Would recommend this place to anyone. Food service and place fabulous. We had the tasting menu with wine. Fantastic is the only way to describe. Will definitely be back. Amazing 5 stars alround. Special touch with receiving the personal signed birthday card from all at yhe house of tides. Made my day.

Fantastic meal, it was quiet (Friday afternoon) but the food and staff were excellent. Good selection of whiskeys and a couple of cracking beers. Recommended.

Absolutely incredible service and atmosphere from one of Newcastle's few Michelin starred restaurants (one of the others being its sister- Solstice, both by Kenny Atkinson). The staff were attentive and passionate about the food, restaurant and city. The building itself is full of olden charm and allows the vibe to be high-end but unpretentious. The drinks/wine list was long and plentiful with the option to add a pairing to your tasting menu. The menu itself was fresh, delicious, seasonal and without fault. We opted for the extra course of langoustine and scallop agnlotti which was incredible. My other favourite dish would be the ceviche which was also plated beautifully. On the whole, exceptional and I'll most definitely be heading back or to Solstice when I'm next back in the motherland.

The scran is absolutely elite, unbelievable flavour and beautifully presented. Although on the smaller side due it being a taster menu it’s still unreal. The waiting staff present your bait and tell you in detail about it. We didn’t opt for the paired wine but we did get the cocktails which were very strong but very tasty. Overall a lot of money for a different experience, a big occasion type of meal.

We did the seven course meal. Every dish was excellent and the service was great.

We went for a lunch sample menu on a Saturday. The food was perfectly balanced and not one course disappointed. The portions initially may look small, but with the number of courses and the flavours that come through, it is satisfying and scrumptious, and we did not leave hungry, like some people have mentioned. I feel people making those comments don't actually appreciate beautifully crafted and balanced meals. I also chose the additional cheese board, which I expected to be quite small, but it wasn't. There was a very good amount of cheese for the extra cost. I would definitely opt for it again. We opted for the wine pairing to go with the courses, and they were perfectly matched to either complement or cut through the flavours. The staff member explaining the wine was very professional and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was great, in the gorgeous wonky listed building. It has been decorated and celebrated well. Love the exposed brick and the large fireplace. The staff were knowledgeable, kind, and very attentive. We will definitely be going back for an evening meal.

Such a special place, utterly stunning food and fantastic service. You are made to feel very welcome and cared for. It's exquisitely decorated, the rest rooms even have a spa like quality with oil burners emitting gorgeous essential oil fragrances. The tasting menu was beautiful balanced and bursting with flavour. I would 100% recommended a visit for a special occasion. Will definitely be returning and trying their sister restaurant Solstice. Thank you House of Tides for an incredibly special evening.

Had the tasting menu with my wife with the wine pairing. The food was unbelievable as we'd expected it would be. However, the staff were just as impressive. Loved it. If you're getting the wine pairing, don't go for 4 pints before hand then get a cocktail when you arrive. Rumour has it, that would make so absolutely mortal by the 3rd course.

Dinner. Celebrating 10 years and still going strong. A multi award winning restaurant on the banks of the Tyne,in a Grade I listed 17th century merchant house. Looks can be deceiving as when we looked through the window earlier while passing,it looked empty. We didn't realise that was the bar and the restaurant was upstairs. It was a good job we booked as it was full to capacity. The ground floor is like an old pub where you can have a pre-dinner drink. The dining room is on the first floor, with a view out over the river. The menu is a simple choice. Well, it's a set five course tasting menu £98. Having said that, they have changed it slightly as there's also a seven-course from February £130. Snacks were a Jeruselum Artichoke Dashi Custard and a mouth-watering Croissant, black garlic, winter truffle. Sourdough Bread with whipped toasted sunflower seed butter. Salt Baked & BBQ Swede * Goats cheese mousse, hazelnut, kale Whitby Crab, butternut squash, coriander, curry & spiced granola. Salt Aged Beef Tartare with Lincolnshire poacher.* Served with a Beef Fat Brioche on the side. Hen of the Woods, smoked & pan-roasted, truffled potato puree, hazelnuts & chive. Star of the show,Main course Rare breed pork, belly & loin, bok choy, onion & black garlic. Desserts. Yorkshire Rhubarb * Dark chocolate & orange crémeux, coffee & praline. *These were dishes that Head chef Scott Black let us try before the New February menu, and they are sure to be winners. The kitchen technique is good, and the service was charming, attentive yet relaxed, and friendly. Strong Michelin star cooking and reasonable value.

