Always the most amazing food and brilliant service at this little gem at the edge of the moors.
Excellent pub dinner with great menu and even better service by the staff. Well worth a visit.
Fabulous evening for my wife’s birthday. Staff were amazing, the whole place is lovely and welcoming We’ve been before and cannot wait to come again. Amazing value, cannot believe you can have this experience at this price point
Both myself and my dog were instantly made very welcome by all the ladies working today. I had the 2 course meal option on the Sunday lunch, very generous proportions and value for money. Service was great, very well attended to during the meal. Highly recommended and hopefully will visit again when I'm next holidaying in the area
Not long left the Eskdale after having the best fish and chips I have had in a long time, Served by a lovely young lady. Very attentive and a credit to the establishment. Thank you for making my short visit very pleasant indeed. Just had same again today1st August won't let me give new review. Everything just like last time excellent.
Stopped at the Eskdale for lunch while driving the moors. Was just looking for sandwiches, but told that they didn’t do sandwiches, but could offer a home made burger.(A burger is really a sandwich anyway!)Told that we could share. There was quite a lot! Delicious burger, and we’re not burger eaters.Offered coffee. Now I’m a coffee snob! I asked if they could make a proper Italian espresso.Told me they would do their best (can’t ask for more!) Espresso arrived, and it was superb! Truly worthy of an Italian caffe. The young lady who made it (sadly, didn’t get her name!) certainly knew her stuff! Service, food and ESPRESSO were all excellent! And a very friendly and comfortable place to stop and get fed and watered! Will definitely be back.Want to try the fine dining, stay overnight.
What a fantastic Inn. A warm hello on arrival set the scene and the great service continued for the whole evening. Add in some great food, a roaring woodturner and friendly staff and you have the formula for the perfect night out. If you are within driving distance of The Eskdale treat yourself. You will not be disappointed.
Had a really fantastic meal, although I am plant based diet, the menu was adapted to accommodate me, at no time did I feel I was a problem. The blackcurrant sorbet probably had more blackcurrants than Ribena. Great food, great service and really welcoming. Would recommend!
2nd visit and still as good, 1st class service and food. One of the best places we've visited in North Yorkshire. Staff are excellent, customer service clearly a priority and that's the same for dogs....greeted with a biscuit and made to feel important. Great choice of drinks to suit everyone. Food top notch, Sunday lunch amazing not just run of the mill. Wait for the Yorkshire pudding surprise....no spoilers!! Everything is just a bit more special with so much effort. Can't wait to return again and again and again...
Felt I had to leave a review…we were blown away by a wonderful ‘Till death do us part’ taster menu. Had an absolutely stunning evening…thank you to all at The Eskdale. It was our first trip here and we can’t wait to book a return visit! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted so warmly by all the staff and the whole place seemed to wrap itself around us. The menu was a treat - lots of courses and the right amount of food which was impeccably served with such attention to detail. The night was fully booked and it’s easy to see why…tasty food, friendly service & cosy atmosphere…I’m already checking the next events out! Thank you and see you soon!
What a lovely night we had at The Eskdale! Marcus and his team were incredibly welcoming and friendly, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The food was absolutely first class — delicious, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. Having recently moved to the area, we're so pleased to have found this gem. It’s safe to say The Eskdale will definitely become our new go-to spot. Looking forward to many more visits!
Hubby and I have passed The Eskdale many times but never ventured inside until last night and what a delightful surprise the meal was. The food was exceptional, the pork tenderloin was the best I have ever tasted, hubby said the same about his fish n chips. The pink peppercorn meringue was fabulous, one of the most amazing desserts I have experienced in our years of sampling resteraunts all over the world. The staff were wonderful, very attentive, and our spaniel was made very welcome (basically spoilt). The atmosphere was relaxed, friendly and comfortable. I would highly recommend this resteraunt and we will definitely return.
I’ve been lucky enough to eat in some of the best restaurants around the world and last night’s meal at The Eskdale is up there with the best of them. So much so that I returned tonight and had exactly the same thing. From the attentive but unobtrusive service from Kate and Lucy to the choice, quality and presentation of the food, it was all worthy of a Michelin star. Furthermore, it couldn’t have been more dog friendly and welcoming. I’m not the sort of person who leaves reviews, but I had to make this exception.
We came for our first visit last night, on recommendation from some friends. It was the valentines 'till death do us part' tasting menu and we absolutely loved it. I've never been made to feel so welcome before and when we decided last minute to get the wine pairing, the owner was kind enough to organise a taxi for us getting home. All staff were so friendly and we enjoyed the deadly descriptions of the courses! We will definitely be back! Thank you!
