Mapo Galmaegi Flushing Reviews
This place is delicious and the staff is super nice
There was a huge variety of yummy side-dishes, including “mul-kimchi”. The marinated spicy raw blue crab was delicious and very nostalgic of the times my grandmother made it in my childhood. The waitstaff were friendly Korean aunties. I recommend the marinated pork rib since the seasoning wasn’t too sweet!
wanted to try kbbq for the first time with my family, glad to say it was a great experience! the waitress was very patient and friendly while my parents took very long to decide what to get, and they provided us with many sides as well. they also gave us a dish on the house, and to top it off, gave us yogurt drinks (which i love very much!). definitely would come back again.
The hostesses are so warm and inviting. The food tastes just like the food I had in Korea when I lived there. The best home away from home feeling if you new or familiar with Korean cuisine. Try it all 😋😋😋
This place is pricey but so nice and quaint. I really liked the food, and it was so much left over that I had it the next day. My two year old also ate a lot. I would go back. There were so many side dishes that were so good. I love the side dishes and hate it when places only give you a small variety. This place gave a good amount. I spent about 170 for two adults. I did not get the grill. Everything was cooked in the kitchen, but next time, I might do the grill.
Charcoal definitely makes a huge difference in the flavor of the meat. And the quality of the meat was very good. Side dishes were perferct and various. The best of all was the service. Fast, friendly and warm. The best service I have experienced.
Authentic traditional Korean food, good service and priced right
Each dish at Mapo is a revelation, showcasing the exquisite harmony of fresh, high-quality ingredients and expert seasoning. The BBQ dishes, in particular, are a symphony of smoky, savory goodness, tantalizing the palate with every bite. The variety and richness of the flavors offered make each meal a unique journey through the splendid landscape of Korean cuisine. Mapo’s ambiance is a harmonious blend of warmth and authenticity, creating an atmosphere that is both inviting and comforting. The interiors resonate with a subtle elegance and a touch of tradition, enhancing the overall dining experience. The staff at Mapo Korean BBQ are the architects of hospitality, their attentiveness, and dedication to service elevating each visit into a memorable encounter. Their passion for sharing the beauty of Korean cuisine shines through, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the culinary feast.
One of the best authentic charcoal korean barbeque restaurants in New York. Top notch all around - quality of meat (especially short rib), quality of charcoal, hearty home-made side dishes, and hospitality. Servers cook your meat to perfection. Try the short ribs, both unmarinated and marinated.
I grew up coming here with my mom. The meat, especially the classic Mapo Kalbi, is exceptional—marinated perfectly and incredibly tender. Their banchan is also amazing, and they never skimp on portions. However, I’ve noticed that the other dishes and appetizers have declined in quality. Despite the language barrier, some of the waitresses speak Chinese and are accommodating. I'm surprised by the low reviews and service complaints, though I can understand how the busy atmosphere might make some feel rushed as the servers work to keep things moving.
Get the lunch. Great staff and even greater food. Got L1 and L4. Too much for 2 people considering the 10 complimentary appetizer dishes.
Followed only "highest rated Korean restaurants on google map" in Koreatown in Murray Hill and FAILED several times and this one is legit !! Happy to find out this spot as Authentic Korean restaurant. High rating is not credible in this Murray hill area at least!!
One of the best places to get authentic KBBQ. Side sides are really good, and they bring food out FAST. From what I know, this is the only place that will cook your food on charcoal. The marinated kalbi is the way to go. They cook the meat for you and make sure meat does not burn. This is one of my favorite restaurants! Bring cash for tips. The atmosphere is very Korean, meaning you have to hail the waitress and tell you what you want and when you want. It's not considered rude!