First time being in a Michelin ⭐ restaurant and really enjoyed the service and the food. The service was 10/10 and I mostly appreciated that the menu was fish oriented which you would expect. Nothing compares with the quality, the thought and the effort they put into the dishes.

Amazing food, innovative beautifully presented and most importantly delicious to eat. The paring offers unique wines that compliment the food, and Matt explains the wines in a fun and easy to understand manner. All the staff were top notch. We were on our honeymoon, definitely recommend for any special occasion

Solid cooking with some genuine highlights. Wine suggestions were a little weak in places. Nice decor. Attentive staff. Price is comparable to other 1 star. Cooking better than some 2 stars

Was absolutely excellent. Had the tasting menu. The food is exceptional and the quality of this food will be hard to beat. The taste and textures combine give such an experience. Service was outstanding and informative. The best in any restaurant I’ve ever eaten in. The attention to detail is leagues apart from anywhere else. An all round great experience and can easily see why they have the Michelin Star. 10/10

Fantastic experience, food was incredibly tasty and very arty. Service provided was excellent. Setting was lovely. Booking is straight forward and hassle free. Gluten free varient of the menu is also available which was fantastic. Not suitable if you don't like seafood as a few of the dishes are fish/shellfish. Also if you're expecting large portions you'll be disappointed.

Food and service second to none. Travelled mainly to try this place and well worth the drive. The tasting menu was well thought out and decently priced compared to other Michelin stars we have tried. Laid back atmosphere and not pretentious. Would definitely recommend

Amazing way to celebrate walking Hadrian's Way. Impossible to single out my favourite dish as they were all so delicious, tasting even better than they looked. The paired wines were well worth it with a few surprises thrown in. My favourite restaurant of all time.

This was our first visit to House of Tides. As we're not accustomed to such upmarket restaurants, despite our excitement we were little apprehensive that we would feel slightly out of place. We needn't have worried. Our server was incredibly polite and friendly. She immediately put us at ease before showing us to our table in the bar area. Here we were given the menu for the evening and had time to deliberate over which drinks to choose from the superb selection. My choice was a delicious Belgian sour beer while my partner chose a Berry cocktail whose smell conjured childhood memories of picking blackberries from hedgerows down country lanes. Shortly after, our server provided some solid advice on our wine selection before the first course of the evening, Tomato and Cumin Gougere, was delivered. Following our first course we were shown to our table in the dining room for the rest of the evenings delights. While I would love to give detailed descriptions of what followed, my vocabulary simply will not do it justice. Having said that, I would like to give a shout out to the Dashi Meringue, cucumber and dill. This little mouthful of flavour was my favourite of the night. If perfection could be sold in food form, for me, this is it. Aside from the food, it is certainly worth noting in that the service is second to none. Our server was attentive and polite. We nearly noticed any servers at all unless they were delivering food or wine. On the subject of food and wine service, we couldn't help but notice the synchronisation of service on some of the larger tables. This attention to detail is what sets restaurants like this apart from others. Amazing. All in all, easily the best all round restaurant experience of my life. I couldn't recommend more highly.

If you love beautiful food, beautifully presented then you'll love this place. Michelin starred for a very good reason. Great flavour combinations, perfectly balanced. Pricey, but worth it for a very special occasion.

A

the food was a taste sensation every taste bud was awakened from a deep sleep. not cheap but if you want Michelin star cuisine in a non pretentious setting this for you it's all about the food not cheap and only tasting menu available but if you fancy a treat or have a special occasion this is the place to visit. The presentation was fantastic all senses alive for a beautiful surprisingly filling 7 course feast. The courses are sometimes bitesize so just enough space in the tum to finish.

First time in Newcastle and wanted to visit this restaurant and was not disappointed. Beautiful building, knowledgeable and friendly staff and a tasting menu with wines to remember. Top marks and would happily return.

A quality restaurant with attentive and knowledgeable staff. It's a special kinda treat for yourself or family members. It ain't cheap, but quality never comes on a shoestring budget. There's a relaxing atmosphere with an extensive wine selection to purchase, or you can pair the wines with your sampling menu at additional cost. I have to say, this is a classy addition to Newcastle's restaurant circuit.

Had an amazing meal here for my wedding anniversary, but also the most expensive when you add in the wine flight, but worth every penny

House of Cards is a beautiful building set underneath I rather imposing structure of a bridge parking is opposite and fairly reasonable the Welcome is good they offer you the choice to sit and enjoy in the bar before hand or head on upstairs they take a note of where you are from and ask questions in a place manner to engage with you the service is excellent and stuff and knowledgeable of the products and dishes they are serving the food is second to none and a second star would not be out of place with a few improvements on the floor and a few other characteristics I would highly recommend it for a special occasion for when you want to feel like you are deserving of some quality

Ordered a home box for one and didn't regret. Too bad I didn't get a chance to dine at the restaurant in before lockdown but would love to go again in the future. Enjoyed every bite.

