Buddha Bodai Albee Square Reviews
Came for lunch on a Friday and sat outside. Each section has a fan that you can turn on when it’s warmer. I’m not vegetarian, but heard great things about this place and loved it. We got the pea pod leaves rice roll, kabocha pumpkin pastry, fried taro custard, Buddha bean curd roll, and BBQ meat buns. Only thing I might not get again was the Buddha bean curd roll. The BBQ meat buns were incredible, really similar to actually having the BBQ pork. Excited to come back!
The most phenomenal vegetarian dim sum in Manhattan Chinatown! The food is absolutely delicious and the service is phenomenal. My friends who eat meat say they cannot tell the difference! The food is incredibly flavorful and the staff is wonderful here. Competitive prices for one of the best experiences I had while in Manhattan! Thank you for this gem of a restaurant
My favorite is the BBQ vegetable meat literally taste like I am eating the bbq pork rib tips identical flavor and taste. My favorites are the lo-mein and the chow-fun style flat noodles just delicious 10/10
I love this place. Can I end the review there? Atmosphere: so clean. A lot of tables. Friendly. Casual. Affordable. Bright. So many good things since they just re-opened. I hope they can keep up with the soon to come crowds. This is a gem. Service: so fast and friendly. I can’t imagine anyone coming here and disliking it. The food came out quite fast and hot which means they just finished cooking it. I love my food hot and steaming. Food: It’s your classic Chinese food but vegan! What can go wrong? Let’s start that it’s not the healthiest but they do have healthier options. If you want healthy, go get a salad. If you want Chinese food, come here. Sometimes you just want those good feeling carbs and the smell of soy sauce that we’ve all had as children. It’s great here. We had almost one of everything. The best part is it’s not so expensive. My favorite thing to do it’s to order their lunch special and eat it at the park.
Bustling restaurant serving vegan (and Kosher) Chinese food in Chinatown. The environment was casual, service was friendly and efficient. When seated they give you a pot of tea which was great. They have a dim sum menu, extensive menu of Chinese staples, lunch specials, etc. Ordered the BBQ and Spinach dim sums, and 2 lunch specials - chicken fried rice and general tsos chicken. The dim sum was tasty, the general tsos was crunchy and delicious. Meal was filling. Coming here was a cool experience, enjoyed our time here
I came here on a Saturday for dinner for indoor dining. The place is really clean and the tables had dividers in between which I appreciated. For food, we got the Fried Taro Duck Entree, Lobster in Black Bean Sauce, and Pan-Fried Noodles with BBQ Meat. I didn't realize all the dishes had some deep-fried element, but it was not bad. The fried taro duck entree came with duck sauce on the side and was on top of some shredded lettuce. The "duck" was actually made from bean curd. The "lobster" was alright. It came with some broccoli and candied walnuts. There was no black bean sauce, but it came with a side of sweet mayo. It's similar to the mayo shrimp dish in Cantonese cuisine. The pan-fried noodles were great with the BBQ meat. That was my favorite dish. It did not make me miss meat at all and the sauce was pretty good. I would love to come back and try more dishes! Definitely a win even if you are not vegetarian.
The absolute best vegan meat substitutes we have ever tasted. Seitan and fried bread tasted exactly like beef and chicken with crunchy breading.
This is my go to restaurant for dietary diverse guests since they have it all. I strongly recommend the BBQ meat, it’s their best meat substitute on the menu. They updated several things, removed the outside seating and re-did the menus to include pictures. If this location is full, there is a second location 600ft away on Mulberry, but that location lacks swag and is much darker/dingier. VEGAN AND GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS
This was such an amazing restaurant! I am not normally a tea drinker but the tea they served was delicious! All the food was beautifully presented, great portion sizes and prices, and absolutely scrumptious! I came for my birthday with my family and it was a really nice atmosphere! The art work was really stunning (especially the one with the house on the fish:) the staff were very kind and patient. I highly recommend this restaurant especially if you are vegetarian, lactose intolerant, or gluten free. They have lots of great options for people with dietary restrictions. Thank you to all the staff for making my birthday very special!