Um its pretty good. Server was nice, food did taste good. At first we went across the street to Hongdae but that place was empty with no customers so we were iffy, we came here and the waitress took care of us. The meat was good. The price okay.... overall we had a good experience: I guess it was a hit or miss and today was just a good day
Recently having the pleasure of dining at Mapo, a Korean barbecue restaurant nestled in the heart of Murray Hill, and let me just say - it was an absolute culinary delight! Known for its commitment to authenticity and traditional cooking methods, Mapo truly stands out as a gem in the world of Korean cuisine. The star of the show at Mapo is undoubtedly their Mapo Kalbi, succulent marinated beef ribs that were tender and bursting with flavor. Another standout dish was the Mapo Heukdweji Samgyupsal, thinly sliced pork belly that melted in your mouth with each bite. These dishes perfectly showcased the restaurant's dedication to preserving the essence of Korean barbecue with their exceptional quality and taste. What truly set Mapo apart, however, was the thoughtful touches that elevated the dining experience to a whole new level. The ajhumma (auntie) serving us generously provided an array of banchans (side dishes), each one more delicious than the last. One particular standout was the soy sauce marinated crab, a delightful treat that added a unique and flavorful touch to the meal. Learning that the crab was shipped all the way from Korea showcased the restaurant's commitment to authenticity and quality. To cleanse our palate after the hearty meal, we were treated to Naengmyeon, a refreshing bowl of cold noodles that provided a tangy and cooling finish. It was the perfect way to end the feast on a light and satisfying note. As a final gesture of hospitality, we were pleasantly surprised to receive a free yogurt drink to aid in digestion and cleanse the palate even further. In conclusion, dining at Mapo was an unforgettable experience that highlighted the best of Korean culinary traditions. From the exceptional dishes like the Mapo Kalbi and Mapo Heukdweji Samgyupsal to the specially imported soy sauce marinated crab and the refreshing Naengmyeon, every aspect of the meal was meticulously curated and expertly prepared. If you're looking for an authentic Korean barbecue experience that goes above and beyond in quality and service, look no further than Mapo in Murray Hill. A true culinary treasure not to be missed.
Food: 5 Staff: 4 Environment: 4 The food is delicious and fairly priced for the portions they serve! Staff were super friendly (spoke to us in mandarin) and were so eager to share their passion for food and holidays with us! We were given special porridge and acorn jelly on the house for the holidays, though sadly we were already so full that we couldn’t finish everything. Their seafood pancake was huge and super crispy! The fish we ordered was crispy with great sauce and the soup was also very flavorful! Make sure to try all the side dishes as some are different from what you’d normally get at Korean restaurants in Manhattan!
We stumbled upon this restaurant by happenstance and we’re surprised on how good it was. Many homemade banchan dishes are provided. You can taste the difference between store bought and homemade, which was really evident in thr Kimchi. Also, charcoal BBQ is so much tastier than gas grills. The flavors really shine through coupled with the tenderness the Galbi. We will be back!
The servers are very friendly and provide attentive service, they grill the beef ribs over hardwood charcoal table side. It's a pretty good deal considering the quality and quantity of meat you receive on top of the service. Very tasty and left the restaurant extremly full and satisfied.
Best dining experience I’ve had in a long time. The service and food were incredible and the staff lays close attention to your needs and are extremely helpful with any needs you may have or questions about the menu. Will absolutely be returning 12/10 !!!!!
Amazing BBQ korean restaurant in this sleepy area of Queens on a quiet street in flushing The highlights were the Banchan plates and the Amazing BBQ w Charcoal and Marinated Galbi was outstanding, with the Jae Chae on point too , we really enjoyed our waitress who pointed us in the right direction with her suggestion and quick refills on Salad leaves and side dishes. The small is tiny so get here early we show up at 5.30 and left at 7 pm and the place was packed. Great portions sizes and perfect side dishes like flurry steamed eggs and BBQ Corn and veggies Kimchi Soup. The Charcoal cooks the meat to a perfect crust and is so Good. We will definitely be back and love the variety from this little restaurant. Charming and very comforting like eating at a friend’s home.
Love the this place, excellent service! They cooked the meat for us, and refill our side dishes right away. Good quality meat and price is fair
I’ve been reluctant to go to Korean restaurants because of the constant micro aggression I’ve gotten as a non Korean but this place treated everyone equally, the food is absolutely amazing I got the non marinated beef, came with bottomless banchan that are free of charge, owner gave us some seafood jeon that was complimentary, and the vibes are so nice especially at night. Love this place
They serve a wide variety of side dishes, about a dozen in total, and almost all taste pretty good. An aunty will help grill the meat, though when it’s busy she might not be able to keep up. The grill runs quiet hot so can enjoy the meat quickly. I highly recommend the G3, the meat is wonderfully tender. Surprisingly, the yukgaejang is reall spicy yet tasty, but if can’t handle spice it’s better to skip it.