Fantastic, Michelin-starred restaurant. Had a wonderful meal and also enjoyed the wine flight. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. A true dining experience. Loved the beginning where they show you to the bar so you can have an aperitif and review the menu. A nice touch.

Excellent food, possibly the best I have ever had. Staff is very attentive, helpful, and friendly. Good selection of drinks, both for the beers and the wine. Might seem like you don't get a lot of food, but as you get 9 or 10 courses, it ends up with a decent amount of food, but don't expect to leave bursting.

Best food I’ve had! I’m not sure I’d get the wine tasting menu - in future I’d rather order a few bottles of wine.

Had lunch here today with my family for my father's 80th birthday. Cannot fault the food, service, venue or indeed the whole experience. A special shout out to Connor who looked after us brilliantly! Thank you all for a great experience, I hope to return again soon.

Overall a really great experience. The tasting menu was wonderful and both the asparagus and the chicken were exquisite. The onion and chive butter at the start and the passion fruit sorbet at the end were highlights of the night. The steak add on was a bit of a let down compared to everything else but still very nice.

I'm lucky enough to have eaten at a few nice restaurants now, and I'm comfortable saying that this one was the best I've been to. The service was absolutely excellent as soon as we sat down, friendly and helpful without being overbearing. We had the chefs feast and it was amazing. All the starters coming together was great, and they were all absolutely delicious, I'm not sure I'll ever forget the smoked olives. The mains were wonderful and the wine was also incredible. It is expensive, but it's a Michelin star restaurant, so you expect it really. Would definitely go again!

I came with my parents for my birthday and firstly the staff were super accommodating to my mums food preferences which are admittedly quite confusing. They were also super attentive and friendly. Our cocktails were lovely and the food was incredible with generous portions. They packed up all our leftovers very neatly in a bag, didn’t rush us and made our time special. I especially thought the chicken dish was delicious and my mum loved the mandolin dessert. Obviously on the pricey side but worth a visit for a treat. The pictures don’t show all the courses, just a few.

Last went a couple of years ago when I would have rated it 5 stars.. this time it's a 4. Reasons, although it cost less than our previous visit, we felt the quality of the food had been reduced to cater for that. Every mouthful on our previous visit was met with smiles due to the flavours of each dish from the tasting menu.. this time this didn't happen. Although good, starters definitely didn't have the wow factor at all, normal in taste just that they were fine, a 3 out of 5. Main courses were good though, still no wow feeling like previous visit, but still lovely (4 out of 5) and desserts were similar very good but not outstanding, 4 out of 5. Add in a £60 bottle of wine and a service charge, it makes it a pricey day for a good meal.. not a memorable meal which we had 2 years ago, which cost more but made us want to come back at a future date.. unfortunately our recent experience disappointed us slightly and we will have to go somewhere else to try and get that feeling again.

Lovely place, great ambience, feels very cozy and intimate. The food was great, balanced courses, great flavours. The starter was splendid, would come back just for it. The lamb was great, even if the star of the course was actually the vegetables and purée. The dessert was one of the best I’ve had, I hope to have it again in the near future. It loses one star because compared to other similarly starred restaurants I’ve been in Europe, it is more expensive for the experience it provides. More than a single starter is a staple, and ongoing bread and butter wouldn’t hurt also. Other than those it’s an experience I would recommend.

B
Brian Sentance

Great meal with a few things that could be improved. I thought the food was overall great, but one small part in each of two courses were over-salted. Wine list great. The service was young and inexperienced and not to the standard at other Michelin starred restaurants. The need to invest more time educating the staff maybe. In contrast, the manager was really helpful and knowledgeable about the food and wine. Atmosphere was ok, room a bit big maybe to encourage this or maybe that we were located at one end of it?

D
DAVID Robson

Very expensive but nothing exceptional about the food. The main course of Sea Bream was very salty and the waitress said she would let the kitchen know!!! It was a special occasion as it was a wedding anniversary which we stated at the time of booking however no attempt was made to make us feel special.

Feels like you’re paying for the name rather than the food. The tasting menu felt very uninspired and rather standard.

