads (seed roti, chilli naan , garlic naan ) were impressively good . The Asparagus kofta was unique and the spice mix married well with the dish .The sesame and date drink was overly sweet . Other family members enjoyed the chicken . The paneer dish was bland . The customer service was subpar, the waiter would not even recommend any dishes or drinks /pairings with food .No eye contact or getting to know customers’ food accommodations. Did not have the Michelin experience I looked forward for .
All of the food was excellent. I already love Indian food, but this was the best Indian cuisine I’ve ever had. The fried chicken was a bit too salty—it seemed heavily brined—which was the only disappointment, as everything else was great. The desserts were outstanding as well—absolutely delicious.
Stopped in for lunch today. The starters were a solid start, though nothing out of the ordinary. The main course, however, was the highlight specifically the paneer! It was my first time trying it here, and you can really tell it's made in-house; the texture and flavor were outstanding. The butter chicken was good, though I’ve had slightly better versions here in the past. We finished with dessert, and the Kulfi was a total standout. Definitely worth a visit for the house-made paneer alone!
I had my first date here! Overall, the venue was gorgeous, with the decor being really modern takes on indian palace vibes. It was gorgeous, and the skylight in the middle made it a magical evening. The service was also efficient, and the waiter was really nice about telling us that one of the drinks should be sampled as a shot first before we went to get the whole thing. Most importantly, the food was very good! It’s a unique blend of modern Indian. My date liked the spaghetti squash cutlets, I really liked the Paneer Avocado Curry, it was such a good combo that i would never have thought about. The only thing is that it wasnt worth the price, I would only come here again for a special occasion (like an anniversary 👀)

Recently went to this place for dinner. We ordered Panipuri biryani and a chicken starter. These were all recommended by the staff. Panipuri was right. Biriyani was a little dry, and the chicken was good. Overall, the food was good, but the place is costly, and we didn’t understand why! the place is huge they have indoor and outdoor seating. They also have first seating, beautiful Decor and interior. Love the vibe of the place, but the food was alright. Would come again to try something else.
Stopped by for lunch with some work colleagues. We shared 2 order of vada pav a street food popularized in Maharashtra state of India and Ettans offering has the same soft bun and crispy potato fritter, but lacks the garlic chutney. We also ordered the Chicken biryani which was moist and had plenty of chicken meat. The chicken curry was ok and the nans were really not the traditional bread but rather variant which did not come from a tandoor
Review is for a weekday lunch prix fixe. We got the jackfruit sliders and grilled shrimp for appetizers- good! Our mains were butter chicken and paneer Kali mirch- the butter chicken was mediocre at best! The sauce for the paneer was the saving grace here. We were given complimentary sides of tandoori roti and coconut rice which was nice. Lastly for dessert, we picked the chocolate mousse and carrot malai kulfi, the latter being a total miss for me- it tasted heavily of milk powder and too dense and cakey to be called a kulfi. For a place listed on the Michelin guide 2025, some of the dishes were truly disappointing.
Went with a few friends for dinner, here's a few takeaways: 1. We ordered Ananas Pani Puri and Sesame Leaf for snacks, Mangalore Bun and Kerala Fried Chicken for starters and Homemade Paneer Kalimirch, Red Chard Patra, Chicken Tikka & Kale for mains: (i) Sesame Leaf, Ananas Pani Puri, Kerala Fried Chicken and Red Chard Patra were good overall, all of the rest was honestly just decent (not worth the price). (ii) Food quality was good. (iii) Food quantity was very much on the low end. (iv) Quality of paneer could have been better. 2. Service was good and timely. 3. Ambiance was good, as expected from a place like Ettan. 4. Lots of street parking and public parking garages around. 5. We had a reservation but it wasn't required.
drinks were meh. Outdoor seating view was facing traffic. Not what I expected. Service was good though.
I really wanted to love this place because Ettan is absolutely beautiful. The ambiance is lovely, and both the food and drinks were genuinely good.\nUnfortunately, the service fell short in a way t…
We were at the place for Diwali brunch on Saturday with 1.30pm reservation. The aim was only one. Experiencing a Michelin star restaurant and treat ourselves. Let me tell you the brunch was a 75$ thali. completely average looking thali with below average taste of food and below below average presentation of food. Clicked the thali for reference. Do zoom in to see few onion pieces and the raita presentation. Their kofta was black and hard to crack. Their biryani was just pulao with too much spices and the drink that came with it was not a drink but a shot of chhanchh. Dessert was ok. We did eat and left feeling completely frustrated. Fremont chaat Bhavan below 15$ thali is better looking, tastes great and have better vibes then this one which comes with a full glass size chhaanchh. Fremont Garam mirchi thali is amazingly huge and tasty, ambience and the deco will make you feel more special. All three of us complained of bloating while coming back but out of all three I felt sick in the stomach. I do intermittent, so that was the first food that went in my stomach. I am 44 and not allergic to any food. I am Indian and so eat Indian food all the time. I felt even worst once I reached home. after two hours or so I threw up everything. I was in severe stomach pain for six hours and felt miserable. Over all a total disaster. its not difficult for us to judge the richness or taste of Indian food. completely average. Disappointing.
Overall the experience was lacking for a fine-dining restaurant. I think the starters need a revamp. They felt bland to me especially the methi matar kebab. For the price point the food wasn’t good overall. The main course paneer dish was tasty gravy wise but I felt the paneer to be stiff and hard . Overall I believe that for fine dining the restaurant need to upgrade the food. For a bill of $150 I didn’t like the food to taste good. I felt other economical restaurants have better tasting food. The dessert(Bartlet pear) was not good. The icecream proportion was very small and the ghee cake was bitter. Vibe wise the tables didn’t have the table cloth. Overall, the food was not tasty for a $150 bill.