This is THE BEST kbbq I’ve been to in NYC. This is the closest thing you can find to an authentic Korean experience. You’re actually wrong if you gave anything other than 5 stars. I can see how the service may be somewhat foreign to you and that’s because it is. They started off serving Korean people. If you can’t appreciate that you’re probably uncultured and most likely not Korean
Great food! A lot of kbbq places either give really little food or bad tasting side dishes, but we got a lot of meat and a lot of tasty side dishes. I also really enjoyed the naeongmyun. It wasn't the full size one, just a taster, but even that was a bigger serving than anticipated. The people here are all really nice and the service was great!!!
Located in a Flushing area dense with Korean restaurants, this place may offer the best barbecue among them. It has a long history and has been featured in the media, attracting many customers, especially during weekend lunch hours. Despite its popularity, the quality of the food remains excellent—from the barbecue to the soups and side dishes, everything is delicious. Their charcoal-grilled barbecue is particularly commendable, rivaling even high-end Korean restaurants. The unmarinated meats are visibly fresh, and the marinated ones are perfectly seasoned. Additionally, the service is swift and attentive, with waitstaff going out of their way to create a fantastic dining experience. Highly recommended for a special visit.
Saw the advertisement on this korean bbq place decided to give it a try. I tried the mapo galbi two orders of it. It came with many appetizers. The nice ladies cooked it for us. There was a stew along with corn and steamed eggs. The meat was delicious, Juicy , and tender. Definitely fills you up I think it’s worth it!
Great, welcoming staff. Our waitresses spoke English/mandarin/Spanish which was a pleasant surprise. We thought the food was good but not plentiful, but sufficient. Please note if you want to order charcoal bbq at the table , you must order 2 orders of meats so expect around a hundred for the bill. The sides were excellent and had free refills . Complimentary savory pancakes , soonduboo (spicy tofu soup) and hot teas too.
This is my second time eating a Korean BBQ, so I pick Mapo. The staffs are friendly, and they work really quick, but other that, a really nice place to eat at. The foods are great and the staffs know what you want so they would recommend you the right menu to pick. They also tell you how to eat to get the most out of the food. 👍
The food was good overall but a bit pricey. I didn't personally notice much of a difference with the charcoal that some people rave about. It was a cool experience and the quality of the meat looked good but taste wise it was a bit hit or miss. They really went all out on the sides, which is pretty standard for Korean places, but even still I was really impressed with everything that we got. It was a good meal but difficult to justify the price.
They do traditional style charcoal kbbq here, love that. Staff are very warm and welcoming, we called and asked if it would be okay if we arrived 5 mins after last call (we knew what we wanted to order already) and they let us. Since we came after last call the kitchen was closing, I wanted to order another order of the creamed corn and the lady even went in the back and made one for me herself 🥹 so sweet. Their banchans are great, the meats are very good quality, 10/10 would recommend this place to a friend who loves kbbq!
Was here for dinner yesterday and it was three of us. We enjoyed their food and we had a wonderful time here. Service was phenomenal. Both the ladies were very sweet, kind, and amiable. As always, we ordered the same thing. They were all great. We actually came to flushing so we could go to our usual spot but unfortunately it was closed. Therefore, we had to pick a restaurant and we decided to go to Mapo. We didn’t regret at all because everything here was excellent and we had a wonderful experience here. Will visit this place again:)
After the Mets game, we wanted to grab something to eat. We originally intended to dine at a different bbq spot but there was a wait time so decided to check this place out. We got seated right away. We ordered soju and beer and the waitress helped us order the right amount of meat. We got the marinated galbi and brisket. Love how they give you so much banchan, soup, and steamed eggs. We were so full and the service was great. The only downfall was how rushed we were to place our order and close our tab. We didn’t ask for the check but the waitress brought it out. It seemed like they were closing soon which is why they probably were rushing but we were still eating and drinking and would’ve probably ordered more drinks. Otherwise, solid kbbq spot for galbi!