Me and my wife had the most fantastic first meal here tonight and we couldn't have asked for better service from Lucy and Marcus, the food was impeccable and we can't wait to try out the other options 😄 it was lovely to be informed upon leaving that if we were to have a dish in mind in the future, to ask for it a week in advance and they'll be able to accommodate which is fabulous! Keep up the great work ❤️ Holly & Nina x
Fantastic place - not only good food, I recommend the Pork in Serrano ham and the tea loaf, but good to see the new owners have put so much effort in to transforming the place. The pub as I remember it was very dated even 20 years ago but the decor is modern and we had such a lovely afternoon eating food by the fire with the dog that we went back for my birthday and had an amazing time. Thank you for putting up a birthday banner for me and after tasting my partners fish curry, I am ordering that next time. See you for Mother’s Day!
Great food and absolutly fantastic staff. Made you feel like part of the team. When we got to our table they had put up a happy birthday sign,as my wife had mentioned it when making the booking.
The staff is amazing, very warm, and super sweet. The food is delicious. I would definitely come back.
Great place to eat. The chef in this place must be a 5* Michelin. The way the food was served on the plate and the flavor of it was stunning to my partner and myself liking of course;) it was not overpriced. Two lovely ladies who served us were very helpful and accommodating to help with our daughter's meal as there is no kids specific food.
Wow. What a wonderful place. From start to finish amazing. Really friendly and helpful staff who made us feel very welcome. The food was fantastic. Every mouthful a flavour sensation which was presented to please the eye as well. Portions were just right. Enough to feel you've eaten a decent meal without being too big that you cannot make it through three courses. Which would be a real shame as every course is just as good as the last. The price is extremely reasonable too for such a high quality of menu. It's also dog friendly! We will definitely return. Return visit recently and still as good as ever. Love the food and atmosphere at the Eskdale.
This is one of the best pub restaurants around this area for a quality, fine dining experience. Food is absolutely divine, local ingredients, cooked and presented exquisitely, and perfect portion size. We were able to eat a three course meal comfortably without leaving any to waste and not feeling bloated. Simply the best.
I had a tough day cycling through this very pretty national park and at the end of the day I found this gem, giving me the most amazing food of my entire trip along the east coast of England served by some very nice owners. It was some sort of magic. Thank you so much for much for making my day ❤️ ... I will never forget.
Stunning food. What an absolute treasure of a pub. Had our second visit to the wonderful restaurant. Great menu, wonderful staff. The three of us had a 3 course meal and drinks. All of which were really good quality.
Fantastic gastro pub serving mouth watering food, really friendly staff and a lovely beer and wine selection. We booked at quite short notice for my birthday, but thankfully being midweek in January were welcomed with a gorgeous cosy table by the fire and had a wonderful meal for two. We ordered chicken livers, and French onion soup to start, then both ended up choosing the lamb shank for mains and shared a dessert…as we were absolutely stuffed but couldn’t turn down the amazing sounding Irish cream slice on the menu! The welcome we got and waiting staff were just lovely, beers were all perfectly poured and delicious, and the price was so reasonable for the fantastic quality of food and service. Would highly recommend if visiting the North Yorkshire coast & moors! We will be back!
Wife was looking around Google Maps for a good place to eat and she found the Eskdale Castleton with good ratings and dog friendly. Lovely reception on arrival with a good range of drinks, cask ales. keg lagers and ciders. Lovely decor and spotlessly clean, the food choice is perfect and the chefs in the open kitchen do a superb job with all courses being devoured with gusto! Very friendly and helpful young waitress ... well done to all staff and recommended !
We've dined here on a number of occasions and always enjoy the friendly & attentive service. We came back today for our wedding anniversary. The food is superb and presentation is exquisite. But the main bonus for us today was how lovely the staff were with our 4 month old puppy. Treats, individual water bowl and attention aplenty. Thanks so much for making her so welcome.
Googled ‘best pub/restaurant’ in North Yorkshire Moors - and found The Eskdale Castleton. Great menu and specials board - we had a fantastic meal. Excelent atmosphere and service.. looking forward to returning!
Our first visit to The Eskdale, and what an absolute delight. Lovely ambiance, friendly and welcoming staff, and the food was wonderful- yes, a little more than standard pub fare, but real value for money. The venison dish was fabulous, and the desserts were wonderful and inventive. Will be top of our list of places to eat the next time we’re in the area.
A wonderful evening spent here last week. This place delivers a particularly welcoming and relaxing experience. The hosts, waitress and kitchen staff are so friendly, but also very professional and knowledgeable about the food, ingredients and drinks. A bonus is how dog-friendly this place is. You can have a five star meal and mpeccable service with your dog ( or in our case dogs) under the table. What can be better! Thank you, we will be back around Easter.
