The food was amazing here! We had a fantastic meal with my family and they booked us in at late notice on a bank holiday. They catered for our 6 year old amazingly and she loved the food. We especially loved the salmon starter and the scallops! Thank you so much, and we will definitely be back!
I love visiting The Black Horse and am constantly impressed with their high quality of food. My first visit, I went in expecting a normal old British pub with some good grub. I couldn't have been more wrong. The Black Horse is beautiful, offering a fabulous classy experience. It is gorgeously decorated, has such a warm group of staff and food that will exceed expectations.
Fantastic pub. Went for lunch and it was delicious. Proper tasty pub food. Restaurant quality. Great service from the outset. Definitely book as it gets busy. We had the ciabatta for a starter between four just as a precursor to the mains. Then we had shepherds pie, steak and ale pie, duck leg and the cod. Everyone loved their respective dishes. I had the duck and the skin was crispy and tasty. We also had truffle mac and cheese to share and it was so yummy. Definitely recommend this pub if you’re in Woburn. I would go again!
Had a lovely lunch here, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, all four meals were delicious!
Louise my friend says the chips were 10/10 . I reckon they were 7.5 pretty good chips 🙂
We had a great experience at The Black Horse today, visiting for lunch before a trip to the nearby Safari Park, for my son's 2nd birthday. Beautiful pub and delicious food. Well labelled for gluten free and kindly gave my son a cake with a candle which he loved. The staff, in particular Andrew, were really attentive and really understanding, giving my son crayons and paper, and making me a starter despite it not currently being on the menu. Thank you, next time we visit Woburn we will be back.
We popped in after a walk over the deer park on Boxing Day, the staff are really welcoming and make you feel like a valued customer. There’s plenty of choices for food and drinks and lots of comfortable places to sit or stand. Our favourite pub in Woburn by a mile!
Great lunch with friends here. Lovely staff, prompt, attentive funny and professional. Food arrived quickly and was really good. We'll definitely be back.
We went here to celebrate my friends birthday. The team were friendly and went above and beyond to make her feel special. The atmosphere was lovely, the service was great and the roast dinner was even better. Highly recommend for a freshly cooked roast dinner!
Generous pub : shared a Sunday roast there (yes apparently this this half of a full portion in this plate). Also nice staff and cute outfoor "secret garden". Would recommend
Didn't take pics of our food..it was a birthday dinner! But this is one of those gems that people brag about finding and MANY lesser establishments pretend to be. The real thing.. a gastronomic delight! Seriously good, unpretentious and while at the upper end price wise, is astonishing value for money. Also has proper veggie, vegan and gluten free options that are not tokenism but read tasty enough to tempt a carnivore! I had a pork chop that was served on a totally awesome compote of butter beans, bacon and courgette that was creamy and a bit reminiscent of stroganoff! And had crackling frags on top! MeJulie had a steak and ale pie, her chum a Dover Sole. It was delicious. I had the three cheese selection for afterwards. British and damn high quality, they were truly excellent. Julie was not as impressed by the rhubarb trifle...and after finishing it for her(!) both felt it needed a tangy something and was a bit bland. Katie who served us, was a star and clearly cares about and is proud of the establishment she works for. Just gorgeous food and lovely atmosphere. If you are not going out as much, THIS place is worthy of your new austerity entertainment budget! Loved it
Nice food and good vibes dinner here. Have indoor and outdoor space
Nice pub with a good selection of beers and large beer garden with plenty of seating.
Good beer and nice coffee, nice touch little bow of smarties with coffee!. Gent's toilets all good and clean, but could do with a refresh /makeover.
Food was lovely, best steak and ale pie Ive ever had. Welcoming and kind staff. Cosy atmosphere
My favourite restaurant in MK. Was treated well by the staff as we went for our anniversary. Thank you for making it so special
Went for anniversary and one of our first outings for a while and we were not disappointed. Used to come here a lot until we moved abroad but we have returned!!
Christmas Dinner Food, service and atmosphere was very good Good choices of ales and lager
Had a really yummy meal with great food choices! Will be going back for sure
I have been visiting this pub for over 30 years and always have good service and the craic with the staff. The food is always of high standard and the smell of food is always luring me to eat. Tonight I had a lovely burger and a Guinness, well more than one Guinness. Thanks guys and gals who took care of me.