The side dishes are pretty good. A lot variety makes the main course appetizing. Dining here feels rushed. They will just throw all the meat on the grill. Expect to be eaten all right away for the next set of meat to be thrown on. The BBQ with charcoal is what brought me here. The downside is the ventilation is not good. You there to dine and walk out smelling like kitchen workers. Food: 4 of 5 Service: 3 of 5 Atmosphere: 2 of 5
Invited to dinner with cycling buddies. Nice cozy spot with street parking in front. The staff was nice enough to let me put my bicycle in the basement. The charcoal flames 🔥 were already roaring by the time I sat down. The aroma of Galbi beef filled the air. Lightly charred & sweet. Tender meat texture. Along with our entrees came many complimentary side dishes. I enjoyed the steamed egg in pot. The onions & bean sprouts were flavorful. No hot sake but cold sake or soju was available. Beers come in bottle form. Eating bbq over a warm flame with friends truly adds to the experience 👍👍
It's surprising to see this place has such a good review. I'm from Korea and I know what a good Korean BBQ taste like. And it was mediocre at its best. Their service wasn't very good. In fact, they were quite pushy. They clearly wanted us to leave asap so that they can sit the next waiting group. Also, be prepared to be smell like a piece of bbq meat at the end of your meal. If you're thinking of traveling to this far out just to taste Korean BBQ at this place, I'd like to say "it's not worth it". If you're already in the neighborhood, then why not.
This place is popular amongst the Korean community for their beef bbq. The beef bbq is good but their service doesn’t compare to their food. The waitresses will tell you to leave a cash tip and then they will have something to say if you don’t leave enough of a tip. I read their review on another website and they posted their health score. After reading that I won’t be going back. They haven’t updated their closing times on the website so make sure you call before you go.
I have not at been to a Korean BBQ in many years. My family is very fond of this type of cooking. After being served and having the beef cooked at the table,we were presented with ,10 side disher, and soup with tofu. Although my family was very pleased with the meal, I found many of the side dishes tasted the same. It was a new experience which I do not think I will like to repeat.
I definitely enjoyed the side dishes. However when it came to service I felt welcomed yet not looked after that much. I felt like customer service could have been better especially because when I had gone it was too busy(went during a weekday). However when it came to language barrier there was no problem since my gf spoke Chinese it made it easier to communicate. If you’re wondering about the food it was honestly great. I would say to try this place out.
My buddy and I went out here for a dinner, food was delicious, service was awful. She charged for 2 of the same meat, we specifically said 1 and 1 with an app of fried dumplings. Also she threw on a seafood pancake which we never even mentioned. When she brought it to the table I even asked… on the house? We didn’t order that. She said it’s okay. Then tried to make us pay for it at the end. Like I said, great taste and quality of food but not a great waitress.
The servers kept rushing us to order when we've just sat down and didn't even get water yet. We came hours before closing time, so wasn't sure what the rush was for. Also for thin cuts meats, those are cooked in the kitchen. This includes pork belly and brisket, both plates are ~$35 EACH and the portion sizes were much smaller compared to other KBBQ places I've been to. I guess personally I usually prefer those cuts for KBBQ and enjoy grilling + eating at the table. The cold noodles were flavorless, and they brought out the entrees (soup, steamed egg, and cheesy corn) AFTER we were halfway done with the meats? The kimchi also tastes like it's been soaked in water.
This is my 5th time to eat at this restaurant. We usually go there for dinner. The food is quite tasty, delicious and friendly. The auntie who is the staff there is quite lovely. But this time I went to eat in the afternoon, I got a rather bad service. She brought the hot pot and turned on the gas and walked away. I'm not sure how many minutes it took to eat because I waited until the fish was mushy. Actually, the fish should be in pieces, but we don't know if she will come back to tell us that the food is ready and can be eaten immediately. But she didn't say anything and walked away. The food didn't taste very good. So I decided to help myself. But what's worse is that after we paid the bill, the staff came back with the receipt and she asked for a tip in cash. I think the service today was very bad and I think she shouldn't have said that. I feel very sad today
Food was great . Unfortunately terrible service . Waitress was bringing items that were never ordered to the table and then arguing that we ordered them .
The waitress was very kind and even let us take food home that they weren't allowed to but the owners lied about the meat we were served. We ordered pork belly (galbi) meat but receieved pork shoulder meat. When we confronted the owner about the meat they lied and insisted it was pork belly. They even charged us the pork belly cost despite it being pork shoulder meat. We won't be coming back. This place would be a 1 star if it wasn't for the kind lady who served us that day.