I have been looking forward to coming here for years. Having worked hospitality and eaten at a lot Michelin restaurants around the world, I had great expectations. You go to restaurants like this for the experience - it’s about the ‘theatre’ - the attention to detail of the wait staff/service, the menu/food/flavours and of course the ambience. While the food was lovely and the staff were friendly - I felt the restaurant doesn’t know what it is. I left feeling that it was a nice dinner - but not to the level that it sells itself as. Service - there was a lack of attention to detail. For instance, we had to top our own water up, we had to ask what the dishes were that we were being served and no one thought about giving us our coats at the end of the night - we had to ask several staff. The prices paid at a restaurant like this, you just can’t switch off - which sadly happened on this Saturday night. Any other restaurant I wouldn’t care - but a Michelin restaurant I expect more. Food - was lovely and very tasty. There were no flavours or combinations that I thought were life changing. There was no amuse-bouche - but the cod and beef were nice. The flavours of the cabbage side with the beef was the most memorable. The wine list was fine - however it is served to you on an iPad which did kind of ruin the ambience of the dinner to look and scroll on an iPad. Ambience - lovely old building - but again I felt there were simple wins that were missed. Staff didn’t split the tables up, so while the restaurant was only half full, they sat us all next to each other and left half of it empty which was odd. The music was also random. Billy Joel, modern pop and not what I would call background music. Lastly, these restaurants tend to be for special occasion destinations. For us it was our 11 year anniversary. When you tell staff they usually make a fuss, or plate your desert with happy anniversary written in chocolate or something random. While it may feel naff - it is important to remember that restaurants like this specialise in ‘special occasion’ dinning. Again, even while knowing it was our anniversary I couldn’t help feeling a bit unloved because nothing was done to make us feel special at all. Not a big deal, but again this is not a normal restaurant, which is reflected in its price. And then the bill came out with a £59 tip automatically put on it (15%). A bit excessive - I wouldn’t normally mind paying it if the service was great - but it was ordinary. I paid it anyway - but I did leave the night with a bad taste in my mouth. So yeah all in all disappointing. If this was a restaurant like 21 - I wouldn’t haven’t have felt the same way - however I wouldn’t have just blowing £450 on a dinner for two.

#food The first course served at the table came in three parts, all put in the centre (three of each). The first I tried was a small ice-cream cone containing liver parfait and sultanas, with a lovely mild curry flavour; the second a tiny macaron, described on the menu as, Carrot meringue, carrot curd, fennel pollen; the third a fresh oyster from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne with cucumber, ginger and ‘caviar’. All were lovely and exceptionally fresh tasting but I discovered for myself, that the order in which you eat them is important. I really wish I’d started with the oyster (the mildest of the three elements), then the parfait, finishing with the macaron. Mackerel is a simple yet lovely fish, especially when served with something a little sour to cut through the oiliness of the fish itself. In this case the menu promised, Mackerel, artichoke, blackberry. Ok, so a tart blackberry should be a good foil to the oily mackerel but I was half way through before I realised there was nothing resembling a blackberry on my plate. Adam, who hadn’t served this course to us, explained that there had been a menu substitution consequently we had mackerel, apple and pickled radish before us. The pickled radish might’ve offered that sourness I was looking for but sadly, in reality, it didn’t. The tiny pieces of fish though were very yummy. A little bit here about the service. I can’t abide an overly obsequious waiting style. It makes me feel guilty about the fact that someone is waiting on me. It’s opposite vice, indifference to the needs or wants of the diner, is equally abhorrent. The staff at House of Tides get it right in my view. They are attentive (wine glass always unobtrusively topped up), interested to know how we found the food and (apparently) keen to receive constructive criticism. ‘Our’ Adam in particular was invisible until we needed him, then unfailingly polite and scrupulously professional. He deserves to go far in his career. Back to the food! Next up was the first of two meat courses; in this case, Venison tartare, beetroot, blueberries and kale. It was a suitably tiny portion, presented in a ‘pile’ on a dark plate. I was intrigued. Two flavours dominated – blueberry and deep fried kale. The kale was reminiscent of that so-called ‘seaweed’ you get from Chinese take-aways, which is deep fried shredded cabbage sprinkled with powdered scallops. I love it. For the life of me though, once I’d put that morsel of flavour into my mouth and a blueberry, I couldn’t distinguish the taste of the venison at all, nor indeed of the beetroot, which in my view should have provided an earthy flavour. I’m not sure what the solution to this is, but I hope my feedback makes them think again about this particular combination. The lamb dish, which followed, did not have the same issues at all. The testimony to how much I loved this dish is that I didn’t stop eating it long enough to take a photograph! The menus told us it would be, Lamb, broccoli, tomato, radish, and so it was, but that’s only the start!!! The lamb was rump, tongue and sweetbreads. The rump was beautifully cooked, a vibrant reddish-pink colour and very flavoursome, however, the offal stole the day. Last time I had (veal) sweetbreads I really didn’t enjoy them and although I love eating cold pressed ox and pork tongue I’d never before eaten lamb tongue. The sweetbreads were crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with just enough firmness to allow you to bite into it before it started to dissolve. And so to the puddings. We next tucked into, Raspberry, lemon, pine nuts, which was in fact a light, sharp and delicious lemon posset with a pine nut crumble and raspberry sorbet on top. Heaven! The Pear, almond, ginger second pudding was equally delicious and light but by now the over-enthusiastic heating in the dining room was making us tired and longing for some cool, fresh air

