One of my favorite tacos, 5 tacos, ohpps I meant stars. So my experience has been very fulfilling (no pun intended), allow me to explain: on any visit in the late spring or summer you can enjoy the California Dream... Tasty waves, tasty babes... Wait what the heck this is the future so let's behave and be all proper for the pictures... So Whittier Blvd was this American Graffiti revolution that was the equivalent of social media and it had something to do with connection or finding the " FOODIE OR FOODY " place, and I suppose it was cooking a good meal that was very important? This place really works on their recipe, my only complaint is source, because there is no longer a local butcher shops or bakers near by... HOWEVER!!! these guys find a way to make a really good meal with what the distributors provide as frozen. Anyone would say, if you can make it better, make it yourself, share the recipe or open your own restaurant. Enjoy these wonderful establishments, and tomorrow will be another day, these are the good'ol days
Wow! If you haven't tried this "cash only" ATM inside Mexican food location, get in your car and drive there now. Great food, good size portions, reasonable prices and PUFFY TACOS! What more could you want?
What can I say about Puffy Taco? What a variation on a typical taco, I always get the crispy dogs as a side there so good with the cheese in the middle. Worth a try.
Only been here once. A tad bit pricey, but worth every penny and the portions are huge. The Puffy Taco is pretty damn good, but next time I'll ask for them a little more well done. Conclusion: this place is an icon of the city for a reason. Go find out why.
Them Puffy Tacos hit the spot every time!
The puffy chicken taco is incredible. Pro tip, if you are getting the tacos to go, get the sauce on the side so it won't get too soggy on the drive. Also, remember this is cash only!
Best tscos anywhere. Bring cash as no debit/cc is accepted.
Sooo good just remember to bring my ash
Totally love the puffy tacos, very tasty. Service was quick and friendly. Associates are always welcoming and upbeat. Love this place
I ranking for a pretty good Texas style fried tortilla “Puffy” taco. It’s a local Legend, and it’s unique in the world of taco joints. I enjoy them and if you get a chance try it out no-frills I like eating outside on the bench. Everyone is very nice.
Even with all this covid stuff going you can still count on puffy taco I was there today and got my usual one asada puffy taco and one bean and cheese burrito with hot sauce and like usual it was delicious I've been a customer for over 20 years and hopefully another 20 more nice job guys
Love them. I have not had puffy tacos anywhere else so I have nothing to compare them to, so to me, they are the best! Make sure to bring cash as they do not accept cards. The taco shells is light and fluffy, but the bottom does get soggy and falls apart, especially if you take them to go. I love the ground beef tacos, they are now all I order. The pricing for the plates I think are very reasonable for the amount of food you get. Highly recommend giving them a try.
This place is a gem of a find. Went here on a friend's recommendation and I'm so glad we did! These tacos were amazing, the quesadillas and burritos are all so good. Cash only but totally worth it. I wish I had one where I lived! I'd definitely come back here! Service was fast too.
Five stars all around. Combination burrito was HUGE and delicious. It's cheaper eating here then it is at McDonald's. You get your money's worth. Service was fast. I'm definitely going here again.
WOW!!! My first time trying this place and my chicken puffy taco meal was absolutely delicious!!! The chicken was juicy and perfectly seasoned, light and crispy shell, yummy beans and rice on the side with chips and all the accompaniments. VERY reasonable prices too! I actually finished my meal before my fiancé for the first time ever! I'll DEFINITELY be back!
A must-have if you're in the city of Whittier. A local loved favorite with an excellent owner and family that run it. No wrong answer on the menu. Everything is fantastic!
I heard about this place so I decided to give this puffy tacos a try. The tacos where nice and crunchy and thier salsa was awsome after all for me a taco is not a taco with out some good salsa. I would come back for some more. Yes I would recommend this place if you are looking for some good crunchy tacos.
The Food is delicious. Meat seasoned well. Service is impeccable. Always a treat to eat here.
I heard good things about this place, and they are all true!!! Tried the ground beef puffy tacos with green( spicy)salsa. Nicely seasoned and definitely amazing! We will definitely go back and explore the menu and of course... more puffy tacos! All the crew was very friendly, thanks again!
Always a good time to go to puffys for a taco 🌮 great place
First time here tonight with my son Lucas. He’s picky and he loved the tacos. I got a burrito de asada and tacos. Great place!!