We visited here today as a family of 7. We ordered 4 galbi and few other dishes. The waitress was rushing quite a bit and told us we should order more… seriously? It was over $250 worth of food. Food was average and we didn’t feel comfortable the whole time as the waitress was rushing the until we finished our meal. Definitely not going back. 👎
It was burdensome because there were so many side dishes that weren't that tasty. We ordered BBQ pork ribs and cold noodles, but the ribs didn't have a good texture, as if they were old, and the broth of the cold noodles was too bland. Still, the noodles were OK. The atmosphere of the restaurant was that of an old country diner. Not recommended.
Food was good. Bbq meats were great. However, the pancakes were very doughy and bland and there was no sauce included. The place has 0 vents so the whole place was up in charcoal smoke and my eyes started to water - terrible experience. Also, seems like prices are on the slightly more expensive sixe.
The food is good but they need to seriously work on their hospitality. The servers are very cold, other customers were told goodbye upon leaving and we weren’t. We love Korean BBQ and I will be looking for a new place to frequent. It’s not right that Asian customers get treated better than others. I have noticed this before when coming here but always wanted to give it another chance. After today, I’m done. Especially when one is spending close to $200 for dinner.
okay service and many side dishes, but the galbi was way too tough and didnt even look like beef. would not exactly recommend
Went here because it was high on lists for KBBQ, restaurants in Queens, etc. Overall, was one of the most disappointing dining experiences I’ve had. Nothing really distinguished this place from other KBBQ places, especially those that offer AYCE. The quality is not better and the prices here do not provide good value as we got 2 Meats and it was $100+. The sides were ok, they don’t really add to the meal. Perhaps I had really high expectations but I’ve been to KBBQ’s that are cheaper, have more food, and the quality is the same if not better. Definitely will not be repeating.
Terrible service. I ordered a fish combo which includes tofu soup. When tofu soup was served on my table, it was taken to another table by the waitress. Later on, i asked the waitress to come. She went to another table even though i called her first. When She finally show up, She said what do u want from me. I said did combo only include fish. She replied yes. I thought i placed the wrong order maybe. No further questions asked. After a while, She came and asked me did u get the soup. I said no. Then, She went away. Once again, no other reply from her. When i almost finished my dinner, the soup finally came. A different waitress asked me did u want this soup. It sounds like i beg them for the soup which i will pay for. In the end of dinner, When i asked waitress to pack my food, she was chewing while taking my food. she forgot my soup once again. I have to ask waitress to pack this as well. However, She was too busy to her dinner and third waitress showed up to pack my soup. She actually rolled her eyes to me. When i asked for the bill, i was told that tip in cash. When i signed my bill and left my tip on the table. The waitress took my bill and asked where was my tip. I said u ask for the cash tip and it is on the table. Fortunately, i can guarantee that they are not racists against Chinese people because they treat other people equally bad. I still gave them 18% for 100 dollar dinner. Never come again
If I could rate this 0 stars I would! I live in this area and have walked by this restaurant many times and always wanted to try it . I saw they have been in the news and was excited to see it in my neighborhood. What I didn’t account for was the reviews below that they treat Hispanic/ Latinx people subpar. They were so rude to us and barely waited on us. The other customers in there kept staring at us so it felt so uncomfortable. But the wait staff was terrible! So if you’re Hispanic, I am telling you DO NOT try this place! If I would’ve paid the bill I would’ve disputed the bill. Also food was decent but honestly I have had better in Astoria or the city. If the manager/owner cares, do better with your service when it comes to ALL of your customers, not just when it comes to your own race or if you know there are news journalists there. We are in 2024 there’s no reason that this shouldn’t be happening. Now thank you because every time I walk by there I cringe in disgust!!
My colleagues and I recently had a company dinner at this Korean BBQ restaurant. As an Asian-American business owner, we were looking forward to a pleasant dining experience. However, what we encountered was anything but that. We reserved four tables well in advance, paying $400 per table along with cash tip (in which the owner demanded cash tip that we adhered to). Despite this, we were met with the worst customer service imaginable. It seems that our negative experience stemmed from the fact that our staff members are of Hispanic descent. An hour into our meal, while still in the midst of enjoying our Korean BBQ, we were abruptly informed that we needed to consolidate our three tables into two because the restaurant needed to accommodate waiting customers. It's important to note that an hour into a Korean BBQ meal is essentially mid-meal, and we were nowhere close to being finished. This incident left us feeling disrespected and marginalized. It's evident that this establishment prioritizes its Korean customers over others, as implied by the insinuation that non-Korean patrons should avoid dining here. As fellow business owners, we had expected a level of professionalism and respect that sadly was not extended to us. I strongly advise against patronizing this restaurant if you are not of Korean descent. Our experience has been a stark reminder that discrimination can rear its ugly head even in the most unexpected places. Let's choose to support businesses that value all customers, regardless of their background.
