Hop Kee Albee Square Reviews
This was one of the first places I visited when I moved to New York 16 years ago, and it’s still a restaurant I return to from time to time. I’ve always come here for the spicy fried pork, the stir-fried clams, and the fried flounder — dishes I’ve loved since the beginning. The restaurant hasn’t changed at all over the years. Some of the staff I used to see are no longer there, but it’s still the elderly gentlemen who handle the service. They may place the dishes on the table with a somewhat brusque and indifferent manner, but if you bring wine, they’ll carefully open each bottle for you. When you ask for something, there’s rarely much reaction or small talk — yet they never forget, and somehow it arrives faster than you expect. That’s part of the charm of this place. If you’re looking for somewhere quiet and relaxed to enjoy a meal with family or friends, this is always the first place that comes to mind — and one I never hesitate to recommend.
Best Chinese food in Chinatown. I’ve tried others like Wo Hop but nothing comes close. The seasoning is perfect. I grew up eating Chinese food across Hong Kong, Singapore, and Indonesia, so I know what authentic tastes like :)
The best Chinese Food in Chinatown, and even in NYC. They’ve been showcased on numerous tv shows also. They cook their food very quickly and the food is just incredible. The one thing to note is that Hop Kee only accepts Cash. Whether you get their Cantonese Crab, Lobster, Fried Rice, Lo Mein, Pork Chops, or even snails; there’s something delicious for everyone to get from Hop Kee.
Good Cantonese restaurant. Straight up no frills. Sit order. (Ordering in Cantonese gets you more smiles from the waiters) The menu is mixed American Cantonese (Chicken breast slices and boy choy) and Cantonese. Order what you want. Sit back and enjoy. My loves are the salt and pepper squid, black bean snails, beef ho fun, and flounder fillets w lofah. ANY salt and pepper dish is good. The squid and chicken wings are kid favorites. If you really want to see what the Chinese written menu has. Take a snapshot and use Google translate. Example: 3 Color steam eggs are Chinese family’s favorite. The eggs come out drizzled with soy sauce and the texture is like silken tofu. Broaden your horizons and taste the rainbow. Enjoy.
I am a 20+ year Wo Hop loyalist, so I have always been hesitant to try a new place - especially a place next door. I decided to go on the recommendation of a friend, and realized there is room for more than one great Chinese place in Chinatown. The sweet and pungent pork was outstanding. I have this place in my rotation of spots that I will go.
Did BYOB with some Kinmen Kaoliang from next door. It must have been a rare sight to see a Korean drinking Taiwanese liquor here, as the staff were extra friendly, pouring drinks and bringing ice. But the real deal is the food—delicious and overflowing portions. I kept looking around at other tables because everything looked so good! CASH ONLY. Bring your wallet and some cash. Honestly, you'll have so much money left over that you'll definitely need that wallet for the change.
Old school New York that is quickly disappearing. When I was a teenager we would come to Hop kee at 2am for late night food and authentic Cantonese fare. Now they close at 9pm but the food remains first rate and worth the visit. The pan fried flounder is still a stand out and must try. We get it with the Salt & Pepper shrimp and mixed fried rice which are also super yummy. The Peking pork chops are also good and they go well with Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce. We’ve never tried the Peking Duck here about maybe one day. We usually need a walk around Chinatown after visiting since we’re stuffed with all the tasty treats! We highly recommend.
I was looking for the ideal place for Chinese food, fortunately I found it .... Hop Kee Restaurant was perfect for my family, the food was simple but delicious. The people were very kind and always making sure we have everything we need. I definitely recommend this restaurant... I will come back soon.
This establishment consistently delivers exceptional dining experiences. The menu remains consistent, and the service is impeccable. The prices are reasonably affordable for downtown New York City. Notably, Chinese restaurants in Las Vegas Springs Mountain area are surprisingly more expensive and smaller servings nowadays.😳
One of the best Cantonese restaurants we’ve had the pleasure of trying! Hot, fresh, and delicious. We got egg drop soup, steamed pork dumplings, roast pork mei fun, and moo goo gai pan - which were all great! Service is wonderful and we had no problem walking in to eat around 5:30 on a Saturday afternoon must visit if you’re in the area!
The crab Cantonese is incredible. I only get to NYC once every year or so to get it and then for the rest of the year I dream about having it again. Any of the salt and pepper dishes are amazing as well. I’ve had all of them and all are 5/5. And the broccoli with garlic sauce is the perfect side dish.
Goodness the salt and pepper lobster was sooooo good ❤️❤️❤️ we couldn’t stop savoring every bit of our dish. Also enjoyed the seafood delight basket and the crunchy basket was fantastic! But the lobster 🦞 (swoon…) was sooooo good and that isn’t even the house specialty - we saw plates and plates of 🦀 in a rich sauce fly out of the kitchen and devoured by guests! We made plans to return the next day (Sunday) to try the crab 🦀 but were too late. Definitely are coming back to try the crab - whatever the house specialty was we saw AND salt and pepper crab or lobster. We have found a favorite restaurant for sure. Be advised - like many restaurants in Chinatown, they are cash only. UPDATE: We went back to try the Cantonese style crab and the salt and pepper shrimp. The crab was SO good and the shrimp was jumbo, crispy and delicious. They served with rice and we were stuffed. We will definitely return, this will be a favorite restaurant for us. UPDATE #3: We went back to celebrate a birthday request for Chinese Food. In addition to the Salt and Pepper lobster we decided to try the whole fish (great), steamed dumplings (🥟 I’m not a huge fan of steamed and prefer fried but our guest wanted steamed and enjoyed that they are larger sized) and the bbq pork chops (I didn’t eat but everyone else loved) Really good dinner!
Best Chinese food you'll ever eat. The pork ribs was very delicious and it had good amount of sauce with every bite and every piece. The seafood with noodles was very good too but the fried salted squid 🐙 was my favorite. They offered large rice for all of us. The complementary hot tea was nice. Overall we liked it and will definitely go again.

