Akai Hana Carrboro Reviews
Nice sushi joint. Traditional sushi style. Would be nice to see some innovative rolls utilizing fruits here. Did enjoy the larger than normal veggie rolls. We had the Rocky Mountain roll and it was quite good. Had the seafood broth soup. It was okay. The tofu in it was great tasting though. The Alaskan Roll was very good. Topped with big Salmon Roe.
We love the shrimp and vegetable tempura as well as the various sushi and rolls we have ordered over the years. The geisha and eel rolls are some of our favorites. The food is always fresh and the portions are generous.
Phenomenal dining experience at Akai Hana! The sashimi/sushi we ordered exhibited incredible presentation and quality. Our dinner was complemented with delicious sake and topped off with a homemade dessert from a partner bakery. One of the best Japanese restaurants in the triangle.
This place is a great place to eat! Super friendly staff, great food for sure!! It gets BUSY so be prepared to wait sometimes 45 minutes for a table on a Friday during dinner rush.
I have only had one item from here and it was take out, but it saved me. I was on a clear liquids only diet for medical procedure and on the fourth day, someone suggested their miso soup. I ordered a lot of it and it literally saved me. I hadn’t had anything good to eat in days. I can say for a fact that the miso is excellent and hearty, and I didn’t get tried of it.
Can you say "hidden gem"!?! Not sure what took me so long to discover this restaurant, but it was well worth the wait! Cool place, great vibe, really good rolls... Sign me up.
I’ve been looking for a quality sushi place for two years. I know a lot of people love “alphabet letter” Sushi place-I just don’t really care for it. However, the 3 times we have been to Akai Hana I had various rolls and my husband has had sashimi. He said it’s been outstanding and mine has been fabulous as well. Also had the edamame and the ginger salad. I did ask for the edamame to be served warm which they did and it was great.
Great experience! Had the Mixed Tempura, Sushi/Sashimi Combo, Master Roll, Super Whitefish (Escolar) nigiri, Sapporo beer, Mango & Strawberry Mochi Ice Cream, Green Tea Ice Cream, and Ginger Ice Cream. I wish the ginger ice cream had more ginger as its current ginger taste is very subtle, but it was still delicious. Service was great too, and I regret not remembering the waiter's name!
I just moved to Carrboro and came to Akai Hana for the sushi burritos. They were good so I came back for some sushi rolls. I typically only go to places with bogo but the sushi seemed decently priced. I ordered maybe 3 rolls, my favorite being the Vivid Dreams roll on special. This is the best sushi I have ever had. I don’t even care that it’s not bogo. I love sushi and I eat it a few times a month and this place blows the others out of the water. Please give Akai Hana a try. You will not be disappointed! Also I wanted to mention that my server, Joey, was excellent. He was so kind and friendly and enthusiastic about my order which was a very pleasant surprise
A group of about 10 of us ate here on a Friday night. First, I want to say how accommodating and sweet the staff were. They do not take reservations, so we felt bad for overwhelming them on a busy night, but they treated us so kindly and did not express any inconvenience. Everyone really liked their food. The first picture is mine where I got the sweet potato tempura roll and inari roll (inner 2 rolls). I am a vegetarian and there were so many more options than I’m used to and it was soooo delicious. The outer two rolls are what my friend got, but I forgot what they were. He really liked them though. In the second picture, my friend loved the roll with plum in it and has always really liked the food here. Lastly, the third picture, my friend really liked the lobster lover. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place, I would just suggest going in smaller groups to put less stress on waiters!
Wow wow wow wow. I travel a lot and have high expectations for sushi and Akai Hana met them and then some. Even the small stuff was treated with care: their salad comes with the best home made ginger dressing I’ve ever had over mixed greens and their sushi itself is excellent down to the last piece. Staff and service are top notch as well. Go now! 🍣
Food was decent. Tempura was cooked perfectly, the sushi rolls were great. Miso soup made was good and strong. The ginger dressing was awesome on the salad. The teriyaki sauce was good tasting but way too watery. Used to a thicker sauce for teriyaki. Broccoli and carrots was a disappointment. Seemed there was a better opportunity for a Japanese vegetable dish, maybe with bean sprouts in a soy sauce and vinegar... Hint hint. Even orange slices would of been better. Tempura sauce was good too.I am a little harder on Japanese restaurants because I was raised on Japanese food, wish they had saba....😔 Would I go back ..Yes. Parking is very limited. And being that most Japanese restaurants in North Carolina aren't that great this one is good and it gets crowded fast. Staff is great here. Prices are actually decent.
Decent selection of sushi better than expected in the area and it was fresh and very tasty. Roles were well composed and Sashimi was nicely sliced. Wish they had a wider variety of fish but all in all a great experience. Have only 2 unfiltered sakes tho.
To be honest it was not as good as google makes it seem. The service was poor, we didn’t get water until 10min and although all other tables were told the specials, we were not. It was very loud and hard to enjoy the atmosphere, the decoration was nice but that’s about it. And the food was mediocre at best. And options are very overpriced, especially for the sushi; $7.48 for only two nigiris, not great.
The meal and decor presentation looked good, and I was excited. But this burrito with sweetness tasted terrible. Don't order burritos if you like rolls with Norri and classic rolls. The salmon was pretty good, and the steak was also all right. The ginger sauce for the salad was not flavorful, and what I usually get at all, it tasted like a mistake sauce. I recommend that the team go around and try some ginger sauces in the area and try a better recipe. For example, in Burlington, the good one is at Passion Fusion Grill. In Hillsboro, there is incredible ginger sauce at the Asian dine-in next to Social Services of Orange County, and the Suchi place next to TJ Max in Burlington has yummy ginger sauce. Please do it better, guys, so we don't have to drive so far to have a perfect experience.
The wait was around 20-30 min which was fine. I got teriyaki steak. My partner got sushi. My meal was not good. The steak was ok at best. The only positive thing I have to say about it is that it was cooked to the temperature I requested. The vegetables were steamed. The carrots were too hard to eat. The only alcoholic drink options are beer, wine, sake. My partner stated their sushi was equivalent to grocery store. There was a long wait for the food which the wait staff apologized for. I wasn’t upset about that. I’m just disappointed in the quality of the food. With that being said the wait staff was nice. And attentive. But I wouldn’t go here again.