Fully vegan dishes, many of the Asian classics and a decent dim sum list. It's not mindblowing Asian food but very, very solid and satisfying - and you can't beat the price in NYC! Weekday lunch specials for under 10 bucks with great portion size. Just the right spot for vegans visiting NYC who don't want to go broke :D
Recommend? Yes. I got the house special congee with breadsticks, bean curd rolls, steamed taro dumplings, and green tea paste bun. The congee with breadsticks was like heaven in a spoon. It's perfect for fall. I can't describe the flavors, but the taste is familiar and simply brings me home. If I have the chance to come back I'll try the two kinds mushroom congee. I didn't care much for the bean curd rolls and the steamed taro dumplings because of the stuffing. One of the ingredients had a slight crunch and I didn't care for that. The green tea paste bun had a hint of floral. It's definitely not like matcha green tea. I enjoyed this very much towards the end of my meal with the hot tea.
Favorite vegetarian dim sum place on the planet? Possibly. Having lived in Hong Kong and Taiwan for many years where vegetarian fare is pretty solid because of the Buddhist population there, I'd have to say this place definitely ranks among the top in the world for cantonese vegetarian dim sum. Absolute favorites: pea pod leaf rice rolls, durian pastry (omg soooo good), sweet sticky rice roll, bbq pork rice roll, and fried bean curd roll. Didn't get it this time, but I also really love their pan fried turnip cake, house cedar fried rice, and triple mushroom pan fried noodles. Service is always excellent. Food is always consistent and delicious. I come here pretty frequently with my Buddhist monastic friends (they're vegan), occasionally with friends, and sometimes just to pick something up for myself when I get a hankering.
Amazing food! We ordered the tofu sesame broccoli, sweet Bbq veg “meat”, dim sum, dumplings, spring rolls and tofu cheesecake. It came out super fresh, hot, quickly and tasted amazing! Facility was clean so were restrooms. Appreciated the quite atmosphere and had an excellent lunch. Thank so much. Worth the trip to visit.
This restaurant caters to the vegan wanna be in this vegetarian. I randomly chose this restaurant while visiting the city based on reviews. What a pleasant and unexpected food journey!! The menu is expansive, may be a bit overwhelming because I really needed a mini personal buffet where I could try everything on the menu. Service was good, quick and efficient. The food was fresh and delicious with very generous portions.
Quiet and delicious right in the heart of Chinatown. Free tea. Get the ribs with black bean sauce special. It's literally the best thing I've eaten in forever. Baked meat buns and dumplings were delicious as well. Definitely try to go before 4 so you can order from the Dim Sum menu. All vegan dim sum is a dream come true.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the entire world. The vegetarian/vegan food is immaculate and the staff is extremely friendly. If you can do Dim Sum take that chance, or any chance to come here. I love the vegan chicken especially.
Note that dimsum is only served until 4pm. The menu is so diverse and there are so many options. My favorite was the duck and stuffed bread (I believe it was in the appetizer section). I also ordered the ribs in black bean sauce and was really disappointed. The texture was weird and flavor bland. The tea is amazing! Aside from the ribs that I described earlier, I loved everything, and definitely recommend it. It's pricey for dinner. Lunchtime is cheaper.
Great atmosphere in Chinatown. The waiter spoke a mix of Chinese and English, which made communication a bit challenging, but looking back, it was a fun and memorable experience. They have an enormous vegetarian menu, unlike anything I’ve seen at similar restaurants. The prices are super affordable, especially for NYC, and the portions are huge. We ordered one main dish for each (two people), but quickly realized that a single main dish would have been enough for both of us. Many other people were taking leftovers home, which would have been a good option if we weren't staying at a hotel. Highly recommended for anyone looking for delicious, filling vegetarian food.
Possibly my favorite vegan-friendly eatery in NYC. I’m a dimsum kinda guy, and they’ve got everything. All the dimsum to satisfy your dimsum needs. They also have a lunch menu where you can order hot food, and it comes with your choice of rice and soup. But I would recommend sticking with just dimsum bexause you’re here for dimsum!! Not saying their lunch menu is bad, it was actually very enjoyable. The menu can be a little frightening so plan ahead.
