Monterrey Cafe Port Lavaca Reviews
This TexMex cafe is a no fuss/no frills tradition in the small town of Port Lavaca, TX, which is chock full of similar restaurants. Many try and fail, but Monterrey perseveres for a valid reason: it's affordable, dedicated and serves authentic, reliably delicious food. A handful of other tasty standard TX dishes are offered as well. If you're in the area, it's well worth a visit.
If you want great Mexican food here is the place to go. They are family owned and operated, the building needs updating but the food is great ! 5 stars :-)
Always love their Ck Fr Stk&Fries great service very good waitress
Best place loved the food reminded me of my mom's and grandmother's cooking ..
Our large party of 10 went here for dinner our last night in port lavaca. We were very surprised at all the options on the menu. It ranged from Mexican, to pancakes and eggs, to fried chicken and burgers. The queso wasn't very good and it took a good 45 minutes for our dinner but it was worth the wait. We will come back.
Prices. Service. Authentic and consistent service and food brings back locals for generations! Truly a hidden gem right on the harbor area in town. It’s my monthly reward when craving true Tex-mex without breaking the bank! Breakfast tacos and the Monterrey Plate will leave you breathless and so full you’ll need a nice “siesta” to recover!
The chicken fried steak was dam good but it seen to be getting smaller from the last two time we order it , but other then that everything else was good
Nice little place, very homey feel. The chips and salsa were average The food came out very hot and in an appropriate amount of time. The sweet tea was bright and fresh and not oversweet. Above average. The ground beef taco was average. The pork carnitas were tender and mildly spiced. Slightly above average. Refried beans were above average. Rice was Average. What makes this a 5 star review is the cheese enchilada. Its simply the best enchilada I've had in three years.
Great service, great food with lots of flavor. Not just Mexican food on the menu. Clean restaurant with authentic Mexican atmosphere. Can't wait to go back.
Always hot always good and service is always great! Noon service and evening service! Owner and Manager are always ready to make things right if the need arises! Thanks for many years of service to our community!
Good food at reasonable prices! I really enjoy the family atmosphere here. I had the Monterrey Special, which was a generous portion and very satisfying. Definitely recommend for a casual and enjoyable dining experience!

update Aug 2022 - Glad they have reopened. Good Tex Mex - - Upgraded to 4*. Food is excellent. Fresh as it can be. Had the chalupas with guacamole and they were spot on. We will be back.
Friendly and attentive service. Lots of local people who appear to be regular customers. Good food and portions. Free parking. The beef tostada was good but we were told other items are more popular. SEE PHOTOS.

Good food. Service is really good and food came out quick.
Waitress was really nice, restaurant & bathrooms were clean. My parents really liked the fried chicken & onion rings. My husband had carne guisada & it was good. I had chicken flautas & my niece had enchiladas, it was good just needed a little bit of seasoning but that's just my opinion.

A local recommended this place but we were very disappointed. The food was bland and mushy. Worst rice I’ve ever had. Chicken in the taco was boiled. We wonder if the place has had a change of cooks since it had great reviews in the past.
The food was very bland and middle of the road. My co-worker actually ended up getting sick in the parking lot. They didn’t have chicken when we went so we had to get beef. The rice, beans and beef all tasted exactly the same. The staff was really kind at least. I think we paid $23 total for two people so the prices aren’t crazy. It’s a very limited menu and I expected more from that.

Hole-in-the-wall had promise until.... The salsa, it was not. More like hot sauce, extremely watery. The chips were bland and stale. The food I ate and my coworker ate was mediocre at best. The rice and beans are okay, but tacos and enchiladas were so-so. The waitress was very nice and polite. Prices were ok. And the lunch/dinner menu was limited to about 15 items. For that few items I expected really great food. Not the worst, not the best.

Do not waste your money coming to this restaurant. The food is disappointing. The chicken fried steak was horrible.
Came for lunch on Friday expecting to have a good meal and left high dissatisfied. The chips were so stale they were practically inedible. My boyfriend was drinking his coke from the can, and it was fine, well than he poured it into the glass of ice they gave him and it just tasted dirty. The Spanish rice was so bland and just not good. The beans were good but not for a price of 35$ for 2 plates. That’s ridiculous for a lunch plate, especially one that doesn’t even fill you up and leaves you disappointed. Never coming here again....
