Sylvia's Poughkeepsie Reviews
The meals are not only full of sustenance, but also it leaves a coat of Caribbean flavor along your taste buds. Every customer that leaves will leave a little heavier, due to their great portions. Their oxtail and rice are always cooked to perfection, and everything is given that small homemade touch that makes you feel like you are at a small piece of Jamaica, right in our neighborhood.
I love this place!!! I swear I tried every Jamaican restaurant in Poughkeepsie and surrounding areas, and this one is by far the best! They season their food really well, and it always taste so fresh! I literally will not order curry, chicken, plantain, or cornbread from anywhere else. The people are super nice and welcoming, and the service is amazing!
This is my go-to for lunch. My first option. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. They have all of your traditional Jamaican dishes, and all of them are very tasty. I'm biased because I love their fried ckicken! It has just the right amount of spice and a little kick of pepper. Mama Sylvia and her daughter and staff are very friendly. You can eat in or grab a to go order. Either way, you'll be satisfied 😌 💯 👌 😉
I just discovered Sylvia's a little over a month ago, stopped in and got some jerk chicken to take home. We enjoyed it so much that we get it once a week now. The other night as I was eating it I felt (this is definitely corny) a wave of love wash over me. I thought "this must be what it would feel like if my mother cooked me my favorite dish". Sylvia definitely loves cooking and it comes through in the food - it's like getting a hug. On top of that, every person who I've met working there is warm and welcoming. The ladies behind the counter encourage me to try other dishes but I can't get enough of the chicken. I look forward to it every week. The portions are healthy, the rice and peas are delicious and the plantains are always magically perfect. Thank you Miss Sylvia!
This is THE BEST Jamaican food I have ever had in my life. The owners of this quaint, friendly restaurant are maybe the most hard working people I’ve ever met and all they want is to fill your belly with delicious, comforting, homemade food. I recommend this to everyone I know, I have driven over 3 hours just to eat this food!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!
Love the jerk chicken! Nice tasty rice and beans, sweet maduros. Nice staff and conveniently on main Street near the train. I love that you can get the meal in different sizes.
I was passing through and decided to give it a try. I must say the food was delicious. I got the stew chicken and my husband had oxtails, lots of flavor and the woman at the front counter was very pleasant.
Best Jamaican restaurant in Dutchess County!!! The food is authentic and delicious! The staff is kind and helpful. I’ve witnessed them handle difficult customers with class and grace. Also, Andrea is WONDERFUL!!! Can’t say enough good things about Sylvia’s restaurant.
I love Jamaican good. There are a few spots here in Poughkeepsie NY. Sylvia's is one of the best Jamaican restaurants in NY. I ordered oxtails, rice and peas, cabbage today with a beef patty nd cheese on cocoa bread. There cocoa bread and patties are so fresh they never disappoint. There oxtails... fall off the bone literally, always fresh and delicious. There customer service and atmosphere always welcoming, great place to visit if you are in the area.
Best Caribbean food in Poughkeepsie. Portion is less than other restaurants in the area but enough to fill your stomach. Savory stew chicken. Freshly cooked fried chicken, curry chicken and goat, oxtail with rice and beans dishes are few among the popular items offered. Best place for a quick bite or pick up your lunch or eat in the restaurant for dinner. Good friendly customer service.
NICEST PEOPLE HERE! Fantastic food. Every time I have visited, the customers and the staff are always incredibly sweet - one person even went out of her way to check for me if they had beef patties left! The beef patties are amazing, the mixed veggies and cabbage were seasoned so well. Fried plantains were good, and the oxtail was delicious! They usually have limited stocks of food, which is okay even if I miss out on some food because then you know it's fresh. If you want all the good stuff (like the dumplings usually sell out quick), come here exactly at or their posted breakfast and lunch times!
I did not expect to find a Jamaican restaurant in Poughkeepsie. Its been years since I aet such cuisine. The jerk chicken was very tasty. Overall it was a delicious meal. The beer had a good taste. Just a walk a few blocks and your able to enjoy good food with such view. I recommend this restaurant.
They really spend time and effort preparing their dishes. Very tastee. My only stipulation is just fall back on the hot pepper 🌶 a bit overboard with the spice. It's a B for effort 👌
Wish they had a veg option like curry tofu or something else. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Their juices are very popular, sold out on all of them when I popped in.
Terribly disappointed. My expectations were really high, being a native of Jamaica and knowing a lot of Jamaicans live in New York. I tried the jerk chicken, jerk pork and curry goat. The chicken and pork was super dry; either overdone or maybe they were leftovers from lunch hour. The goat was average; missing the thick, rich flavor and texture you get from a good curry goat plate. I was told by family who live in New York that they have eaten here before and that it just wasn’t as good this time around. So maybe it was just an off day for the restaurant.
3/6/26 Food is good but the cashiers attitude sucks. Customer service is a hit or miss. Been going for years but feed up with the attitudes.
Food is horrible. I dont get the reviews. Fried Chicken has no flavor was undercooked. Rice was bland. This is not Jamaican food or even just good food. Waste of $15 dollar. Had to throw the whole plate of food in the garbage. Have tried them twice now. Other time was the oxtail that taste like it look. BLAND. Big mistake both time. Waste of time and money. They taste worse then hospital food. These positive reviews must be fake because how?