Haven't been back in over a year. Place has been updated with a refreshing and inviting vibe for a Kosher Vegetarian restaurant in Chinatown. We had a craving for take-out and the lunch specials were reasonable with no extra charge for brown rice and either a soup or spring roll. Everything we ordered was delicious! Will come back again.
It was my first time eating vegetarian Asian food and I was really impressed with the quality. I got the Buddha Bean Curd Roll (the outer wrapping had a bite to it, similar to cabbage rolls) and the BBQ Vegetarian Meat Bun. The rolls had a nice savory and slightly sweet sauce, and the buns were very soft with a very sweet savory filling (some flavors in it of black sesame paste). The prices are quite logical too!
Vegetarian food can be so amazing, and at Buddha Bodai I was able to have some of the best vegetarian dim sum I've had so far. The food was so flavorful and the texture of the dumplings were simply perfect. I went family who were not vegetarian, and while at first they did not have high expectations, they were just completely blown away!
Holy cow this place has some amazing dim sum! It’s fully vegan and kosher so don’t be afraid of exploring the menu. I recommend going in a small group and eating everything family style (sharing each plate) as dim sum is a very social and frequent, small bites type of experience instead of one large plate. They do have noodles, rice, and other bigger dishes if desired. They also serve black tea as is traditional. My favorites were the curry dumplings and the the veg meat bao. While not the greatest dumplings I’ve ever had, they were flavorful. The bao was very soft. The BBQ veg meat had a sweeter flavor to it so eating it with chili oil gave a great flavor. Everything else was solid too — you can’t go wrong with whatever you order.
We order Singapore style noodles, spinach rice rolls, and “fish” curry. Everything was delicious; however I really recommend the rice rolls. The spinach rice roll was the best and is usually hard to find at an all veg place. Next time I go I would totally just order rice rolls and dumplings :) Update: I got to go again!! We tried sesame rice rolls in addition to our usual spinach rice roll:) sooo good. Also got bamboo pith dumplings and crispy bean curd, which were delicious too.
Absolutely love this place! If you are vegan and in NYC, this place is a must. Dim sum is delicious. Love the fried taro and Cantonese dumplings. Cumin lamb is delicious. Service is friendly as well.
Had an amazing experience. Their selection for the vegan items are just out of this world. We started with some hot & sour soup and wonton soup. Both tasted good, specially the wonton was warm but made me felt refreshed 😌. For appetizers we got BBQ vegetarian meat, the first bite and I was in love with the flavor and the way it was prepared. I was not able to put my fork down. Main course we ordered Shredded Gluten & Pickeled Veg in Black Bean Sauce. The Shredded Gluten was really crispy and delicious, the veggies were good as well but the ratio of green bell pepper was way too much. It is also relatively pocket friendly and the amount of food you get is plentiful. The staff was really friendly and helpful with all the questions we had. I would definitely visit again. I have already recommended this restaurant to few of my friends. Definitely worth a visit.
I love that they veganize so many traditional staples without losing its taste, which is so impressive! The vegan pork bun tastes just like the original pork bun, wow! I never thought Chinese cuisine could be veganized so perfectly, and I can finally eat “shrimps” with no fear of triggering my allergy! The walnuts soaked in veggie milk is my fave!