Love this place, great tacos..if you never had a puffy taco..this is the place for that.
Delicious! Carnitas Puffy is my favorite! Cash Only.
I love Puffy Taco and have been eating it since 1996. I don't even live in orange county anymore. I moved to the inland empire in 2007 and I still make the time to come out to puffy Taco and eat their food that I love the taste of. My families go to food we order is the Puffy Tacos ground beef with pico de Gallo and the french fries with avocado sauce and cheese. My son also likes the Puffy Taco Plate, comes with 2 tacos, refried beans and rice with strips. OMG it's so yummy 😋. We also love the staff there and the cooks. A big thumbs up to you guys. That staff is always so nice Art junior is always so welcoming and remembers us every time. I was pregnant with my kids eating this food before lamaze class. My oldest is 25 and this is is ultimate favorite.! This places makes us emotional that's how much we love it.👍
My fiance grew up around here and in the past 10 years I can't count how many times I've heard about puffy taco!!he can go on and on about them so of course i had to try my self ! And I don't like to acknowledge much when he is right .....but he was definitely right about them being good. I can see why he always ends up wanting puffy taco when we go back and visit ! Glad he knew about this place ♥️ we get it every other time we visit great customer service as well ♥️
Worked in LaHabra for years. Ate lunch at Puffy Taco fairly often. Can't beat a carne asada "puffy" anywhere! Moved to Texas 7 years ago. Have returned to SoCal a couple of times and Puffy is ALWAYS on the agenda. Our visit last week was a bit disappointing as it seemed the recipe for the Puffy Taco had been changed! It seemed thicker and "breadier". DON'T MESS WITH THIS TOTAL WINNER! We love it completely as it was! We'll try again when we make our way back another time.
Puffy ground beef tacos everything on them green sauce to go.
The ground beef taco meat is sassy with all the right chilies. Probably not for the mild people. Had a perfectly crunchy poofy shell as advertised, lettuce and shredded, orange cheese. All good. Beans are homemade. Rice is spicy too. Green salsa was better. Fair prices. Cash only though. Happy Cinco de Mayo.
I seriously drove, seems like FOREVER to get here in 90 degree weather, low tire pressure, and a burning smell coming from my engine. When I tell you it was SO WORTH IT 😋 OMG I have been looking for this taste for so long. Even the salsa had my mouth watering. It took me about an hour to get home, and even though my food was not hot, it was the most absolute perfect Mexican meal I've ever had. The chicken puffy tacos ( YES)!!!! The taquitos Mmmmm!!! And of course the Ranchero burrito is finger licking yum yum. I sure wish you were open tomorrow. But don't worry I will be back during the week. Lol Tacos places in Los Angeles have NOTHING on Arturo's 😭 I can't wait to try more. Thank you 🤗❤️
The signature PUFFY TACO is outstanding. The owners are very nice. I moved too far to just roll in once a week like old times
This place is a childhood favorite from back when they were located in La Habra on Imperial Blvd over 40yrs ago. We now live out in Riverside but still make the drive about every month or so for the 1 of a kind Puffy Tacos. There’s nothing like them with all their overfilled goodness. Only 2 locations exist, so you got to try this one unless you want to travel to Texas. Hopefully we’ll make it out there someday to try their location with the Cantina!!
This is tex-mex at its best, folks, and it feels oh so good going down. Grab the two puffy taco combo (they recommend the Guizada and the Picadillo, and they ain't wrong), and be sure to wash it down with their homemade lemonade, you can thank me later. Besides, how often do you have the opportunity to use the word puffy when ordering food! Now go on now, ya hear IG: kay_okay_eat
Both people at the location were very friendly to me and every person that went up to the counter; even in the hot weather 92*F, they took my order with a smile and even chat with customers that came up to pickup their orders. Only been twice and both times were pleasant. Just a heads-up it's Cash only, worth the trip for puffed tacos! 2x Carne asada, 2x Carnitas, take-out, and had it with (from my fridge) cool crisp hard aple cider and gingerale at home. *sip* Ahhh.
