Chan's Arcata Reviews
Delicious noodles .....great authentic taste. I loved the chow mein I'd had gotten. Only thing that kinda sucked was that there's no fortune cookies here cause he can't get any I'm stock anymore I guess ...probably result of covid.
A cool place. When you walk in the restaurant it is like time stood still. And we all like that. The food is YUMMY. Clean eating NO MSG added to the food. We enjoyed ourselves. GREAT SERVICE. They give you a lot of food. We will be frequenting Chans. ❤
Chan's has been serving Humboldt County Chinese food since 1942! And the current location has been in operation since 1972. The place might not be the most eye appealing exterior but don't let that keep you from pulling into the parking lot. Inside you'll walk into the restaurant probably exactly the same way it looked back in the 70's! One of the Chan's family members will seat you and bring you water, hot tea and take your order. The food is so so good. It's much more traditional than typical white washed Chinese food. Three generations of the Chan's family can be found working there on a daily basis. The excellent recipes have been taught and passed down from the grandparents to the kids and now the grandkids and soon the great grandkids. I can definitely recommend you must try this place for yourself. They also have a huge number Togo orders. If you prefer to grab and go, they certainly will be able to accommodate that for you!
First off if you are reading this ignore all those 1 star reviews I read them all and they are very vague. Secondly i eat here every week the food tastes great. I always order my food together the floor may need new carpet, but the food is absolutly wonserful. My regulars are the general chicken and i ask them to make it spicy or the number 1 combo which comes with awesome pork fried rice mar mar chicken and pork chow mein they always give you the choice between soft or hard noodles. But my favorite side to get with the is the cheese puffs a classic and they make it great. They have nice kind people working as staff who remember you and always are down for a little convo while you wait. I heard bad things about them before i went there and good, but when i actually tried them they are great! Oh but i wouldnt go here if you are vegan vegitarian is fine enough but they don't have really many vegan options cause there noodles are made with egg and all. Still if you arent vegan you'll love there food.
The place does look abandoned on the outside but inside looked very clean and nice. I ordered a honey walnut prawn dish. The broccoli was great and prawns were great. The white sauce was scarce but I was never a fan of it to began with, from any restaurant so that didn’t bother me. I’d recommend this place! I wish I knew it was open sooner
The food was sublime. I have never had a better meal! In my fifty years of life I’ve been to a lot of restaurants and as a Michigan resident I was really excited to check out some Californian Chinese food. I have been to well over 500 Chinese restaurants in my life and this was by far in the top 10. The service there was extremely helpful and accommodating and the server was kind and informational. Would recommend to all!
The food is fresh and reasonably priced. Love this place and similar restaurants like it. Support them and enjoy really great food. Google reviews are always some snob who doesn’t know a good thing when they eat it

Good food, love it. Heard they make the best burger. Need to use less corn starch in sweet and sour sauce
Honestly because I am currently on a diet, all I had was rice (lol and I'm on the carb free diet, but that was a slip up!) But their rice was REALLY GOOD , plus the two people I was with enjoyed their food tremendously so I can speak for myself and for them. Owners seemed extremely friendly as well 😁

Poor quality fatty meat & not much of it. Veggies in huge hunks, nothing in egg rolls but cabbage. Too much rice. Cheaply put together meal for a high price. Don't recommend it
I asked about the differences between the crispy and soft noodles for the chow mein, wanting to make sure that I got the "stereotypical" chow mein and they insisted it was the crispy noodles. I even asked again after they'd taken the order, and again they said it was the one I ordered. It wasn't. The taste of the item is good, but it's not what I wanted so I have no stomach for it. If they were that desperate for the $2 extra I would have been fine if they'd told me it was wrong and let them keep it; but they kept it up that this was the one I wanted. The orange chicken and pork fried rice is the only reason why they're not getting one star, they're really good. Really disappointed in their lack of honesty.
I was hoping the good reviews were accurate but unfortunately I don’t think I can finish my food. Unseasoned greasy chow mein, and fried foods that look like they were over dunked in batter and not shaken off before being fried. When more than half the piece of food you’re eating is just fried bread, you’re not really eating substance. Chicken smells old. I avoided this place for 15 years because “Chinese American” is rarely a successful venture and the outside looks very old. Given how few options we have around here I thought I’d finally try it, and sadly won’t be back again. Gordon Ramsay should work this place over...

Worst Kung Pao chicken I've ever had. Where to start: Watery, not saucy. Literally 3/4 of it is celery, 10% onion,5% meat,5% peanuts,5% carrots. I'm going to just make it myself from now on instead of fkn with any local BS Chinese. There isn't a decent Chinese restaurant in Humboldt. Period. If you think this place is good you don't know Chinese food. I've had Chinese food from the Eureka mall that was better.
100% waste of money. This was the worst take out experience. Egg rolls where deep fried puffs with 25% smushy cabbage and 75% air pockets, nothing else. Horrible. Orange and sweet and sour chicken came with awful deep fried completely off looking chicken. The broccoli beef was nasty. The beef was off, like it was sour and there was only about 2 pieces. The broccoli appeared to be frozen and cooked to mushiness. 🤢The only thing that was edible was the chow mein (tho it didn’t contain chicken, kinda happy about that in hindsight) and the fortune cookies. Everything else went in the garbage. Cannot stress this enough, do not order from here! I do not understand how they are in business. Support another small business that actually gives your family a decent meal for your money.
The worse Chinese food I wish I never had! I tried but couldn't stomach it! The rice tasted like barley and the chicken looked like it came out of a can of fancy feast! Bleh!!! 😩
Worst chinese food I've ever had. The egg roll was just soggy fried Cabbage and was disgusting. The fried rice was stale and tasted like it had been reheated for days. The fried pork was dry and tasteless. Ended up feeling really sick all day after eating only a few bites of their food before throwing it away I could not get through any of it. Waste of money do not bother stopping here. I read the reviews and saw alot were bad but some were raving for this place so I figured I'd give a shot since we don't have alot of Chinese options around. Huge mistake
The food just isn't good at all. I wish it was better I'm not even that picky but it's flavorless and pretty underwhelming. I got the wonton soup and some chow mein the chow mein was totally okay but the soup doesn't pass for soup. Hot cabbage water at best. Maybe they need a new chef.
The service wasn't bad; the food was cheap and ready extremely fast, although one must ask in order to get any utensils or napkins with takeout. The reason I have rated 1 star is the most important part of a dining experience-- the food. It was heinously bad by my standards. It was mostly bland, greasy breading with tiny bits of meat, and the noodles were the most mediocre I've ever had in a restaurant. If you wanna slight your enemies, reccomend this place to them.
Worst Chinese food in existence. Everything was stale. Chicken had to be expired. The sweet and sour sauce was so watered down it had no taste. Even the soy sauce was just salt water with food coloring. The burnt the rice and still served it to us with char in it. Was hoping this place was good because it’s location. Probably won’t eat Chinese food for a while now..
The service was amazing! She was very nice.. However.. Im so sorry to say this but this Chinese food wasnt good. My egg rolls were raw in the middle.. the batter hadn't cooked all the way. The lo main had no taste. And the pork fried rice was gummy and had zero taste. Please do better!