Delicious!!! I got so full off appetizers I didn’t even get to try an entree. But when I tell you the shrimp dumplings & the BBQ meat buns… are to die for - I am not kidding. They remind me of the duck buns I use to enjoy before becoming vegetarian. This hit the spot! The dimsum I did not enjoy was the sticky rice it was bland but still worth it. They also offer discount if you pay in cash & serve you hot tea the moment you sit down which really helps warm you on cold days. 10/10
Lots of delicious options for dim sum. There were so many choices! People here are very nice as well. Generally, I think 3-4 dim sum dishes here per person will fill you up. I loved the Buddha bean curd roll, steamed meat ball, and the beech mushroom rice roll. The fried sticky rice was good but needed a tiny bit more salt. I would order it again. I didn't care for the ribs since the meatballs are much better. My husband had the shrimp dumplings. Definitely recommend to any vegetarian! Will return
A modern dim sum spot featuring all-vegetarian dishes without compromising on flavor. The restaurant is accommodating to dietary needs with a variety of soy-free options available that are just as delicious. Highlights of the meal included the cumin “lamb,” salt & pepper “pork” ribs, pea shoots, and the soup dumplings - so flavorful that it was hard to believe they were meatless! Overall, a satisfying experience and an excellent choice for those craving authentic dim sum flavors while catering to vegetarian preferences.
This place is the real deal. Great food. Great portion sizes. Always end up ordering too much, but always end up finishing everything because the food is great. Super clean restaurant. Cool staff. Dinner menu is awesome, but the Dim Sum menu is where it’s at. Shark fin dumplings, mushroom rice rolls, sticky rice lotus leaf are favorites of mine but you can’t go wrong with anything.
All vegan (unless otherwise marked) Chinese food in Chinatown with great service! My husband and I come here from Brooklyn at least monthly for dim sum because this place is amazing! November 2025 update : we continue to frequent this place! Delicious! There are two gender neutral bathrooms. One is larger with grab bars but not very wheelchair friendly. No step to enter.
For an appetizer, we got the jellyfish. It was so bouncy. The daikon and carrot slaw cut the saltiness nicely. For an entree, we got the chef’s special and asked for it very spicy. It did not disappoint!! We also got the lamb and mixed vegetables in garlic sauce. The lamb texture was on point, and the dish was very flavorful. Would absolutely recommend if you have dietary restrictions, they’re very accommodating!!
Great spot for veg Chinese food in the heart of Chinatown. You must order the General Tso chicken it was the standout dish - super tasty, great texture, the brocolli was also delicious with it. We also had the ho fun with mixed veg and the fish with mixed veg. Noodles were great, fish dish was less my type since it was quite gingery but if you like ginger you’ll love it. The actual dish and mushrooms in the dish were super tasty. Also portions are huge!
Wow what an absolutely delicious meal!! We had planned to visit this place when we looked at Chinatown from the UK before our visit and it did not disappoint. We were welcomed with a pot of complimentary Green Tea which was really appreciated given it was -5C outside. We ordered a Low Mein, Sweet & Sour ‘chicken’, the Buddah noodles and another noodle dish and all 4 were sublime. Good size portions, fresh vegetables, all delicious and with very different tastes. The service was attentive and friendly, we asked to tip and were told it was included - we managed to get them to rebill with a bigger tip as we were paying by card and they were so appreciative. 1 star deducted for atmosphere as walking through Chinatown there were so many intricately decorated places with lanterns etc - but really if you’re a veggie / vegan (or just like good food) this is the place to eat 👌 Go there and try it!
Finally, I have found dim sums I can eat! I got the allergy to gluten, dairy and eggs. Their dim sums are super delicious, freshly made and vegan/vegetarian. I'm missing the taste of the pork and the duck ones. I like meat. ;) Vegans/Vegetarians you can't miss it out! The staff was super helpful, nice and well informed about the food. I had Cantonese and shrimp dim sums and I liked it very much! I recommend it and I will definitely come back.
Beautiful place in Chinatown! Great vegetarian restaurant with plenty of options. We eat meat so we’re curious on how it would taste but it was phenomenal! Had the bbq beef steamed buns and Singapore thin spicy noodles. Both were fantastic. They serve hot tea as soon as you sit which is awesome on a nice cold day.
Everything was good but nothing we tried was absolutely “wow” worthy. Definitely a good spot for veggie friendly Chinese food so you don’t have to worry about little things like whether the oil touched meat or if something is cooked with a fish sauce. Portions were sizable and the price was decent. Service was quick and they start you with tea as opposed to tap water which I thought was a cute touch. We dined indoors and there wasn’t anyone else at the time so we felt safe doing so. They also have the tables decently spaced out with large plexiglass shields between them.
