D & A Cafe Alameda Reviews
The food is so delicious, large tasty portions. We always have leftovers. The tasty soup accompanies the dishes and is gratis. For San Francisco the price can’t be beat. They have a 3 dish special for $33 (plenty of food). The service is also great. Very nice staff at the cafe.
My friends and I love this restaurant. Such kind staff. Definitely get the set combo, it's 3 entrées for ~$30 (enough for 4 people) and 4 for ~$40 (enough for 5 people). It comes with plenty of rice and an amazingly comforting pork bone soup. It's hard to find value for money like this in San Francisco.
Recommended by Faye Lee. We picked 4 dishes for $45 included soup and rice. We ordered schzuan eggplant, beef stew, chinese broccoli and fried pork intestines. All dishes came out piping hot.
They just happened to be open late night on a Saturday, which I believe they usually are. Don't quote me on that though! Double check their opening and closing hours! Anyway, the service was really quick and the food was absolutely delicious. The bill however was the best part of it all. Super cheap!!! I paid $16 for several items (can't remember what I purchased), for two people and that included a meal with seafood! :). I was stuffed and super satisfied and my bank account was very happy!
Food is decent and customer service is nice & fast :) My wife has to rush to her work 10 mins after we got our food. After we informed the waitress, she quickly brought us togo boxes and check without any hesitation. I ended up finishing my food there. They told me that’s okay. I can just left extra boxes on the table. They are willing to accommodate customers regardless how busy they are. Will visit again!
The food is amazing here. Price is great! We had a group of 8 and really enjoyed sitting at a big round table.
i love this place so much. there are three different happy hours every day and the prices cannot be beat. items that i have tried: - watermelon!!! juice!! great with/without boba 5/5 - hk milk tea 4/5 - bean sprout chow me in 5/5 - salt & pepper tofu 5/5 - beef stew porridge 4/5 - fried pork intestine 5/5 - pea leaf in broth 5/5 - string beans 3.5/5 - french toast 4/5 - green onion pancake 5/5 - fried chicken wings 3.5/5 - bbq pork rice roll 2/5 - pork and preserved egg porridge 5/5 ** complimentary hot tea ** everything is good and so cheap!! also open until 1 am daily.
Absolute gem. Random walk in but it’s some of the best chinese food I’ve had. The chicken was perfectly breaded and crispy and saucy. The beef was tender and high quality. The walnut shrimp was INSANE. 10/10 spot. Deserves a higher rating some people need to learn what sales tax is SMH.
Best Hong Kong Milk Tea in the Bay Area I've been coming to D and A Cafe every day for over 10 years now , and it’s my go-to spot for authentic Hong Kong-style milk tea. I feel like I’m back to Asia. After picking up my kids from school every weekdays , I stop by and the staff already know my order, especially the owner. She always brews it just right: strong tea with a smooth, silky texture, I love sweetened and unsweetened condensed milk that they add to the drink. Their iced lemon tea (dong ling cha) is excellent too. It’s my wife’s favorite. The way the owner crushes the lemon before making it gives the drink a fresh, balanced flavor, not too sweet, just perfect. The staff is friendly, I highly recommend D and A Cafe to anyone looking for quality milk tea and great service
Really good Chinese food. Got the four dishes and rice and soup combo and fed the whole family. The soup of the day was amazing. All of the food was a great deal and will keep us well fed for generations. I especially enjoyed the chow fen. Will definitely be going back again to get more of this delicious and cheap food!
Cheap and good Chinese foods. We ordered the 4 items. Mongolian Beef, Peking Spare Ribs, Bitter mellow and spare ribs, and shredded pork w/ eggplants. Portions were generous, foods were very tasty and flavorful.
Late night cheap eatery. Neighborhood go to. 3 pm to 6 om chicken chow fun ($8.95) with lots of chicken. If you do the dinner, 3 items for $32 then you get complimentary soup. Fried chicken wings=yum
Good food, Happy Hour discount prices, fresh drinks. Great for the whole family. The lobster is my favorite with a Taro drink(w/wo tapioca). Not sure how 2 pictures from 6th Avenue Aquarium got mixed up here, can't delete them but they have a great selection of aquarium supplies and fish. We always go there after we finish our meal here.
