Every course was incredible, Ken was the best chef we’ve ever had.

Sushi Kai in the East Village is an absolute hidden gem for sushi lovers! From the moment you walk in, the cozy vibe and friendly staff make you feel right at home. Their sushi is unbelievably fresh—every bite practically melts in your mouth, and the chef’s creative twists on classic rolls keep things exciting. The omakase is a must-try if you want the full experience—it’s like a flavor journey straight from Tokyo. Whether you’re here for a casual night out or a special dinner, Sushi Kai delivers that perfect mix of quality and East Village charm.

I’ve had my eye on Sushi Kai for quite some time, but only now did I finally get to try it out. I’m a big fan of omakase, but it does tend to get pricey. Sushi Kai is a great “affordable” alternative if you’re trying to have high-quality sushi, without breaking the bank. Their omakase course comes with a three piece entree, 12-15 courses, and a hand roll, all for $85 per person - not bad! Once I entered, I really liked the cozy and chill vibe. Made the dining experience really comfortable and relaxing. And of course, the food. I was very surprised by the quality and freshness of the fish. All were super soft and melted in your mouth. Paired well with the perfect amount of rice and garnishes. The rice to fish combo was spot on - a lot of places will often go too heavy on the rice and it overpowers the fish, but the sushi chefs here do a great job and creating the ultimate balance. Sake selection was good too and reasonably priced. I got the Dassai 39 bottle and it was very good, sweet and silky, paired very well with the fish. Great experience and awesome sushi. Will be back!

Cozy, friendly spot with fresh fish at a good price. The nigiri toppings are minimal but pair perfectly. Fave is the salmon nigiri with the tomato on top, and of course the Uni. Chef accommodates allergies or dislikes and makes great selections (and is very friendly). I frequent a lot of omakase spots in the city, and this is a good weekly spot. The only thing I'd change is the first dish appetizer - it's unnecessary and isn't as good as the rest of the experience. Love that it's BYOB also! It's definitely fast but that's what omakase is. Didn't feel overly rushed. @ eva.on.eats for more recommendations!

Amazing 15 course omakase for only $85 per person! Every bite was delicious, and the service was very friendly and welcoming. There are only 10 seats in the whole restaurant which made the whole experience even more special. Highly recommend!

Delicious, first of all. All the ingredients felt pretty high quality. It’s definitely great bang for you buck. My favorite course of the omakase was the hamachi with torched shishito peppers, soooo good. My only concern is that there were way too many courses with truffle, felt a bit overdone. So worth a try!

Omakase amazingness! Each bite was heaven, loved scallop, various rounds with caviar and with truffle toppers. A small spot with all bar seats so you can watch the magic unfold. Super fresh, price is now $85 for omakase and can BYOB. Did that and then got sake also. Totally worth it dining experience!

Good omakase Otoro sushi was great! Highly recommend one with uni . The course is like a normal sushi Omakase if you are not looking for anything spectacular. Restaurant is clean and service was nice . We ordered the 12-bite course also end up ordering more as we didn’t feel full . I wish they served alcoholic drink .

Sushi Kai is officially one of my favorite omakase spots in the city. Loved their new combinations with shrimp and scallops. Their choice of making the sushi richer rather than the usual route of going light really sold me. Some of my favorite pieces of the night was the scallop with caviar, shrimp with foie gras, ikura w uni, wagyu with uni and the otoro w/ caviar.

pressed for time? No problem. This 🍣 Omakase spot will bang you out in ☝🏼hour with their 12 nigiri and a hand-roll! Our favorite was the A5 wagyu with Uni as well as the toro with caviar photo #8. And also the shrimp and tuna pieces. Ok - we like them all and will be back for more!

This is THE best sushi I ever had. The chef's omakase was so perfect that I might have a hard time going to a regular American sushi place ever again. It's worth every penny.