Stopping in for lunch after sightseeing was a great choice. The ambiance was normal but different being in Chinatown. The service was very quick and accurate. It couldn't have been a better stop.

Hop Kee has been a Chinatown staple for years, known for its solid Cantonese cuisine. The walls are lined with photos of celebrities who have dined here, (like Anthony Bourdain) adding a touch of old school charm. Prices have definitely increased over the years, so expect to pay more than you might have in the past. Note that it’s a CASH ONLY establishment, and an 18% gratuity is automatically added to your bill, no matter the size of your party.
Food 8/10 Slightly on the salty side, but everything was thoroughly enjoyable. Every single dish was very largely portioned. The fried rice was a classic, brought me right back to childhood. The salted pork chops were the highlight of my meal though, perfectly tender yet chewy. Simply seasoned with salt and pepper, golden around the edges. Water spinach came in very long strands, but I do typically enjoy it a bit more chopped up. Cooked well though with garlic, and as my favorite vegetable, I ate it right up. Atmosphere 8/10 Large underground space, filled with a mix of tourists and locals. You know it’s a spot that’s been around considering the decor and the booths. Service 8/10 Very solid service, speedy and efficient.

I know this is a mainstay and fan favorite for many years but for our taste it was okay at best. Anthony Bourdain had his reasons and like all reviews, it’s subjective, personal preference. It wasn’t that we had unrealistic expectations but that it was average, typical, American Chinese that could be found anywhere besides NYC Chinatown. Yes, comparably, it is an inexpensive place to eat and the portions are huge. If you are out late and looking for something to eat besides pizza before continuing the night, this would be your place.
Food is still good but the prices are no longer affordable. I can get authentic chinese food in New Jersey at Lotus Cafe without paying for New York tolls. Prices used to be good here before.

We did not finish our food and asked Chen to place our left over to take home boxes, when we got home our pork dish is missing. The pork dish is the one we barely touched and we’re looking forward to eat it at home but they forgot to give it to us. Lesson learned: since hop kee takes the left over dishes to pack it in their kitchen, remember to check everything after they hand it to you. It would have been better if they just gave me the containers and made me pack it myself. How I wish I brought ziplocks instead.