December 2025: Updating my review. Bumping up to five star ⭐. Stopped by for lunch and had chow fun and chicken with salted fish 🐟 fried rice 🍚. Both were excellent 👍. They provided free soup as a starter 😀. Will definitely come back again for more noodles. December 2018: Grabbed lunch here on 12-17-18. Pan fried HK style chow mein was very good. Singapore rice noodles were also tasty. Rice porridge was great. Chicken chow fun was very tasty and not greasy 👍. Overall, solid place for noodles. Service is friendly. Note that this is a Cash Only place.
Over all everything is good . But we always came back for theirs lobster noodle - seasonal I think , so call before you come . You can have just lobster with ginger onion , no noodles ! Recommend
Huge menu with tons of options. Good food and big portions. Very friendly and happy staff, and a happy genuine vibe to everything. Had the Borsch soup, clams and the lobster. Will definitely be back to enjoy more flavors. Yummy.
I walked into this restaurant randomly. I ordered beef chow fun. The dish is very satisfying.
Hole in the Wall Chinese Restaurant but if you want deals, they got deals! Its not cheap to eat in SF and im happy places like this still exist in this city for people that don't make 6 figures that live here. Food is good quality and on par with most regular Chinese restaurants. Don’t compare this place to high end Chinese restaurants. If you want 5 Star dining experience go to China Live and pay $25 for some Fried Rice. I love their 3 or 4 items deals and their Baked dishes (chicken, beef, seafood). I literally think this place has the best bang for your buck in SF as portions are not small either.

I love this place been eating here for more than 20 years they have recently re done the inside and made it more clean and friendly, but that plates are still good and big best deal in town. Good quality Chinese food hey have big dishes, family style if you get the same dish menus rheumatism come with rice and soup!’ Really friendly and daily al type family place would recommend to anyone. But you have to bring a few people with a big appetite to try a lot of plates It’s a clement st classic
They treat me like family, their family. Food is always top, never too busy where your needs won't be met, definitely reasonably price.
The food here is very fresh and very vegetable heavy if you order the right dishes so it is very fresh and healthy. Try spicy szechuan green beans with pork. Eggplants with pork beef with bitter melon for Kung Pao chicken if you want a good mix. The prices cannot be beat and the service is super friendly. Highly recommended

I've been a fan of D&A for about 2 years now. Food is always consistently good and the service is always great. Perfect spot for ordering take out or eating in. Highly recommend the shrimp chow mein and the HK seafood curry "Portugal style" over egg fried rice.
I was getting over a sore throat and had a craving for shrimp dumpling soup. I knew there had to be a place on Clement. After a 20-block search, I found D&A Cafe and their varieties of soup. I asked the women behind the counter if I can sit anywhere since it was just me. They said yes, and I seated myself at the nearest available table. After a few minutes I was given the menu, and awhile later my order was placed. I ended up getting shrimp and wonton soup and it was exactly what I wanted and needed. The dumplings were good, and the broth was flavorful and not too salty. And for $5, I thought it was a good deal since it was a big bowl with about 5 of each dumpling. I will agree with the other reviews that it is a long wait to get service. The woman who waited on me apologized and thanked me waiting so I can't complain too much. The menu is extensive and they have specials at specific times throughout the day. It's one of those hole-in-the-walls that's worth checking out if you're on a budget.
This Chinese Cantonese hole-in-the-wall diner has an extensive menu of cheap, flavorful eats. Not everything is wonderful, but most dishes were very good, the portions were generous and the prices are affordable for a large group or family to dine out. Lobster noodles with large, freshly cracked lobster? Rice noodle rolls with BBQ pork rolled to order like in the best dim sum tea houses? This is a restaurant with something to please most anyone.
Still not the prettiest place you've ever eaten but good cheap eats. Not sure but seems there is a Hong Kong kind of direction with the menu. Tonight was salmon with bacon and spinach in a cream sauce. Not bad! But, right, what is that doing on a Chinese menu? Also feels like this menu has a lot of breadth. Not sure we'll ever get to try everything!