This was the most phenomenal dining experience. We did the Omakase at the chefs table and it was remarkable. I have to say it was one of the best meals of my entire life. Every single bite was mind-blowing. Each bite was perfectly curated for a flavorful, delectable experience. The chefs were extremely friendly and skillful. You get to watch the show of the chefs preparing the beautiful sushi as you eat. It’s BYOB and we bought Sale beforehand and it paired perfectly with the sushi. I am still in awe at how amazing this meal is. The intimate setting makes it a perfect spot for a date night or a special occasion. With only $75 for the Omakase menu it’s a great value. We left satisfied and perfectly full. I am still thinking about this meal every day and I cannot wait to go back. I cannot recommend this place enough!!!

I am picky about my sushi ….. and this was .. The best $75 omakase ever!!! Great VALUE. Left feeling full. And great quality pieces of fish. Not a single piece was bad or sub par quality.. all GREAT. Appetizer for me was an oyster with ikura, two pieces of sashimi, and a piece of miso glazed cod!! Followed by 12 nigiri (salmon, toro, scallop, yellowtail, sea bream, uni, ikura, etc) then a toro hand roll then miso soup. This totally beats out somewhere like sushi on Jones.. instead of going to Jones, pay $17 more and go to Sushi Kai for a way better atmosphere, experience, and quality of food.

Highly recommend the omakase for $75. Fish was very fresh. We stopped by spontaneously for dinner and did outdoor dining so would definitely come back again and try to get a seat at the chef’s counter.

Discovered Sushi Kai last week... Great Omakase experience - sushi were outstanding and service was awesome. The price/quality ratio is incredible. It’s BYOB :-)

Sushi Kai lands smack dab in the middle; its good quality for the price, the space is simple and beautiful, and overall should go. The omakase, overall, is simple and there wasn't too much in a stand out piece. As you can see on the pictures, the there is no wipedown of the plates between pieces. Service overall was nice, and e didn't feel rushed, which is def a point above some other omakase spots in the same price range.

We went here on a Friday evening for the $85 15-course omakase that included an appetizer, 10 nigiri, uni ikura don, and a hand roll. Also got Japanese beers and a small bottle of dry sake to share. The chilean sea bass was my favorite as part of the appetizer and the uni ikura don. Tbh, none of the nigiris really stood out for me since it was a bit hard to taste the fish and somehow tasted all similar since all of them either had caviar, truffle and/or ponzu sauce on it. The pieces were also very small which left us hungry at the end. The chef and server were very friendly and attentive. The space is small and the seats are crammed next to each other which made it awkward every time the server came by to reach over to refill our glass or ask if everything was okay. They will shorten your course if you arrive late to your reservation (which the hostess noted when we called); luckily we made it on time.

The quality of the omakase is outstanding. The fish is fresh and each course makes you crave for more. We finished the meal under one hour. If you are going for the food not the ambiance this is def a must try. It’s byob also.

I had the omakase course for $65. The quality was good relative to the price point. Service and presentation could be better, but food quality, plating, taste was overall better than expected. For the price, I'd say it is a deal. Would definitely go again.

If I'm spending $100/person on a meal, I expect solid execution. That didn't happen. The planning and idea of the meal was good. However, the rice would fall apart with you grabbed the sushi pieces with chopsticks. The quality was less than that of Sugar Fish. Also, the end of the meal felt rushed. On to the next!

Positives: the service and atmosphere are great. The waitress was very friendly and quick on water refills. Negatives: the fish is just not good. They toast the top of almost every dish and/or douse it in yuzu / lemon / wasabi. The fish is not fresh and tastes low quality. The hand roll even has something akin to garlic powder in it. The food overall is below mid and not worth the 100 per person after tax in my opinion. They are cutting corners with ingredients and also with customer time (typical omakase is 90 minutes. Here is 60 to get more clients in and out). I actually didn’t mind the shorter time frame because as more dishes came out, couldn’t wait for it to be over and leave…