I used to get puffy tacos here every time, because they are so delicious. Any meat filling is delicious as far as I can tell you! Always made with fresh ingredients and garnishes. I was just there and realized that I never ordered a burrito from there! So,I ordered a beef and beans combination burrito! And it was delicious! The chunky beef was cooked home style, tender and moist and the beans are slow cooked the traditional way. Quality cheeses you can taste! Just the right amount of sauteed onions with cilantro salsa inside too! Enough talk about it; just go there if you've never been, and try those puffy tacos. Then you will want to try the other menu items! I am going back to try other delicious food items, soon! Friendly service and relaxing atmosphere.
The guizada and chicken puffy tacos were my favorite because the meat was juicy and flavorful. The carne asada was cooked to the point of being charred and crunchy. It was also a little under seasoned. The chips and salsa were not good for takeout because they pour the salsa on the chips and it ends up soggy.
Arturo's Puffy Tacos live up to the legend. The chips, rice, and beans are great too. When I was taking an outside photo another customer walked out. I excused myself and commented about how much I enjoyed the place. She said "Me too, and the guy working the counter is the nicest guy in the world." She pretty much summed up the hospitality and feeling at Arturos. The property is classic burger stand architecture, nothing glamorous, but it's clean, fun, and the only place west of the Pecos serving authentic Puffy Tacos. Google it!
Awesome food lots of seating inside and outside staff is very friendly John Lopez has done a great job with the restaurants
Came here on a LA taco tour, I didn't find too many puffy taco places just this one. Thank God I did. These are THE BEST crunchyish "white people" taco out here. The meat is actually seasoned, the produce is fresh, the sauce is bright and flavorful, and the crunch of those shell and even the taquito shell was amazing. I will be returning every time I'm in LA
Saw this place on social media and I had to try the Puffy Tacos. I drove up from San Diego and only ordered 2 tacos. I ordered a carne asada taco and ground beef taco. I really like the consistency of the shell, it was like a chalupa texture and tasted like Indian Fry bread. I've been looking for something like that for quite a while and that was really the closest place from San Diego. The total price was around $7, we also ate the tacos on the tables outside.
It's been a while since I had but I was not disappointed on them being still so delicious. The crunch from the taco and all the popping flavors from the ground beef cheese lettuce tomatoes and salsa just explodes in your mouth. It's so easy to put these down and go through a whole to go box just by yourself.
In the area for the week (Thanksgiving week) and if you know Whittier then, you know the city offers really great Mexican food. While browsing online, I stumbled upon Arturo’s. It immediately brought me back to San Antonio, Texas where puffy tacos originated, OOoooo Tex-Mex! I fell in love with the original Rays Drive Inn and have been wanting to recreate these… meh just the thought of how much oil I would have to waste.. Thankfully Arturos came in clutch! Arrived just before the noon rush, the restaurant offers outdoor and indoor dinning. When you arrive the menu is there clear as day, decide what you want, order from the window (CASH ONLY), wait for your ticket to be called. Got the (All puffy shell) Carne Asada – 4/5 I love carne asada in general but this one lacked flavor and was a bit chewy Guisada – 5/5 pork stew, delicious! Chicken – 5/5 shredded, flavorful, would order again in a heart beat Original – 5/5 picadillo well-seasoned Fries – 5/5 Yes, came out hot and crispy I planned on ordering side of green salsa but changed my mind last min, the taco had everything in it, cheese, lettuce, salsa. Give them a try! Great Service! Outdoor seating! Dog friendly!
During a recent trip to LA, i had the distinct pleasure of meeting the staff and also eating at this landmark restaurant. I can say hands down delicious tacos but for certain the best cheese and bean burrito i have ever eaten. Food- Excellent. Simple Mexican food done with years of mastery and passion. The namesake Puffy taco , comes in a fried crispy tortilla , packed full of carne or pollo. Delicious slow cooked chicken or rich beef. Large portions as well: The stand out to me however was that burrito , and after talking to the staff it made sense. Slow cooked beans , stirred together with the melted fat of all that delicious beef!! Outstanding. Service- Staff were fast and couldn’t have been friendlier. I had a chance to talks with them and learn about this restaurant and its rich heritage in the area. Warm and welcoming. Value- I mean it’s LA but this was by far one of the cheaper eats i had. Well worth the money. Go/No Go—- GOOOOOO!!! Can’t wait to get back there.