Miss the equivalent of this Hong Kong dinner in Oakland. Decor was nice and colorful and was clean. The wait staff was very nice and followed up. Good was expected with plenty of color and flavor. Would you back if in the area.
Placed a delivery order at 1:30pm and got it around 40 mins after. Pork and century egg congee was just ok - i think it lacks garlic and salt. Beef with brocolli and kung pao chicken rice meals were tasty and came with two cups of white rice. Big serving. Very good value for money!
Takeout 5/9/2021. I was at another restaurant trying to do takeout on Mother's day and their kitchen was backed up for two hours. Luckily D&A Cafe saved the day. My meal was ready in 15 mins after I ordered in person. Tonight we had the mother's day lobster special, pea shoots, baked seafood spaghetti, salt pepper spareribs, squid and it came with rice and soup. The staff did an excellent job anticipating the mother's day rush and got everyone's takeout orders in and out as humanly fast as possible. It takes a seasoned chef to get orders out that fast and for it to taste reasonably well. I like how they poked holes in the to-go container on the salt pepper spareribs so it didn't get soggy when I got it home. The lobster, pea shoots and baked seafood spaghetti tasted alright. The salt pepper spareribs and squid were only meh. The included soup was a good appetizer. Good job D&A Cafe!
Great value for takeout. 4 orders for $45 and comes with rice and soup. I used to dine in person occasionally pre-Covid. The place looks a lot more "modern" now.
Delicious, authentic Chinese food from multiple regions of China on the menu, along with outliers like spaghetti and french fries. It's pricy for Chinese food, but well priced for the neighborhood it's in. At least to me, it feels more like a diner than a cafe. The food doesn't always look the best though.
Ordered Shrimp Chow Mein, huge portion for $12.95, and Chicken Steak in mushroom sauce - this was a totally deboned leg/thigh quarter with bbq sauce and sautéed mushrooms. Both super tasty. Took home 2/3 of the former and over 1/2 of the latter. I would definitely recommend.

I swear this restaurant is the closest thing you will get to authentic HK-Style food.. The shrimp rice noodles are unforgettable! It's been 2 years and I still remember the taste. And don't get me started on the lemon tea So satisfying after a ton of delicious Cantonese food. Who cares that the restroom is tiny? You're here for the food and enjoy it! PS Bonus points if you can speak basic Cantonese Phrases. It helps the servers understand you easier :)
Great place in the Richmond district to eat late night chinese food. The food is cheap but the atmosphere is not that clean. The food is tasty for the price. Additionally, D & A provides a good amount of food. The service is slow but the happy hour is great.
The service provided by the waiters was disappointing as they seemed to lack seriousness and attention towards taking care of the customers. On multiple occasions, my family and I felt ignored as they failed to fulfill simple tasks such as providing menus and taking our orders promptly. Overall, our experience was not pleasant. However, the food is good.
Apparently this place *was* great to get your fill of cheap HK style food. Came here with a friend who was expecting that same vibe. Now it’s just cheap food for a NOT cheap price ($9.50 for an appetizer of 8 potstickers??). The low quality is not a problem if the food was still way cheap, but at the current prices, not worth it IMO.
While the service was friendly enough and the decor was kitschy, I can't overcome how inedible the tomato sauce chicken steak pasta was. It was like a grainy glop of tomato sauce poured over the chicken, and the pasta tasted like it was cooked after someone else's order of pineapple and something. Maybe the other menu options taste great but I could not take more than a bite or two before heading out somewhere else. Hot milk tea was good tho, not too sweet.
We started ordering takeout at this restaurant 1 year ago but they have new management and new chefs and when I came to order takeout I found out my food had flies in it, and it wasnt just the soup but the meat too, I dont know any other health violations but I have already reported this the CDPH and the City and County of San Francisco. I ADVISE TO NOT EAT OR ORDER FOOD HERE.
The restaurant looked dirty, the staff was slow to get our order and were very rude when we said we were ready to order. The food took forever to come and they forgot to put in a dish so we never got it. They sat 4 of us at a small table and next to the dirty dishes tub. We asked for a bigger table and they said no in case a bigger group came in. They gave a bigger table to a group of 3 friends. Just don't go, ever! You have been warned!
