Penny's Diner Dunsmuir Reviews
Great customer service, very helpful while I was passing through on a long road trip.
We found this little gem of a restaurant on a road trip home. The diner is the old-fashioned kind and very cute with a view of Mount Shasta and forests. The food was excellent and we enjoyed Barbara who served us. She was fun, delightful, and a good cook.
Service was prompt and courteous. We both made alterations to the menu items we chose and it was not a problem. We got take home boxes and paid less than our previous meal at Denny's which were from the 55+ and kids menus. Food was very good.
Truly one of those diners you find once a lifetime. Great people work there, knowledgeable about the area, attractions, etc. Very personable and friendly staff and local folks that frequent it. Food is great. I look forward to returning.
The unconventional charm of Penny's Diner—a delightful old train car conversion—makes it stand out. The pricing is moderate, and the open-kitchen concept, where you can watch your food being made, is a great feature. Our biscuits and gravy breakfast was superb and satisfying. Their milkshakes are also top-tier and a good value. Most importantly, the staff are genuinely kind and provide service that makes you feel valued, unlike the dismissive attitudes you sometimes encounter at other places. Highly recommended!
We stopped for breakfast. It was clean inside the unique building. Bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns were cooked just right and delicious. Cinnamon roll was not as big as a plate, but it was still really good. Service was good, and there was a steady stream of customers as well as call in orders when we were there. Easy on and off the freeway.
I like this place. It's open 24 hours in an area with limited options and the food comes out super quickly. It's basically a waffle house in the mountains. I ate here twice once for lunch another time for breakfast. The image is of a breakfast burrito. The food isn't incredible but it's still pretty good.
Everything was excellent! Best diner food I've had in a long time. Keeshan was the cook, and he made everything to perfection. It all tasted fresh. I really appreciated how clean the whole place was. Even the restrooms. Our server was Barbara and she was so friendly and pleasant. All the staff there created an excellent atmosphere. They seemed like a great team. I can't wait to come through again. We were here on a Saturday at 9PM.
Came in after a long drive and seeing a sign that read Pennys Diner on the 5! Today I ordered: Waffle $4.25 Hash Browns $3.25 Water The waffle was excellent perfected the flavor was great without or with syrup. Butter smothered was best! The top of the hash browns were crispy the underneath was not…. They also had no seasoning so I added some salt and pepper. Overall the food was good. The diner is extremely clean which is nice. If you’re making the long haul on the 5 it’s worth the stop for a cool place to get a great bite to eat with friendly staff.
Wonderful hidden diner. Food was amazing as well as the service. The Cinnamon Roll was so fresh and delicious. Brownies are fresh and moist. Jalapeno poppers, onion rings and fries are perfectly crunchy and hot. Ordered Bacon Burger and Chili Burger. Very flavorful. Will definitely stop again on our future trips.
Fun atmosphere and nice guys working here. Food was good for the price. The guys working were quick to help us and it was fun watching them make food since the layout of the kitchen is in front of the dining seats.
Great little old time 50's style diner. I had Monterey chicken. My mother had chopped beef and mushrooms and my husband had a western burger. All tasted great, however mom said her gravy was cold. The staff was very charismatic and friendly. Pricing was excellent, not gonna break the bank. I didn't get any food photos but got one of the view from my seat. Overall a pleasant experience.
Loved the vibe of this restaurant, such a great atmosphere. The food wasn't that great, but they did have a lot of options. The service was good once a new waitress took over. When we're passing through next time maybe we'll just stick to the shakes and desserts. Definitely worth the stop for scenery and vibes! ⛰️ 🏔 📷 🤳
Cute little diner from the highway. Food was good. Although I have an allergy, my husband asked if they can warm up my own toast for me since they didn’t have any gluten-free options they said no due to cross-contamination, and then they proceeded to put their toast on our food in a Togo box on top of the eggs. They never came back for refills or to ask if we needed anything.
This used to be one of my favorite 24/7 retro diners, but unfortunately, this visit didn’t live up to past experiences. I ordered scrambled eggs and was served what was clearly an omelette. When I pointed it out, the server responded, “That’s how we make our scrambled eggs.” After I mentioned I had been here before, she quickly changed her explanation to “each cook makes it in their own way.” (I have photos of my same order from last year on this review) She did offer to fix it by cutting the omelette into pieces, which I declined. To her credit, she wasn’t rude and even recognized us from our previous visit, which was a nice gesture. I also overheard other diners making similar comments about the scrambled eggs, so it wasn’t just a one-off issue. Disappointing overall, especially given how much I had enjoyed this place in the past.
We come here all the time, the food is great. However, my wife has a severe allergy to cucumbers, and the last two times we came here the cook overlooked that we asked for "no pickles" on her burger. The first time we just notified them and they remade the burger, no problem. The second time though, it was the same cook, and she again served the burger with pickles. Then, instead of remaking the burger like last time, she said she would remake it, but instead just removed the pickles and re-served the burger. The burger came back to us much faster than expected, but we trusted her and my wife ate it. Then my wife started having an allergic reaction as we were getting in the car, and had an itchy and swollen tongue, mouth, and throat for the next 2 hours. This kind of gross negligence can really hurt people and is completely unacceptable. Be careful eating here as clearly a couple bucks matters more to these people than people's lives.
I use to like this place very much. We came in between shifts but this is not a good reason for rush customers. We ordered eggs well done and they were runny. They didn't give us the dressing for the salad. When the guy brought us the chilly he was holding the bowl with a finger inside it. As well the bread was soft when we expressed wanted it well grilled. Not happy.