Arturo’s Puffy Tacos are absolutely delicious! The tacos are perfectly crispy on the outside while remaining soft and fluffy inside, creating the perfect texture with every bite. The fillings are fresh, flavorful, and generously portioned, making each taco satisfying and memorable. The staff is friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall great experience. If you’re looking for a tasty, authentic taco experience, Arturo’s is definitely the place to go.
Very unique tacos - light and tasty! Tried a few different ones but the original beef was my favorite. Very friendly owners who are proud of their long history! Definitely worth a try if you haven't been yet.
This place is a staple in the community. The food is good, the employees are friendly and its always a good choice when craving something crunchy! The puffy tacos are so good. We usually spend about $45 between me and my bf. I think this is reasonable since we order a few items. If you have some cash on you, stop by! And if you dont but have a debit card they have a ATM inside!
California’s only puffy taco spot and a fun piece of Tex-Mex history. The puffy taco is more of a novelty than a standout—it tastes just like the shell of a taco salad, with the same texture and flavor. The taco plate is the real winner here. For $13, you get two puffy tacos, rice, beans, and chips—a hearty meal and a great value compared to ordering tacos individually. Tips: *Cash only!! *Plenty of parking *Indoor counter seating and outdoor tables available *Quick, friendly service makes it an easy stop for lunch Worth visiting once to experience California’s only puffy taco and grab a filling plate without breaking the bank.
The absolute BEST tacos i’ve ever had in my life!! I’ve never heard of a puffy taco before coming here & my expectations were blown away! I visit my boyfriend often in California & we come here at least twice while i’m visiting. If you’re ever in the area check it out you won’t be disappointed! Prices are very reasonable as well. Great customer service from everyone working there!

Okay the shell on the taco was totally awesome but lack of flavor on the meats. The salsa also didn't have flavor. We got the red mild. My wife got the steak and she said it was a little tough. I got the carnitas and it could have been more flavorful we drove from Covina and it's not a place where we where? Oh yeah let's go back sorry
After all the great reviews I had to try it again since I haven't eaten here in years thought maybe it wasn't lacking flavor like I remembered it to be as a young girl but unfortunately my memory served me correctly it had no flavor I ended up throwing away 15.00 in food because I just couldn't eat it. I won't even talk about how unwilling they were to make any changes to the tacos to meet my dietary needs nor the filth at the ordering window. Sad because I had such high hopes had anticipated eatting here for weeks before I finally had the time to go in just to be terribly let down. Sad that they claim to be authentic and the best because I definitely don't feel the same way.
I've been wanting to try this place for a while now, but I just never got to it until now. The atmosphere is whatever. There are a few seats and tables to eat, but most people were getting to go orders. The food was surprisingly good, not the best, but after a few beers, the food will most definitely hit the spot. My favorite was the puffy taco with picadillo (ground beef). Ask for extra red salsa on the side; it's not spicy.
1st time here. Saw it on TV and we wanted to check it out. The lady that took our order (the owner I think) was incredibly nice. She suggested the 2 ground beef taco plate. We had that, and it was good. The place is cash only, and looks like it hasn't had any kind of an update since 1980! The parking is a little challenging, the share a parking lot with U-Haul
Cash only and closed Sunday. Try anything puffy. It’s delicious! Lunch for 2 costs about $30
Wanted to try for over a year finally made the 30 minute street drive from Anaheim Hills. No easy way to get here. Got my tacos to go due to the wife agreeing to drive with me even though she was not hungry, so my food was not as good as if I was there eating it fresh and hot. So I will make a second run for a better review. Overall I liked the puffy taco and the taquitos. I like the cheddar cheese all over everything. The salsa was ok not my favorite.
Great place for a taco. Food taste fresh and flavorful. The server/owner is very friendly and great service. I will definitely go back for another taco at this place.
Been.going here since the 80s. Don't know how they get the taco shells to puffy up and be so crunchy, but so good. Good beef and chicken tacos are delicious.
Not many parking spaces so we had to park around the block on a neighborhood street. Ordered, then saw their sign that said "cash only". Lucky I had enough cash on me. There is some indoor seating but there were at least 1/2 dozen tables outside so people like me can bring our pets:) The food was great, the puffy tacos, beans, rice and salsas, but my tacos had split on the bottom so it was like a messy taco sandwich! I would definitely go back because the staff is friendly and the green salsa was so tasty, reasonable prices, and I search out places where I don't have to leave my dog at home:) Make this place a chain!