Very lovely vegetarian friendly restaurant! You’re served tea as you arrive, and the service is really nice as well as the atmosphere of the place. Lots of options, as well as gluten free ones which is a major plus! I got the garlic Chinese eggplants and some chilli wontons. The eggplants were fabulous! I think prices are a bit higher than what you can usually find in Chinatown, but still more than acceptable for New York. Knowing how hard it sometimes is to find vegetarian dishes, I will come back!
really good dim sum even if you are not vegetarian/vegan. the best dishes were the beef rice noodle roll and the sticky rice siu mai. we also loved the vegetarian chicken... so crispy and delicious. the char siu bun was good, but a little too sweet for my taste. the zongzi (sticky rice in lotus) was okay, but it was missing some flavor/salt. they have both indoor and outdoor seating right now- the indoor seating is spread out with a plexiglass divider from floor to ceiling between tables.
We always purchase cha-siu from this store when we are in Chinatown. Yesterday it was our first time to have sit down meal from there. The place is clean, and the service is good. They offered set lunch with very reasonable prices (Mon-Fri). We had Chicken noodles & General Tao, both are delicious. Their dim sims are tadte good too. It is worth to give it a try.
5.6.18 - Never fails. We ordered the House Special as normal, the watercress dumplings, the mushroom congee, and the beef chow fun. Service is always nice and relatively fast. You should arrive before 11:30 to get a table immediately, or you could be waiting 15-45 minutes. on a weekend. 8.19.17 - Another after Dim Sum experience with the family and it never gets old. Consistently good, which is incredibly important when you're looking forward to eating certain dishes, like the House Special Tofu. ***ORIGINAL REVIEW*** I've been going here for years and the food is consistently good. It's Kosher so you'll see a diverse group of customers. The staff is generally nice and attentive as well. Do yourself a favor and go for it despite it being vegetarian. I promise you'll find something that will bring you back.
Very good food and a nice atmosphere. It can be a bit of a wait if you arrive in peak hours but it's nice and quiet of you go as soon as it opens. The service is good and friendly, but there is little explanation of what each dish entails. The food itself is delicious, which I can testify to having tried the sweet and sour "vegan chicken", dumplings, spring roll and sweet meat buns. It's slightly expensive for a Chinatown restaurant but the food really is very good.
Food was good, but not exceptional. We got the ‘chicken’ fried rice and the mushrooms with black bean sauce. The fried rice was good, but not spicy (we asked for very spicy). The man at the front desk insists on the full party being there before seating, even if it’s for 2 people and there are empty tables -_- Honestly just a mean move to inconvenience patrons.
Really yummy food and friendly staff. Although the menu does not mention what is vegan or not, it does say if the plate has milk or eggs. The buns were great as well as the sesame fake meat. We got tofu skin with mushrooms that had a fun texture but definitely the least favorite plate. We got 3 buns, a main and a side and it was too much for 2 people. Maybe 2 buns and one main would’ve been enough.
Ever since I got my vegetarian Laksa in Singapore, I've been on a search for the same dish in the New York. I couldn't believe it when I saw Laksa on the menu. I came here multiple times now for dim sum and lunch, but this was the first time ordering Laksa. Laksa: 5/5 So good. On par with the amazing one I had back in Singapore. This is a must try if you like Laksa. The soup base is flavorful and it has the right combination of vegetables. Perfect noodle soup and a hidden gem. 3 Cup Chicken: 3/5 So crunchy, so tasty, but not without a sacrifice. There's nothing to balance the dish. Imagine getting french fries and that's it - no ketchup, no sauce, no nothing. This is exactly what this dish is, but it's so crunchy and tasty. Do give it a try if that doesn't bother you. Cedar Fried Rice: 1/5 Quite lacking, I'd say. Went to a similar chain back in Queens and their cedar fried rice was so good, so thought it might be the same here. Unfortunately, it was just rice, cedar flavored and salted. I would not get again. Service Great! Super helpful staff and very accommodating. I always like coming here because of that. Ambiance Quite normal! Outdoor dining due to Covid and limited indoor dining. There's hand sanitizer at each table, so I appreciate the resource to keep the community sanitized and clean. This was my third time coming here. I would come again. As a vegetarian, this is a must stop if you're in Chinatown.