WARNING TO CUSTOMERS WHO ARE NOT KOREAN! This place is extremely RACIST. I came here with my mother and sister, we are from Hispanic descent. We were dressed very well, even carrying our designer bags. Although that shouldn’t matter. They did not speak English at all and it was very hard to communicate with them, not even trying. We had to ask another patron for help with the menu. Food- Was mediocre at best. Location- if you are a women, please be careful traveling to this area. Across the street from the restaurant, there were about 40 homeless people cat calling all women. It’s disgusting. Please save your money and time. Do not come here.
So disappointed! Over rated! The food was just soso, bbq was ok, not great, Jap Chae is too sweet! Mostly it was the Rudeness of the owner and waitresses, who were standing behind us and around us, hinting us to leave, the owner telling us the table needs to clean, then a waitress came to tell us 8 people are waiting. I will not go back again to be treated 2nd class. Rude owner and waitresses!
I was very upset with the customer service I received Thursday 3/17/2022. I came in with my daughter and ordered tofu just only tofu and KALBI tang and they came out with an order of tofu soup and some other beef spicy soup I forgot the name of it. When I told them that’s definitely not what I order they said just eat it it’s really good. The waitress that took my order ran away so fast I am sure she probably didn’t even hear what I said. Just to keep the peace I still ate some of the food given to me. They then gave me a hot egg dish and said it’s on the house. I told them that is not what I wanted and to just give me what I wanted. I still never got what I wanted so I asked for the bill and paid it with no tip and walked out. After reading some of the reviews it seems to me that if you are not Korean they do treat you unfairly. When I came in last time with my Korean cousin we had the best service. I am half Korean and black clearly I don’t look fully Korean and neither do I speak Korean so the service I received on Thursday definitely was unfair and unprofessional.
Owner extremely unprofessional and complained about a non mandatory tip claiming it was the law to give more than what I gave (which was complete bs) never will go back. Waitress was also the one complaining about the tip when giving a sub par effort at serving our table
The quality of the meat wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t particularly impressive either. It was just average. The side dishes were reasonably good. The issue arose during payment. After finishing the meal, I paid with a credit card and noticed an additional 3.5% fee. Considering the meat isn’t cheap, I questioned whether it’s appropriate to charge an extra fee for card payments. When I inquired about this at the counter, they offered to cancel the card transaction and asked me to pay in cash instead. This was after I had already paid with my card. It was a very frustrating and unpleasant experience. Such business practices seem questionable. I have no desire to return and wouldn’t recommend this place to others.
First of all, I want to say that the ingredients were delicious, and there was no issue with the service. However, the reason I am giving a one-star review is that I only ordered a 50-dollar steak, but the bill ended up being over 100 dollar . When we asked the staff why it was 100 dollar , she told us that she ordered two portions for us because she was afraid one wouldn’t be enough—without our consent. This kind of behavior is unacceptable.
I have been going to this place for more than 10 years. I made reservations for 7 at 7pm. Regardless the fact that we arrived on time, the waitress told us to hurry up and order. So we ordered a lot of food which was about $100 per person. The food was not as good as they used to be. But the service was way worse until the point it was intolerable. We were told that we have to hurry up and eat and please leave in Korean (my spoke a little Korean) which was ordered by the woman behind the register and which was relay to us by the waitress. The whole dinner from ordering and leaving lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes. This place has the worst service and the food is not that great. Next time we are definitely going to change to another restaurant.
Very disappointed in this restaurant especially as it was listed as a top 100 restaurant by NY Times. I've been to other Korean BBQ places in Murray Hill and I'd steer clear of this one. At first I was excited that this is one of a few Korean places in NYC that uses charcoal to grill its meats. Unfortunately their restaurant has very poor airflow and vents so the smoke lingers throughout the entire restaurant. It's so smokey it feels like when we finished our meal I just inhaled a box of cigarettes. Second the servers are very pushy and did not let our family have any say on how to grill the meat as you would in other restaurants. For some cuts and meats we prefer a bit more grilled but it seemed like they were trying to grill the meat as quick as possible for turnover purposes (we were a table of 6). We felt like this quick grill of the meats didn't even imbue the taste of the charcoal on the meat so it didn't even matter that we were cooking over charcoal except for the air quality issue. We also somehow finished our meal before even the smaller tables that already were seated before us. It's not like we ordered little but again felt like we were rushed especially when it came to the grilling of our meats. Also this restaurant has a severe lack of dipping sauces. Fine if the meats were better marinated but they aren't. So I'm eating less flavorful meats than other Korean BBQ restaurants while sitting in a smoke filled room. Do not recommend.