Cash Only. Plan ahead or use their ATM inside. This is a local fixture with much the following. We have e lived here 20 years and this is our second visit. Flavors are good. Wifey had carnitas taco and I had picadillo (ground beef). We had the order to go because we are a mile away. Hate to report the puffy taco shell gets a little soft after a ride home. Fries are good as are the taquitos. The green salsa is phenomenal. Over solid tastes good service and a local icon definitely worth a visit, but for us it’s not going to be a monthly thing.
It was good but nothing spectacular. Not something I'm going to crave again soon. It was good quality and I'd eat their bean and cheese burrito again but I don't think the puffy taco was my jam. I can see how others might feel it was life changing. I did not but don't let it stop you from giving them a shot. The quality was top tier!
Gotta try the Puffy Tacos! They come out hot in temperature and fresh as can be. I recommend getting the Strips Texanas (chips with blended guac, cheese and salsa) to accompany the meal. Plus you can use the strips to pick up the droppings from these messy tacos. Make sure to bring cash! This is a CASH ONLY establishment. I recommend a minimum of $10 per person. I drove an hour to try this Southern California treat, well worth the LA traffic.

We ordered our usual, regular ground beef tacos and noticed they were not like before. The ground beef looked and tasted like lower quality meat. The price per taco is almost 5 bucks. Not worth it.
One of the best tex-Mex food, the service was good and the employees were friendly, they do not travel well, the ambiance was not that good but thats because it's next to the main road.
The food is good very tasty. I just noticed that lately. The puffy tacos have been extremely soggy. The service is always pleasant. The ambience is just an old.

I had heard SO many good things about this place. Tacos were just OK. My Bean and Cheese was horrible. Fries were some of the worst Fries I've had. The only really good thing was the Quesadilla (but then again, can you even mess up a Quesadilla?). As the kids say, this place is "Mid". We won't ve returning. If we want legit Mexican tacos we'd probably just go to a place like Chemas (which is also less expensive)
Maybe we overhyped it or maybe it was the 30 minute drive for us both ways but it didn't live up to our expectations on those great social media pics. It was definitely good and unique. If we're in the area I might stop by again. The meats were dry but still had good taste. The Mexican plate was good but nothing that stood out. Inside the restaurant was as cold as a refrigerator and it was warmer outside at 65 degrees. Outside tables were dirty.
My first time here so I wanted to try the puffy taco& Mexican hot dog ,overall ok 👍 I gave service 2 stars because this young guy cashier, I ask him for a plate because I was going to eat in my car ,hes like oh we dont have any, ill give u a box.. when I go to the pick up window a friendly lady handing me the food & I see a stack of paper plates ,so.i ask him can I have a plate, he gives me another little box . Then im just their & I believe he was thinking out loud. & I heard him say " that's wierd" . So I dont care what he means ,probably not even for me, but I heard him right after he handed me a box. So next time just give the customer a darn plate! 2 stars buddy instead of 5
Different not like a mexicam taco truck . More tex flavor
This cash-only walk-up restaurant in Whittier is just one of two places I could find in Southern California that serve "Puffy Tacos," a Tex-Mex taco derivative that is popular in San Antonio, TX. The secret behind the tortilla in the "Puffy Taco" is that a corn tortilla is deep-fried for a very brief time so that it puffs up from air attempting to escape the masa, thus creating large air pockets, making the tortilla "puffy." Once the tortilla is "puffed," it is removed immediately from the fryer, then quickly stuffed like a normal taco and served. During my visit, I explored two filling options: ground beef with large chunks of potatoes (aka picadillo) and stewed cubes of beef (aka carne guisado). Lettuce and shredded cheese are heaped on top along with a mild-medium "hot sauce" (in Tex-Mex parlance). Both beef-based fillings were heavily spiked with chili powder and are heartier and denser than the Mexican food we are typically served in Southern California. Due to the grease from the meats mixing with the oil from the fryer, I found these tacos to be a bit heavy in runny fat for my liking.
burrito, puffy tacos and crispy dogs... got home and no salsa or no quack salsa... that's what make it even better