This review is solely for one of the set meals they have written on the billboard on their windows. It is a beef dish set meal that costs $18.95 and comes with rice and a drink. I got it as a takeout and guess what, there’s a total of SIX pieces of beef in there. A total rip off and not worth the price of the meal. See the photo for truth.
Heartless establishment it seems. I live on on clement next to this restaurant and just locked myself out of my place and asked if I could charge my phone for a moment to call my landlord because the phone just died and they flat and refused and said it’s not our problem. Amazing neighbourly spirit! Not nice
Disclaimer: I deliberately waited over 24 hours before writing this review as I am trying to write this review as impartially as I can. When we visit the establishment, we normally dine in. However, we figure since we were in a hurry to get home, maybe try their takeout. I probably should, but I typically don’t examine the itemized receipt for accuracy. I thought maybe I will try examining it one time, and behold, it was inaccurate. I was charged $53.80 for a $45 meal before taxes: San Francisco doesn’t have a sales tax that is nearly 20%! When I brought this issue to the store owner and the three waitresses and waiter who were present, instead of issuing a refund of the overcharge, I was yelled at, not that I understand what they were saying, since they were using Cantonese, a dialect which I don’t speak. The only waiter who could speak fluent English, however, has for unknown reasons chosen not to help. The foursome insisted that they don’t calculate the numbers on the receipt, that someone else told them to charge me $53.80 for a $45 meal after tax, so they did. The male store owner in particular insisted that the math isn’t wrong, that a $45 meal should be $53.80 after San Franciso tax, yelling the entire time—although he didn’t calculate the numbers, and that he was told by someone else. Strangely, the store owner suddenly decided to give something back, but then as suddenly decided not to give them back, back and forth a few times, each time giving less and less of the overcharge back. I thought to myself, that it was only about $5 overcharge, so while I don’t want to tip for such bad service (who enjoys paying to be yelled at?), I was just going to let it slide and take my order as soon as it was ready. So when the final dish came, I just walked out of the restaurant, ready to drive home since I live afar. When we got home, we were shocked to find that, the last dish, which was the topmost box, was wrong: I ordered fish with bitter melon but it has not a single piece of fish in it! This has never happened with the dine-in. Someone I was eating with suggested that this can be their retaliation since it was the last dish that was delivered after I inquired about the overcharge, where the store owner was yelling at me. I readily dismiss the possibility: maybe it’s just a coincidence, although to be fair, they have never messed up the order before, during the countless times we were eating there. And the place wasn’t busy that day either but I still refuse to believe that they would do such a thing on purpose. In sum, I would advise not ordering takeout at this place. As for dine-in, usually the food is fresh, but on a few occasions, it wasn’t fresh at all, and when the people I was eating with complained, it was readily dismissed. I guess I should known back then that this establishment doesn’t treat its customers with due respect. In sum, I think the service isn’t acceptable, the food can be good if they visit them on a good day, and the atmosphere is reasonably quiet. I however am unsure if I can recommend this place after this experience.
We went to order food with colleagues today and took it back to the hospital. When we started eating, there were bugs in the chicken wings. So we kindly called the restuant to tell them to be more careful next time, but the owner told us that the chicken wings were sold to them by someone else Someone else sold it to them, so if you want to complain, blame them instead of saying they have no problems. Their attitude is very bad We will never go to such a restaurant again.

Review date 08/31/2025 Back in the days ,year of 2003 the food was delicious ,cheap and the place was crowded . My favorite dish vegetable-mushroom over rice was a delish and my food to go order has a generous portion. Visited this place recently on 08/31/2025 and I was surprised was no customers eating (except the same loudly group of "elderly neighbors- friends" who come there for a discounted or leftover -free food ). We dine in and order a few dishes and the regret was instantly when we received the food at the table. The portions were small and the food has a bad taste and is expensive. 4 dishes we paid around $90 with no tips because she don't deserve it. Dirty place, bad food and expensive. We don't eat the food there because was not good but we take it home and put in the refrigerator, second day the food end up in the trash because was smelling bad the chicken. Stay Away !!! from D & A Cafe in San Francisco.
