Jade Island is a Staten Island legend—timeless tiki-Chinese spot that's been around forever and still delivers! Pu-pu platter came flaming and loaded (egg rolls, ribs, shrimp—perfect), lo mein was fresh and flavorful, and the pineapple cocktails are a must. Food is consistently excellent and generous. Atmosphere is pure retro magic: dark booths, totem poles, tropical vibes—feels like a fun escape. Service was okay (friendly staff but a bit slow when busy). Worth it for the experience—love this place!
Best of the best! Makes me wish I still live on Staten Island, but we make it a point to go there every single time we visit. I grew up on Staten Island and this place has not changed one bit. It's 50+ years old, and everything around it has changed dramatically, but yet they still have top shelf old school NYC Chinese food. This place is a real treat don't miss it!!!!
Prices have gone up quite a bit. Other than that…. Jade Island is a true Staten Island gem that offers a perfectly nostalgic and delightful dining experience. From the moment you walk in, the fun, classic tiki atmosphere sets a fantastic mood. The food is always fresh and satisfying, with their signature Cantonese and Polynesian dishes hitting all the right notes. Whether you're enjoying a legendary Pu Pu Platter or a flavorful Mai Tai, Jade Island provides great service and an atmosphere that guarantees a memorable time. Get the Coconut Drink!!!
We had a great time revisiting Jade Island after probably over 30yrs since our last visit. I don't know why it was so long because we always had great meals and a great time. Nothing has changed with the decor or the food. The atmosphere was very lively, it seems with the many social media videos has given JI a rebirth which was great to see. Our next visit will definitely be much sooner.
Anytime I come back to Staten Island, the Jade is where I go. This place has been open since the 70s. The food is outrageous. You feel like you just stepped on an episode of fantasy island. They still have drinks with the fancy umbrellas . Get the pu pu platter.. the wonton soup is the best.. anything you order is insane. The portions are huge. It’s not expensive. It’s in a summer plaza but ignore it because when you step in , you are going to be pleasantly surprised. They used to have these murals in the tiki huts that moved.. like a waterfall. My whole childhood was there. So adorable.. for families, couples and date night
when I tell you this place is a complete hidden gem (not so hidden since it is still pretty popular) but all my years living in this island, i’ve never had it. such amazing authentic chinese food. best on the island, not fast food, real cooked meals. great family meal deals and even had a ton of food left over it was amazing great service, the staff were so welcoming and friendly. will definitely be coming back for more!
My grandparents, parents, and now myself and my siblings have come to Jade Island for decades. Now living in PA, we aren’t able to come as often but to this day after living in PA for over 15 years, Jade Island is still our favorite Chinese restaurant and food! Nothing compares. Atmosphere, vibes, food, even the kindness of John and the staff. While some may say the inside is outdated, I truly believe that it adds to the charm. I never want it to change lol. And while my family member, a weekly visitor to Jade Island, was in the hospital they sent along his favorite drink as a treat in an awful time and offered to visit. I will never run out of wonderful things to say about Jade Island and highly, highly recommend it. There’s no place like it. I can’t wait for my next generation to love it as much as I do!
There isn't a more friendly place on the island than jade Island. Im pretty sure it is family run since I've seen the same faces there for over 20 years. The food is the best Chinese food around, no competition. The drinks are crazy. Take a look at the menu, they have hollowed out coconuts and pineapples with lots of really good tiki drinks in them.
this place is an absolute gem. Obviously the decor is amazing tiki-style, but the food was SO good and the drinks as well! You can find classic tiki drinks like don the beachcomber's zombie and the chi chi, as well as retro desserts like jello and ice cream. The service was great as well and we could not have had a better experience.
This is an old school Chinese restaurant, one of the last places left where the atmosphere brings me back to being a kid in the 80’s when eating out Chinese was the best. But this time we ordered for pick up. I ordered online, and the food was ready quick.. I was greeted by a super friendly host as soon as I walked in. The food was great! It was funny because even though we didn’t get to enjoy the ambience eating there, I felt like I had a ‘vintage’ chinese take out experience.. the wonton soup had a bunch of pork in it and the green leafy veg - not sure if it is bok choy, but this is what wonton soup used to look like years ago and most places don’t serve like that anymore. Also I got a big bag of really good fried noodles and a nice size container of duck sauce which was so good and a nice change from the little packets places usually give. They also included a little packet that had the typical soy sauce, wonton cookies and surprisingly… tea bags, which really solidified the nostalgia for some reason... The other food we got was roast pork lo mein - was delicious and the fried pork wontons were great.. they had so much flavor. Overall a great experience at Jade Island for take out.. definitely want to eat in soon to enjoy the vintage nostalgia but I appreciated the little touches they add in for take out.