What a fantastic restaurant, great feel, friendly staff and excellent food. We visited for an evening meal after seeing the reviews and noticing its mention in the Michelin guide, and these are well earned, as the food is superb, on par with Michelin stared restaurants I have been lucky enough to visit. The dishes are well thought out, the elements complement each other very well, the food is well presented and the options are enough to ensure they will give options to most palates. Prices are relatively cheaper than you would expect for food of this standard, with main dishes starting from about £15. The wine list has enough to ensure you can find a good accompaniment to any dish, with pairings if you choose the sample menu. The staff are attentive but not over powering, friendly and helpful, explaining the elements of the dishes they serve and happy to answer any questions. A wonderful experience from start to finish, I will be returning.
A perfect evening out! Cannot recommend enough. Visited on Friday night for a date night on the last night of our holiday in the area and it was the right choice. Food was superb, freshly made, delicious and the chef's went the extra mile to make sure we were happy. The staff were fantastic, attentive but not over bearing, chatty and fun. So rare to find a place with decent service anymore but The Eskdale is where other restaurant staff should work to learn how to do things properly! Book your table and thank me later.
Spent two wonderful evenings in the Eskdale. Whether you're going for high-end bistro special occasion or post hike muddy fish & and chips, you're in for a fabulous treat. It's worth every penny for the relaxed, welcoming Yorkshire hospitality & inclusive local community atmosphere. The best few evenings I've spent in a while 😀
There was nowhere to park in Whitby so we rushed in the car to Castleton. We arrived 10 minutes before they stopped serving and begged for a Sunday lunch. We were told that they only had 2 beef lunches left. We said perfect. Then they apologized that they had no tables. We said on the bar would be fine and they were okay with that. The food was amazing. I had no idea that I liked crispy kale. I'm not a fan of leeks but even the creamed leek was yum. Even though it was late the chef kindly stayed to make us dessert. A warm damson tart. Lots of locals were there and the staff knew them all by name. The chef even came out for a chat before heading home. It's obviously a very much loved community hub and it was a pleasure to be welcomed in by them all
Came for dinner on Friday night. Food and service was absolutely great! Only 1 vegetarian option available on the main courses, which was delicious but a little small, so would like to see another few options or specials. Just a bit of feedback.
Amazing place, beautiful scenery. Staff were friendly and professional, perfect table service. Had a 3 course meal, each dish was mouth watering and delicious. They looked awesome too. It's a unique place definitely worth a visit.
Absolutely fantastic meal last night at The Eskdale. We had the tasting menu and every course was superb with amazing flavours. We also opted for the wine flight which we would highly recommend. Service and ambience all excellent too. Booked again for a birthday celebration. Thanks to the team for a great evening
We drove past en route to our holiday cottage and googled it. Booked the following day and we’re not disappointed! Fabulous drinks menu and wine list. Food is outstanding, service friendly and relaxed whilst staying sharp and attentive. We would go again and again, just right for a special treat. Felt like Michelin quality food at a reasonable price in a friendly atmosphere.
Visiting from the USA. Had dinner here for my birthday with family! The food is amazing and the service is excellent. We all had different meals and all were delicious!
We had dinner here this week as part of our wedding anniversary trip to the area. We were given a very warm welcome and they mentioned the anniversary (which I'd put on the booking) which was a lovely touch. They had some amazing mocktails (we tried four of the five) and as a couple that do not drink it makes a big difference to have something beyond the typical soft drinks to have with our meal. The food was incredible. Innovative, and expertly cooked. We started with some lightly smoked mackerel and rare roast beef. For our main course, the most delicious duck and beetroot and BBQ cauliflower. The flavours were exquisite, distinct and delicate. The gravy in particular on the duck was so incredible we asked for bread so that we could mop up the flavour and make the best of it. For pudding, a delicious apricot crumble and vanilla ice cream. The warmth and attention from the team was superb, they looked after us but let us enjoy our meal and look our over the garden and countryside. Very highly recommended
Second visit this week, after a superb Sunday lunch, possibly the best I have had in a long time. We went back on my birthday and couldn't have chosen a better venue. Staff are very friendly and efficient, explaining each course. The outstanding cheese cake and velute are unique, so pleased we tried them. We are already planning on returning to North Yorkshire next year, due in part to the excellent food and drink in the area
Lovely welcoming place. Owner and staff were marvelous. The Food and drink were to a high standard. Will definitely be going again
Absolutely brilliant service and food. It's a hidden gem of the North Yorkshire Moors area. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Top class food and brilliant presentation but unpretentious.