This place is ALWAYS on point for me, whether it's delivery or dining in. I had one minor hiccup with one of the many deliveries I had from them. Besides that it's great! I got my TRUE CARNIVORE co-workers hooked on a few of the dishes here too. The most favorite to get amongst us here at work is the BBQ ribs as a side dish, the BBQ rib fried rice and bbq ribs with cabbage and brown rice(see pics). That's the only mock meat NOT soy based. I'd refer my other meat eating friends/family here as well if they are on this side of town.
As a vegetarian for many years, I can’t say that I’ve taste really good Chinese/Asian food. I’m very picky but the food was tasty, full of flavor and the SOY was awesome ! Would definitely come back for the “Chicken” Lo Mein. The seafood wasn’t my forte (but I’m that wasn’t the fault of the restaurant just my picky ness). Would’ve given a 5 star if the bathroom was cleaner , but the staff was friendly and kind. The prices were manageable, would recommend and would return !
This is my favorite vegetarian Chinese restaurant. We ordered pan fried dumplings, tofu skin with cedar sauce, mixed sea food with cedar sauce in taro bowl, eggplant in spicy laksa sauce, Buddha’s delight pan fried noodles, and Fujian fried rice. Everything was so delicious. I love their cedar sauce. It goes so well with everything, and it’s so fragrant and savory. My favorite dish was the mixed seafood with cedar sauce in taro bowl. It has been my no. 1 for a long time. I have to get it whenever I’m here. I also love the Buddha’s delight pan fried noodles. The crunchy noodles with slightly gluey sauce were just perfect. Especially when the noodles were mixed with the sauce and got a bit saggy, it was the most delightful texture. The braised tofu skin with cedar sauce was also very good. I especially love the cabbage they put in the bottom of the plate. It absorbs the flavor and with the sweetness of its own. It was my first time trying their Fujian fried rice. The idea was very similar to the Buddha’s delight pan fried noodles, but replaced the noodles with fried rice. I love the bits of the ham in the sauce. Everything was simply delicious, but just like almost all Chinese food, it’s a bit greasy. Good thing was they had some tea to go with it. The servers were also pretty pleasant and friendly.
This is a cute little restaurant serving vegetarian and vegan Chinese food. The place is bright and clean. The waiters are friendly and speak English. I've ordered many dishes and in my opinion, the vegan chicken is the best meat substitute! I find the vegan pork meat to be very soft and unappetizing. I really dont get why some people like it. The flavor is just okay. I recommend the chicken flat rice noodle, pan-fried noodles with chicken, and chicken stir fried thin rice noodles. The chicken has a nice char flavor and texture is medium firm. The overall prices are moderate to expensive for what it is. Unlike most restaurants in the area, this place accepts credit cards, which is a major plus!
Overall a great experience at this pure vegetarian gem in NY Chinatown. We enjoyed the Dim Sum.(BBQ bun was delicious). The dumplings were dry and didnt feel too fresh. For main course or Kung Pao chicken was very tasty (but we didnt like the overload of a cubed crunchy vegetable in this dish). The vege lamb stew was also delicious along with hot wok tossed fried rice. Highly recomnend this place !!
Mapo tofu rocks, Usually all chinese places give a liquid like water with tofu, but here it’s so savory, flavor filled, spicy and up for grabs! The cedar fried rice tastes awesome, usually has a motor oil/wok taste to it - but thats what I bought it for. Tasty chow fun, mild, flavor rich and yummy. Beef coriander soup was okish. Don’t get the dumplings, they seem fresh but just have a bland doughy taste.
