Merida Mexican Restaurant Houston Reviews
I hate using the term "hole in the wall" because this little place is a hidden gem. My friend and I stopped by Thursday for lunch. She's a regular, it was my first time. The place was packed, no place to sit. The owner asked us if we would like to share a table with existing patrons and we said sure. On our way to the table, a booth became available so we just sat there. There are a few tables and booths. The decor is friendly, colorful with quirky signs. The music is playing softly. The conversations and banter between the wait staff and customers reminds me of eating amongst family, My friend raved about the food, so I was excited to try their dishes. We had chips and salsa and I was not impressed. The chips had absolutely no salt and the same thing goes for the salsa. I understand restaurants cater to different demographics, but a little salt goes a long way. It was no biggie, we just added salt to our liking. I ordered the carne guisada plate, served with beans, rice and two tortillas (3 would be better) and she had the asado de puerco, also served with beans and rice. We did not wait much and our dishes were brought to the table. The beans were great, the rice was great but the star of the show was indeed the carne guisada. The meat was so tender, moist with a rich and flavorful rue. I ordered mixed tortillas with my order and was disappointed to know it was only two. The corn tortilla was not the best, and the flour tortilla was ok. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the food, the atmosphere and need to come back to try the barbacoa and menudo which I hear are delicious.
This Houston institution slipped by me. I’d never been. I knew that it was historically significant to the max. On previous attempts, it was always too crowded. “Next time”, I would say. But recently, having seen a photo of their puffy taco, I knew that it was a “must”. Damn, that puffy taco plate was good. The rice and beans that accompanied it were great. As were the tacos. Crunchy. Not those softer, chewier, thick masa ones that SA is known for. A tad thicker than the ones at the (now closed) beloved Fiesta Loma Linda. And, I saw that caldo de menudo is a daily feature. Not just on weekends. This is a breakfast and lunch place. It closes at 2:00 pm.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our first time. We had a wonderful breakfast experience at Doña Maria. The food was excellent, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. A special blessing giving to us and over our business shared by Juan’s wife, Anna made the moment even more meaningful and memorable. We are now lifelong customers and will be recommending Doña Maria to our family, friends, and clients. Wishing continued blessings to the entire team, their family, and this outstanding business. 🙏
Doña Maria reminds me of home. I am from South Texas originally and when we visited for the first time the environment instantly reminded me of a little breakfast place my family and I would visit often. Then we were served our food and I was in LOVE. Very good, authentic Mexican food. I am a huge fan of their barbacoa plate, it is soooo yummy. The staff here is also very attentive and kind. I am so happy to have found them and look forward to every visit in my future! Thank you Doña Maria for being a little home away from home❤️
Delicious and authentic Mexican food served by kind, welcoming people. The interior brings me back to my family visits to Mexico, very charming and homey decor. We ordered takeout at the front and it took a little bit, but it was worth it because the food was delicious! We ordered cheese enchiladas and caldo de res (beef stew). Both were delicious, especially the soup - perfect for a cold winter's day. Give this place a try if you are looking for authentic Mexican food and want a change of pace from the typical Tex Mex.
Three words to describe this place… Delicious, Authentic, and Family-owned. I was craving some barbacoa and menudo for breakfast the way I used to have when growing up, and this place absolutely delivered on that! The restaurant has been ran for 18 years by a retired teacher and firefighter… the kind of folks that make you feel you’re part of the family right away. Looking forward to coming back to try more of their menu!
I just hit up Donna Maria’s Cafe in Eado, Houston, what a gem. Their breakfast tacos are absolutely delicious, packed with flavor in every bite. Staff couldn’t be friendlier—super nice folks who make you feel right at home. Plus, it’s so easy to find, right off the main strip. Hands down, five stars—go treat yourself.
We loved everything about this restaurant. The staff is friendly, the breakfast food is great and the music is a pleasure to hear. The salsa comes out warm and the chips are light. Love it. We highly recommend this restaurant. 🦋
First timer and will be coming back. The waitresses and owners were so nice and welcoming. We started off with chips and salsa and their salsa is fresh and spicy and chips are all fresh, so just perfect beginning. My mans got the papa and egg plate and I got these tacos: papa chorizo and egg mixed, bean and cheese, barbacoa and bacon and egg with a strip (I like a variety in case there is a chance I don’t like a taco) however that was not the case here! I loved every single taco. Their tortillas are fluffy and the food was so yummy. I was smiling the whole time. With the tip we spent $40 (So $34 before) not bad at all honestly. Glad this is in the 2nd ward and close by. 💜
Once again I just happened to be in the area when I needed some lunch. I was in the mood for tex mex enchiladas and found Doña Maria. Doña Maria serves a lot more than just enchiladas. I think their specialty are breakfast tacos/plates. FYI the crispy tacos are flaky which is probably due to the fact that they use homemade tortillas. I ordered a cheese enchiladas and a fajita enchilada. Both were good but I was pleasantly surprised how tender the fajita meat was. So many things to try but since they close early at 2pm, I will have to go back another day. I really loved how the staff/ Hernandez family treated my family and I. An older gentleman was so sweet to my 6 yr old son and our waitress was very patient and accommodating. We were treated like family and that means a lot to me. Try this family owned and run establishment. You'll definitely find something delicious to eat. Just make sure to get there early!
Just before Christmas, I met some former coworkers for breakfast at Dona Maria's! A few weeks previously, when things were winding down from our steak dinner gathering, it was suggested we meet for breakfast here! Just 3 of us this time but the company was still great! Migas & barbacoa were ordered & I chose my standard, pork chops! My friends enjoyed their selection but I was disappointed! My chops were overcooked, dark, looking blackened! I only ate half, it was tough to cut & hard to chew! I thought they had a new cook! Didn't complain to management, which normally I would have! Three friends gathering to refresh our lives, reminiscing about stories of our youth & where we are now! I'll be back, but won't have my standard breakfast there anymore! I like porkchops but not tough as leather!
I left feeling thoroughly let down by the dining experience. Opting for the huevos rancheros, I was met with disappointment as the ranchero sauce turned out to be nothing more than a lackluster concoction of crushed tomatoes. The accompanying potatoes were simply deep-fried slices akin to generic French fries, lacking any discernible flavor profile. What's more, the prices did not align with the underwhelming quality of the dishes; I ended up paying a sum comparable to a chain restaurant but without the flavorful appeal. The absence of even basic seasoning like salt was glaring. I can't help but wonder if this decline in quality is attributed to the gentrification of the East End. Unlike establishments such as Ninfas and El Tiempo, which have managed to preserve the authenticity of their original recipes, this restaurant fell short of expectations. It's a shame, as I had hoped to stumble upon a hidden culinary gem.
I'd heard pretty good things about Dona Maria, so I was excited to try. Unfortunately I was really underwhelmed. While I thought the decor and building was quaint and charming, I was not a fan of the food. They were completely out of barbacoa when we went. The food we did have however, was made of low quality ingredients. Worst of all, the queso was obviously from a can. Aside from that, we were also given disposable cups and silverware. I don't plan on returning, which is sad since I've heard of the great history of this restaurant.