Wonderful little pub/restaurant the food is just delicious and very beautifully presented. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable the proprietor very friendly and welcoming would definitely recommend a visit
We had a beautiful meal here! Absolutely delicious food, and made to feel so welcome by every member of staff. It’s evident they really care for this place and its patrons. We will be back next time we’re in the area!
Disclaimer: I had high expectations going in. Atmosphere was cosy. Service was friendly and attentive. Nice soft and non alcoholic selection available which I always appreciate. To start I had the mackerel. I enjoyed it although I found it a bit under seasoned. As a main we shared a bouillabaisse which was fab and the veggie burger. Although the burger was delicious with a bit of a kick to it. The burger bun and sourdough accompanying the other main course were not fresh which was disappointing. Deserts were yummy.
For me The Eskdale provided a service with a smile, an excellent choice of drinks, super friendly staff who couldn't do enough to make you feel welcome, and a menu that looked great. Unfortunately, although the starter and main were plated up nicely and the waitress gave a master chef delivery and explanation of the dish 😍, they lacked flavour/seasoning to have that wow factor as described in the menu. This being said....I would happily visit again and would love to sample the Sunday lunch 😁
The food and staff are very good but just let down by a few details that mean they fall short of a 5 star review. E.g. Ingredients (pickled shallots) missing from the dish served compared to the menu, not being told about the specials when ordering, no indication or mention on the menu of dairy ingredients in dishes (my partner is lactose intolerant).
We had a very enjoyable lunch . Two vegetarians who were very pleased with their choice, cooked to perfection. I had the pheasant with panceta, leeks etc all so delicious. Would recommend and certainly we will be back thank you . I thought the cost was ok also
I came here with some family for a birthday the staff were all lovely. The waitress came running to the car when we left a birthday card at the table 😊. Food was very nice my mum got the duck which she enjoyed a lot. I ordered the main vegetarian (no meat or fish) dish which was Thai noodles. The only negative I would say is they ran out of the only vegan dessert which was a little disappointing because I have lactose intolerance but the other ones my table ordered had gave good reviews. I have been again sitting in the back seating area which has beautiful decorating, the waiter was so sweet even got our dog a blanket and water bowl. They made me a vegan desert based on what they had which I appreciated.
Visited for a a valentine's meal. Generally a very nice place. Very good service however you would expect to have the same waitress in a setting like this however we did not. The drinks were of good quality. The food- the starters were lovely however my rabbit was bony and I had shot it in. Can't be helped! Mains- the pearl barley risotto I had needed seasoning I found but it was presented well. My partners fish and chips- the fish was very crispy and overcooked and the chips were chewy. Desserts- we had the Banana souffle which tasted great however I did send mine back as there was hairs inside of it to which it was taken off the bill. All in all I would definitely return but perhaps just for drinks.
Out for a drive so stopped here for Sunday lunch. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Our belly pork starter was very tasty but we were a bit disappointed with the main we thought the roast potatoes were a bit hard I wondered if they had been warmed up I apologise if I'm wrong. And it's the first time I've had a Sunday lunch with one slice of meat having said that it was very tender. So just a couple of negatives really
A good eatery, but left feeling disappointed about the bread. The good points first, fresh and seasonal menu, amazing waiting staff, well presented tasty food, really really good desserts. Onto the issues…. While the restaurant is clean and comfortable it doesn’t feel as premium as the food. My main issue was with the bread however. I ordered the bean burger and it arrived with stale bread. As a baker I look forward to the bread and this bap was at least 3 days old and should never be served. When our server asked about the food, I said it was delicious but was very disappointed with the bread (that I didn’t eat). She said she’d speak to the kitchen, but then never provided any feedback. When speaking to the owner at the end he dismissed this by saying it was because they toasted it. This is not ok, do not gaslight your customers! The sourdough bread for the bouillabaisse was also very stale. A good restaurant knows when not to serve food and change a menu, and it is never a good idea to gaslight your customers. Overall this left us a bit annoyed. I personally don’t think this restaurant lives up to the hype, but it was still a very nice meal. I wouldn’t return however, or recommend.
The staff are warm and welcoming and the place is well presented. Unfortunately paying £21 for a burger that is advertised with triple cooked chips was disappointing :( I find it hard to believe they were triple cooked as they should have been light and fluffy in the centre and they were not. I left most of mine. It was the only item on the small menu i was able to order :( I would not revisit as I believe there are plenty of other establishments that offer better value for money and proper triple cooked chips.