Jade island is a treasure! It is a throw back to an old school by Chinese food restaurant with tiki themes. This will instantly bring you back to the 1980s Ny Chinese restaurant experience. Food is great, service is amazing atmosphere is fun. It's a bit more expensive but your paying for the nastolgia, good food and fun atmosphere. Well worth the visit
So Good! I went last Wednesday. I was so hungry and I found Jade Island. I went and had a booth for one and I was immediately served with crunchy noodles, duck sauce, hot mustard sauce, pot of tea and glass of water (which was refilled often) the waiter was very nice and the place was clean. I ordered pepper streak w/white rice. Oh, my God!! It came in a nice silver holder and a spoon. The steak was so tender, the green peppers were so tender, the onions were delicious and the gravy was delicious 😋 I put my rice on the plate and added the pepper steak 😋 the combo was so delicious i couldn't stop refilli g my plate!😋 I had a nice amount too!! This Chinese restaurant is my favorite place to go when I leave my doctors appointment at The Blood/Cancer Spot. I had to give the waiter $10 tip because he was very attentive to me and the food is off the hook. Also, as I sat, more customers arrived to enjoy Jade Island. Thank God I found Jade Island and thank you Jade Island 😊 I am getting my infusion now and at 11:30 am, I will be ordering my Chinese food 😋❤️😋
Giving it 3 stars - The food is still great, the only "old school" Chinese dine in restaurant left in my opinion. We drive over an hour from northern New Jersey just to have their lobster cantonese! Spare ribs are still great. In reality only true place to get roast pork fried rice, and you can't beat the shrimp with lobster sauce. But what I've noticed the last three times we've been there is the amount of food that leaves the table to be packed to take home is never the amount of food when we open the containers later. I was extremely confident about the amount of roast pork fried rice that left our table, not less then the little bit in the smaller container. Definitely left two large shrimp, only one in the container. Roast pork with string beans, only had a few string beans on the container. I find it extremely disappointing as I've been a patron here for almost fifty years. I did call the next day and spoke with a woman who claimed to be a manager, she was going to call me back... She knew exactly who we were as she knew the total of our bill @$279.00, plus $50 cash tip. We order to take food home. Sad that I'll never go back, our loss.
After decades going to my regular Chinese take out, I decided to give Jade Island a try. I "assumed " that their high prices were indicative of the quality of their food, I was wrong. The food was tasteless and I was not able to eat it because of this. I'll be going back to my tried and true restaurant in the future.
Horrible experience. They take reservations but do not honor them. When I checked in for my reservation the masked woman behind the counter told me “ I don’t know if I will have a table for you tonight “ my response was what’s the point of making a reservation. The women next to me was already waiting an hour for her “reservation.” It was quite obvious it was first come first serve. Not a good business model to maintain or create new customers. Never tried the food and never will.
I placed an order online and the restaurant didn’t even have the common courtesy to call me and let me know that there would be a 3 hour long wait. I called three times over the span of 2 hours, the first couple of times they told me the food was on the way. They didn’t tell me about the long wait until the last call and at that point I cancelled my order. I normally like Jade Island and have been going to them for years, and while I understand I placed an order on a holiday this is absolutely unacceptable. Busy times are totally understandable but if you can’t fulfill an order within a reasonable time frame you should let your customers know so they can cancel and not wait three hours for food.
I only gave them 1 star because I had to! We have been going there for years. This time we got the poo poo platter for 2. Its was dripping with GREASE. THE MEAT WAS SO OVERCOOKED I COULDN'T CUTIT WITH A KNIFE! we ate nothing off of it. We asked for the manager. He said everyone else ate it today. I said good for them..Ours was horrible. I showed him. He said ill take $5 off. I said don't insult me. I paid the entire bill. Will NEVER GO BACK! TRUST ME ITS NOT THE SAME. DONT GO HERE!!
I made a 6 pm reservation for Christmas day. When we arrived it was a chaotic scene. Told them i had a reservation and was written down on a list. As we were waiting we heard the others saying that they had made reservations and were waiting an hour plus. So Jade Island took reservations and didn't honor any of them. For a place that's been around so long you'd think they'd have the basics down. Totally inept, they messed up our and many others Christmas plans (we weren't the only ones who walked out). Never going back. Shameful. Had to leave a rating but actually NO STARS.
What they severly lack in flavor they attempt to make up for in portion size but dont be fooled. The food was completely dry and tatseless. I ordered a spare rib tips with and sesame chicken both with pork fried rice and a side order of chicken wings. I still don't understand how my order came to over 50 dollars for two plates and wings. The chicken wings are listed as an 8 piece, but what I got instead was four wings chopped. Infuriating ! Plus, they give you egg rolls with your platter but fail to mention that they have shrimp in them. Thankfully, I tried it first because my husband is allergic. I asked over the phone if the spare ribs have the red sauce, and the implication was that the plate combo I ordered came with it. I received two sauces on the side, both of which I did not ask for nor know what they are. Plus, it didn't make sense to get two soy sauce packages for two large plates of food. Needless to say, I won't order here again. Very upsetting and highly dissatisfied. This seems like a place you can only get trashed at because a majority of the 5 start reviews are from people who have had drinks. Kinda low if you have to attract customers by getting the inebriated.