A truly delightful pub experience! The Black Horse in Woburn is a gem. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The pub itself is beautifully maintained, with charming rustic features and a cozy ambiance. The service was exceptional. The staff were friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about their work. They were knowledgeable about the menu and offered excellent recommendations. The food was absolutely delicious. The quality of the ingredients was evident in every bite, and the dishes were beautifully presented. The Black Horse is the perfect spot for a relaxed and enjoyable meal. Whether you're looking for a casual lunch or a more formal dinner, you won't be disappointed. Highly recommended.
The food here was great, I had the 10oz Ribeye steak which was aged and cooked to perfection...accompanied with seasonal vegetables and Isle of Wight tomatoes. My wife had the buckwheat salad and thought it was fresh and nicely prepared
Proper nice pub, especially the 2 meals for £25……service excellent & food & drink outstanding.
We had a large company function and needed a restaurant that could accommodate circa 45 seats. The Black Horse was recommended to me and so I reached out to them. From first engagement, it was a pleasure to deal with people who had a can do attitude and were happy to help. Due to the size of our party, we were understandably asked to do pre-orders. We all went for a two course menu and were given the option of starters/main or main/dessert. All pre-orders were submitted, however there were a lot of amendments right up until the evening prior to our booking which were accommodated for. On the evening, we received a warm welcome and were shown to our tables. The staff were attentive throughout our evening by offering table service. All of the meals were brought out in a timely fashion and were enjoyed by all. I would definitely recommend The Black Horse and would have no hesitation visiting them again. Massive thanks to Maria and her team!
What a lovely, well run place. We booked in for Sunday lunch and when we arrived were served promptly with a great selection of drinks. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. Portions were very generous and the lamb roast on the specials was outstanding. Couldn't fault anything.
Have had a great experience at The Black Horse on multiple occasions over multiple years. Visited back in 2019 and the food was awesome, couldn’t find a fault with it. Returned in 2024 and have found only improvements on something that I thought wasn’t possible. It’s great to see loyalty within the team with Adam still there and preparing food.
Food was excellent! I however cannot rate the overall comfort. The staff were very attentive but could not make up for the very poor spacing of tables in the limited space. We went on a Saturday night in November and expected it to be busy, but I've never been so close to strangers at another table before!!! I would just kindly ask to think of customers comfort before shoving in tables with limited space.
Been going here for many years but the food has never been better. All of the staff were friendly and polite on my last visit (Sunday 5.6.21) and the food was ridiculously good. i had Asparagus with poached egg to start. ALMOST perfect, as the spears were cooked to perfection, the Béarnaise was spot on, but the egg was just ever so slightly 'snotty', literally (i don't use that word often or willy-nilly) needing 10 more seconds 'in the bath'. A delight. The Roast Pork Sunday roast with all the trimmings was... Exceptional. The pork juicy and tender, the roasties crispy outside but fluffy inside, the Cauliflower Cheese a triumph and the home-made pork stuffing patties possibly (probably) the finest i've ever eaten. Not being a regular meat eater (BUT i'M NOT A VEGETARIAN 😡 - that's for those who feel the obsessive need to label everyone/everything!!) i thought i'd treat myself today and i dont regret it for a moment. If only all meat were as locally sourced and of such high quality as this, i'm sure i'd be more inclined to eat it more regularly. The pork crackling was some of the best you will find anywhere with just enough crispiness balanced with a salty melt in the mouth flavour of the fat.. Just Wow. The pudding was equally sensational, a chocolate fondant cake with melted middle and a dollop of honeycomb ice-cream (a recommendation by one of the lovely staff) finished it all off to perfection. The meal was not cheap but everything was so good (including the drinks, the service etc.) that, as a special treat, it will be hard to beat. Long may this continue. Thoroughly recommended. 8/10 UPDATE 19.6.22 Almost a year since my initial review and just had to add that when the great CHARLOTTE is managing the pub it runs at it's best. Had a couple of underwhelming feeds in the time since my first review which i resisted updating because i felt it fair to give them a chance to improve - everyone has a bad day, or two, right?.. When Charlotte is running the show i feel the place runs as smoothly as it ever has. Made us feel extremely content and comfortable on a friends birthday today for which i wanted to say Thank You.