I always have such a pleasant experience here. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always smiling and making you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in. The food is nice, warm and satisfying. (I do have to say the sesame chicken batter was extremely thick and tasted like a fried donut which I didn’t love.) One thing I do want to mention respectfully is the bathroom. Unfortunately, it often smells strongly like urine, and not in a way that seems like someone just used it, it smells like it has been stuck on the floor for a while. It’s very unpleasant to experience right before a meal. Because the bathroom is such a small space, I think it would really benefit from a deep reset…removing everything, fully disinfecting, and then checking and cleaning it regularly throughout the day. I’m sharing this because the people and the food are truly wonderful, and this small improvement would make the overall experience match how great everything else is.
We had the sesame chicken (AMAZING), wonton soup (broth wasn’t good but the wontons were) and the veggie dumplings. Food was great, but the service not so much. We waited 20 min after seated and had to flag down someone for water which then he forgot about and had to continue to ask. We’d go back for the food, but the customer service needs major improvement.
Went on a friend's recommendation for a dinner. We got there early but the place got packed pretty soon in the evening. The service was okayish. Food was okayish too. I found it little on the bland side. My husband liked the BBQ pork rest we orders dumplings and seaweed rolls but they were ordinary. Maybe it was wrong selection of items but I didn't enjoy the place or food and not at all excited to go back.
Not as good as it is rated. Would not visit again. Some dishes are cheaper on Uber versus in the restaurant and that did not make sense. Mapo tofu and Singapore style noodles tasted ok not great. Veggie buns were not eatable as it was mostly bun and very little stuffing. We are from Toronto and so we are used to very good vegetarian food and this disappointed in comparison.
This is an excellent option for any vegans! I decided to come here with two friends from college and was not disappointed. We had 3 dishes from here- the roast pork appetizer, the black pepper chicken and the organic tofu with basil. All of which were excellent and we intend to come back the next time we have time. The service was very nice, and the noise was low, so you can easily have a conversation. Edit- Went with 2 friends in August 2021 for lunch and food is still good. However service isn't so great. I understand that there's outdoor seating as well, but service is slow and not very attentive for tea refills. Also, we were rushed out for sure. The server snatched the check out of my hand while paying.
Place was welcoming.Ambience was okay. Welcome tea was good. Food was a little disappointing though.vegan fish was smelly. They used to be good. Until the last time we're there. None of our dishes got Chinese broccoli. Back then, it comes with it. On our way out, we saw the waitress bring out a dish of Chinese broccoli. So I question them. "You told us that you don't severe it anymore. Why are they getting the broccoli? " They told me that a special dish. They paid more. It's over $20 for that dish. When we asked for the check, they told us ok. However, we had asked more than twice and waited about 10 minutes for our check.
Although the portions are generous and the food is tasty, our experience ended up being quite unpleasant. After we finished eating and paid (including the tip) the older waiter who served us showed clear annoyance simply because we stayed at the table for a few more minutes. His attitude was completely inappropriate and made us feel uncomfortable for no reason, especially considering that we had already paid and behaved respectfully. On top of that, the restroom had a noticeably bad smell, which only added to the negative impression. As Latino tourists, the situation felt even more uncomfortable, making the overall experience quite disappointing.
The other similarly named location on Mulberry St is the actual original chef and food. This Mott St is just the original physical location only of the old restaurant, not food. The landlord here took over the place and tried to keep the name to fool people into coming, but the original chef left and opened the Mulberry location with the food that made the place a hit. The staff here were pretty short and unfriendly and the menu has way less options than the Mulberry Street spot. People may say the food is the same, but not as good to me. Glad to have finally tried them both but won't be coming back here. Try them both for yourself if you want though.
Very disappointing. Food had no flavor, sauces were watery. Got the pork and taro stew, tofu and mixed vegetables, soup dumpling, and pan fried dumplings. Soup dumplings were the only good thing. This was on Christmas Eve. I am vegan and thought it would be worth a shot. Seems to fall within the general pattern of vegetarian-specific Chinese restaurants being terrible. Maybe their clientele forget what good food is supposed to taste like. Avoid.