Nice atmosphere and faultless service. Just didn't think the Sunday Dinner particularly nice. I left much of it and I'm usually hoovering everyone else's leftovers up.

Disappointing revisit, I think the chef (owner) needs to refocus on this once fantastic restaurant. A beautiful building in a prime location. I agree with the previous review it must be at risk of losing its Michelin star. Firstly the taster menu price is deceptive as without the extras, which are the far better choices, the food would have been average It was not at the high level I have experienced previously here or at other Michelin star restaurants. There were some good courses but the whole package was not where it needs to be. The service was okay but again just adequate and seemed to lack experience. It was like the captain has left the ship and the crew were left to manage without guidance. The whole experience lacked the theatre and wow factor that it should have. This was a Saturday night and it was only half full.

A
Albert Cornelissen

We were pretty excited about dining here, and at the last minute decided to do the tasting menu, and I really wish we hadn't. Service was fine, the wine pairing was excellent, but the food was pretty average considering what you end up paying for two people. We definitely did not have a Michelin star experience, and reading some of the other reviews here I'm afraid this restuarant will probably lose its star soon.

First time visiting house of tides and will unfortunately be the last. Visited as a group of 4 as a celebration on a Friday night. We asked to have a drink downstairs first, there was absolutely no atmosphere downstairs and it was not a cosy or welcoming vibe. The waitress also told us the bar were unable to do two of the cocktails we asked for, despite a chilli margarita being a pretty standard drink these days. When we went upstairs we were not welcomed or asked if it was our first time dining at the restaurant etc. Simply “are you ready to order?” Which took us all by surprise as we had booked a tasting menu so didn’t think we would need to. It was explained that we could upgrade the main course and that’s what we could order, we were also informed that they didn’t have the main course of pheasant available and it would instead be pork. Quite disappointing that a Michelin stared restaurant didn’t have one of their main courses available on a Friday 7pm sitting. The food was presented well, but tasted average and didn’t feel ground breaking, service was alright but didn’t feel smooth or confident, certainly not Michelin level. There isn’t much atmosphere in the restaurant and the toilets give the vibe of a standard cafe and not a Michelin stared restaurant. We had made a note on the booking that the night was a celebration, there was a congratulatory card hidden at the back of our table, a nice touch, however there was spelling error which was just written over, you would think at a Michelin stared restaurant a new card would have been used instead. It’s a little thing, but you would expect better! The bill came to over £800 and everyone left absolutely starving, with cereal and toast required when we got home!! Overall a very, very expensive and disappointing visit. It’s a shame to leave a negative review but when prices are this high you do expect better.

Fancy food rather than fine dining. So incredibly disappointing. Off to a very bad start when 3 seperate staff approached our table to ask if we'd like to order. Another 2 came and asked if we wanted drinks! We ordered a drink and waited - and waited - finally the waitress appeared and went to the wrong table. Then wandered around and went back to the bar. We waited! Eventually with drinks the food came. We had the tasting menu - only it wasn't a tasting menu - a roast chicken dinner or steak (at an extra £50). The first few courses were tasty but nothing extraordinary. Then the Tatar and confit egg - well - a hard boiled egg! It was replaced with apologies but for this kind of money it just wasn't good enough. The evening was saved by Conor - the Irish waiter. Knowledgeable, funny and very good at his job. We were given a discount and a free drink. I would say we had a good time in spite of the place rather than because of it. Could not recommend it on any level. Apparently it had a Michelin Star - once... It's definitely slipped since then.

C
Chlo

We went to book this place and were pretty shocked that they require a £50 per person deposit. £100 is a lot of money to lose if one of us is sick or something comes up on the day. A £20 deposit is enough to incentivise people to show up. £50 is unreasonable and makes it not worth the risk. We've been to quite a lot of michelin star restaurants around the world, we go to them in London every year, and we've never seen anything near this high just to reserve a table. Not even in Mayfair. I can see why this restaurant had an unusually open calendar for the week of christmas