Nearly 5 star - I recently was in Milton Keynes with some friends and decided to head out of town to grab Sunday dinner. The property is beautiful giving you a real “countryside” feel. There seemed to be plenty of staff and not many customers. So we were looking forward to a steady service. Sadly the service was rather lack lustre, all staff were very polite but seemed to be very distracted which was a shame. It did allow myself and friends to have a good catch up, plus the food was excellent!
The value and options of the early week deals is great, at full price they would be dear though. Over 20 minutes to have soup served is very slow and the table next to us got their soup before us but ordered after us. Waitresses were very peasant but a few little mistakes.
Had the steak burger which was delicious. Friendly staff. Only issue was we had a very noisy large table next to us, to the point we could barely hear each other
We just popped in for a drink. It was all very friendly, and we are thinking about going back for a meal.
We hadnt intented to stay, just see what the menu was like for future reference as my sister had moved into the area. Had a very friendly welcome from the bar lady so we decided to stay and eat. Lots of seating front. We were 2 people but placed to sit at the back/middle section. It made me wonder why? I had my suspicions but I let it go this time. The meal was great especially the gnocchi lots of flavour, pinot gricio wine was okay. Creme brulee was also great and my niece had the vegetarian cottage pie, also very nice. We had to wait a while for the food but it was tasty, so worth the wait. Waitress was lovely in fact they were all quite attentive; so nice service. Toilets could be nicer, seems a bit drab, seats not fitted properly, stained seal around the sink but relatively clean. We arrived late afternoon but by 6:30pm it was filling up fast and became a bit noisy. A nice atmosphere but it was time for us to go. I will go back again for the food mainly.
Had one really great experience, good food and service at a decent price and one below par eating experience - various ingredients missing without us being informed and the food arriving cold plus a sticky table where the wax finish is giving up the ghost. So - an average of 5 stars and 1 star = 3 stars. Last visit was just for coffee and all OK...
Decided on Sunday lunch here as reviews were good and pub looked really nice when we called in. We both ordered roasts. Parsnips were very pale and not very tasty and Yorkshire puddings were overcooked on the edges and very greasy. Our waitress apologised and said they looked different to usual. After paying our bill I went to the ladies toilet and it was grubby. I could smell urine, the pipes by the toilet were dirty and there were quite a few cobwebs. The radiator was damaged and looked ancient. My friend went to the gents toilet and the hand drier wasn't working. We spoke to a manager who said they recently had a new chef and was aware the toilets needed a refurbishment. This didn't excuse the amount of dust and dirty looking pipework. The pub itself looked so inviting but the reality was disappointing.
What here for our teams Christmas dinner Lovely venue with good atmosphere Staff very friendly and service good The thing that let them down was the food Started off great, the start was brilliant but unfortunately went down hill from there The Christmas dinner was adequate, turkey was dry, mini sausages were anemic and looked think they had not been cooked My biggest disappointment was desert. Had Christmas pudding, not what I was expecting see photo
Starters were over cooked scallops with a tasteless cauliflower puree, followed by a steak that was more fat and connective tissue than it was meat, standard frozen chips, packet peppercorn sauce and far too much green (even the waitress passed comment on that!) I have a photos of the crème brulee but it doesn't do it justice, it was cold inside and the 'brulee' top which I sent back and was given a replacement marginally better, with stale shortbread biscuits and no bright maybe berry sauce or something to liven up the dull looking plate the only good thing I could say about the meal was that I was alone so nobody to be disappointed with. The seating for a single diner was the best either, stuck in a corner next to the fire door with a view of the kitchen door and ladies toilets. I have had bar far better meals locally and for alot less money. Sadly disappointed
Had a roast at 3pm on a Sunday so was fairly quiet ( around 7 tables having food) and the service was shockingly slow, was 20 minutes before anyone asked us if we wanted a drink, wasn’t shown the specials and the roast beef was so over cooked it was black on the edges. Very average unfortunately and others had already been overheard complaining. Wouldn’t recommend
This place used to be packed at weekend lunchtimes, but last Saturday lunchtime there were only six tables in use at 1pm. The quality of the food has dropped, as has the service. We waited 20 minutes before someone took our order even though we were the only table waiting to order, then waited 1/2 hour for the food. The pub might blame Covid and cost of living issues, but that shouldn’t be the case as this used to be a destination pub. The only things that haven’t changed is the loud banter behind the bar and the prices - probably the second most expensive in the area after Paris House.