This lady had the nerve to get annoyed with the amount I tipped. She clearly saw that I paid with my amex card and stood there looking at how much I tipped and had the nerve to tell my girlfriend who is korean that I tipped very little. This is the second time I came here and I will never return here again. I didn't want to write this review, but I saw other people had similar experiences with the tip. These people will tell you directly if you tip insufficient and embarrassed you in front of your party because of that.
Came here last weekend with my family as our favorite restaurant in the area was mobbed and waiting was at least 45min and we were starving. The restaurant was 1/ 3 full and we sat down for 10minutes before anyone acknowledged our presence... Banchan was spoiled and requested another set of banchan but they brought the same tray of banchan yet. So we only touched the kimchi as that alone wouldn't make us sick after all. We were wrong. We ordered galbi and it was literally the worst quality galbi ever experienced and was tough to chew. We had to question how they are still in business. We could muster our strength to eat only half of it and complained to the servers however their response was thats how they come. We asked for the bill and tipped about 10% which we thought were very fair but when we were getting up leave the server was scolding us and giving us a sob story about how this is their living blah blah blah so we just kept on walking and swore to never come back to this half ass restaurant.
Hahaha 🤣. Please be aware of a rude attitude from the waitresses lol. I tipped 16% out of 120 dollars. Which is more than fair. The waitress looked down on me lol and made sure everyone knew how much I had tipped them. Food was good but I was forced, in a way, to get two plates. This place seems popular amongst Koreans but that's it. Weird service for sure. Probably not coming back. If I get charge more for the tip without my consent I will dispute the entire bill. Period. Thank you Amex.
You don’t need to waste your time here. I’ve been there several times, and every visit was a disappointment. But my boyfriend is really big fan of there i dont know why. Their service is absolutely terrible, and the owner is unbelievably arrogant. They act like they don’t need customers because their business is already doing well. Honestly, it’s one of the worst experiences I’ve had rude attitude, zero professionalism, and no respect for customers. There are plenty of better places around, so do yourself a favor and go somewhere else You really think u wanna waste of money go to this place
Seven people ate Korean Galbi BBQ. The bill was $335 total before tax. I paid $420 including tip of $50. I thought $50.00 tip is OK. It wasn't Okay to the owner though. She said I had to give more tip! She said that in front of my guests! $50 is about 15% which is normal. I got so embarrassed I gave her $30 more and asked whether she is happy. This is the bottom line. Tipping is not mandatory in NYC unless it is stated in the menu. The owner of this restaurant doesn't care about the mood of customers. All she cares about is Money. No more Mapo Galbi. I will try another Korean BBQ restaurants. There are plenty of them in NYC.
Food is fine but the waitress lols weirdest experience being berated for not ordering more sets when we've been there and know how much we can eat (we, the 4 girls, ordered minimum required too while the rest of our group ordered above the minimum so it balances out). And when we tried to order the set which is more expensive she wouldn't accept that part of the order. Asked for hot tea from 4 different people before someone finally brought it. It was crazy we took at as a hilarious experience but I'm sure not everyone would like their bbq served with a side of attitude. On top of that they kicked us out saying they had a reservation. We stepped outside and continued to chit chat for about 15mins and no one arrived with a reservation. All in all, I would say they're a little racist and bullies you to order more than needed. The food wasn't good enough to deal with all that with 5 other spots just around the corner.
If you’re looking for a friendly takeout experience, this is definitely not the place. The owner seemed very “excited” to see that I was only ordering to-go—so excited that she barely looked at me, pointed at the screen for the price, and didn’t respond when I said “thank you.” Waiting for my food felt like an obstacle course, and at one point she even told me to step aside as if I were in her way. To make things worse, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being treated differently just because I’m not Korean. Whether intentional or not, the attitude was shocking, and I’ll happily take my business somewhere else