We got the gluten free beef chow mein and it was a very underwhelming dish. They straight up brought exactly that and nothing else. No vegetables in the dish, no soy sauce and no chili sauce. For the cost, a little crazy. We had to channel the vegetables previously cooked in the same wok through the noodles to pretend to enjoy it. A little effort in dish would have gone a long way. When you order ask what else is in your dishes before trusting the menu. I get simplicity but for $20 bucks that was under simple.
Sesame chicken was a 4/5, everything else was barely edible. Don't get the bao or the soup dumplings, they are both clearly pre-made and essentially falling apart. a joke of a dimsum restaurant that's preying off people's dietary needs. Just go to a better dimsum place in NYC and order the vegetarian options. Including a photo of the worst offenders
The male waiter had such an attitude. We were a party of 6 and have been doing a dumpling tour. This place was on the dumpling list, and we placed 2 orders of dumplings, and a drink for one of our family members. The waiter proceeded to say, “Uh this is a restaurant, you have to order more.” Of course, we responded with “oh we just wanted to share. Of course we know this is a restaurant (we’re not stupid), but we just wanted the dumplings.” He proceeded to keep saying “this is a restaurant, you need to order more.” In the end, we left because we didn’t want anything more. There’s no sign or knowledge before hand that you have to spend $15 minimum for EACH person. Looks like a nice restaurant, but it’s upsetting how the staff wasn’t as kind when ordering. He had a lot of sass towards us not ordering more.
Yesterday I went to this restaurant and the experience was terrible! To start with, we arrived an hour before closing time and the waiter mentioned it to me. The food was average. I ordered the sesame chicken and it was salty. While we were eating, they brought us the bill and at that moment they wanted us to pay. They didn't wait for us to finish eating and there were other people there, but I repeat, they only told us. Once we finished eating, they brought us the bill again, but this time the cashier came and asked us to pay the tip in a rude and abusive manner. As we were leaving, he told us repeatedly to come back early, something we will never do again because I read the reviews and they all have the same opinion. Do not go to this place!!!!
2 stars for food, part of the order was okay-ish, nothing special, while the other part was bland and flavorless. 1 star for the service. Complete lack of interest throughout our entire visit, and then marking the suggested tip on the check right in front of us (twice, because we wanted to pay cash so got another check). Twice we had to ask for our change. We always leave a tip (generous one) when we’re served kindly and with a smile (this time we left only 10% because of how we were treated, and even that feels like we should have left nothing… A different staff member collected the tip from our table and we saw our waitress asking coworkers if we have left anything, pointing at us while we were leaving… extremely uncomfortable) This is already the second time this woman has very aggressively demanded a tip. We gave them a second chance, there won’t be a third. Very disappointing and rude.
I’m writing this as I’m eating as I think the food had way too much salt and msg alike stuff that I need to take a long break to continue. This restaurant was recommend by two non-Chinese tour guides, so I thought I must check it out. Looks like they try to mimic the flavour of meat by overdoing the cooking. It tastes too salty and the oil is overcooked so also has a funny taste. I can’t say I enjoy the dish very much. I’ve had much better vegan Chinese food in the past. Maybe I just had a lemon or something. But I won’t be returning so can’t say it for sure. Edit: at the end when I get the bill I told the waiter(also seems to be the boss or son of the boss) the dish doesn’t taste good. He said in a very unpleasant tone that I should’ve told him at the beginning so they can re-made for me. But they never checked on me and most of the time were in the kitchen. I meant I didn’t expect a discount or anything. A simple apology was what I was looking for. Apparently he didn’t intend to do anything for me, only educating me and accusing me. Btw it’s 4 hours later, my tongue still feels burnt by the msg or whatever they put in the dish.
Ate here for the first time after a few years. Boy was I disappointed. I tried to order more food but the waiter told me that I ordered enough for one person basically did. I'm glad I took his advice because it was not tasty nor flavorful unfortunately. The General Tso Chicken tasted like fried dough and just too greasy. Wonton soup had lettuce randomly in it with only two wontons. The lady at the front was very nice but it's clear that I went to the wrong restaurant with a similar name.