Every time I go here I swear it will be the last because service is not friendly and I resent giving my money to rude people. They benefit from being in such a good location for after-walk drinks. Anyway went again today. As usual the food was good but service was slow and very rude. Note to self: don't do it to yourself again! They really don't deserve your money!
Nice ambience, friendly people but poor management. Requested water for table never arrived, beef was requested pink and was v well done and would have loved a desert but the table was still uncleared from mains after 40 mins. Gave up. The food was quite tasty (although v potato heavy) but my pie had a large piece of cardboard in 🥴. Some quiet feedback resulted in one of the mains being removed from the bill but I would not come back here to eat. I would come back to have a pint and watch the rugby 👍
Not enough staff on duty, the were run off their feet, we had the Xmas menu unfortunately it was style over substance, why do you have to deconstruct classic dishes? I would also suggest giving your diners more sauces, gravies and cream/custard. Very disappointed
Foods were average. The staff service was not good. When we tried to have the eye contact with them, the waitresses looked away. Pricing structure for special menu was unclear. When the bill was queried, the manager was not helpful and showed the bad attitude. Such a shame as it was our favourite place for Sunday lunch. Never again.
Awful turkey dinner. £23.00 each. Not at all recommended. Ruined our christmas treat. The meat came from a turkey but not at all what at all what we looking forward to . Ok if you like throwing your money away on boned and rolled turkey thigh . Small portions (thankfully in this case ) and Brussels sprouts like bullets. People behind were rudely spoken to by staff member
I had been a frequent visitor to the black horse but stopped after having a not so great experience with my sister last year concerning the quality of the food and the badly cooked items ordered. Sadly today I revisited with my cousin to find out that the sancerre white wine had not only gone up which I suppose you could understand considering the increase on prices at the moment nation wide but couldn't understand the bad quality and in our opinion tasteless!!!! £48 a bottle compared to the previous price seems alot as I was told that they have changed suppliers!!! The second bottle which was a savigion blanc at £35 was far superior and full of taste compared to the over priced sancerre so if you want taste and quality don't go for the sancerre!!! Over priced and can get better elsewhere at a better price!!! Not only that they didn't have any tomatoes yes no tomatoes to put in a salad and was asked if I would like a green salad! But also no broccoli but there is a shop near by that sells this. ( A chef that doesn't have the basics in the kitchen and that is being offered on the menu.l).When it came up i( the salad) was stumps of the base and that's all I could see so I sent it back and was refunded. Pork belly was nice but cracking was terrible just looked liked it had been air dried in the oven no nothing like pork crackling should be. Its the first time that I have never ordered dessert or a coffee and just asked for the bill. Sadly to say this is the second bad experience that I have had at the black horse Woburn which used to be a favourite of mine and friends to visit. But I must admit the service was good!! Sadly it will be the last!!! Apart from dogs barking at customers, also the cod was supposed to come with spinach and leeks but there was no spinach and not told that this wasn't available with the dish????
I am writing to express my extreme disappointment regarding an experience my group of six had at your restaurant yesterday, Sunday, October 26th. We had initially made a booking for a Sunday roast, but we acknowledge that my friend mistakenly booked for Monday instead of Sunday. We arrived at the restaurant around 2:15 PM, and despite our booking error, a staff member confirmed that you would be able to accommodate us as a few tables were finishing their main courses. We were told a table would be ready for us in approximately 30 minutes. We waited at the bar, ordering drinks, and were repeatedly assured that our table would be ready soon, often with comments like, "they are on desserts." This continued for an hour and 45 minutes. By 4:00 PM, after waiting for almost two hours, we were informed that a table was still unavailable. When we expressed our frustration, we were met with unprofessional and aggressive behavior, particularly from a young blonde male staff member. He accused us of making a mistake with the booking, despite the fact that your staff had initially confirmed our accommodation. He rudely stated, "but we are trying to accommodate you even if you did a mistake," and later, "OK, go to somewhere else to enjoy your lunch." We are extremely upset by the two hours we wasted waiting at your restaurant due to misleading information. It would have been far more professional and considerate to simply inform us at 2:15 PM that you were fully booked. The staff's inability to manage tables and customer expectations was evident, and their rude and aggressive attitude made for a truly terrible and disappointing experience.
